Dear Readers,
Summer is around the corner, the first half of the year is already over, and I am delighted to see how dynamically the ENGEL & VÖLKERS Group continues to grow and how the company continues to develop positively and successfully. At the beginning of March, ENGEL & VÖLKERS Americas hosted the annual EVX – a congress that invites our global advisors to engage in a lively exchange and brings together our partners from Canada to Mexico.
The highlight was the first official U S appearance of Jawed Barna – our new Group CEO – on the grand stage of the Cosmopolitan hotel in Las Vegas. I am personally very pleased that he took over the Group at the end of last year. On the sidelines of this impressive three-day event, excellently organized by our U. S. team, a small, exclusive circle also welcomed eleven new Private Office Advisors who have earned the right to call themselves PO Advisors through successful transactions. A great honor, which means that they have achieved four to five times the sales of other market participants in the past year. In total, there are now 301 Private Office Advisors working in our premium segment in over 35 countries worldwide, catering to h igh-net-worth individuals – clients interested in properties worth upwards of ten million euros. The consultancy is highly complex, involving not only the transaction itself but often also a long and emotional process, for which E&V Private Office Advisors require a lot of knowledge, experience and expertise in order to support their client s in the best possible way
Bottom line of the tenth EVX event: ENGEL & VÖLKERS is regarded as the only brand hav ing established itself globally in the premium real estate segment due to its strong, globally active network of real estate advisors.
And more good news: The real estate business in Dubai is booming like never before! Listening to our new Country CEO of E&V Middle East, Daniel Hadi, talk about this exciting market and report s of long queues in front of apartments for sale is pure joy. Just a few facts that show how remarkably this market is growing: 17 million people visited Dubai in 2023. The population of the UAE was 9.5 million last year, making it one of the fastest-growing regions in the world – with exciting real estate projects.
Wishing you a wonderful summer!

Legendary!
Perhaps it’s due to the tumultuous times we find ourselves in. In the backdrop of historical upheavals with rudimentary conflicts on one side and turbocharged, futuristic developments on the other, such as the increasing dominance of artificial intelligence, the longing grows. For stability, familiar faces, companies, names that represent continuity and the memory of better times. Living legends – like our cover star Sharon Stone – have exemplified and shown that one can navigate through turbulent times. Catapulted to Hollywood superstardom by her role in “Basic Instinct,” she later endured numerous setbacks – was even in a coma – but never gave up. After many hurdles, she has now found a calling as a painter and shares this new chapter in an exclusive interview with Steffi Kammerer (page 30). After its extensive renovation the Chelsea Hotel remains a legendary address in Manhattan, and keeps oozing glamour with a pinch of rock ‘n’ roll. Join me on an unforgettable trip aboard the luxury cruise ship Europa along the U.S. East Coast from Halifax, Nova Scotia to New York City, or follow me to New Zealand for a fabulous test drive through the land of the Hobbits with Ferrari’s first four-door sports car for the whole family. I reveal on page 40 why the Purosangue is not an SUV.
I hope you enjoy this issue of GG!

1 ARCHITECTURE Don’t forget to look up! The art nouveau facade of the first courtyard at Hackesche Höfe was designed by the Berlin architect August Endell. 2 FINE DINING Algae caviar and pine cones: The culinary creations at Michelin-starred Cookies Cream are all plant based. 3 HISTORIC The Museum Island is home to an ensemble of five famous museum buildings. 4 AN INSTITUTION The legendary Paris Bar in Charlottenburg district has been frequented by the art scene from the very beginning.
ith almost four million residents, the German capital is the country’s most populous city. In the government district, legislators determine Germany’s future beneath the glass dome of the Reichstag Building. Berlin’s checkered history is evident wherever you go; there are places of world-historical importance at every turn. During the cold war, world powers faced off at Checkpoint Charlie and a wall divided Berlin, East and West, for 28 years. The remains of the border crossing bear testament to those years of separation and Brandenburg Gate is symbolic of Germany’s reunification.
In 2023, 12 million people visited Berlin. This year, the number will likely increase because the German capital is celebrating several important events. November 9 marks the 35th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. This summer, some 2.5 million soccer fans are expected to converge on the city for the European Championship, during which the Straße des 17. Juni, the street whose name commemorates the East German uprising in the GDR in 1953, will be transformed into the world’s longest fan mile. And finally, the TV Tower on Alexanderplatz, a popular postcard motif, will be celebrating its 55th anniversary in the fall.
Berlin’s past is inextricably tied up with Jewish history. A site consisting of 2,711 concrete steles serves as a memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. It is Germany’s main Holocaust memorial. Today Berlin identifies as a cosmopolitan city that celebrates diversity on a daily basis and where people from 191 different nations live together in 12 districts. Every year, Kreuzberg celebrates a four-day, intercultural street festival called the Carnival of Cultures. The Turkish specialties at the Maybachufer farmers’ markets in Neukölln recall
an oriental bazaar; Kantstraße is lined with Asian shops and eateries. In addition to traditional streetfood like kebabs and curry sausages, for which the city is famous, it has established itself in recent years as a foodie hotspot for innovative, Michelin-starred cuisine. Chef Marco Müller’s Rutz is the city’s first threestar restaurant.
Berlin’s rich array of cultural events and vibrant arts and party scene draws young people in particular. Techno fans line up in front of the famous Berghain club day and night, hoping to pass through Berlin’s most indomitable doors. But it’s not just the legendary nightlife that draws people from around the world. With 4,500 startups, Berlin has developed into one of Europe’s main tech hubs.
During the summer months, residents escape the heat in the surrounding countryside with its many lakes. Popular activities include concerts at Waldbühne, a beautiful open-air, amphitheather-like venue in the middle of the woods, or sailing on Wannsee lake. Those who have the chance enjoy nothing better than to spend the weekend at their summer cottage in Brandenburg. The sparsely populated Uckermark region is particularly popular with Berliners.

GLASS ART This decorative, handmade piece by Swedish brand Skogsberg & Smart will never sit in the corner catching dust. The all-rounder makes a striking statement on your table as a vase but also creates a beautiful light when used as a wind protector for a candle.
“Hurricane Lamp Boule“ was mouthblown in Bohemia, a region famous the world over for its glass art. The heavy crystal and the unusual bubble design give it a real touch of class. Available in a range of colors and sizes.
PERFECTION The outdoor cooking station Rock.Air by Steininger lets you prepare food outside like a pro. The modular elements include a gas grill, lava grill, sink and cooler, which can be mixed and matched according to your needs. The powder-coated steel withstands all types of weather. TAKE THE PLUNGE! Many homeowners dream of putting in a pool, but pools take up a lot of space. This is where German company Konzeptpools GmbH comes in with made-to-measure solutions. Their movable floor system raises and lowers the pool floor hydraulically, turning your pool area into a terrace in just minutes and making it possible to virtually walk on water. A safe and individualized option for making the best use of indoor and outdoor space, this could be just what you’re looking for, as the company works hand-in-hand with clients to come up with just the right concept.

Managing Director Janine Baaima
Passion for Porsche
The CEO of sports car dealership Jungblut Sportwagen Janine Baaima shares her love of the brand with her customers.
Where does your fascination with fast cars, particularly Porsches, come from?
I’ve always been a fan of powerful cars, even as a child. It thrilled me every time I saw a Porsche. To me, the classic design expresses a timeless aesthetic, and my connection to the brand has only intensified over the course of my career. Porsche is a product in which I’m happy to invest my energy.
What makes the brand special in your opinion? In my eyes, a Porsche is a valuable investment and an elegant car. It has a high recognition factor and is associated with a certain understatement in this market segment. It’s also a very emotional product. For many people, Porsche is a brand that stays with them their whole life. And owning a Porsche is a childhood dream that many look forward to fulfilling. It connects people and creates a special community. We always say: “There’s no such thing as an old Porsche, there are only new owners.”
You also sell special edition Porsches. Who are your customers?
All kinds of different people. One person may have saved up their whole life for a particular car while another wants to expand their collection. With special editions, it’s always either/or: Either you’re a collector who will never actively drive it or you’re someone who really wants to use it. Our customers usually know exactly what they’re looking for and are very well informed.
Do you have a favorite model?
We once had a 964 Backdate for sale, a very elegant, older generation Porsche with a dark blue metallic finish, cognaccolored Pepita seat inserts and matching gloves on the dashboard. Classic cars in particular make my heart beat faster.

Istria’s hidden real estate gems
These days, the search for an exquisite second home could take you to Istria. For many, the Istrian peninsula with its picturesque landscapes and cultural diversity is almost impossible to resist. In a place where history and luxury merge, you may find that what began as a search for a vacation home could very soon become something much more permanent.
Istria, a hidden but fast emerging European gem in the Adriatic, is characterized by a fascinating combination of traditional beauty and modern luxury. The region is steeped in history and has many picturesque towns, among them Rovinj and Porecˇ on the west and Opatija on the east side of the peninsula. Opatija has often been compared with Nice on the French Riviera and became well-known after being visited by the Austrian Empress Sisi. The Istrian peninsula is covered in lush vegetation, has a mild climate and ideal conditions for purchasing a second home amid paradise-like surroundings.
“A high level of security, clearly defined ownership structures and a lack of water shortage issues make Istria an attractive proposition for international buyers,” explains Patrick Kohl, CEO of Engel & Völkers Istria. And thanks, for instance, to its proximity to Germany – it’s only a five-hour drive from Munich – the Instrian peninsula has established itself, particularly post-pandemic, as a highly sought-after destination.
The real estate market reflects the growth in demand and luxury villas are booming. Such a villa will currently set you back between €1.5 und €2.5 million.
Premium properties are usually not located right on the coast but further inland, where owners enjoy particular privacy without being more than a short drive from local hotspots and points of interest. Five-star hotels, renowned vineyards and Michelinstarred restaurants underscore the region’s appeal. In fact, in 2023, Rovinj overtook Dubrovnik as a tourist hotspot with overnight stays totaling 4.1 million compared with 3.8 million in Dubrovnic.
Population figures for Istria (95,237 in 2021) are predicted to double, driven primarily by the influx from Germany, Switzerland
and Austria. This in turn is expected to boost the quality of life and increase the region’s popularity. “It’s remarkable how fast the demand for real estate in Istria has grown. It’s turning the region into an El Dorado for long-term investors,” our local real estates expert adds, summing up.
EU citizens will discover that conditions are very favorable indeed because purchasing properties here is very much like doing so in their home countries. International investors will be pleased to know that there are significant tax advantages associated with tourist rentals and, to make the proposition even more attractive, EU subsidies are available for construction projects in the EU.
Croatia is an up-and-coming newcomer, so there is lots of development going on. The good thing is that the new builds are all state-of -the-art, meaning energy efficient. For the most part, properties are equipped with air source heat pumps and photovoltaic systems. There is no property tax, so maintenance costs are low, and comparatively cheap energy prices also make for a high return on investment. Buyers from the southern parts of Switzerland, Austria and Germany currently dominate the market, but interest in Istria in growing particularly among investors from the U.S., U.K. and other European countries such as Slovenia, Czech Republic and Hungary. Thanks to its agreeable climate, Croatia is worth a visit any time of the year and offers lots of opportunities for everything from fun seaside activities in the summer to enjoyable hikes through the picturesque countryside in the fall. Due to its year-round appeal, the Istrian peninsula is the perfect place for anyone who is looking to invest in a high-quality property whose value will only increase in the long term.
The Istrian peninsula is an absolute newcomer in the market for second or vacation homes –a real inside tip!

Branded residences, which are cooperations between real state developers and luxury brands like Fendi, Armani or Porsche, are becoming increasingly popular worldwide. Such living concepts are often seen in cities like New York or Dubai. They offer top quality, representative design and services like those offered by a high-end hotel. Branded residences can be part of a hotel complex or entirely separate. Demand is high, particularly among ultra-highnet-worth individuals from the U.S. and Asia, but also from Spain. A residence of this kind lends prestige and can raise the value of a property too.
The Top 100 City Destinations Index 2023 published by Euromonitor International uses 55 metrics in six categories to come up with values that best express a city’s overall attractiveness. The categories include economic and business performance, tourism performance, tourism infrastructure, tourism policy and attractiveness, health and safety, and sustainability.

Icons by Oscar
Elvis, Audrey, Roger, Marlene, Janis, Mick: There aren’t many people who the whole world recognizes by their first name alone. In the ’60s and ’70s, American photographer Oscar Abolafia (who is one of them) photographed countless legends of that period, creating iconic images that have immortalized them forever. This 248-page XL edition is a collection of more than 150 magnificent portraits. It is also a book that documents the life and work of a man who, throughout his career in New York City, was able to successfully build very personal relationships with celebrities and stars.

Tom Ford
It’s impossible to imagine Gucci without Tom Ford, the man who had an immense influence on the brand and has even become an icon himself. His designs turned the fashion house – on the brink of bankruptcy at the time – into one of the biggest global players in the fashion industry. This illustrated book, which came out around the time Ford left Gucci, features his designs for that brand as well as for Yves Saint Laurent from 1994 to 2004. It’s a catalogue of the garments and accessories that reflect Ford’s vision for creating a brand, and offer a glimpse into an extraordinary career.

Regarded as one of the most influential photographers of our time, Annie Leibovitz began her career working for Rolling Stone and later Vanity Fair and Vogue. This collection of photographs, which reflects her work over a 40-year period, only weighs a little over 5 kilos (compared with the original 26-kilo SUMO edition). Leibovitz spent several years on the book project. Some of the iconic images of famous personalities that she chose have seldom, if ever, been seen before. “The book is very personal, but the narrative is told through popular culture,” says the photographer, describing her achievement.

or most people, switching tracks, changing things about their lives, perhaps even trying something completely new is more difficult than it sounds. They cling to what they know, no matter how tired of it they are or how stuck they feel. In German-speaking countries, even children hear: “Shoemaker, stick to your last.” For Hollywood icon Sharon Stone this was no longer an option as she had been offered no interesting roles for many years. Stone has often said how hard this was on her. Ingenuity and courage were required, and she has plenty of both.
At her home in Beverly Hills, Stone is surrounded by art; she has been collecting the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat for a long time. During the pandemic, she took up painting herself, or rather, she took it up again. Art was a big part of her life as a child, her aunt was a painter and gave her lessons. Half a lifetime later, when the lockdown had Los Angeles firmly in its grip, a friend gave her a paint-by-numbers kit, which broke the spell, and she soon started buying canvases and paints and began painting feverishly. When she posted pieces on Instagram, a well-known art critic spotted them and soon she had her first show. The magazine Artnet wrote: “A big reason why she’s being taken seriously as an artist is because she takes her art seriously.”
Sharon Stone says: “It quickly became an obsession.” We’re chatting via Zoom, and in Los Angeles, it’s early in the morning.
What fascinates you most about painting?
“Well, the thing that’s so nice and different from film is that I don’t have to wait for an entire production budget and location. I don’t have to wait for all of the departments to get together for me to work. I can just go to my studio, turn on the lights and start. I love the long hours of actual physical and artistic labor.”
Experimenting with your talent and publicly presenting your first efforts always requires a lot of courage, but for a well-known star like Sharon Stone, this is even more daunting, nat-
urally. But rather than timidly displaying small pieces, she went all out, even at her very first exhibition in March 2023 in L.A. and filled the room with large, powerful paintings.
The art world is just as competitive as the film world, were you not afraid to venture into it?
“I’ve spent a lifetime of people telling me that I’m too tall, too short, too fat, too thin, too blond, too brown, too something. Eventually I have to say it falls on deaf ears because I’m never going to be everything to everyone. And I almost expect people to tell me what’s wrong with me as something that they do instead of trying to figure out what’s right with them.”
“I’ve spent a lifetime of people telling me I’m too tall, too short, too fat, too thin.”
SHARON STONE
A few months ago, at the start of the Berlinale, Stone opened an exhibition in Berlin, her first in Europe. She didn’t have herself driven from the airport to her hotel, but instead went straight to Auguststrasse to see her paintings at Galerie Deschler. The gallery had previously emailed her the floor plan so that she could determine herself exactly where each of the twelve works would hang. In fact, Stone designed the show, which she called “Totems,” down to the last detail. All the paintings were completed in 2023 and there’s a snake somewhere in each one of them. Shedding, new beginnings, that is her theme. One of her large pieces is dedicated to her nephew, who died when he was only 11 months old. Stone’s art is about beauty but always also about fundamental experiences such as war, love, loss and hope.
In 2001 she survived a stroke caused by a cerebral hemorrhage. Doctors gave her a one-percent chance of survival. For years she fought her way back to life and had to learn to

speak and walk again. When she finally got better, she realized that no one in Hollywood had been waiting for her to return. “I had to go back to the back of the line,” as she once put it.
The superstar of the ’90s found herself facing a void. She still takes medication to prevent another stroke. Stone hid such details for many years out of fear that they would adversely affect a Hollywood comeback. “A disability doesn’t really work in my industry,” she says. “Painting has helped me not feel that anxiety, the anxiety of perhaps not being accepted.”
“Many in Hollywood didn’t know what to do with me as I said things that were alarming.”
SHARON STONE
At first she placed the easel in her bedroom, but soon realized that she would be needing a lot more space, so she turned a separate room into her studio. Now, finally, she had something to focus her energy on again, no longer did she have to wait for roles that never came, no longer wonder how on earth she’d been so sidelined. She, Sharon Stone, who had once been courted from all sides. But now: four solo exhibitions in the last 12 months – in Los Angeles, Greenwich, Connecticut, San Francisco and, of course, Berlin.
Did anyone help you plan your foray into the art world?
“No. I manifest things, then I meditate. There’s only one way to do it: work, preparation, work, work, work. Without that you can’t do anything.” It doesn’t matter who you are. She laughs her deep laugh: “Well, you don’t get to be Sharon Stone either without years of work. There isn’t any shortcut. I was talking to Oprah the other day and saying how much it annoyed
me that people were trying to take her down or be aggressive towards her. She asked me why I thought people were doing it and I said because people want to be you but they don’t want to put the work in. You get to a pinnacle of success and then people start trying to tear you down. You don’t become someone because you’re just doing nothing, it takes decades and decades of work. And the painting didn’t come because I was sitting around, it came because I spent every day that I wasn’t on a set in a foreign country in a museum. Studying, looking, viewing, drawing. It’s not a mystery.”
When did you realize that your painting could turn into something bigger?
“I think when people started fighting over the purchase of a couple of my larger pieces during my second exhibition, real collectors on museum boards.”
Painting is something spiritual for her, she says: She loses herself in her paintings, turns up the music and completely forgets about time. “Then it’s three o’clock in the morning very quickly,” she says. A lot of things happen in her paintings, which reflect a life that would have broken someone with less strength. Sharon Stone grew up in Pennsylvania, the second of four children. In March 2021 she published a highly acclaimed and very intimate autobiography, “The Beauty of Living Twice.” In it she describes the poverty and violence that accompanied her childhood and youth. Young Sharon grew up surrounded by flat, farming country. Some of her classmates drove a tractor to school. She lost herself to dreams of art at a very early age. At 15, she applied to the nearest college to take courses in art and creative writing. She was a gifted student and won a scholarship, but eventually dropped out to model in New York.
Her background shaped her, was part of the reason Stone never gave up. Before her famous role in “Basic Instinct” turned her into an international sensation overnight, she had already appeared in 17 films, and kept hoping for a breakthrough. Today she is a doting mother to three sons who live with her in Los Angeles.
36
Stone openly shares details of her daily life on Instagram, there’s always something going on and she’s obviously got good friends. But 2024 will be the year of love, she has decided. Her dating life has been pretty dormant recently, and the name Sharon Stone doesn’t necessarily help. A few years ago, as she posted on Twitter, the dating platform Bumble blocked her when she set up an account because they thought it was a fake.
Stone has given back a lot. After her former acting teacher died of AIDS, she got involved in AIDS relief at a time when being associated with the illness was still stigmatized. She raised millions and millions of dollars over 25 years, for which she was recognized by the Harvard University Foundation in 2005. Stone has accompanied humanitarian organizations to the Middle East, Africa and the Himalayas, worked for the homeless and for abused women and children. Last year, the United Nations granted her a Global Citizen of the Year Award.
Stone was nominated for an Oscar for her role in “Casino” and won a Golden Globe. She would still love to take on new, complex roles, but she is no longer defined by her acting career alone. “Basic Instinct” was more than 30 years ago, a groundbreaking film that brought Stone lots of fame, but also overshadowed her life, all because of that revealing fraction of a second in which she uncrosses her legs. Stone as a seductive killer, a living male fantasy.
Perhaps Stone’s dilemma was that people felt overwhelmed by her: too beautiful, to smart, too witty and sharp-tongued, too uncontrollable. In 1995 she told the Los Angeles Times: “I think for a long time people just did not know what to do with me. I looked like a Barbie doll and then I had this voice like I spend my life in a bar, and I said things that were alarming.”
Two things Stone kept saying, for instance, was that she was paid $500,000 for “Basic Instinct” whereas Michael Douglas received $14 million. If the gender gap is closing slowly, then Sharon Stone had a lot to do with it. She was an early advocate for #MeToo, has been vocal about
Hollywood’s culture of toxic masculinity and described situations in which it was made quite clear that having sex with a colleague or director would benefit her career. She has yet to hear an apology.
Do you sometimes wonder what your career might have been like if you’d been a man?
“As Olivia Coleman says, if her name was Oliver Coleman, it would be very different for her. Talking about these things is the freedom that women are finally giving themselves. And even in the face of all this oppression, we are just tired of being shoved into a small corner.”
“You don’t become someone from just doing nothing. It takes decades of hard work.”
SHARON STONE
What have you learned over the last few years that you didn’t know before?
“After I had my stroke, I had to learn that the world doesn’t really take care of you. I think you only truly understand this once you’ve learned the really, really hard lessons. You have to draw hard lines. I learned to say an extremely hard ‘no’ because my life depended on it. Of course people thought I wasn’t being nice and spoke badly about me. I’m a tough person, you know.”
You are also admired for this. “People might admire you, but it doesn’t mean they want to hang out with you or hire you.”
Happiness is a choice, Stone says. “It’s a discipline, a daily decision.”
Do you feel liberated these days? “Yes, because I have nothing to hide anymore.”

or this unique oportunity I took a trip to the other side of the world.
After my 24-hour flight via Singapore to Auckland, I arrive at the Golfhotel Kingloch Manor hotel with a spectacular view over Lake Taupo. Its the biggest in the country and locals compare its imposing size with Singapore. In front of the hotel entrance, five Ferrari Purosangue vehicles catch my eye. In Rosso Portofino and Blu Corsa, their colors glisten freshly washed in the sun. The car, I have been told, is a small sensation. The first Ferrari model with four doors and four comfortable seats. A thoroughbred Ferrari for everyday use – and so coveted it’s already sold out until the next delivery in 2026.
I am surrounded by vast green meadows and endless fields as far as the eye can see. If I didn’t know better, this landscape around Lake Taupo – where no more than 42,000 people live – could pass for the Scottish Highlands. The sky seems moody – and is shifting from blue and sunny patches to thick gray rain clouds. A Ferrari employee appears and passionately polishes all the cars to a high gloss. I am the only woman invited to the second part of Ferrari’s New Zealand Grand Tour. While it used to be mainly men who were madly in love with the sportcars of the legendary Italian sportcar manufacturer, the female fan base is catching up dynamically worldwide. Ferrari does not publicly discuss its customers, but in August of last year, the South China Morning Post and Bloomberg both reported that 25 percent of new and used Ferraris in China were being sold to women. This means that today in China, every fourth Ferrari is bought by a woman! Driving 700 kilometers from Taupo via Hastings to Wellington at the southern tip of North Island in New Zealand – that’s what’s on our agenda for the next few days. Before dinner, we get to know the Ferrari team in Maranello, Italy, via a live call and receive a briefing for the tour. They are visibly proud of their finished masterpiece. And even though the press has repeatedly called their new supercar an SUV, none of the journalists present dares to use that term. No wonder – when asked about the beginning boom ten years ago and whether Ferrari would now also develop a sports utility vehicle, Chief Design Officer Flavio Manzoni
declared at the time, “Never! Enzo Ferrari would turn in his grave.” Nevertheless, Ferrari went ahead and developed a car that combines their famous sports car spirit with the comfort for every day, but without making any compromises. Only now, they all explain, Ferrari is ready to present a supercar that meets all these requirements. This is mainly due to the Active Suspension System, the new chassis, and a V12 naturally aspirated engine which, entirely new, serves as a front-mid-engine for a unique driving experience and stands out

to the way car doors usually open. Ferrari affectionately calls the two rear doors the “hugging doors.” The Purosangue is also the first Ferrari with a tailgate and fold-down rear seats – and thus the largest trunk in the Italian racing stable. I start the engine and hear the deep roar of the V12 engine, which is as legendary to the Ferrari brand as the prancing horse on the red flag. I gently press the accelerator to feel how quickly the car responds. Once on the country road, I quickly gain confidence and soon feel more and more comfortable behind the Ferrari wheel. I can see and feel that every detail of the Purosangue has been carefully thought out and developed in loving craftsmanship. No wonder, I think, that a Ferrari is considered one of the highest luxury goods. Even though the starting price for the Purosangue is currently at €380,000, any Ferrari is considered a solid investment.
The next morning, the time has finally come, and we get to try out what has been so extensively described to us. It’s the moment I’ve been looking forward to like a little child: I slip into the driver’s seat of the Purosangue. Just the feeling of getting into a Ferrari is a sensual experience and makes my heart skip a beat. I look around and get comfortable inspecting the cockpit. Ferrari states that the Purosangue was developed with nearly 85% sustainably produced raw materials. The fabric roof lining of the car is made from recycled polyester, the carpet from polyamide recycled from fishing nets. The seats look like leather but are actually made from a newly developed Alcantara, which is also sourced from recycled polyester. Ferrari Purosangue is the world’s first car to use this extraordinary version of Alcantara made from 68% recycled post-consumer polyester. In order to successfully use it, the brand had to obtain a Recycled Claim Standard (RCS) certification from ICEA. Another special feature of the Purosangue cockpit is the generous co-pilot display, where the passenger can share in the unique Ferrari experience. To put my bag on the rear seats, I pull the flat button under the window on the outside rear door, and the so-called “welcome door” opens automatically, contrary
Last November, a 1962 Ferrari GTO caused a sensation when it was auctioned for $52 million, making it the second most expensive car in the world sold at a Sotheby’s auction. Interest in ordering a Ferrari, however, does not necessarily mean that you will also have the chance to own one. Background checks and a long-standing relationship with Scuderia Ferrari in Italy are just some of the requirements necessary for one day calling yourself a Ferrari owner. Additionally, every owner commits to never making any atypical changes to their car. This careful and considered culture, established since the founding of the company by Enzo Ferrari in 1939 (first as Auto Avio Costruzioni, renamed Ferrari Auto in 1957, the name Ferrari having been used as a brand since 1947) has created a valuable enterprise that employs around 5,000 people today, producing roughly 13,000 cars per year. In March of last year, Ferrari’s value was €77.78 billion. For comparison, Volkswagen employs around 200,000 people, produces 40,000 cars per day – nearly 9 million cars per year – and is valued at “only” €66.83 billion. Our road trip takes us from Taupo via Hastings to Wellington at the southern tip of New Zealand’s North Island. Passing snow-capped volcanic landscapes and meadows, unfortunately, we are not allowed to drive much faster than the legally permitted 110 km/h.

JANIS JOPLIN remains forever connected with the hotel by “Chelsea Hotel #2,” the song Leonard Cohen wrote about their one-night stand.
“I had no concept of what life at the Chelsea Hotel would be like when we checked in, but I soon realized it was a tremendous stroke of luck to end up there.”
PATTI SMITH
arge-scale remodeling can go badly wrong, especially when it’s a building that has its own character. Very often, it is precisely the interplay of perceived shortcomings that gives a historic building its charm. So in the summer of 2011, when the Hotel Chelsea on 23rd Street in Manhattan closed for renovation for the first time in its long history, and guests and residents alike were forced to make room for construction workers, it felt like an era was coming to an end. Old New York, as many lamented, would soon be gone forever. It was in the process of being refurbished to death, the rock ‘n’ roll disappearing beneath a luxury veneer. Developers, many agreed, would end up ruining the idiosyncratic nature of the building and destroying a unique biotope that had evolved over many decades.
After all, the Chelsea was so much more than a hotel. It embodied an attitude toward life, was a refuge, creative and just a bit crazy – and stood 12 stories high in an enormous historic building dating back to 1884. It was a place that attracted like-minded people, mavericks and geniuses and even one or two ghosts.
The list of people who lived at the Chelsea reads like a Who’s Who of popular culture. It included Bob Dylan, Julian Schnabel and Stanley Kubrick as well as Ethan Hawke and Andy Warhol’s muse Edie Sedg wick, who set her room on fire by mistake. It’s where William S. Burroughs wrote “Naked Lunch” and Jack Kerouac “On the Road.” Many people stayed for months or years, others stayed for decades.

Café Chelsea, which was inspired by French bistros, offers everything from ravioli to oysters on the menu. The one drawback: Tables fill up very quickly.
You didn’t go to the Chelsea to sleep but to party the night away – or to become famous.
53
The playwright once described how just stepping into the elevator immediately got you high because of the thick haze of marihuana smoke you encountered. Sid Vicious, the bassist for the Sex Pistols, was charged with stabbing and killing his sleeping girlfriend Nancy Spungen in room 100 while high on heroin. Leonard Cohen immortalized the hotel and the memorable night he spent there with Janis Joplin in one of his best songs: “... Giving me head on the unmade bed while the limousines wait in the street …”
Over the decades, many of those who were drawn to New York by the promise of fame used the Chelsea as their first port of call because the rules here were different. Even the name of the hotel breaks with convention. The famous neon sign high up on the facade quite clearly says on it Hotel Chelsea, but residents and New Yorkers alike call it the Chelsea Hotel or simply the Chelsea.
Once renovation plans were in place, this hotel with its improvisational talent became the ultimate symbol of gentrification. The scaffolding went up against the old red-brick exterior and what happened next was entirely unexpected. Nothing. For nearly ten years there was no progress whatsoever. Investors pulled out, new owners came and went, disputes with the city were carried out concerning building permits, dozens of residents sued for the right to stay in their apartments, and in the end, there was no construction, just a huge construction site. The Chelsea fell into a waking coma and as far as anyone could see, this is how it would stay.
Two years ago in the summer, the unexpected happened again, and the hotel reopened. In a remarkable sleight of hand, it had been renovated from top to bottom but appeared to have hardly changed at all. The Chelsea had remained true to itself, just freshened up a bit. It now has Instagram and TikTok accounts, and influencers frequent the French café.
The worn out sofas and dubious wiring were replaced, as were the gurgling radiators. But the red and white striped awning is there on the sidewalk like it always was, the wroughtiron balconies have been preserved and the legendary Spanish restaurant El Quijote has been given a second lease of life. It will be celebrating it’s 100th anniversary in just a few years’ time. The team behind the Hotel Chelsea,
which had previously demonstrated what it means to create a hotel with soul at both The Jane and The Bowery hotels, is a trio of hoteliers: Sean MacPherson, Ira Drukier and Richard Born. All three must have a diplomatic knack too, because 40 of the Chelsea’s longterm residents agreed to put the past behind them and stay on without making a fuss.
The new owners have also memorialized long-time manager and former part-owner Stanley Bard, who went to Florida to retire and died there in 2017 at the age of 82, by naming a magnificent ballroom after him. Bard took over the management from his father in 1964, and he was the man who allowed the eccentric artists’ colony to develop and decided who got a room and who did not. Those who couldn’t afford the rent were allowed to pay for their room with paintings. These works of art have meanwhile grown into a formidable collection. The quality varies, but even the more amateurish attempts have found their way back into the new Chelsea Hotel. Some of them hang in the renovated lobby where they help to make it look

even less like every other luxury hotel worldwide. The cool vibe also hasn’t changed, perhaps it’s even gotten more intense, but giant sofas still invite guests to sit down and engage in conversations that will change the world.
What’s gone are the broken and destructive elements that the Chelsea was previously unable to shake off. Guests now have a rooftop spa to look forward to – a wonderfully peaceful place to relax. On their website, the new owners explain that they define the hotel by its history, of course, but also “by it’s ever-evolving, unmistakable otherness. Solid and sumptuous, eccentric yet beautiful, the Chelsea is a world unto itself: a decadent palace of peculiarity.”

CRUISER
Often referred to as the most beautiful yacht in the world, the Europa is celebrating her 25th anniversary this year. GG had the opportunity to travel on board from Halifax in Canada to New York City along the U.S. East Coast. Why small but exquisite is a fine combination or how Hapag-Lloyd ignites the love for very special cruises.
By Michaela Cordes
It’s one of those exhilarating moments when you feel that the weather gods are beaming down on your plans: I am surrounded by the sparkling Atlantic, glistening sea spray and a brilliant blue sky. From my sunchair on the deck of the Europa, I spot a waiter balancing a tray full of champagne glasses. I adjust my sunglasses, snuggle into the cozy blanket and focus my gaze past the railing towards our final destination. On the hazy horizon, I can make out the ever-expanding outlines of the New York City skyline, towards which we are now heading. It’s a moment that has long been up there at the top of my bucket list: to sail into New York.
As a true Hamburger, I grew up by the water and on boats. Some of my fondest childhood memories include adventures at sea: in oilskins, in constant rain, sailing on the Baltic Sea. But a cruise? I hadn’t been much of a fan of this increasingly popular way of traveling.
“After a week on board the Europa I am converted – and in love!”
The idea of being on one of those floating skyscrapers with over 6,000 other passengers, being offered nonstop amusement and entertainment, a kind of Club Med on the water. No – but thank you! Just thinking about it turned me into a snob.
Until now. After a week on board the exquisite Europa, which, at 200 meters, is only 20 meters longer than the Azzam (currently the world’s largest private yacht at 180 meters), I am converted. And I have developed an almost affectionate relationship with this ship, which has transported me in the most beautiful manner to the gates of Manhattan in the last few
days. This year, the flagship of the Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd celebrates its 25th anniversary.
A trip down the East Coast of the USA was on our itinerary. We started in the Canadian city of Halifax and continued from beautiful Portland, Maine to Boston (where we went on an excursion to Harvard University), to Provincetown, Massachusetts, where, after a spectacular whale-watching tour, I could check another long-awaited adventure off my bucket list. I owe this unforgettable experience to the excellent team of the travel agency on board, which organizes everything for its guests, from extraordinary excursions like helicopter flights to private limousines.
From the small observation boat in the midst of the plankton-rich waters, we saw countless humpback whales leaping out of the water at the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. At this time of year (from April to October), the marine giants gorge themselves daily on up to a ton of fish per whale to prepare for their long journey and mating in the West Indies. After each excursion, when I return to the ship, it feels a little more like coming “home.” This is due to the special warmth and sincerity that I experience on the Europa. This unique atmosphere is largely created by Gabi Haupt, the product manager of the Europa, who knows each of the 285 employees by name. Considered by many to be the heart of the cruise ship, she and her team are also responsible for creating individual journeys.
With many repeat guests who come back for more (most book two to three weeks), creating new routes and destinations is a challenge. Due to complex factors like reserving port slots and booking excursions ashore, preparation often starts three years before a cruise actually departs. Over the past 20 years, passenger requirements have changed significantly – and with them the Europa. Shortly after its completion in 1999, it was still considered a traditional cruise ship with daily gala dinners

The highlight of our trip. Passengers gather on deck to watch as we sail into New York harbor.
at ten-person tables for which people got all dressed up. Today, in the traditional Europa restaurant, you won’t find large tables anymore, but many small ones. Tuxedos and evening gowns are passé, only a jacket is required for gentlemen. The fact that the etiquette is much more relaxed on board today, but no less elegant, is also underscored by the conversion of half of the onboard hair salon into a kids’ club.
To meet the changing demands of an increasingly younger generation, the Europa underwent extensive renovation in 2019. In record-breaking 14 days, 800 craftsmen and 60 subcontractors at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg built a 700-square-meter spa and a gym on top of the ship. Innovative fitness classes, nutrition workshops in collaboration with physician and author Dr. Anne Fleck, as well as lectures by renowned experts on health and relaxation have been part of the program ever since. The maximum of 350 passengers can be accommodated in 200 veranda suites.
The culinary experiences offered on board have also received an upgrade. The Italian restaurant Venezia was expanded by a few square meters and at the stern of the ship, the very popular Sansibar – well-known among fans of the North Sea island of Sylt – opened up. Inspired by one of the cruises he had worked, on which he liked taking his mattress up on deck at night to sleep under the open sky, three-star chef Kevin Fehling created the new gourmet restaurant The Globe. Another haute cuisine temple is the new caviar bar Pearls (all restaurant visits are included in the price, you just have to make a reservation). Here, Chef Michael Hoffmann prepares an extravagant six-course caviar menu, which delights us with the variety of ways that delicious fish eggs can be served.
The Captain’s Dinner is still a popular highlight for which guests like to dress up more elegantly. Captain Jörg Peter Berendsen, who was raised in Lübeck in northern Germany, worked for 15 years on sailing cruise ships like the Sea Cloud and the Alexander von Humboldt II. During our visit to the bridge, he enthuses that he has been on board since June 2022 and regards the MS Europa to be the Olympus of
cruise ships: “I consider it a real task to maintain this beautiful tradition. For this, I was willing to give up sails.”
Just before we reach New York, he and his crew have a very special surprise in store: After dinner, we are invited on deck for a rare spectacle that takes place over the next few hours. In the middle of the dark night, on the calm Atlantic, we encounter the equally brightly lit sister ship Europa 2, an event that is celebrated with great applause and a loud blowing of the ship’s horn. At the same time, a dinghy crosses the waves from ship to ship, taking the sculpture the “Wanderer” from the Europa to the Europa 2. From there it will move on to other Hapag-Lloyd ships and travel the world.
“Tuxedos and gowns are passe - instead there is now a spa and a gym.”
Yes, emotions run high on this special cruise and reach their climax when we arrive in New York City and cruise past the Statue of Liberty to Frank Sinatra’s famous song “New York, New York” echoing from the speakers. It may sound “cheesy,” as Americans like to say, but standing among all the other passengers on deck, a glass of champagne in my hand and a broad smile on my face, passing the Freedom Tower and the West Side Highway, with a clear view over New Jersey and Manhattan, is unforgettable!
By the way, in its belly, this ship transports not only 14 tons of fresh food, seven tons of fish and lobster and 60 kilograms of caviar, but also 12,000 bottles of wine and champagne. A few hours later, we are docked at Pier 90, from where I can walk straight from the ship into Midtown Manhattan. In the evening, I enjoy one last drink in the Sansibar, where I chat with a lady who clearly qualifies as a regular guest. She has taken more than 30 cruises on this ship and raves: “I love the Europa – it’s simply a soul ship!”

In these moments, I wish I could briefly teleport myself to a German autobahn to fully enjoy the Purosangue’s maximum speed of 312 km/h. But here, they are very strict about speed limits and preserving and conserving the unspoilt nature. I already realized this upon my arrival in Auckland when the customs officer showed an unusually intense interest in the soles of my shoes. He explained that tourists should bring new hiking shoes with them to avoid inadvertently introducing

foreign bacteria that could threaten the local flora and fauna. In Hastings, we make a stop to visit the kiwi, the endangered national bird of New Zealand. At the Kiwi Sanctuary, we learn that there were around 12 million of these birds in the 19th century. Today, there are only about 60,000 left. The kiwi is an extremely unusual creature: a bird that cannot fly, has fur instead of feathers and nostrils at the tip of its beak. This shy animal lays a huge
egg twice a year, which accounts for 25% of its body weight. A kiwi chick is born with a full stomach and does not need to be fed.
Just before we reach Wellington, the landscape changes, and I suddenly feel deeply reminded of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. We drive through hilly, expansive green landscapes – and see sheep everywhere. It really seems true that there are more sheep than people in New Zealand. The vegetation reminds us so much of the famous films that I wouldn’t be surprised if a hobbit jumped right out of the bushes at any given moment. Peter Jackson, the director and producer of the famous, award-winning movies, not only filmed them in this area (near Lake Taupo, in Matamata). All the props, special effects and costumes were created at the Weta Workshop, which we visit shortly before we reach our final destination in Wellington. During the exciting studio tour, we learn that Weta has won five Oscars and four BAFTAS over the past 30 years. Shortly before arriving at our hotel, it’s time to say goodbye to my Purosangue, which has really grown on me over the past few days. All the Ferraris will be transferred by ferry to the South Island of New Zealand for the next stage of the New Zealand Grand Tour. “Ciao bellissima,” I think as I step out for the last time and reluctantly hand over the stylish Ferrari key, “È stato un grande piacere!” It was a great pleasure!

A view out of this world: An historic villa right on the banks of Lake Como.
la dolce vita
Some places on earth feel like something straight out of a fairytale. This historic residence with private access to Lake Como celebrates the Italian way of life at its finest. Like a rare gem, it shines as magnificently on the inside as it does on the outside, setting the scene for balmy summer evenings by the water’s edge.

Arriving home by boat, romantic dreams are a lived reality in this lakefront idyll.
ove c’è acqua, c’è vita.” Where there is water there is life. This Italian proverb captures the essence of this place precisely. Lake Como – or Lago di Como, as the locals call it –stretches across Lombardy with its three long, narrow arms acting as a Y-shaped life force. This elegant region in northern Italy is one of the most sought-after parts of the country.
The mere thought of living here is enough to transport anyone into a dream-like realm. As the surface of the lake glistens in the sun, the mountain range rises up behind it like a perfectly painted panorama. One particularly special way to arrive home here is by boat, gliding gently through the shallow waters, past the jetty and straight into this villa’s very own boathouse.
This splendid residence is situated in a prime location in Moltrasio, on the western shores of Lake Como. With its historic centre and sprawling estates, this charming municipality is regarded as one of the pearls of the lake, set against a panorama that is endlessly fascinating. Such magnificent Lombardy estates have long
Lavish interiors boast opulent finishes, while Lake Como seems close enough to touch outside the window. The attention to detail throughout is astounding.
73
The villa is looking for a custodian who will treasure the magnificent heritage of this place and its exquisite design details.
The finest handpainted murals on the walls, coffered ceilings and antique furnishings all give the rooms a distinctly regal feel.
75
It’s a view that never fails to amaze: The sun terrace is a perpetual stage to the lake and mountain panorama.

A place to dream! Those fortunate enough to sleep here are greeted in the morning by the most beautiful views across the luxuriant blue of Lake Como.
been owned by aristocratic families and wealthy entrepreneurs. Thanks to its mild, sunny climate, the region is particularly sought after during the summer season. It still attracts high-profile individuals who have either acquired a magnificent property here as a second home or come and stay in one of the many grand hotels on the lake. The small town of Cernobbio and the world-famous Villa d’Este are just a few minutes away. The palazzo was built in the 16th century by the architect Pellegrino Pellegrini as a summer residence for the Cardinal of Como, Tolomeo Gallio, and has served as a tranquil retreat for the aristocracy throughout
Day-to-day living or vacationing –in this paradise the two merge seamlessly into one.
its long history. Villa d’Este has been welcoming guests as an elegant luxury resort since 1873.
A taste of this genuine Italian opulence can be experienced in a private setting inside this villa for sale, which dates from the early 20th century and is on the market together with almost its entire inventory. It is deemed a masterpiece of classical architecture – a style typical of the estates built around the lake during this period. Surrounded by a flourishing park with centuries-old trees, palms and magnolias, the property affords a view over Lake Como that is second to none. While the estate offers ample privacy, the town centre is still nonetheless within walking distance.
A driveway winds its way through the garden to the gates of the main villa, which extends over three levels. The ground floor plays host to a lavish living area featuring several lounges, as well as a kitchen, dining room, veranda and guest bathroom. The master bedroom with an en suite bathroom awaits on the first floor, along with a study, two further bedrooms, two bathrooms and anoth-
er living area. Meanwhile, the second floor affords even more living space, bedrooms, bathrooms, and a sauna room.
Every corner of this property impresses with its rich heritage, grand charm and impeccable details, which include coffered ceilings, marble and parquet floors, precious fabrics, and an impressive main fireplace. The interior furnishings and antiques have been collected by the French owners and the estate custodians before them. Many of the walls are adorned with eye-catching wallpaper and elaborately handpainted murals, which have either been preserved in their original state or painstakingly restored. Pillars, vaulted ceilings and arched windows round off the ornate details both inside and out.
The main living area opens up to a large outdoor space enclosed by lush greenery and palm trees. There is an outdoor kitchen, various sunny spots and shaded seating areas that tempt residents to relocate their lives outside during the milder months of the year and enjoy the panoramic views of Lake Como and the surrounding mountain scenery. A stone stairway leads down to the terrace below with a large swimming pool, a sunbathing area and a pool house surrounded by jasmine.
Those who reside here get to choose: take a dip in the lake on a morning or swim laps in their own private pool. Another special highlight is the boathouse at the foot of the property, facing out towards the lake. This stone building provides ample space to accommodate a boat and water sports equipment, as well as another room that could be transformed into a waterside wellness spa. The private jetty leads out onto the lake via a floating pontoon.
Not far at all from the main villa, there are two separate residential units to be found in the grounds of this impressive estate. Il Castelletto, built in the style of a small castle complete with decorative turrets, hosts a living room, bedroom, bathroom, and veranda. The other is a stone outbuilding with interiors that include a living room with a kitchenette, two bedrooms, and a bathroom. The impressive lakefront listing also comes complete with a commodious double garage, which is easily accessible from the road behind the villa.

Place of intimacy
A new center for the performing arts designed by star architect Frank Gehry is going up in Downtown Los Angeles .
A 9,200-square-meter performance venue, it will extend the existing campus of the Colburn School of Performing Arts, a private school dedicated to music and dance in California’s largest city. The highlight of the new Colburn Center will be the Terri and Jerry Kohl Hall, a concert hall seating 1,000 people. Thanks to the innovative way it has been designed, with various places for artists to appear apart from the central stage, the hall will be versatile enough to host orchestra performances, opera, musical theater and dance. The purpose of the circular design is to create more intimacy between artists and audience, and once completed, the Terri and Jerri Kohl hall will be the home of the Colburn Orchestra, the flagship ensemble of the Colburn School’s Conservatory of Music.
The Colburn Center will also include a dance studio theater for up-and-coming ballet dancers, a roof garden for outdoor performances, a study center and modern, reasonably priced performance spaces for artists and organizations from the community. Forming a trio with the Walt Disney Concert Hall across the street and the dining, hospitality and living complex The Grand, the Colburn Center will be the third Frank O. Gehry design to go up in the same area. The design team was entirely made up of local talent. It included Japanese acoustic designer Yasuhisa Toyota, who also worked on the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and multiple Grammy Award-winning sound designer Frederick Vogler.
