YACHTING WELCOME
Dear Reader, urchasing a superyacht has always been regarded as an emotional undertaking. While this is true, there is also nothing more fulfilling than being a part of the building process. Selecting the builder, choosing the shape of the hull, deciding how much deck space you would like and how large each interior should be is all part of the experience. There is simply no comparison to hand-picking every detail and taking part in the journey. We are seeing a rise in demand for new builds and want to assist our clients as they plot their route through this delicate process. There are currently a total of 773 superyachts being built this year alone (a slight increase over 2017) with an average length of just over 40 metres. This confirmed our plan to dedicate the fourth GG Yachting edition to new builds and refits. This year has brought many exciting new developments at our company, including the official appointment of Federico Bennewitz as the new Commercial Director. He will oversee the sales and charter department for the French Riviera and Monaco, as well as the ongoing growth of the sales team. Mr. Bennewitz has over 30 years of experience in the yachting industry and has worked on many impressive new build and refit projects with such renowned brands as Perini Navi, Sanlorenzo, Viareggio Superyachts, Nautor Group, Wally, and Logica. In our Yachting Advice column on the last page, Mr. Bennewitz shares his wealth of experience in superyacht new builds and refits. He provides valuable guidance and addresses the most difficult aspects of both processes that need to be considered before deciding to embark on such a project. Engel & Vรถlkers Yachting aims to be a full-service yachting brokerage for its clients. Our yachting team is committed to delivering the same excellent standard of service that has come to be expected from Engel & Vรถlkers. Whether you are interested in purchasing or chartering a yacht, Engel & Vรถlkers can help navigate you through the journey.

A long-respected company with a reputation for conservatism has spent the last few years quietly transforming itself into one of the most exciting and innovative shipyards in Italian yacht building. he Bahamas is made up of over 700 islands and 2,400 coral reefs (Cays). While some remain strongholds of mass tourism, the remote Out Islands, on the other hand, are sparsely populated and completely at one with nature: with turquoise waters and miles of perfect beaches without a single footprint in sight. Gentle winds escort yachts to anchor bays where adventures of one’s youth come to life – from treasure islands and pirates to the castaway life of a Robinson Crusoe. 1

PIGGING AROUND
The marina in George Town is akin to a united nations: Yachts from many different countries head to the main town in the Exuma Islands before sailing on to the Exuma National Park. The island of Shrout Cay is traversed by flat fjords dotted with mangrove forests. The ideal place for a dinghy ride through nature: with not a soul to be seen far and wide, and only the birds overhead and the lobsters, conch snails and turtles underwater for company. It is perhaps the contrasts that make the Exumas so fascinating. Some islands are under private ownership. The jet set are at home here, including the likes of the actor Jonny Depp. Yet at the Big Major’s Spot it is pigs who play the starring role: Having fled from a farm many years ago, around 25 of them live here, play around in the water and enjoy being fed. They have long been superstars on the Bahamas tourism scene. Just along from the bay of pigs is the island of Staniel Cay and the Thunderball grotto. It was here in “Thunderball” (1965) that secret agent James Bond discovered atomic bombs hidden away. Fortunately the reality is much more appealing: after passing through a low-lying tunnel, a cave opens up inside the cliff full of brightly coloured fish. Later on in the Staniel Cay Yacht Club, the day can draw to a fitting close with Kalik beer and snacks. Association and national flags from around the world hang from the ceiling, while photos on the walls are a reminder of the bygone days when 007 was sat at the bar. 2
Cat Island
HERITAGE & HEIGHTS
Does the name come from the pirate Arthur Catt who is said to have buried his treasure on the remote islands at the beginning of the 18th century? Many storytellers, musicians and actors have grown up in the gently rolling hills of Cat Island, perhaps most famously Sir Sidney Poitier, who won an Oscar in 1964. Ancient churches and decaying plantation houses are testimony to the history of the settlers. Cat Island is also where the Bahamian rake-and-scrap music originates, played on accordion and musical instruments made from saws and old washing machine drums. Excellent diving and snorkeling awaits from the marina at Hawk Nest Point in the southwest of the island.

GETTING DEEP WITH C.C.
In 1492, Christopher Columbus entered a new world. A large white cross marks the spot, if legend is to be believed. It may be the most popular place for a holiday snap, but the island’s true attractions remain the diving and kite-surfing to be had. Divers of all levels will enjoy an experience to remember here in “Devils Claw” and “Vicky’s Riff”, surrounded by trusting stingrays and gentle nurse sharks. Meanwhile you can get very close to the wind in the lagoon on Snow Bay Beach, one of the best places to kite-surf in the world. And for all those less interested in that: the immaculate beaches of San Salvador are deserted for the most part and simply begging to have someone lay a beach towel down on them. 4
Rum Cay
PEACE OF MIND
Nassau, the bustling capital of the Bahamas, and Rum Cay are just 296 kilometres apart – and worlds apart at the same time. Port Nelson, a small village nestled between coconut palm groves, is the only inhabited place on the entire island. Its central point where people come together is the Sumner Point Marina, with a cosy restaurant and bar. A diving excursion from here to discover the wreck of HMS Conqueror is also well worth it. Great Britain’s first propeller-driven warship hit a reef here in 1861 and sank, thankfully without any loss of life. 5

SO CLOSE TO PARADISE
130 kilometres long, almost 6.5 kilometres wide – with coastlines that could hardly be more different. Cliffs facing out towards the Atlantic descending down into the tossing dark blue waves, and dazzling white beaches on the “Caribbean” side that glide gently into still turquoise waters. Upping anchor in Calabash Bay is a moment for pure relaxation. Surrounded by lovely people and cool drinks enjoying the sunset. Can it possibly get any better than this?

This process is always dictated in part by overriding rules and technical hurdles, but it also presents the opportunity to push the boundaries further and take on more and more interesting projects. Could you tell us a little about your professional background? After finishing my university studies, I went on to pursue my irresistible attraction to the world of yachting. Having worked for many years together with Studio Sturchio, I founded my own studio in 2000. My design efforts have focused mainly on yachts since then, although I have always continued to take on design projects for luxury residences, villas and buildings. I believe in exploring the value of crossover elements, avoiding the desire to provoke, with an open approach free from any preconceptions, in order to draw on all the natural and technical resources available. I also apply an approach aimed at incorporating elements that are not typically the expression of a particular sector or of yacht designs, as can be seen with Stella Maris and Quinta Essentia (2016) or – by way of an inverse example – in the case of the skyscraper built in Hong Kong with Vitruvius Yachts. Could you name a ‘dream project’? A dream project in my eyes is one that sees the interior designer engaged from the very outset, in the early phases while the hull and the structure are being envisaged and developed. I strongly believe in the need to overcome the traditional approach that entrusts the designers of the exterior with the realisation of the spaces, which are then delivered to the interior designer, who then finds themselves confronted with structures and limitations already in place. What projects are you currently working on? In terms of yachts, I am working right now on an 81 m MY and a 67 m MY that are under construction at the Turquoise Shipyard in Turkey. Aside from that I’m involved in the design of the clubhouse for a skyscraper being built in Hong Kong, together with Vitruvius Yachts, and a luxury sea-house in Tuscany with architect Massimo Gentileschi.

the interior of a yacht? Each project begins by looking for ways to bring together the many different elements that usually lie in front of us: Owners’ desires and tastes, structural features of the boat, and technological challenges. These considerations differ for every project but they all need pertinent solutions to achieve maximum impact. For me it is very important to study the flows, in order to create highly functional and efficient layouts that genuinely make the most of the potential quality of life to be had on board. All while respecting the different environments the vessel will pass through in its lifetime. 2
YACHTING ADVICE
New Builds & Refits Federico Bennewitz has a wealth of experience in yachting, acquired over the last 30 years. His expert knowledge ranges across almost every aspect of the industry. When it comes to new builds and refits, he is the go-to man for advice. NEW CONSTRUCTION: UNDERSTANDING YOUR PROFILE
BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY
When
When visions on the drawing board come to life, they quite often do not turn out as originally planned. Rather than waiting until the unveiling of the yacht to see how the ideas turn out in reality, creating mock-ups during the build is a genuinely effective way to see the results and make any necessary changes before it is too late. Even the smallest details such as lights, dimmers, electrical curtains and switches should be included in the mock-ups that fit your requirements.
deciding if a new construction is right for you it is essential to think about your previous yachting experience and have a solid understanding of your likes and dislikes. AN EXPERT TEAM IS KEY It is safe to say that one of the most important parts of the process is the people involved. Before approaching a shipyard you should recruit a team of experts and share your vision with them. The size of your team will depend on the size of the yacht and the complexity of the project. One key role will be your Project Manager who will ensure that everything runs smoothly and on schedule, and will liaise between all parties involved. We advise you to include them from the very outset – from before signing the contract through to delivery. An exterior and interior designer will also form part of the team. It is especially important that your interior designer has prior experience working on yachts.

SELECTING THE SHIPYARD Before you select a shipyard, briefing your team as to precisely what you want is very important as this will ensure your vision does not get swayed in any other direction during the process. Your team will be able to advise you whether the yard has the capabilities and required skills for your project and to ensure your vision is always kept at the forefront of all decisions made. They will also analyse the shipyard’s questions as those are a good indicator of their professionalism and they will review previous builds to determine which is the best choice for your particular project.
REFIT: STARTING WITH A DETAILED PLAN
Refits are often underestimated for the level of complexity involved. Before deciding whether you want to have your current yacht undergo a refit, you need to make a plan. The first thing to do is define the strategy for the yacht for the next five years in terms of use, charter, or even sale. A good idea is to have a surveyor come on board and assess the current condition of your yacht from a different point of view. The surveyor will help you to enhance your vision in terms of what requires work and will come up with estimations for a budget and timing. This information will be invaluable when deciding on your plan of action. FINDING THE RIGHT PARTNER
SETTING A REALISTIC TIMELINE A n estimated date for delivery is agreed
at the start. The Project Manager plays a key role in monitoring progress and ensuring the timeframe is sufficient to maintain the quality promised by the shipyard. Pressuring for a fast delivery is risky, as it detracts from the time required to achieve a high-quality finish.
Once you have an overview of the work that needs to be done you then need to find a suitable shipyard. The obvious choice is to go with the builder, however sometimes if you have an older yacht the shipyard may not be as well-equipped as it once was. Returning to the same shipyard is not necessarily the only option you have. It is best to investigate all your options for your specific project.

ALLOW FOR UNFORESEEN COSTS & EXPECT DELAYS
Even if you draw up plans and carry out assessments in great detail beforehand, you should always be prepared and allow time to navigate your way through unexpected situations.
