MAYBE NO KITCHEN AT ALL

WELCOME

Dear Reader, n Italian magazine recently asked me whether I could name an object I virtually never put down. The answer wasn’t difficult: my smartphone. Like most people, I don’t just use it to make and receive calls. I send emails, check the news or use an app to call a cab. My smartphone has become indispensible. Just like my laptop, which allows me to work when I am traveling on business. It is quite astonishing how modern technology has taken over our private and professional lives. This is also true in the world of real estate. These days, there is hardly a penthouse or modern residence that has not been fitted with a smart home system allowing you to easily, and remotely, control the heating, lights, blinds and other features via your smartphone or tablet computer. Smart home systems also link up individual devices and make living more sustainable. Energy efficiency is important for many of our clients. Architects around the globe are increasingly banking on sustainable construction methods and materials such as wood. The world’s tallest mass-timber high-rise is currently going up in Vancouver, Canada. A sustainable approach to real estate is all the more important in light of the growing global population, especially in large urban centers, where we face the challenge of satisfying the strong demand for properties without cutting back on convenience or modern amenities. Micro-apartments represent a possible solution. Here, private amenity space is scaled back to the essentials, while non-quotidian activities are transferred to communal areas. So, the trend towards the sharing economy is now making itself felt in real estate, and singles and commuters have increasingly been discovering micro-apartments. When designing micro-apartment buildings, the needs of future occupants must be taken into account, as they can be as discerning as the residents of regular apartments. But no matter how you intend to live in the near future, the properties on the following pages are sure to inspire you. Sincerely

WELCOME

Sustainable, please! After the past summer break, we - the GG team - found ourselves discussing a topic almost every one of us had experienced: picking up plastic waste from the beach. Eight million tons of it end up in our oceans every year, but what we see washed up as trash is just a tiny fraction. This is just one of the many interesting messages in the documentary A Plastic Ocean, which was produced by Jo Ruxton, who spent more than eight years making the mind-blowing film: “When we started filming, we had no idea how dangerous plastic waste really can be for human beings. I wasn’t a grandmother then. Today, I have four grandchildren and with each one of their births, I got more and more convinced how important it is to share what we have learned.” Inspired by A Plastic Ocean, we are presenting you with an entire issue on the topic of sustainability. We are introducing personalities like the incomparable John Mackey, the founder of the organic supermarket chain Whole Foods; Livia Firth, who is married to the British actor Colin Firth, and who created Eco-Age – a company that not only raises awareness of the consequences of our fast fashion industries but delivers solutions; and the Campana Brothers, two artists who create collectable art made from trash. We think sustainable living can be good for our planet, fun and attractive! We wish you a very interesting read! Yours,

SUE GIERS  Sue Giers hails from Hamburg and is an absolute style pro. Not long ago, she launched a blogzine called SoSue, along with an online shop. Topics naturally revolve around trends, favorite items of clothing, attitudes, feelings and exciting stories. But Sue also promotes fair fashion, and for our cover story about Tanya Streeter, she put together outfits that were produced sustainably (page 38).

Let’s go!

MARY GUTHRIE  New Yorker Mary Guthrie virtually grew up in the beauty business. Her mother is a hairstylist and makeup artist. As a child, Mary used to draw faces and finish them off with real makeup. For our Tanya Streeter shoot, the 34-year-old helped to create Tanya Streeter’s perfect cover-page look (page 38).

JOHANNES PAUL HÄUSSLER  For two years, Johannes Paul Häußler assisted photographer Mark Seelen with assignments worldwide. Here he is in the Caymans for our cover shoot. In January, the trained portrait photographer struck out on his own. In his free time, the 25-year-old loves to cook for himself and his friends.

Go-to man  MARK SEELEN

Mark Seelen is our photographer of choice when it comes to shooting GG cover stories. For this issue, he photographed Tanya Streeter, the record-breaking freediver, in the Cayman Islands. To prepare for the underwater shots, Mark practiced in a pool, but his ocean pics turned out to be just so much better!

PLAYGROUND INTERVIEW

Sartorial longevity Fast fashion is not something Tom Cridland believes in. The Briton measures the lifespan of the shirts and pants produced by his label Tom Cridland not in seasons, but in decades. He champions affordability and sustainability. You founded a fashion label whose products are designed to last for 30 years. Why have you made

In the fashion industry, sustainability is not a priority. You only have to watch the documentary The True Cost by Andrew Morgan to understand the horrible consequences of fast fashion. When I founded my company in 2014, all we did at first was produce trousers in different colors and made of different fabrics. I didn’t have the idea for the multidecade warranty until later on. The “30 Year Sweatshirt” was the first design. It is an attempt to make sustainability in fashion more attractive and to make consumers think about the clothing they buy. Clothes are not disposable items, they should be durable. Of course, we also want to prompt the industry to think again in order to conserve resources. I want us to become the leading label for sustainable fashion. sustainability your focus?

But what about fashion trends? What’s in today may be out again tomorrow – let alone several decades from now. Our T-shirts and sweatshirts are plain crew necks, quite understated, really. This classic look holds its own against any trend. We want to convince our customers to keep coming back to us. As a businessman, I can say that our collection is a great success. What type of garments do you offer? Sweatshirts, T-shirts, jackets, shirts and trousers.

Tom Cridland guarantees that articles of clothing made by his label last 30 years. Customers can send them in to be mended for free if required.

There isn’t a particular type – and we don’t like to categorize. But I certainly consider it a great honor that many stars from the film and music business like Leonardo DiCaprio, Hugh Grant, Daniel Craig, Brandon Flowers, Robbie Williams, Neil Young, Clint Eastwood and Kendrick Lamar all wear my fashion. Where is the clothing produced? In Parma, Italy, and in Serra da Estrela, Portugal. My mother is Portuguese, so I know the place – and am familiar with the quality of the products made there. Do you yourself always wear Tom Cridland? No, not really. I usually wear at least one item from my collection, but otherwise I like to mix and match.

“The ocean was always my element!” The silhouette of freediver Tanya Streeter looks like an elegant creature of the sea.

As the patron of the new documentary A Plastic Ocean, Tanya Streeter is raising awareness of the plastic waste in our oceans.

A PLASTIC

She is a modern mermaid who broke world records. Tanya Streeter was 29 years old when she took one deep breath and dived 160 meters into the waters off the Turks & Caicos Islands and came back up again without the help of any scuba apparatus. A true sensation in the maledominated extreme sport of freediving. Now her deep love for the sea is the inspiration for her latest project: saving our oceans from plastic pollution.

water like an elegant sea creature. Her skin-tight suit shimmers silvery and her feet are wedged in a monofin as she dives effortlessly past a humpback whale and its young calf. The unusual athlete has done some risky adventures for various BBC documentaries. She has had feisty reef sharks nibble her fins, freedived deep into Belizes’ daunting Blue Hole and spent a week in the African bush. Fear is a feeling Tanya Streeter does not seem to know – at least not when it comes to wild animals: “I’m much more concerned about plastic waste destroying our oceans!” More than 300 million tons of plastic are produced every year, half of it for single usage only. Eight million tons find their way into our oceans by way of rivers and streams. Once there, weather conditions, salt water and sun make it brittle and turn big pieces into dangerous microplastics that soak up toxins like miniscule sponges. Marine animals mistake this so-called plastic smog for plankton, eat it and as a result, the dangerous toxins ultimately make their way into our food chain. This is the core message of the new documentary A Plastic Ocean produced by British filmmaker Jo Ruxton over a period of more than eight years – for which Tanya Streeter is an on-camera lead, driven by her passionate support as patron of The Plastic Oceans Foundation. She can be seen in various scenes, like investigating the ocean floor with a marine biologist to determine the volume of plastic trash with the help of a robotic submarine. Some of the footage in the film is quite difficult to watch: seabirds facing an agonizing death because they cannot tell the difference between food and bits of plastic, a dead whale having large pieces of plastic sheeting cut out

of its stomach. “The sad reality is that although people will get upset seeing the animals die, many will only change their behavior if their own health is at stake. And it is!,” says Streeter, as we sit drinking tea in the kitchen of her home in Austin, Texas, where she lives with her husband and two children. The American-Brit-Caymanian was born and grew up in the Cayman Islands, where we meet again a few weeks later for our photo shoot. When you think about what you learned from A Plastic Ocean, what facts shocked you the most?  The

statistic that in the last 10 years we produced more plastic than in the fifty years before. That according to the Container Recycling Institute, 100.7 billion plastic bottles were sold in the U.S. in 2014, which is 315 per person. Or that there are places like Tuvalu, the Polynesian nation of reef islands and atolls, which until 1978 was a tropical paradise, but turned into a nightmare. It’s heartbreaking. Many of the imports arrive wrapped in plastic and there’s no way to get rid of it. A shocking portion of the main island is a giant (and growing) pile of trash, and people are dying of cancer

She’s not afraid of wild animals. Instead, Tanya Streeter is very concerned about their wellbeing. Here, she dives with manta rays.

When I came up again, I had done 30 meters, a sensation because none of the other participants had gone deeper than 20. That evening, Ferreras called and asked me to train with him to beat the American record – 50 meters. At first I didn’t want to and said: are you crazy? But he kept calling back and eventually I got addicted to the challenge and learned that the more I trained, the deeper I was able to dive.

yes, I did. Growing up in the Cayman Islands I cannot remember finding a plastic cup or straw on the beach. Later, as a teenager, when I saw some plastic on the seabed I would dive down and get it. I remember going scuba diving and cleaning up as much as I could. Living on an island set me up for looking at the world as a whole. How has working on the movie affected you or even changed your life?

Yes, you really have to want it badly, and the mental aspect of the sport is just as important as the physical. It’s like a voice in your head saying: go deeper, you can do it, keep trying to go deeper. The hard part is the work you have to do in the gym, the dive is the reward. At the gym, I was a machine, I did everything: cardio, aerobics, anaerobics. I remember doing 17 miles on the Stairmaster at level 10! I was super-super-super fit. After training at the gym for six days in a row, I found that on the seventh day I could dive just that little bit deeper.

BRAZIL’S DUO

DYNAMIC Fernando und Humberto Campana are outliers in contemporary design. F

ernando and Humberto Campana play according to their own rules.  For the last three

decades the brothers from São Paulo have been ignoring preconceived notions about how chairs, armchairs and cupboards are supposed to look. Their products are not slick or interchangeable. They are characterful creations that develop a life of their own and leave no one indifferent. Humberto Campana explains the brothers’ joint approach: “Our designs ask to be touched. These tactile qualities are also part of Brazilian culture in which craftsmanship always plays an important part.” The brothers were masters of upcycling long before the term became significant in a design context. They use industrial waste such as ropes, wires, small pieces of wood, leftover pieces of fabric and leather as a starting point, and turn these into imaginative objects at the interface of art and design. In some other creations they fall back on ready-made objects, for example when assembling an armchair made of large numbers of stuffed toys. The process of collecting, condensing and combining is a common thread that pervades the Campana brothers’ entire oeuvre. They still shun computers as design tools to this day. Instead, their work is based on making things by hand. “We start off with the materials, which we cut into pieces. We then paint, reorganize and finally reassemble them. At some point, you no longer see the original material, but recognize a living animal, plant or other structure that eludes our control. Our creations are beings you can have in your home, but which nevertheless have a certain savage quality to them,” says Fernando Campana. Their pieces of furniture charm with their primal, almost accidental appearance, which often conceals the sophisticated, non-industrial production processes involved.

S

ometimes it takes months for the two to learn a specific braiding technique  or

other tricky task that will allow them to execute their designs. Fernando and Humberto Campana incorporate their “manual skills” into the designs and production processes, and so remove their creations from the realm of the interchangeable and the easily imitated. However, surprises and setbacks can never be ruled out. The designing brothers once traveled to an ethnic German settlement in the south of Brazil that specializes in woodwork. They wanted their “Favela Chair” (1991), which they had designed for the Italian company Edra, produced in a particular way: made up of chaotically assembled small pieces of wood. “These people were used to making very streamlined furniture. So we conducted a workshop with them in order to teach them how to be more anarchic, more ‘favela’,” says Fernando. The first 100 chairs were produced in exactly this way. When the brothers placed a second order, however, the chairs suddenly started arriving with the little pieces off wood all orderly and at right angles to each other. “The people were so sad when we told them that their chairs were ugly. They said: ‘We tried to do our best.’ We responded: ‘Do your worst, be irrational.’ We wanted to drive out their orderly im- Humberto (left) and Fernando Campana founded their studio in São Paulo in 1983, and have been shaking up the pulse,” explains Fernando, summarizing design scene with their upcycled objects ever since. the cross-cultural venture. The fact that the Campana brothers have a unique view of design is partially rooted in their background. When they founded their studio in São Paulo in 1983, Humberto (the older of the brothers, born in 1953) was already a law graduate, while his brother Fernando, eight years his junior, had just completed an architecture degree. The dissimilar duo soon caused a stir in São

Paulo’s creative scene. The Brazilian city is one that they have a “love-hate relationship” with to this day. Fernando explains what he means as follows: “São Paulo is a metropolis that does not treat you like a human being at all – more like an animal. New York and Mexico City do the same. You are forced to use your imagination to discover beauty in places where it does not exist.” The brothers grew up in a completely non-urban environment: on a rather remote farm, 150 kilometers north of São Paulo – a place surrounded by spectacular waterfalls and exotic plants and animals. orking together as siblings is something the Campanas see as an advantage: “When you are blood relatives, you can’t just tell each other: ‘I don’t want to see you anymore!’ You can say this to a regular business partner, though, and actually mean it. I can’t imagine never seeing my brother again, so we have to stick together,” says Fernando. Humberto agrees: “Of course we have big arguments from time to time, because we can tell each other anything. But it is also good for our work, because we can be very critical of one another. There is no flattery and we don’t pull our punches. We get straight to the point.” The Campana brothers have been trailblazers several times – and have been celebrated for this with exhibitions in New York’s MoMA, London’s Victoria & Albert Museum and at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein in Germany. “In the 1990s, minimalism was the trend du jour in terms of design. Our work, on the other hand, was full of textures, with ornate and sensual elements. But, we didn’t give up, and stuck to our path,” says Humberto – who is the slightly more reserved of the two. Today’s return to artistic craftsmanship is something that they also anticipated early on – just like trialing limited editions as a creative playground for design ideas. While the early Campana creations were exclusively sold as gallery editions, in the 1990s the brothers also started collaborating with manufacturers like Alessi, Edra, Bernardaud, Baccarat, Lasvit and Louis Vuitton. But their designs never became arbitrary or conventional. Quite the contrary: “Cabana” (2010), for example, is a cupboard without doors, produced by Edra. In this piece of furniture, long strings of raffia fiber hang down and connect to the floor from the top of a freestanding column. They form a complete cover for the five levels of shelving. In order to retrieve stored items, you only need to reach through the “hairy” outer layer, which – in look and feel – subverts all the conventions of furniture making. The brothers also chose an unusual mix of materials for their “Pirarucu” series of cabinets (2013, Galerie Carpenters Workshop). The limited-edition wooden furniture series comprises only eight units, which are totally covered with the tanned skins of the freshwater fish bearing the same name. Their “Aster Papposus” sofa with its 16 velvety arms is reminiscent of a giant starfish or octopus, while the low, upholstered “Kaiman Jakarè” piece puts observers in mind of an intertwined group of crocodiles (both produced by Edra in 2006). The Brazilian brothers recently caused a stir with their costumes for the dance show Virtually There, which premiered last November at the Mana Contemporary art center in New Jersey. The garments for the new production of Oscar Schlemmer’s Triadic Ballet (1922) were made of holographic surfaces, with woven-in LEDs and inflatable fabrics, which made their appearance change depending on the angle at which the light hit them, or made them emit light themselves. These costumes were just as unusual as anything else created by the Campana Brothers, whose designs ask to be conquered, climbed on, or simply touched. They appeal to our playful instinct, promote interaction and prove time and again that exciting design solutions are developed mainly when going off the beaten track.

The models smile and dance their way through the fashion show finale like high-spirited children. According to American Vogue’s online headline, it was “the feel-good moment of Paris Fashion Week.” McCartney’s message: ethical fashion, often decried as boring and square, can in fact be glamorous and fun. “I grew up as a vegetarian on an organic farm in England. So somehow it was only natural not to use leather or fur for my products,” explains the daughter of ex-Beatle Paul McCartney, whose late mother Linda was a dedicated animal welfare supporter. The British designer has made a fine art out of the perfect cut and works with the kind of expensive, upmarket materials that are the norm in the world of luxury fashion. But as early as 2001, the year she presented her first prêt-a-porter collection in Paris, Stella McCartney demonstrated that for her, aesthetics and business are unthinkable unless there’s an ethical aspect as well. Over the years, she became a pioneer of sustainable fashion. In 2009 – because “we’re never perfect enough,” as she self-critically puts it – McCartney became the first designer in the luxury segment to join the international New York City-based advocacy group Natural Resources Defense Council. In line with its statutes, she has

made her production chain transparent, reduced her company’s carbon footprint – and with it the production costs – by committing to use 25 percent less water and 35 percent less energy in the manufacturing process. She is also always on the lookout for new, biodegradable materials from which to produce her accessories.

GG PROMOTION

The warm face of cool Carma throws are made of premium faux fur and so like the real thing you’d never guess they’re manmade.

P

olar bear, puma, lynx or opossum –

all these animals have been hunted for their soft and beautifully marked fur for centuries. But Carma, a label from Bielefeld, Germany, doesn’t harm a single hair on an animal’s head to make its soft and cuddly throws: all its blankets are made of luxury faux fur. The upmarket artificial fur products are produced at a weaving mill in France and lined with a supersoft and breathable blend of wool and cashmere in Bielefeld. Customers can choose from 45 varieties of fur and two different blanket versions: fringed or with mitered corners. Ralf and Ruth Bartelsheim, who founded their company in 1990, launch two collections a year – one for spring and summer, the other for autumn and winter. When architects or interior designers approach them with special requests for furnishing hotels or yachts, the Bartelsheims are more than happy to provide the extremely natural-looking imitation furs and hides in customized colors. Besides throws, the company now makes useful accessories like the Travel Pillow out of its exquisite materials as well. It too is covered with soft, cuddly faux fur and doubles as a muff that you can conveniently slip your hands and arms into. And when the lucky owner boards an airplane, he or she has a luxuriously soft cushion on which to rest their head.

1 Carma’s faux fur throws are the epitome of snug and cozy luxury. The combination of quality, design and workmanship results in unique products. The hardwearing throws owe their durability to an inspired blend of synthetic fibers and cashmere. Their cozy texture and soft look and feel is dominated by the high cashmere content 1 The velvety soft “Puma Pastell” throw 2 The white-and-gray “Husky” model is strikingly realistic 3 The current collection includes rugs in three colors 4 The latest designs from the Carma label are a combination of faux fur and knitwork.

Flexible! Natascha Harra-Frischkorn’s shelf “Chuck” bends according to the weight of the books stored on it. Neuvonfrisch, from € 719.

Burtynsky’s large-format photographs appear to be almost surreal. They are beautiful and menacing at the same time. If you let your eyes linger on his subjects for longer, you begin to realize what they are: pipelines, levees, shipwrecks and freeways. Objects that have been cleaved into the natural world. Burtynsky is a photographer who unflinchingly documents just how globalization ravages our natural environment.

Sushi – The Global Catch Mark Hall, documentary, 75 minutes, approx. € 10

Sushi is high-end fast food, a democratic delicacy – maki for everyone. This documentary showcases the tough business behind the industry and highlights facts that may spoil the enjoyment of your tuna sashimi. Experts, buyers and chefs all have a chance to have their say. As do those who predict that the fish stocks in the world’s oceans will be depleted within 35 years due to global demand – and that these ecosystems will never recover. Watch and learn.

the term “design.” The pioneering Bavarian eco-house company Baufritz wants to bring about a change in this image: “There is nothing lighter, more efficient, more renewable or load-bearing than timber,” says managing director Dagmar Fritz-Kramer. “To date, we human beings have not yet been able to invent a similar material that is renewable, captures carbon dioxide while it is growing and so protects the climate. But the forms have to fit in with our vision of the future.” Alfredo Häberli has now produced a design that conveys entirely new aesthetics and presents a feasible vision. The Argentine-born Swiss designer was inspired by the shipbuilding industry, where wood has been used as the building material of choice since time immemorial. He designed the “Haussicht” panoramic house from the inside out. Because of this, the architectural structures become furniture, and the furniture can be turned into rooms. He even discarded some received architectural wisdom: the bedrooms are located at ground level, where specially developed walls even block electrosmog, while the living rooms are on the upper floor. There, you feel like you are on a cruise ship. Large windows allow in a lot of light, which can be regulated by aluminum sliding panels. The decking, which skirts the house, boasts stunning views. “I have looked at many issues, for example accessibility and the adaptability of spaces,” says the 52-yearold. “This is an ensemble of buildings that showcases the multifaceted nature of future living.”
