GGAT Projects were commissioned by Hammerson plc. to undertake a scheme of archaeological excavation and monitoring prior to and during the redevelopment of land forming an extension to the Merthyr Retail park, Merthyr Tydfil. This land was formerly occupied by the coking works for the Cyfarthfa ironworks and latterly by the Thorn Lighting Works and the archaeological work was undertaken in order to safeguard against the loss of the archaeological resource associated with these sites.
Four major phases of activity were noted within the remains recorded on the site. These ranged in date from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century.
