Boat transactions usually involve large financial investments. Transactions today usually exceed $100,000, and in some instances can exceed $3,000,000. If you had a $100,000 income tax problem, would you attempt to handle it without the help of an Accountant? If you had a $100,000 legal question, would you deal with it without the help of a Lawyer? Considering the small upside cost and the large downside risk, it would be foolish to consider a deal in yacht brokerage without the professional assistance of a qualified Marine Broker. But if you are still not convinced of the value of a Marine Broker, here are a dozen or so more reasons to use one.

WHEN BUYING A BOAT

Professional Marine Brokers have resources available to them that most boat buyers do not have. In particular their access to sophisticated and reliable multiple listing services can save time in narrowing the field of yachts that meet a buyer’s requirements. Wingfoil – the newest,best cruising toy to have on your boat Whilst summer cruising did you notice the proliferation of people wingfoiling from their boat? The wingfoil is the latest accessory to have on a cruising boat. Takes up minimal space, quick and easy to get going, and most importantly a heap of fun. One of the best ways to experience the pure joy of hydrofoiing. Wingfoiling the newest and fastest growing watersport globally. A wing is like a sail you hold in your hand to catch the wind to propel you forward. It is simple, compact, efficient, affordable and very exciting. The hand wings are light and powerful. Match this with the efficiency of a foil board and you can be blasting, elevated, across the water. Why is a wingfoil great on a cruising boat? Not much gear is needed and it is compact. A deflated hand wing is the size of a small backpack. Plus, many boats have a stand up paddleboard (SUP) lying on their deck already. Whilst the SUP is not a foil board, a regular SUP is a great place to start to learn how to handle the wing. A wingfoil board is also known as a SUP foilboard, which is specifically designed for foiling. Inflatable wingfoil boards are available, which have many advantages on a boat, albeit a compromise in performance. You can anchor your boat in a calm bay (not out in the breeze) and prone (lying down) paddle the board from your anchorage out to the wind line, dragging the wing

behind you. You have two leashes, one on the hand wing and the other on the board. You start on your knees, hold the wing up to catch the breeze, the resulting power assists you to your feet, then you pump the board up onto the foil and you are away. You may be aware of kitefoiling, windsurf foiling, sup foiling, surf foiling, tow foiling – now there is wingfoiling. Any previous foiling experience obviously helps if you are learning to wingfoil. But, it is possible to learn to wingfoil as a total foiling newbie. The best wingfoil school is at Lake Pupuke on Auckland’s North Shore (just Google “madloop”). If you have access to a sup foil board, then being towed behind a boat at low speed is a great way to learn to foil. If you doubt that wingfoiling is a “real thing” and think it’s some fad invented by the surf industry to sell more kit, you are quite simply wrong. All of NZ’s top watermen are into it bigtime. You can enjoy wingfoiling cruising around as a punter, or take it to the limit foiling in surf and big ocean swells. There are three parts to the gear – the hand wing, board and foil rig. The hand wing comes in a range of sizes, the most common starting size being 4m or 5m. They have an inflatable leading edge (like most kitesurfing kites) and a single strut for rigidity with grab handles. There are many global brands now selling in NZ, most are good, so it comes down to personal preference. Retail price ranges from $1,200 to $1,600 for each size wing.

It is challenging enough learning to foil so you do not want to hinder your progress with a board that is too wobbly. Don’t buy a smaller board thinking that you will grow into it. Buy a bigger volume board to get you over the learning curve asap. Sell your bigboard to go smaller once you have wingfoiling mastered and have outgrown your first board. A foil board costs around $2,000. Remember that with a SUP paddle you can take your foil board in the surf and go “sup surf foiling”. This is lots of fun and will build your skill level for wingfoiling, plus, it is something to do when there is no wind. When you get going on your wingfoil you will have a “good side” and a “bad side”. This is normal and comes back to your “surf stance”, whether you are a “goofy foot” or “regular”. Once you get hooked, two wing sizes in your quiver will be essential. If you want to start with one wing, choose the bigger size for your body weight. When you are learning power is your friend. You cannot learn to wingfoil when you are underpowered. The foil rig is a magnificent piece of design and engineering. Its sole function is to create lift (like an aeroplane wing) as it moves through the water. The parts of the foil rig are the large front wing, small rear wing, both wings attach to a fuselage, which attaches to a mast (lengths can be changed), then to a mast base plate, which attaches the foil rig to the board. The bigger the front wing, the more lift and stability it will provide. If the wind is too strong and your hand wing too big, a big front wing under the board can create too much lift, getting overpowered and popping you out of the water, resulting in a crash. Discussions on wing design and size can last a long time at the beach. A foil rig costs around $2,000.

Initially you turn your wingfoil by gybing (turning with the wind, as opposed to tacking, which is turning into the wind). When you are learning to foil a helmet and impact vest are recommended for safety, due to the injury risk of falling from height, potentially onto hard and sharp parts. However, you can start simply by getting used to the hand wing on a non-foiling SUP accepting that you will end up downwind. Once you master foiling and experience the thrill and efficiency of flight you will never use the sailing dinghy ever again.

Your board needs to have the correct system to attach your foil rig to the bottom. Apart from this, the most important aspect for a board is that it is the right size for your weight and ability. The board needs to be the right volume (for Page 77
