SELF TAUGHT VS PROFESSIONAL

POOR MAKE UP APPLICATIONS CAN DESTROY A PHOTOGRAPHERS SET INSPIRED BY ARJIA THOMAS WRITTEN BY KING DAVIS

H

ow many times have you seen a photo and asked yourself “who did her make up?” Probably more times than you actually complimenting someone on how well their make up actually looks. As both a positive and a negative, there are definitely a surplus of make up artist now due to the modeling industry being so widely open to just any and everybody. So who should you go with when booking a make up artist for your photo shoot, self-taught versus professional? While it may sound like a no brainier, some models and even photographers don’t know how important the difference is when it pertains to the outcome of the model’s look. When interviewing New Orleans Professional Make Up Artist Arjia Thomas, she stated “there is more to make up than just applying the application, one must know about skin care, sanitary procedures, and undertones”. After watching Ms. Thomas for sometime now work on sets with various clients, I will say that I truly understand how much time and skill set goes into creating such a beautiful face, one that is ultimately is deemed as art. Some think that any person that does make up is qualified but thats not true at all - there is a BIG difference, and I have seen a lot of photo shoots in my time ruined by the model having their make up not done properly. There are many people on social media today that have “free lance” or “self taught” in their bio. Most MUA’s are freelance if they don’t work solely in a shop or brick and mortar business of their own. Although “free-lance” is typical to hear, “self-taught” is a red flag, one that is overlooked by many models and other types of clients. There is nothing wrong with being self taught, especially because most MUA’s started out playing around with cosmetics on their own. The problem comes into play when those amateur MUA’s do not take the necessary steps to become a professional in their field. After doing my own research and speaking with the professional make

up artist Ms. Thomas, I gained a lot of insight into what a professional make up artist needs to know. A make up artist should seek proper and professional training. Self taught is definitely the wrong verbiage to use because if your self taught, you most likely haven’t been trained the correct way. This applies less to the artistry but more to foundational science such as sanitation, undertones, time management, and much more. Being able to do make up is art and therefor it’s considered a talent because one must have an eye for it. Even though one may have a talent for it - it’s still important to get the proper training. As a professional it’s important for the artist to sit the client down and ask their skin type of whether it’s oily, dry or etc. A professional make up artist (PMUA), would be able to look at a potential client and know their skin type by just looking closely after cleansing their skin. Cleaning utensils is vitally important and many self-taught mua’s don’t realize that it’s important to re-clean utensils in front of each client. For example, “do not double dip” - meaning please use disposables because one should know that the first rule to being a professional makeup artist is being sanitary in front of each client. This is just a small synopsis on the difference between a self taught makeup artist to a professional makeup artist. Some self-taught make up artists may not be able to educate themselves with the proper training procedures due to lack of time or even finances. A great alternative is taking up an apprenticeship under a professional because entering the beauty industry on your own. This training is vital when your subjecting yourself to other peoples skin and health. It’s important to realize that the face is a vital part of a woman’s body but also self-esteem, so take pride in making sure that each client receives not just the proper services but also the proper skin care. www.thevisionaryking www.the9firm.com iamthekingdavis on Twitter Thevisionaryking on Instagram

nnamarta creates dreamlike sculptural fashion inspired by cultural remnants of ancient times when the sacred was celebrated; and by Armenian carpet symbology in line with her heritage. The delicate media of knit and crocheted metal wire with vintage glass beads takes many hours of work and allows expression of her sense of subtle realms of light and space; the places between life and death. Also of great interested is how people display works of art and the idea of sculpture that can also be worn so it is multi-functional, as garments, costume, sculpture, and holding spiritual power.

Annamarta Dostourian received her BA from Clark University and attended San Francisco Art Institute. She has exhibited at 5 Claude Lane Gallery, Mina Dresden Gallery, Berkeley Art Center (Berkeley), Studio Quercus (Oakland), and as part of the California Finale Juried Exhibition through RUSH Philanthropic Arts Foundation in collaboration with 5 Claude Lane Gallery and Bombay Sapphire. Her work has been worn on runways at Hot Couture at The Crucible in Oakland (‘fiery fusion of fashion design and industrial art’) and at the Port Moody Art Center, BC, Canada, Wearable Art Awards.
