Education Committee Report PAT BUSH & BILL TILLMAN - CO CHAIRS
The Adel-Cook Chamber Education Committee’s top initiatives each year are focused on lowering the illiteracy rate, improving high school graduation rate, providing a variety of post-secondary educational opportunities to high school graduates, and preparing young people with valuable skills to enter the workforce. The Chamber Education Committee sponsored or co-sponsored the following initiatives in 2018: Once again, BASF Corporation and the Adel-Cook Chamber co-sponsored the STAR Student and STAR Teacher recognition program for Cook County. 2018 offered a unique situation as there was a tie for this honor. The STAR Student’s for 2018 were Payal Patel, who named Dorothy Reynolds as her STAR Teacher, and NelSilva Wolf who named Becky Futch as her STAR Teacher. The STAR Student and STAR Teacher, their family members, and representatives from the School System, Chamber, and BASF attended the annual Regional STAR Banquet held in Valdosta, GA in March. The “College Education Matters” initiative was once again a very successful opportunity for area high school students. Working with funds provided by Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, Cook High School juniors toured
6
the Cook County Workforce Development Center and attended information sessions covering topics such as Personal Finances, Hiring Expectations from Employers, Enrollment and Hiring Information from Wiregrass, and Community Service-Giving Back. Many thanks to Jeff Taylor from Citizens Bank, Cardinal CT, and the Wiregrass Cook Staff for facilitating the sessions! The Cook High School Juniors also traveled to the Valdosta Wiregrass Campus and attended the annual “Geekfest” event that features all the Wiregrass business and computer technology programs of study. The students learned about low cost technical college training and financial aid options as well as other assistance to help them obtain an affordable college education and skills for an entry level job. The Education Committee awarded its annual college scholarship to two deserving 2018 Cook High School graduates, Hadden Fulgham and Sennie Turner. A scholarship to attend Wiregrass Georgia Technical College was awarded. Chamber Scholarships are awarded through the Cook County Scholarship Foundation and Wiregrass Foundation South. School System were honored at the annual “Back to School Breakfast” held at Cook Middle School. The breakfast event was held on the first day for teachers and staff to report back in August. The Chamber and Cook Medical Center co-sponsored the event. The Retired Teachers of Cook County were also honored by the Chamber at a luncheon held in October. Cook Medical Center additionally co-sponsored this event along with the Chamber as part of their continuing support of

educators and the community. Throughout the 2018 school year, the Adel-Cook Chamber provided scooters to Cook Primary School students who were lucky contest winners in the school’s Bee Hive Bash program. The Chamber is very grateful to all our area educators, as well as business and community leaders who served on and assisted with the work of the Education Committee throughout the 2018 year!
Small Business Development CHRIS GRIFFIN - CHAIR
Small Business Development continued its services to the business community in 2018 with an ongoing LUNCH and LEARN series of business seminars. Lunch and Learn is the reason why I desired to be a part of the Small Business Development. I attended a Lunch and Learn in October 2015. From that luncheon, I started a business that is doing very well today. That it gave me the desire to be more active in our Chamber and try to give back as much as I can. If you have not attended a Lunch and Learn get together, I invite you to do so. We cover many topics throughout the year. If you know of any topics you would like to hear about, please notify myself or the Chamber and let us know. We would love to hear what you have in mind and put it in place. There were close to 20 Ribbon Cuttings and Ground Breakings in 2018, some of them were new businesses building from the ground up and some from having their businesses newly renovated and restored. In March of 2016, the Chamber started its first-ever Showcase Cook Business Expo at the
Delle Beamguard Social Hall. In September of 2017, the Chamber held its 2nd Annual Showcase Cook Business Expo at the AdelCook County Airport. In September 2018, the Chamber held its 3rd Annual Showcase Business Expo at the Adel Church of God. Over 20 business exhibitors from throughout Cook County and beyond displayed their products and services. The public was invited to the event and feedback from attendees and exhibitors were very positive. We also gave numerous door prices away thanks to our sponsors. We strive to mvake each year better than the last year. Plans for the 2019 Showcase Cook Business Expo are underway. The Chamber hosted quarterly Business After Hours events providing networking opportunities for more than 250 attendees overall. The 2018 sponsors were Laser Life & Laser Life Outdoors, South Georgia Motor Sports Park, Suncrest Home Health, and Tift Regional Medical Center. The Committee also spotlights one business each week as a STAR Business of the Week. This is a random drawing including all active Chamber members.

The Small Business Development Committee uses this format to thank our business members and help promote that company in the Adel News Tribune, Facebook, and the Chamber website. From those honorees, the Small Business of the Quarter was selected. Sister’s Florist & Bakery, El Carrisal Mexican Restaurant, Evergreen Produce, and Bessie Jane Design were each recognized for this honor in 2018. From these four businesses, Evergreen Produce was selected as the 2018 Small Business of the Year and recognized at the Annual Chamber Banquet held

in January 2019. I am honored to be named Chair for the Small Business Development again for 2019. As 2017 was my first year on the board with the Chamber, it was also my first year as Chair. I have had several of the board members teach and guide me, but I want to take this time to thank a few people who helped me to reach our goals for 2018. They are the past Chair of S.B.D. Mrs. Shonna O’Quinn, Ret. Col. Mr. Ron Mitchell, 2018 Chairwoman Mrs. Sharon Harnage and our President of the Chamber Mrs. Heather Green. My committee consisted of Ret. Col. Mr. Ron Mitchell and Mrs. Michelle Meadows. Without these individuals by my side, we would not have accomplished our goals for 2018. We already have a lot planned out for 2019. It was a pleasure to work under past Chairwoman Mrs. Harnage in 2018 as she guided us to give more back to our members. As I write this, I look forward to another year in 2019 under Chairwoman Pat Bush.

Membership Development HOLLY SOUTHERLAND - CHAIR
2018 was a busy year in Adel and Cook County. We welcomed new businesses, new members, new board members, and exciting new events. The Chamber has been doing some great things, and we know this because people and businesses are coming to us to join and get involved. At the end of 2018, the Chamber had a total of 245 members consisting of business members,
nonprofit organizations, individuals, and civic organizations. In 2018, we welcomed 23 new members. We are thankful for the new members and the loyal returning members. The Chamber Ambassador group is a hard-working volunteer committee which is the backbone of the many Chamber events including Ribbon Cuttings, Business After Hours, Adel Daylily Festival, Christmas in Cook,
and the Annual Banquet. Many hours go into the planning and execution of these events and would not be successful without a team of volunteers to call on. We started member “Pop-Ins” in 2018, where a group of Ambassadors and Board members show up at businesses with a big bag of popcorn and candy. We want you to know we appreciate our members and offer help in any way. You never know when we may “Pop In” to see you! Please visit our Membership Directory posted on the Chamber website at: www.adelcookchamber.org/membership-directory. Over 200 product and service categories are listed for your convenience in finding local suppliers of the products you purchase every day. The Adel-Cook County Chamber of Commerce belongs to its

members. Our members and their connections to our community are what make our Chamber one of the most active, forward-thinking organizations in our region. Thank you for your continued support of the AdelCook Chamber.
Chairwoman Letter Serving as the 2018 Chairwoman of the Adel-Cook Chamber was truly an honor. I enjoyed every minute of the adventure. 2018 was full of surprises and new adventures: my first time as Chair, and our amazing New President Heather. I only say new because she was new to our Chamber, but she proved she is definatly not new to the Chamber world. I remember her words when we interviewed her, she said, “I bleed chamber.” She made my year as Chairwoman enjoyable. Thank you to our amazing Board of Directors for working tirelessly to assure we had a fantastic year. Our Board goes above and beyond to provide great events for our community, and 2018 was

no different. They are always behind the scenes working. For a volunteer position, they could not have worked any harder had it been a paid position. My one goal for 2018 was to make the Chamber so appealing that new members would want to be a part of our great organization. We worked hard in the community and they noticed. We had many new members approach us to become a part. That was refreshing. I would also like to thank the County Commissioners and the City of Adel for their continued support of our Chamber. I would be remiss if I did not thank our wonderful Corporate Sponsors as well. They are our first base for all of our events.

They are the anchor that we build on every year. Thank you, the members of our Chamber for being the absolute best part of the Chamber of Commerce.
When you attend the Adel Lily Festival, Christmas in Cook or any of the other events, remember it is all because of you. We could not do what we do without your membership. So, Thank You!!! Being involved in the Chamber has been most rewarding to me. I have met so many wonderful people. Long before I was chairwoman, I served on the board. I do love and believe in our Chamber of Commerce. I love seeing businesses thrive, and being a small part of that, to assist small businesses is truly rewarding. It was a wonderful year. Thank you Sharon Harnage

Community Development Committee
The Community Development Committee for the Adel-Cook Chamber of Commerce works to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Cook County through the different events we orchestrate. This committee’s goal is to promote the local businesses and provide quality entertainment for our community. Each year the Adel-Cook County Chamber holds the annual banquet at Cook Middle School. Each year the preparations for this banquet are organized by this committee with assistance from other standing Chamber committees. Local businesses and individuals are recognized during this banquet for their outstanding achievements during the year. The 3rd weekend of May brings the Adel Daylily Festival to Cook County. This event brings approximately 6,000 to 7,000 people into our community for the weekend activities. The festival kicks off on Friday

night with music and a chance to dance and fellowship with friends. Bright and early Saturday morning sees the runners participating in the 5k then the activities move on to the free kid zone, arts and crafts, varied entertainment and the many food vendors located in the city parking lot and along Burwell Avenue. Several new events were added to the festival including
the popular pet contest that took place center stage during lunch. Looking forward to the Christmas celebrations, plans were made to begin the celebration of Cook County’s 100 years with this year’s Christmas parade theme. Our county commissioners, city council members from Adel, Sparks, Lenox and Cecil, Chamber Board of Directors along with other elected officials were invited to ride together in the Red Barns trolley as the Grand Marshal for the event. The Snowfest day joined forces with several other community groups to make the day a day to remember. Due to inclimate weather, these events took place on separate days. This year, our Christmas celebrations were well attended by the community. The City of Adel, Sheriff’s department, Adel Police, Adel Ice, local volunteer fire departments, ambulance service, local businesses and the many individual volunteers come together each

year to bring these events to Cook County. This year we added the Festival of Trees on Burwell Avenue. These trees were sponsored by local businesses and decorated to promote their businesses. They enhanced the Christmas decorations and added to the festivities. Each year the Christmas band ensemble along with the Choral Choir visits the nursing home, retirement homes and Cook Service Center bringing Christmas cheer through their music. The Chamber provides these students and their teachers with lunch during the day. Several other community events including the Karen Waldrup concert are in the planning stages for 2019. I look forward to seeing what this committee does during this next year for our community. It has indeed been my pleasure to serve as chairman of this committee for 2018.

President’s Letter HEATHER GREEN
I am thrilled to serve as the new President of the Adel Cook County Chamber of Commerce. 2018 was a whirlwind of transition for our organization and I am excited about what the future holds for the Chamber, our members, and for Cook County. As many of you know, the Chamber plays an important role in the success of a community. Adel & Cook County is experiencing a tremendous amount of growth and with that comes new opportunities for our citizens. The highly anticipated opening of the new hospital in 2019 is something that will have an economic impact on future generations for many years to come. The recreation department’s plans for expansion will bring sporting events from around the state to Adel & Cook County. Our community has the
chance to showcase our best assets to visitors from all over the country and the Chamber is here to help make that happen. In 2018, the Chamber welcomed 23 new members, celebrated 15 ribbon cuttings, held four Business After Hours, three lunch & learns, and two ground breakings. These are all in addition to the numerous special events hosted by our Committees including the Annual Daylily Festival, Showcase Cook Business Expo, and Christmas in Cook. So to say that your Chamber is busy is an understatement. The countless hours that our Board of Directors and volunteers contribute every month is a testament to the commitment they have to helping their hometown reach milestones. The Chamber could not flourish without their support
Heather Green
and the support of our members, and I thank you. In addition to the numerous volunteers that help us throughout the year, the City of Adel and Cook County also offer many resources, time, workers, and funding to aid in the
many activities sponsored by the Chamber over the course of the year. Both entities support the Chamber in every way possible making the Chamber’s annual program of work obtainable and successful. As we embark on 2019 and celebrate the 100th birthday of Cook County, remember where we came from and most importantly where we are going. I want to encourage each of you to get involved, ask questions, and grow with us. Moving forward, the Chamber’s Board of Directors and I are coming together, making plans, and setting goals to help our community and this organization flourish. Adel and Cook County is a great place to live, work, and raise a family!! Sincerely, Heather Green, President
