Էտվին Մինասեանը ծնած եւ հասակ առած է Պոլսոյ մէջ: Յաճախելէ յետոյ Սուրբ Գէորգ Աւստրիական վարժարանը, ան գաղթած է Ամերիկայի Միացեալ Նահանգներ 17 տարեկանին: Վերջերս ան ստացաւ Գիտական Աստիճանի իր ուսումը Ելեւմտական եւ Առուտուրի Գործարքի Կառավարման մարզին մէջ, Հարաւային Գալիֆորնիայի Համալսարանէն 1987ին եւ Իրաւաբանութեան ԴՈԿՏՈՐԻ ԱՍՏԻՃԱՆ Լոյոլա Իրաւաբանական Դպրոցէն 1990ին եւ նոյն տարին ընդունուեցաւ Գալիֆորնիա նահանգի Իրաւաբաններու Կաճառը:

EDVIN MINASSIAN, ESQ., IS AWARDED WITH “NERSES SHNORHALI” MEDAL
On Sunday, August 28th, 2016 OA Board of Trustees Chairman Edvin Minassian, Esq., received the Nerses Shnorhali medal for service to our faith and Nation. Mr. Minassian has been working diligently, relentlessly, to advance a mission for the benefit of the Organization of Istanbul Armenians and Armenian community as well, playing a key role in the many landmark achievements of the organization. The “St. Nerses Shnorhali” medal was conferred on Edvin Minassian, Esq., from His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, and presented to him by Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese, following the Divine Liturgy at St. Leon Armenian Cathedral, in Burbank, California. The event was attended by members and friends of OIA; OIA Executive Committee President Raffi Marukian and committee members, OIA Cultural Committee Chairman Dr. Ohannes
Kulak Avedikyan and his committee members, Joseph Kanimian , Chairman of the Diocesan Council ( not St Leon Cathedral ) and former Chair of Ararat Home, Avedik Izmirlian, CoChairman of ARF Western USA, Dr. Raffi Balian Chairman of ADLP, Western USA ( Ramgavar Party), Nora Hovsepian, Esq, Chairman ANCA Western USA Garo Ghazarian, Esq, Co-Chair of the Armenian Rights Watch Committee and former Chairman of Armenian Bar Association, Dr. Harout Yaghsezian , former Chair , AGBU Asbeds. The award presentation was complemented by a celebratory luncheon which took place later at the Western Diocese’s Armen Hampar hall. Archbishop Derderian, expressed his appreciation and congratulations to the awardee. Mr. Minassian stated that if it was another event I would have easily spoken my words, but when it is about myself it is hard to express. He thanked His Holliness Karekian the IInd, , His Eminence Archbp. Hovnan Derderian and former Primate Archbp. Vatche Hovsepian and all those who

Edvin Minassian, Esq., was born and raised in Istanbul. After attending the Sankt Georg Austrian School, he emigrated to the United States at the age of 17. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in the field of Finance and Business Administration from the University of Southern California in 1987 and a Juris Doctor Degree from Loyola Law School in 1990 and was admitted to the State Bar of California the same year. Mr. Minassian is certified as a specialist by the State Bar of California in the field of Workers’ Compensation. He is also admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States of America. He was selected by a peer based vote as a California Super Lawyer by Los Angeles Magazine in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Mr. Minassian is currently the Chair of the Legal Committee and serves as Legal Counsel to the Western Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church of North America. He also serves as the
Chief Liaison to the Jewish Community including the American Jewish Committee (AJC) as devout member of the church. Over the years he has served on Numerous AD HOC committees including government relations, protocol, friends of the Primate. As a key member of the Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee. Mr. Minassian was one of the main organizers of the historic 160.000 March on April 24, 2015 in Los Angeles. He has been serving as the Chairman of the Board of trustees of the Organization of Istanbul Armenians since 2010 and is a Trustee of the Ararat Home of Los Angeles. A member of the Executive Board of the Armenian Bar Association and holds the title of covice chair, previously he served as the two term Chairman of the Bar Association. (2010-2012). An occasional Columnist for Agos, Hrant Dink’s newspaper, writing mainly in the area of the United States foreign policy but including a variety of topics of interest to Armenians and nonArmenians alike. Mr. Minassian resides in Westwood, California.

The conference, entitled “GEOPOLITICS AND MINORITIES: THE CASE OF TURKEY” will be held at the Fletcher Jones Auditorium on the campus of Woodbury University, located at 7500 N. Glenoaks Blvd., Burbank, CA. Guest panelists included Khatchig Mouradian, Ph.D., Visiting Professor of Armenian Studies at California State University, Fresno; Asli Bali, Ph.D., Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Near Eastern Studies at UCLA; and Edvin Minassian, Esq., Board Member and former President of the Armenian Bar Association.
From September 24 to 26, Garo Paylan, founding member of the People’s Democratic Party (HDP) and member of the Turkish Parliament, visited the Southern California Armenian community and participated in several events, which included an academic conference, a community dinner and a town hall meeting hosted by Asbarez. Paylan represents the 3rd district of Istanbul and is active within the Armenian community there. He has been a strong advocate for minority rights, human rights and social justice in Turkey and will engage in discussions involving current events in Turkey and the region. Prior to his election to Parliament, Paylan served in the central committee of the HDP and also served on management boards of Armenian schools in Istanbul. He has long promoted bilingual education and minority rights in Turkey and has been actively engaged in raising awareness on issues of discrimination toward minorities, the rights of the Armenian community in Turkey, Turkish-Armenian reconciliation, Hrant Dink’s case, and justice for the Armenian Genocide. His family originates from Malatya, and he is currently one of three deputies in the Turkish Parliament who are of ethnic Armenian heritage. On Saturday, September 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Paylan was the featured speaker at an

On Sunday morning, September 25, at 10 a.m., Garo Paylan attended the Mass at St. Leon Cathedral, 3325 N. Glenoaks, Burbank, CA, and at 11:30 a.m., he attended the Mass at Holy Cross Cathedral, 900 W. Lincoln, Montebello, CA. On Sunday afternoon, September 25, at 4:00 p.m., Garo Paylan paid homage to the martyrs of the Armenian Genocide by laying a wreath at the Monument in Bicknell Park, Montebello. Importance of School-Community Relations Today's schools must develop intelligent public understanding of the school in all aspects of its operation. 1. determine how the public feels about the school and what it wishes the school to accomplish. 2. secure adequate financial support for a sound educational program. 3. help citizens feel a more direct responsibility for the quality of education the school provides.

4. earn the good will, respect, and confidence of the public in professional personnel and services of the institution. 5. bring about public realization of the need for change and what must be done to facilitate essential progress.
6. involve citizens in the work of the school and the solving of educational problems. 7. promote a genuine spirit of cooperation between the school and community in sharing leadership for the improvement of community life.
The effective administrators must be alert to the educational needs and the political pressures in the community. A well-designed formal school-community relations program, augmented by an effective informal communications network, will help meet this goal.

NISHAN NICHOLAS BERKSANLAR Born in Los Angeles in 1993. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Kurken (OIA Executive Committee’s former President) and Talin Berksanlar. Graduated from the University of Arizona, from Eller School of Business, where he received his BS in Business Economics. He already accepted a position at Enterprise Rent a Car Company being trained as regional Sales manager. Nishan’s goal is upon gaining some real world experience to move into his father’s business, Bey-Berk Int’l where he will be involved developing “special markets”, mainly concentrating in licensing business for Bey-Berk brand products. Nishan summarizes his future plans in the following manner “I hope to grow, learn and excel in trade and business environment where my ancestral roots are embedded”

independent Armenia, 33 athletes will represent the country in eight Olympic sports at the Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the National Olympic Committee said. Six Armenians have achieved qualifying standards in athletic events, including Levon Aghasyan, Gor Nerkararyan, Gayane Chiloyan, Lilit Harutyunyan, Diana Khubeseryan and Amaliya Sharoyan. Five boxers – Artur Hovhannisyan, Narek Abgaryan, Aram Avagyan, Hovhannes Bachkov and Vladimir Margaryan – will represent the country at the Olympics. Armenia has secured berths for three artistic gymnasts – Harutyun Merdinyan, Artur Davtyan and Houry Gebeshian. The country has received a Universality invitation from the International Swimming Federation (FINA) to send two swimmers (one male and one female) to the Olympics. Vahan Mkhitaryan and Monika Vasilyan will thus compete in the Games. Seven Armenian weightlifters have qualified for the Rio Olympics – Andranik Karapetyan, Arakel Mirzoyan, Simon Martirosyan, Ruben Aleksanyan, Gor Minasyan, Nazik Avdalyan and Sona Pogosyan, as well as Vanik Avetisyan as a reserve. Armenia has qualified a total of eight wrestlers into the Olympic competition: Garnik Mnatsakanyan, David Safaryan, Georgy Ketoyev, Levan Berianidze, Migran Arutyunyan, Arsen Julfalakyan, Maksim Manukyan and Artur Aleksanyan.

WEIGHTLIFTER GOR MINASYAN WINS ARMENIA’S THIRD SILVER AT RIO OLYMPICS Gor Minasyan, 21, won Armenia’s third silver medal the 2016 Rio Olympics on Tuesday in the men’s +105kg weightlifting competition, lifting a combined total of 451 kg. In 2010, Minasyan won a silver medal at the Summer Youth Olympics. Armenia’s Ruben Aleksanyan, 26, came in fourth place, lifting a combined total of 440 kg. Georgian weightlifter Lasha Talakhadze, lifting 473 kg, and Irakli Turmanidze, lifting 448 kg, won gold and bronze respectively.

Earlier on Tuesday, Artur Aleksanyan, 24, became the first athlete to win a gold medal for the Armenia team, beating Cuba’s Yasmany Daniel Lugo Cabrera in the final round of the men’s Greco-Roman 98 kg wrestling competition.

Yana Egorian, representing Russia at the Rio games, won on Monday the gold medal in the women’s fencing competition. She competed against her own teammate, Sofya Velikaya, and secured her win scoring five consecutive points. Born in Yerevan, Armenia, Egorian moved to Russia at a young age and began her fencing career training with renowned fencing athletes.

Չորս հայ մարզիկներէն երկու բռնցքամարտիկներ եւ երկու ծանրորդներ մրցակցեցան մետալներու համար Օգոստոս 10-ին Ռիո Տի Ժանէյրոյի ամառնային Խաղերուն ընթացքին, յայտարարեց Ազգային Ողիմպիական Յանձնախումբը (ՀԱՕԿ):
Բռնցքամարտիկներ` Արամ Ավագյան եւ Հովհաննես Բաչկով մրցեցան Ճափոնի Arashi Morisakiի եւ Վենեզուելլայի Լուիս Մարթըն Արքոնայի դէմ համապատասխանաբար: Այնուհետեւ 2009ի աշխարհի ախոյեան ծանրորդ՝ Նազիկ Աւտալեան եւ 2008 եւ 2016ի Եւրոպայի ախոյեան եւ ծանրորդ՝ Անդրանիկ Կարապետեան, մասնակցեցան մրցումին: 33 հայ մարզիկները որակաւորուեցան ամառնային Ողիմպիական 31 խաղերուն, որ Հայաստանը ներկայացնող ամենաբարձր թիւն էր: ԱՄՆու Ողիմպիական խումբէն, ՆԱՐԵԿ ԿԻՒՐԵՂԵԱՆ զաւակը՝ Պոլսահայ Միութեան նախկին հոգաբարձու Տիար Միրիճան եւ
Թիավարութեան մր-ցակցութեան: Ադամ Գրիգորեան, ԱՄՆ - ու, կանանց ջրագնդակի գլխաւոր մարզիչ, տեսաւ յաղթանակը, երբ իր խումբը յաղթեց 11-4 կէտով Սպանիոյ դէմ.: ԱՆ նոր վերադարձած էր Ռիօ Տի Ժանեյրոյէն, ընտանեկան սուգի այցով, երբ անոր եղբայրը, Պլէյք Գրիգորեան, Սիլիքոն Հովիտի գործարար՝ մահացաւ Օգոստոս 3-ին բնական պատճառներով:
FOUR ARMENIAN ATHLETES FOUGHT FOR OLYMPIC MEDALS IN RIO

Four Armenian athletes- two boxers and two weightlifters –competed for medals on August 10 during the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the National Olympic Committee of Armenia (NOCA) said on Wednesday. The boxers Aram Avagyan and Hovhannes Bachkov faced Arashi Morisaki of Japan and Luis Martin Arkona of Venezuela respectively.
including one gold medal and two silver medals. The gold medal was won by wrestler Armen Nazaryan in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. The first ethnic Armenian athlete winning Olympic gold was gymnast Hrant Shahinyan, as a member of the USSR team in 1952 in Helsinki, winning two gold medals and two silver medals.
Then weightlifter Nazik Avdalyan, world champion in 2009 and European champion in 2008 and 2016, and weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan, the acting European champion, entered the fight. Thirty-three Armenian athletes have qualified for the 31st Summer Olympic Games, the highest ever number representing Armenia.
From the U.S. Olympics team, NAREG GUREGIAN son of OIA former Trustee Mr. Mirican and Ani Guregian, competed in the finals on August 11 with his partner, Anders Weiss, coming in 5th place in the semifinals on August 10 in the men’s Coxless Pair rowing competition. Adam Krikorian, the U.S. women’s water polo coach, saw victory when his team won 11-4 over Spain. He had just returned to Rio de Janeiro after a grieving family visit when his brother, Blake Krikorian, a Silicon Valley businessman, died on August 3 of natural causes. Armenia has won twelve Olympic medals since its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991,
Rowing, often referred to as crew in the United States, is a sport with origins back to Ancient Egyptian times. It is based on propelling a boat (racing shell) on water using oars. By pushing against the water with an oar, a force is generated to move the boat.
