In June-July 2010 a team of Providence College and University of Ghana students led by Dr. Stephen Mecca taught members of Matthew 25 House in Koforidua how to make charcoal from agricultural residues using a simple technique developed by Amy Smith at the D-Lab at MIT. This is a video of the process as it was explained to the small group of farmers and street vendors. Attending the workshop were representatives from the Department of Women's Affairs (who saw this as a way of empowering women and farmers to add to their livelihood) and the Prison System (who saw this as a way to train inmates for gainful enterprise following the service of their terms).
