GEEC first started as our pilot project in the summer of 2007, bringing together the brightest and most motivated high-school aged girls from each of Pokuase's four public schools. GEEC is a weekend class that uses a very hands-on method of teaching, compared with the heavy lecturing and dictating that is used in public schools in Ghana; we hope to improve the girls' critical thinking and exploration of their own interests. In GEEC, the girls do science experiments, learn computer skills, improve their writing and reading skills, get mentoring and career-based assistance, go on field trips, listen to guest speakers, and participate in music, theater, and writing workshops, among many other activities. We also provide need-based scholarships for junior and senior secondary school and performance-based scholarships for college as well.
