Mayor Rob Ford Storms Toronto Police Kicks off Black History Month All Nations Full Gospel Church Celebrations By Emmanuel Ayiku, Toronto
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford made a campaignstyle community visit to the All Nations Full Gospel Church on Steeles Avenue on Sunday January 5, 2014.
By Vernon Ayiku, Toronto The Toronto Police department kicked February off with their 20th annual Black History Month Celebration. G98.5 radio personalities MC Bonde “The Voice of Africa” and RED hosted the event at 40 College Street at the Toronto Police Services headquarters. Keynote speaker Deputy Chief Peter Sloy highlighted the event, by honoring Larry McLarty, Toronto’s first black police officer. Earlier this year the Black Business and Professional Association unveiled a new national scholarship in his name. The money from the scholarship comes from donations from the Service’s Black Internal Support Network, a group developed in 1986 that now gives more than 1600,00 in financial awards in support of academic excellence. McLarty, retired from the force 18 years ago. The event also featured music from singer Ray Robinson and the Revivaltime Tabernacle Choir.

There was also the presentation of the Keith Forde Youth of Excellence Service Award. Black history month celebrations will continue through the city as the month goes on.
He was warmly welcomed by the General Overseer of the Church, Rev. Dr. Samuel Donkor. He praised the Mayor for his leadership of the City. Rev. Dr. Donkor recounted the support the Mayor had given to the opening and sustaining of community churches in the Greater Toronto Area. He assured the Mayor that the Church had been praying for him during his recent and on-going troubles at City Hall. “We love you Mayor. We have been praying for you, we will stand with you and we will always vote for you”, Rev.
Rev. Dr. Samuel Donkor and Mayor Rob Ford Donkor said to applause from the congregation. Mayor Ford told the congregation that he was in full campaign mood and that together “we will win the election on October 27”. Touching on his recent troubles, Mayor Ford said that
“I want to assure you that it wouldn’t happen again”. “I made personal mistakes. I can assure you that it wouldn’t happen again. He introduced a Ghanaian-Canadian body builder named Jerry who he has just hired who is helping him work on his weight.
