Everything Greenhill
It’s time to start talking about socioeconomic differences.
O
n any given Friday, senior Alexandria King heads to the cafeteria to eat her lunch while some of her classmates drive off-campus to eat. King typically isn’t part of the senior off-campus lunch crowd. With her tight family budget, she plans every outing in advance, weighing details such as restaurant choice and cost. “I think there’s just not a level of understanding that the smallest of things present barriers to some people,” said King. “An easy trip to Starbucks or Smoothie King, small purchases to larger purchases, aren’t as easy for some people. It’s a position of privilege, to be honest, and a lack of experience.” High school is a challenging time for most students, regardless of socioeconomic status. At an elite school like Greenhill, where Upper School tuition costs more than $30,000 a student, there’s an added layer of complication for students who don’t share the same affluence or privilege as many of their classmates. For students like Alexandria King, schools like Greenhill can be a daunting world of $50,000 cars, $20 off-campus lunches and holidays at five-star resorts. It’s a world where some students are frequently reminded that that they don’t measure up, at least not financially, to their more affluent peers.
