THE URBAN BUFFER
HOUSING AND OFFICES PARIS / FRANCE FALL 2014
Team Size :
The project is located in Rue du Chevaleret in the 13th district of Paris, a changing neighborhood that hosts the biggest urban operation since Haussmanian times. It is called ZAC Paris Rive Gauche. That new neighborhood is built on top of the railroads to create a continuity with the city. Thus, the site is considered as a buffer zone since it connects the new ZAC and the ancient urban grid, creating two entrances at different levels in the project : one from the lower street and one from the higher. The project consists of 35 apartments in three seperate buildings with a common plaza and two office floors that are accessible from the lower street. These offices have an interior green courtyard that offers a beautiful space to stay in and breaks the rigidity of the haussmanian buildings of the street. The concept was to emphasize the corner Rue du Chevaleret and Rue de Tolbiac which has an important visibility. The facades are dynamic by the floors set backs that follow sun’s path allowing each terrace to have enough exposure to sun which is an added value in windy Paris.

The main idea was to reflect the site’s contrast on the design. The split between the two buildings refers to the gap between the two streets and creates a visual connection with the city and its landmarks. Also the different height of the two buildings is significant to emphasize this hierarchy.

JAPANESE KIOSQUE
COMMERCIAL KIOSK CHICAGO / USA
CONCEPT / INSPIRATION
FALL 2015
Team Size : I DEALLY LOCATED IN OSAKA GARDEN, THIS PROJECT
IS INSPIRED BY ITS SITE. THE BLOOMING KIOSQUE IS A METAPHOR OF A LOTUS FLOWER, WHICH IS SACRED IN THE BUDDHIST CULTURE. Located CONVERTIBLE in Jackson Park, Osaka Garden is ADAPTABLE, AND PEACEFUL, IT OPENS UP TO BEAUTIFUL THUS A PERFECT a park withinVIEWS, a park. It MAKING was built in 1893 SETTING FORWorld’s A JAPANESE RESTAURANT. for the Columbian Exposition, and created to cement the ties of friendship between Chicago and Japan. I decided to design the kiosk in this beautiful context. Thus, the project is inspired by its site. The blooming kiosk is a metaphor of a lotus flower, which is sacred in the buddhist culture. Adaptable, convertible and peaceful, it opens up to beautiful views, making a perfect setting for a japanese restaurant. It’s an attractive functional structure that allows for the sale/purchase of japanese goods relevant to the chosen site in an outstanding landscape. It’s a metallic structure composed of a central column and 8 lateral columns that are caged in triangular shaped elements and hidden by an integrated green wall system. The kiosk deploys and closes the way the lotus flower blossoms and close with each sunrise and sunset. The movable elements are sandwich panels attached to the hydraulic cylinders that enable the movement. The roof is made out of polycarbonate membrane to let natural light come in.

THE INNER CITY
HOUSING PROJECT SAINT-OUEN / FRANCE SPRING 2015
Team Size : The site is located, in North Paris Region, in a cultural and historical neighborhood since it hosts one of the biggest flea market of the city. The programs include 1500 m2 Flea shops, 60 collective housing and intermediate housing, and a public space that connects the markets.
The project was designed by two teammates and I, we did the urban design and decided for the massing together, then we divided the work evenly. We decided to keep the ancient land parcelling in strips and keep the quarter of the site for public. Indeed we created a public open green space with a plaza that breaks the market journey. Concerning my design, I made the collective dwellings that face the street and a line of intermediate housing. The main structure is made out of concrete and the exterior facade is composed of bricks and wood cladding. The intermediate dwellings are 2 single family houses that stand one on top of the other. Each unit has a private entrance, an outdoor green space. The dwelling on top is a duplex with a terrace cultivation. The collective housing is composed of 2 appartments per floor with a central open staircase and a terrace cultivation as well.

OBAMA PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY
PRESIDENTIAL CENTER CHICAGO / USA FALL 2015
Team Size :
The Barack Obama Presidential Library and museum is situated on Chicago’s South Side in the Washington Park neighborhood. It sits on the intersection of Garfield Boulevard and S Martin Luther King Drive. By creating this building within this site, it is the opportunity to enhance the regrowth of the area, and it is a tribute to Obama’s connection to this neighborhood. Indeed, before his presidency Obama worked at various times as a community organizer, lawyer, professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School, and his home is just on the other side of the park. Concerning the project, it is designed to be the first urban presidential library. Indeed, it is easily accessible thanks to the diagonale which connects the city to the park by creating a public plaza. The program consists on the creation of a museum that features an informative and historic journey through time to illustrate the story of Obama presidency. The exhibit and the temporary galleries surrounds a big atrium that leads to the oval office on the top floor.

I designed this project while I was in the engineering school. It consists on the creation of a restaurant in a Golf Resort in Paris. It is a timber glue-laminated construction. This project was a good learning opportunity for me with respect to kitchen and hygenic design. It enabled me to explore for the first time uncommon timber methods. Furthermore, I managed to make the structure functionnal as well as aesthetically pleasant.

THE LOUVRE’S EYE
ART INSTALLATION PARIS / FRANCE FALL 2014
Team Size :
The art installation takes place in the Cour Carree of the Louvre. The present-day Louvre Palace is a vast complex of wings and pavilions on four main levels which, although it looks to be unified, is the result of many phases of building, modification, destruction and restoration. The complex occupies about 40 hectares and forms two main quadrilaterals which enclose two large courtyards: the Cour Carrée (“Square Courtyard”), completed under Napoleon I, and the larger Cour Napoléon (“Napoleon Courtyard”) with the Cour du Carrousel to its west, built under Napoleon III. The analysis of the Cour Carree showed that people don’t usually stop by this beautiful courtyard. It has the function of a passageway instead of being a place where people can gather and appreciate the historical facades. That’s why my teammate and I came up with this curved corten sheet inpired by Richard Serra’s work.
