Š zero point pixel 2013 All photographs were taken on Saturday 02 November, using a Panasonic Lumix TZ40. Book constructed in QuarkXpress. Set in Exo Light and Midiet Serif (both available from fontsquirrel.com).

This book was produced as a special one-off project for a weekly photo challenge, which can be found here: http://www.photo-challenge.co.uk

the challenge This week’s challenge, entitled submission, was suggested by Ollie. He said the act of submitting last week’s challenge gave him the idea. It’s more of a conceptual challenge so I’m hoping to see some interesting interpretations! The word submission can have different meanings, so once again we refer to the dictionary for inspiration: submission noun 1. the action of accepting or yielding to a superior force or to the will or authority of another person. 2. the action of presenting a proposal, application, or other document for consideration or judgement.

the response As a typographer I’m very interested in letterforms, especially found letterforms. This challenge seemed an ideal opportunity to pursue this interest. I wanted to try and produce something that satisfied both the given interpretations of submission. Firstly, I searched the neighbourhood and took photographs of anything I found that suggested one of the letterforms I needed for the project. The criteria was simple: whatever material I found must have ‘submitted to the will of man’. In other words, if the object was naturally-occurring it would not be photographed. Secondly, once the photographs had been taken I planned to present, or ‘submit’, them in the form of a book rather than a single image. This would allow me to complement my favourite letterform with additional ones from the photoshoot.
