Hey Key Clubbers! This month has been interesting in regards to how it is the last of the year and everyone is getting a bit anxious thinking about the new year starting. We had a decent amount of hours opportunities, more than the last month, mainly to combat the Winter Break. This consisted of both real-life (both very minimal contact with others and events that had a bit of contact but was still limited) and virtual events. The board is looking for more possible virtual events whilst keeping in mind that there are members who wish to participate in the club, but are not able to due to the virus and other private situations. Focusing mainly on the 2-week break- in many’s opinions, it was a necessity- especially with all the independent struggles going on where school and volunteering are the last on one’s mind. Hopefully, everybody was able to rest well and spend time with their families- this new year may be just as wild as the last. Looking forward to 2021! Yours in Service,

Christine Nguyen

Due to the holiday season and the necessity of helpers, as a result, there were a decent amount of volunteering opportunities made available. With the pandemic, it was difficult to find places where the volunteers could earn their hours, so the majority of events were at the Dallas Arboretum. Half of this month was dedicated to students and staff having a two-weeklong break to spend time with their families, so there were no opportunities for the Key Clubbers to volunteer during that time. In the first half, however, there were a couple of events- like Breakfast with Santa, Lunch with Santa, and a couple of Christmas Village openings- all of which were at the Arboretum. According to the ratings that we were given from the volunteers, they seem to enjoy working there, so it is looking like we will keep in contact with the Arboretum for future events.

For those who were not able to attend the events, we did have a couple of opportunities that could have been done at home- like the utilization of Freerice.com, a site that donates rice to places where food sources were plentiful through the answering of simple vocabulary questions. This is a bit new for us, but Key Clubbers had to earn up to 2,000 grains of rice to earn an hour, and there is a set limitation to ensure that the members didn’t earn all of their hours through one event. We also host a donation drive this month for Good Samaritans- the donated goods consisted of water bottles, paper towels, and canned foods. There was an unexpected total of 256 items donated, so it looks like there may be more donation drives in the future- mainly because of the success and convenience for those who can not earn their hours in other ways. Regardless of the inactivity of the club due to the Winter Break, we were able to make up for it at the beginning of December. Volunteers can still earn hours at home at this very moment, and those who prefer to go out and volunteer were able to. It is getting a bit repetitive with the majority of events occurring at the Arboretum, so the online sources are making it possible for some variety. Hopefully we can start branching out and work with other places!

HOLIDAY AND NON-HOLIDAY SPIRIT By Christine Nguyen. President

KEY CLUB BEYOND THE CLUB By Tisha Gautham, LTG

Hi guys! My name is Tisha, I’m a senior, and I’m the Key Club Lieutenant Governor of Division 2s (our division). As Lieutenant governor, I act as a liaison between the TexasOklahoma Key Club district and the Key Clubs in our community. It’s my job to support the clubs in my division in any way that I can, including monthly meetings and newsletters. Being an LTG truly opened my eyes to what makes Key Club special in a way I didn’t understand as a member. First, let me go over Key Club’s basic structure. Key Club International is part of a global network, called the K-Family, of service-oriented organizations for people of all different ages and abilities. The K-family includes organizations like Key Club, Kiwanis (for adults), and Circle K (for college students). Kiwanis is the main organization of the family and created the other organizations in order to promote service in the youth. As a result, every Key Club has a sponsoring Kiwanis that helped charter them and guides them during their years as a club (ours is the Garland Kiwanis) Key Club is a GLOBAL organization, but it can be so easy to forget this when the majority of our interaction with the club only comes from local volunteer events. This is unfortunate, since so much of what makes Key Club special lies in this global network. Key Club’s International structure was created with built-in resources for Key Clubs. For example, since every Key Club has to be associated with a sponsoring Kiwanis, all clubs have another service organization that involves them in their service projects, financially supports them, and acts as a valuable source of knowledge about the community. Additionally, the fact that all the clubs in a community share one LTG ensures opportunities for interclub interaction every month at Divisional meetings. Lastly, the fact that dues are collected by one, the central organization allows massive projects to be funded with the sum of the clubs’ dues. For example, dues go towards scholarships, huge conventions, and youth leadership opportunities. None of these resources and opportunities would be available if club dues weren’t pooled together into a larger sum. Now that you know what lies beyond the club level of Key Club, take advantage of it! Run for a district-level position, participate in the Garland Kiwanis’s events, or look out for Key Club scholarships!

MAJOR By joining March for Babies Step Up! you are helping moms and babies across the country, during a time when it’s needed most. Thanks to you we are adding new programs and resources to help families during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. More than 10 million kids enter a children’s hospital like Children's Health across North America every year. To provide the best care for kids, children’s hospitals rely on donations and community support, as Medicaid and insurance programs do not fully cover the cost of care.

Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus—a deadly disease that steals the lives of nearly 31,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year.
