Hey Key Clubbers! New year, New Key Club! Just kidding, it’s the same Key Club as it was last semesterhowever, it looks like we’re finally starting on new projects and discovering new volunteer opportunities as 2021 continues its roll. January has been just online opportunities with the occasional face to face ones, but this is just a slow prerequisite to internal projects rather than just volunteering at places themselves. Though, we are planning on continuing with the online opportunities, since it is a convenient way for members who are stuck at home to earn their house. Those who can go outside will have the opportunity to once plans are finalized. With things picking up their pace, hopefully, we’ll be able to finish off the year stronger than how we started it. Yours in Service, as always,

Christine Nguyen

Volunteering around your community can be a lot of fun and you get to have so many new experiences that you never tried or seen before. But sometimes finding where to go volunteering at can be super hard and stressful. One of my favorite ways to volunteer is to find my other activities I do both in and out of school and see what volunteer opportunities are available within those areas. This will allow you to find unique opportunities that not everyone else has found and you will already be comfortable with them. Personally for me, I have volunteered at Garland by putting my homecoming dance decorations and taking decorations down. As a Class of 2021 officer I am already required to help plan the dance, so by staying some extra hours after school I can go above and beyond for planning the dance and get service hours!

Another passion of mine is swimming. Swim meets are usually on the weekends or after school and they always need volunteers to help time and run the meet. On weekends where I am free, I will look for local swim meets in my area to volunteer as. While getting volunteer hours I can also enjoy watching people swim and sometimes even cheer on my friends who might be swimming during the meet. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, since we did not have school I was able to help volunteer at my JV District meet as a timer. Although I had to wake up pretty early it was such a fun experience and I got to hang out with people from other GISD schools. Many sports require additional help during their games or matches so there's something out there for everyone. Just ask your local city recreation department or local elementary schools, they are always looking for help! This is a great opportunity especially with COVID because sports games are now very safe and socially distant. Go out in the community and combine your passions!

MOST MEMORABL E MOMENT OF SERVICE

11

By Minori Kikuchi, Member My most memorable moment of service at Key Club of 2020 was the Christmas Village event at the Arboretum! Although it was during a really dark and cold night, it was somehow a heartwarming experience. I had known about the extravagance of the garden, but I was still blown away by how well decorated it was. It really did feel like a small village, especially when the crowds had dispersed and Key Club members could do some exploring of their own. The store that I maintained with a fellow member, Tatum, was the bakery. At the bakery, we had to hand out cute pretzel-shaped cookies to the “customers” of the town; it was great watching the people brighten up after receiving a treat! In addition to handing cookies out, we had to aid customers on their scavenger hunts for various animals in the village. In our bakery resided a small hedgehog, and after talking to several struggling seekers, it seemed to be one of the harder animals to find. The hedgehog a small spikey ball in the corner of the room, so we often had to give hints for scavenger hunters to find it. I found that constantly being able to improve the tips and hints was neat, and I was also able to test out ways of phrasing and emphasis of sentences. The repetitiveness of new visitors let me get a little more comfortable with talking to strangers. Although we were not allowed to wander around too much, if there were visitors, once it become late and people had started to leave, I was able to see other people's shops. We had to hurry and run around since it was so cold and rainy; that could seem unpleasant to some, but I enjoyed it because it reminds me of when we used to be able to go out to places and go around exploring them. It was such a unique experience to volunteer there, and hopefully, I could do it again! The place and people had made it my most memorable volunteering event of the year of 2020, and without Key Club, it wouldn’t have been possible.

MAJOR By joining March for Babies Step Up! you are helping moms and babies across the country, during a time when it’s needed most. Thanks to you we are adding new programs and resources to help families during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. More than 10 million kids enter a children’s hospital like Children's Health across North America every year. To provide the best care for kids, children’s hospitals rely on donations and community support, as Medicaid and insurance programs do not fully cover the cost of care.

Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus—a deadly disease that steals the lives of nearly 31,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year.
