Hey Key Clubbers! November is ending, and I'd like to say that while things did not go as plan, we were still able to have fun and make up for what was lost. "What was lost" being the preplanned events getting canceled due to the pandemic. The few events that we had this month were relatively successful! Some of the things we've accomplished so far is deciding on next year's t-shirts. We're skipping this year to establish some sort of schedule for the following years- that way members can wear their shirts from the beginning of the year to the end! Garland High School's Key Club was also able to host our first social- towards the end of our Thanksgiving Break. Members were able to enforce a bond with one another by playing games like Among Us and streaming a movie together. Even with the ups and downs, it looks like everything is still moving along on the right track. In the first couple weeks of December, we are having a a couple service opportunities at the Arboretum, so I think it'll be interesting. Looking forward to December with the Key Clubbers! Thank you for a great semester of the new school year, Yours in Service,

Christine Nguyen

On Halloween, I had attended a trash pickup volunteer opportunity. It was a slightly rare occasion, as I don't always have time to go to volunteering events. They are often far away from my house and are usually on my busy Saturdays. However, this time, I saw that the event took place nearby, so I took the opportunity immediately. Not surprisingly, Halloween was canceled this year due to the pandemic, so I also saw it as a chance to "celebrate" it with people outside of my family. I am glad that there were many locations for this event; it made it much more accessible for me. When I arrived in the area, I was happy to see that some of my friends were there. Since I am in remote learning, it is difficult for me to reach out and talk to people, especially if I don't have any classes with them.

During the event, our group of about twenty had split up into two groups to pick up trash from different trails. My friends and I stuck together and shared the trash bag and trash pickup stick. Although it is strange to say, it was fun to spot and pick up trash with them. Since we were the only freshmen, we stuck together, which helped strengthen our bonds. That is challenging to do at home when quarantining, so I am thankful for any of these occasions. Additionally, I think that we were able to show leadership when taking the initiative to separate from the group to pick up a piece of trash that was somewhat far away. I believe we got more confident as the two hours of volunteering passed and felt less alienated from the group of upperclassmen. I think it is nice that we were able to help the community while simultaneously building friendships and character. Although what we did was minuscule when comparing it to the entire world, I think the important thing was that we were doing something to add to everyone else's small feats. Thanks to Key Club, I was able to help add some good into the world while improving myself.

SERVICE AND ME

MY DAY AS AN ELF By Kevin Lam, Treasurer One of the most memorable service projects that I took part in was last year's Pancakes With Santa. Pancakes with Santa was an event where children could get free books and breakfast at the local fire station while also being able to take a picture with Santa himself. After eating a wonderful sausage and egg meal, I then passed out different books to children with other members. In addition, we had a station where we made little snowmen out of old cardboard which was fun and creative. Pancakes with Santa was fun as I was able to interact with children and families of all backgrounds. Seeing the joy on the kids' faces when they got a free book made me feel happy as well since all books do is give me anxiety nowadays. As the event progressed, I came to the realization that to an extent, children can be more grateful than teens and adults making them way cooler than us. After handing out books, my best friend Katelyn Trân and I decided to take a fresh picture with Mr. Santa Clause. To be honest this is the only time I consciously volunteered to take a picture with the man. Working with children is always a wonderful experience along with meeting their families and getting to know them and their stories. From this experience I’ve improved my skills with working with others and being more social and comfortable with strangers as well as making cool little snowmen out of cardboard.

MAJOR By joining March for Babies Step Up! you are helping moms and babies across the country, during a time when it’s needed most. Thanks to you we are adding new programs and resources to help families during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. More than 10 million kids enter a children’s hospital like Children's Health across North America every year. To provide the best care for kids, children’s hospitals rely on donations and community support, as Medicaid and insurance programs do not fully cover the cost of care.

Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus—a deadly disease that steals the lives of nearly 31,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year.
