a message from the president Hey Key Clubbers! This is my final note as the President of Garland High School's Key Club, since the 2020-21 board's term ends on April 17th. We have used our time in consideration to the adjusted school schedules and have been prioritizing the training of our new board. I have faith that the officer-elects will do a wonderful job in assisting our future members in their journey of community service and overall volunteerism. With that being said, the school year is still not quite over, and I look forward to continuing my participation in the club, regardless of holding a position as an officer. Yours in Service, as always,
Christine Nguyen

KIDS AGAINST HUNGER This month, Garland Key Club participated in multiple service events, but my favorite, by far, was the Kids Against Hunger Event, hosted by Allen Kiwanis. I woke up at 6:30 in the morning in order to arrive at the United Disciples Christian Church by 7:30. After a week of relaxing at home during spring break, I was ready to get to work. When I pulled up to the church, I was greeted with a large truck filled with large bins. Multiple Key Clubs from division 2S along with various Kiwanis clubs came together to participate in this event. We started the day by unloading the truck and organizing the bins onto tables to create stations. There were multiple food packaging stations and one boxing station. All volunteers were then required to wash their hands, put on gloves, and wear a hair net. Sanitation and cleanliness were a top priority at an event like this. The volunteers then split into groups of 6 and were assigned to a station. The adult volunteers were in charge of boxing the completed food bags. The stations were set up like an assembly line, with each volunteer contributing to create the final product. We were creating nutritious food bags that would be donated to women and children at the border.

The first person in the line would open and hold the bag underneath a funnel. The next 4 people would each pour a scoop of seasoning or grain into the funnel, which would end up in the bag. The filled bag would then be passed onto the next person to be weighed and then lastly be heat pressed and sealed by the last person in line. The adult volunteers would then pick up these completed food bags to be packaged into large cardboard boxes and put back onto the truck. 4.5 hours and 88 full boxes of food later, we left, feeling accomplished and happy.

A FUTURE TO LOOK FORWARD TO By Christine Nguyen, President
This month, our Key Clubbers had their spring break for two consecutive weeks, to which we did have two in-real-life events during it. One of them was a food packing event at a local church, a project called Kids Against Hunger. Volunteers from our Key Club and a couple other school’s were to pack boxes full of food to be sent to women and children at the border between the United States and Mexico. The other was also food related where our volunteers worked at a local food pantry to help the establishment organize their donations. For those who are unable to work in a physical location, they had the opportunity to get their hours through virtual means, like Zooniverse, a website that listed projects available for volunteers to contribute to, and Freerice, a website that donated rice in accordance with how many questions volunteers have correctly answered. Not only have we used our free time wisely in accordance with the members by providing events, but we have also used the time to train our officer-elects. Our new board members had private meetings with our old members individually to get all information out about their new responsibilities. For me and my officer elect, we had discussed subjects like meetings and how to organize them, as well as what to discuss during them, articles, as well as resources. It was a decent amount of information to cover, so as we went over them, it was typed out in a Google Document for convenience and future reference. The other officers and their elects also used the same method. Since our term ends on April 17th, it is imperative that we ensure that the new board is thoroughly prepared for their terms. I have no doubts in regards to the abilities of the officer-elects and that the next year will be great with them leading our future Key Club members.

falling for key club BY
YI
WONG,
VICE-PRESIDENT
Key Club is a wonderful opportunity to be able to communicate with others, work hard, while also helping out the community. In the beginning, I’ve heard about Key Club from my sister, as she used to be a member of the club. She had to go do interesting events like the color run, and help out in unique ways like staying late at night at the school. It was all very unique and interesting to me, and so one of the first clubs I knew about that was offered at Garland, was Key Club. And when “fish camp” came along, I decided to sign up for the club and see what it was like for myself. And it’s been really fun, I’ve been able to participate in events that I’ve never done before, and help out in ways that make me feel satisfied in the work I’ve done for the community. I never really went out much whenever I was younger, and so I never participated in events or did stuff to help out the community before. I participated in some events like the Turkey Trot and the walk to end Alzheimer’s, were fun since I went through Downtown Dallas with other key clubbers and we helped out people with handing out things. And we were able to see the decorations and the different kinds of people participating in the events. Another event where I’ve had no prior experience or knowledge of, was helping out in concession stands. I was able to first hand have an experience on what it was like to work at concessions and being able to prepare the food and talk with customers. It was difficult at times whenever there were breaks and the lines would increase immensely from practically nothing a few minutes ago. But even so, I still really enjoyed the experience, and if given the chance to, I would volunteer for an event like that again. While some events are more fun and nice to hang out with other people, there are others that give jobs that once you finish, give a sense of accomplishment. One example was an event at the Watson Technology Center for Math & Science, where we were required to paint some activities for the kids to play with and have fun. I was part of a group that painted some TicTacToe squares, and it was slightly difficult to get it perfect, but overall I still enjoyed the work and I thought it was really nice to do this for kids to play and have fun with doing. And also because of Key Club, I was able to do stuff like the Lake Ray Hubbard Cleanup, where I had to physically go out of my way to get as much trash anywhere and everywhere I can. And while being messy with the mud and trash, I still really enjoyed going out of my way to help clean the environment one bottle at a time. There are plenty of other events that I have volunteered at and enjoyed with my years with Key Club, but I enjoyed all of them for various reasons. And I wouldn’t have been able to experience or do most of the things that I have if it wasn’t for Key Club. Not only being able to help out people and the community, I’m also able to experience something new and enjoy the experiences I have with other people. I first joined the club due to it seeming interesting, and I didn’t know what else I should do. But over time, I have “fall”ed in love with the club, being to do the volunteer events that are both a new experience, and helps out people. If that’s not a better reason to join Key Club, then I don’t know what is.

MAJOR By joining March for Babies Step Up! you are helping moms and babies across the country, during a time when it’s needed most. Thanks to you we are adding new programs and resources to help families during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. More than 10 million kids enter a children’s hospital like Children's Health across North America every year. To provide the best care for kids, children’s hospitals rely on donations and community support, as Medicaid and insurance programs do not fully cover the cost of care.
Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus—a deadly disease that steals the lives of nearly 31,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year.
