Orange Regional has submitted a Certificate of Need application to the New York State Department of Health to construct a new 153,000 square-foot outpatient medical office building (MOB) and a 26,000 square-foot cancer center on the main campus. The plan is to relocate most existing outpatient services currently provided at other off-campus locations to these new stateof-the-art buildings. We are still in the process of getting final approval and securing financing for the project. If all goes as planned, construction will begin this spring and the project will be completed in the fall of 2016. In March, preliminary site work was completed on the North side of the campus to make room for more parking.

Specifically, Orange Regional is constructing: 1) an entirely new outpatient MOB that will be connected to the existing hospital’s two-story administration building and 2) a dedicated cancer center that will include renovation of existing space and new construction.

The buildings will be separate, yet located immediately adjacent to each other on the northern side of our hospital. We will also add 807 parking spaces and expand the road which encircles the hospital Main Campus.

The proposed MOB will be a five-story, state-of-the-art facility.

The first two floors will house all relocated outpatient diagnostic imaging services including 64 Slice CT, Wide Bore MRI, 3D Mammography, Digital X-ray, Ultrasound, EKG, Nuclear Medicine, PET/CT Scan and Fluoroscopy as well as four outpatient operating rooms, five procedure rooms, a primary care office, cardiac rehabilitation, a diabetes center, lab services, central registration, medical school space, pre-surgical testing, a retail pharmacy, a bistro and a community health resource center. Floors three to five will be occupied by physician offices affiliated with Orange Regional Medical Group which presently employs 36 physicians and mid-level providers.

“All For One” When I’ve played golf – I have never broken 80. Most of the players I’m with usually don’t either. But when we play a scramble (a format that takes the best of four shots and play from there) our group score is in the 60’s. What does that say? Simply – collectively we are better than alone.

Being the Chief Medical Officer at Orange Regional is a blessing. To be able to interact and be part of a growing organization with unlimited potential is quite an opportunity. To be able to look other leaders in the eye and know you are getting the absolute truth and best advice is very exhilarating. It frees you to be able to listen, weigh options and proceed, knowing there is wisdom on many levels.

The same is true for medicine, no one should feel alone. Our culture is not one of “gotcha” but rather lessons learned. Our Physicians Excellence Committee (PEC) exemplifies this. Don’t ever be afraid to step in and offer a hand. Who knows – tomorrow it may be you that needs a lift.

The proposed cancer center will combine existing outpatient cancer therapy services including radiation oncology and infusion, the breast center, along with oncology exam rooms and associated nursing and care provider stations into a 26,000 square foot, single-story facility attached to the main hospital. About 15,000 square feet of the existing administration building will be renovated and another 11,000 square feet of space will be added on as new construction.

The cost-savings related to the MOB and cancer center construction are significant. By removing lease obligations, the hospital anticipates saving up to $4 million annually. Updates on the progress of this project will be provided as new and important information develops. w w w. o r m c . o r g

Foundation Update Where There’s a Will There’s A Way

Ok, who out there is planning to leave their hard earned savings to the government? Anyone?

If you do not have a will in place you may become and unintended donor to the State of New York. When a person dies without having a valid will in place, his or her property passes what is called “intestate succession” to heirs according to state law. In other words, if you don’t have a will, that state will make one for you. All fifty states have laws (or “statutes”) of this kind on the books. The purpose of intestate succession statutes is to distribute the decedent’s wealth in a manner that closely represents how the average person would have had designed his or her estate plan, had that person had a will. However, this default can differ dramatically from what the person really would have wanted. Even where it is known what the person intended, no exceptions are made based on need or special circumstances.

Orange Regional Foundation recently launched a new section on its Web site, www.ormcgiving.org, to help individuals prepare their wills and consider various estate planning such as trusts and explanations of giving stocks, bonds, real estate, insurance and other appreciated assets. This site includes a Personal Planner, calculator and daily IRS tips. You can sign up for an e-newsletter to stay abreast of the latest IRS changes, too. Of course, we hope that you will consider Orange Regional as your charity of choice as you develop your estate plans. It’s a great way to ease your tax burden annually over time, too! MEDICAL EDUCATION Update For the 2015 – 2016 academic year, the Graduate Medical Education Program will have a total of four Emergency Medicine Residents, four Traditional Rotating Internship Residents and four first-year Family Medicine Residents in addition, to Dr. AnnaMaria Arias and Dr. David Morcos who will be our second-year Family Medicine Residents. Starting in July, the medical education program will also include 24 third-year medical students and 15 fourth-year medical students from Touro College.

Lecture opportunities are available at the resident level for the noon lecture series which occurs on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each week. If interested in giving a noon lecture, please contact Jennifer Trujillo, Medical Education Coordinator, at 845-333-1755 or jtrujillo@ormc.org.

We would be remiss if we didn’t thank all of our medical student instructors for everything they have done, and continue to do, in training our next generation of physicians. We are thrilled to watch them take the next step in their training by entering Residencies around the United States. We will update you on where they will be doing their residency training once we have a complete list.

NEWS BULLETIN GHVHS Presents Schwartz Center Rounds: Supporting Providers, Improving Quality of Care

Schwartz Center Rounds sessions are structured to help and support the caregiver and to ultimately strengthen the caregiver-patient relationship, reminding caregivers why they entered the healthcare profession.

Delivering healthcare today has become more complex than ever before. Staying on top of readmission rates and meeting length of stay targets to following documentation protocol and attaining National Patient Safety standards – and everything in between – has impacted some caregivers’ ability to make personal and emotional connections with patients, their families and colleagues.

Today, many healthcare providers are anxious, frustrated and under pressure – with no structured outlet for expressing their feelings and little preparation for the difficult communication issues that are an inevitable part of team work and patient care. For this reason, the Greater Hudson Valley Health System has been designated a Schwartz Center Rounds facility to support and assist caring for the caregiver.

No One Dies Alone Program Introduced

Through the efforts of Hospital staff, volunteers and clergy at Orange Regional, the No One Dies Alone (NODA) Program provides a reassuring presence to dying patients who would otherwise be alone. With the support of the nursing staff, “compassionate companions” volunteer their time to offer patients the valuable gift of a dignified death. The NODA Program was created in 2001 by a nurse at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Oregon. Orange Regional has launched NODA as a volunteer program that matches people who wish to volunteer their time with a patient whose death is near, so they are not alone during their final hours.

The program supports patients who are dying and who have no friends or family who are able to be with them. It is a time when nursing intervention is minimal, but the loving presence of a compassionate individual is valued.
