From The President & CEO
Commitment to Excellence
Each year we ask employees to help us gauge how well we’re doing to collectively improve Orange Regional as an excellent place to work. We Scott Batulis invite all employees to participate in the President & CEO annual employee engagement survey which launched this past November. I am very impressed with the results of the survey. This year, we showed a significant improvement moving from the 34th percentile to the 44th percentile in the Gallup healthcare database. This is a gigantic increase in one year! Our Grand Mean, which is the average score on a 5 point scale across all of the 12 questions on the survey, jumped from 3.91 to 4.05. I’m also pleased to report that 1,984 employees chose to participate this year, a record high. These gains are the largest and most significant we’ve ever seen in our 8 years of taking this survey.
Orange Regional Medical Center was recently named winner of the 2015 Silver Performance Excellence State Baldrige Award. The award recognizes a commitment to excellence and a systems approach to improving organizational performance. Our organization completed a rigorous application process and subsequent site visit conducted by a team of Baldrige Examiners. The organization was evaluated against the Baldrige Excellence Framework that focuses on six interrelated process categories and a results category. These areas represent essential aspects of managing and performing as an organization: Leadership, Strategy, Customers, Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Management, Workforce, Operations and Results. These criteria help an organization reach their goals, achieve results and become more competitive and sustainable. The aim is to align an organization’s mission, goals, and strategic plans with its people, resources and processes, to achieve great customer-patient outcomes.
Leaders have received your team’s scorecard and will share it with you in the near future. As in past years, each department will work together on celebrating their team’s strengths as well as putting a plan in place on an action item of their choosing. In the meantime, please consider your own engagement. There are many continuing and new initiatives within the hospital for you to become involved in. Think about what you can do to make a positive difference in your unit or department in 2016. We want you to be challenged, engaged and make a difference!
The Baldrige Criteria helps an organization answer three questions: Is your organization doing as well as it could? How do you know? What and how should your organization improve? In February, we will receive an extensive feedback report that will identify organization key strengths and opportunities for improvement in the seven categories detailed above, an external perspective that will help guide us in the future.
At Orange Regional, we value staff input and want our workplace to be one where everyone feels like they are contributing to the best of their abilities. Increasing overall employee engagement allows us to continuously improve our workplace which brings us closer to fulfilling our mission of providing exceptional healthcare to our patients. Congratulations on an outstanding survey and thank you to everyone who chose to participate.
This award is a reflection of the hard work by all in our organization. Congratulations to all in achieving this award and your commitment to operational excellence! A special shout-out to the Baldrige Teams and to a few individuals who deserve special acknowledgement for leading this initiative: Rose Baczewski, Fred Conklin, Peggy Cronin, Katie Haun, Natasha Mele, Kelly Roth, Jayne O’Malley, Jean-Paul Vallet and Deb Cole. More information to follow on the awards ceremony and the continuing journey in 2016.
