STAFF MATTERS

Update for Catskill Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers

January/February 2016

September/October 2015

A Message From Our Leader We’ve seen great accomplishments over the past few years and expect many successes ahead. Let me thank all who assisted Grover Hermann Hospital during the challenging situation caused by water leaks. Thank you for everyone’s cooperation during this time. We have been able to grow our organization and raise the bar on the standard of care we provide because we have worked together as a team, sharing the same mission and strategy. As we continue to shift our culture of caring, there will always be room for improvement. As we move forward, we must continue to place our patients and their families first. Physical expansion is at the forefront as we get closer to the commencement of construction for our Dr. Gerard Galarneau newest medical group office. This office will be situated close to the Montreign Resort Casino project in Monticello. Additionally, we will continue our interior transformation that will help to eliminate most double CEO & CMO and all triple occupancy rooms. We will continue to expand the Medical Group by adding Primary Care providers and specialists. Continued focus on developing processes and procedures, enhancing customer services and an overall increase in patient volume are expected in 2016. Catskill Regional will be surveyed by the Joint Commission this year. Being prepared for this survey should be a daily occurrence. We will also see continued fundraising efforts for the capital campaign, the expansion of telemetry services to certain units and the completion of the system-wide rollout of the Strata system used for budgeting. We continue to develop strategic plans for key service lines including our Emergency Room to enhance staffing and improve clinical outcomes and also to grow our new Bariatric Surgery program. These are just a few goals for Catskill Regional in the coming year. Thank you for all you’ve done and for your dedication. Sincerely, Gerard Galarneau, MD CEO & CMO

Seeing is Believing – Harris Campus Continues to Upgrade Catskill Regional is in the midst of a $5 million capital campaign that will support our monumental renovation effort. As part of our ongoing transformation, the hospital renovated two of its entrances with canopied drop off areas. Patients who are being dropped off can comfortably enter the building which features new lighting and welcoming new vestibules which keep the lobby and suite entrances warm in the winter and cool in the summer. After dropping off passengers, drivers can then proceed to all newly paved parking lots at the hospital. To date, many patient care areas have been beautifully renovated and the hospital has generously received $1.3 million from loyal supporters. With the community’s help, the hospital will be able to continue to provide outstanding care. Individuals who wish to donate to the campaign should visit www.crmcny.org/capitalcampaign or call 845-794-3300 x2104.

2016 Heart-A-Thon

The 38th Annual WSUL/WVOS Heart-a-Thon took place on Saturday, February 13. Both radio stations broadcasted live from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with the annual event raising more than $90,000. Members of the community stopped in throughout the day to make donations, listen to guest speakers, receive information and tips about heart health and participate in Crossfit, Zumba, and Step demonstrations. Radio listeners also showed their support by calling in their pledge and participating in heart heath trivia. In addition, thousands of tribute hearts were sold in honor or in memory of loved ones who have been afflicted with cardiac related conditions. Congratulations to all who took part in the success of this important fundraising campaign.

We’ve Got You Covered

Hats off to our Lab staff for their continued generosity. These awesome individuals collected and donated various soft and warm blankets for our Adult Day Care program! Now, patients can warm up to their treasured gifts knowing that the Lab staff has got them covered!

Congratulations In December, Registered Dietitians Gretchen Hartmann and Amanda Highhouse participated as reviewers for the Truman Medical Center Teaching Kitchen (crEATe) pilot. Gretchen reviewed heart failure materials and Amanda reviewed diabetes materials. Each reviewed five weeks of curriculum including PowerPoint presentations, recipes, and handouts for the community. Each RD provided Morrison Healthcare’s corporate Nutrition & Wellness team with comments and suggestions to enhance the curriculum and ensure research-based content.

Showers of Kindness Thank you to the Hudson River West Division of Kiwanis for it gracious donation. A “baby shower” was recently held where members collected basic newborn items to be donated to mothers in need at both Catskill Regional Medical Center and Orange Regional Medical Center. Pictured here are some of the Kiwanis ladies with Nursing Administrator Laura Northrup, RN.

Influenza Mandate

NEWSWORTHY Dr. Galarneau was recently presented with this gift from staff: a large-scale print out of the editorial he wrote defending our hospital after a negative article was published in a local paper. In his letter, Dr. G highlighted the numerous accomplishments of both the hospital and the staff, including recently becoming a designated stroke center and having a fully accredited Oncology program. We are proud to have him as our dedicated and inspiring leader.

In Other Words “While I can’t comment on the food as I was on a liquid diet, the nursing staff in the CCU are amazing. They are not only very well trained, but they are smart, solve problems of every type, serve as effective communicators between patients and doctors, AND are caring. Having spent five days and four nights in the CCU, I can say with experience that this group of nurses are exemplary!” - Amy Hines

In Memorium We mourn the passing of longtime employee Shirley Tyler. Shirley began her career at Catskill Regional in March of 1969, and would have been celebrating her 47th year this month. It is hard to put into words exactly how much she meant to our organization. Our thoughts go out to her family.

Now employees, volunteers and visitors can enjoy Catskill Regional’s remodeled Coffee Shop which now serves hot and iced Starbuck’s coffee and specialty beverages.
