An award winning newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers
March 2017
From The President & CEO Heart disease is still the number one cause of death in the United States and our life-saving Heart Care program is critically important to our community. Recently, we celebrated several fantastic achievements. Orange Regional has been ranked 35th out of 2,371 hospitals Scott Batulis nationwide and 6th in New York President & CEO State, for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) risk adjusted mortalities as reported by The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This is an amazing accomplishment! We also proudly accepted trophies from Healthgrades for the America’s 100 Best Hospitals Award for Coronary Intervention™ and Coronary Intervention Excellence Award™. We also were recognized by Healthgrades with a Five Star rating for Coronary Interventional Procedures, and named among the Top 5% in the Nation for Coronary Intervention. These recognitions followed our honor as a High Performing Hospital for Heart Failure and COPD by US News & World Report. I’d like to thank our physicians, leaders and staff in the Peter Frommer, M.D. Heart Center for their incredible work and world class outcomes! Additionally, we received excellent results from our recent CMS Lab Validation Survey. The CMS survey is a form of quality control and happens only once every ten years. And while it’s called a Lab survey, it really involves the entire
organization. I’m proud to say the results of the survey were spectacular, and the surveyors were very impressed by our hospital. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to this successful survey. I’d also like to congratulate our Inpatient Rehabilitation Department for its successful CARF re-accreditation survey. CARF accreditation is considered one of the hardest accreditations to achieve in healthcare. The Inpatient Rehabilitation Department has an excellent team, many of whom have worked together for many years. We’re very proud of the many successful accreditations we have achieved and the high quality of care provided to our patients every day. I would like to thank everyone who went “above and beyond” in dealing with the large snowfall and bad roads during the Blizzard of 2017, better known as Stella. All staff and departments did what was needed to take care of our patients and maintain operations. Many stayed overnight and worked long shifts. It was a great team effort and we should all be proud to work in an organization like Orange Regional. Sincerely,
Scott Batulis, President & CEO
Employees ‘Dress In Blue’ Orange Regional employees participated in National Dress in Blue Day on March 3 at the Main Campus. This event kicked off a month-long campaign to raise awareness for colon cancer.

Congratulations to DAISY Foundation Award recipient, Alyssa Crowe, RN 3 East. Alyssa was nominated for the DAISY Award for exceptional nurses by a patient she treated. “She was loving, kind, compassionate, sensitive and sweet, I can go on and on but there are just no words to describe how tender-hearted she was towards me. With
her benevolent and gentle heart, she treated me as if I was a member of her own family,” stated a very appreciative patient. Nominate a deserving nurse, by visiting www.ormc.org/DAISYAward.

Orange Regional ‘Matches’ Residency Programs with Students Nationwide
On February 6, the Graduate Medical Education Program participated in Osteopathic Match Day. Match Day is when medical schools in the United States announce the results of the national resident matching system.
positions. This is what is known as "the Scramble." This frantic, loosely structured system forces soon-to-be medical school graduates to choose programs not on their original Match list. In 2012, the NRMP introduced an "organized scramble" system.
In the United States, access to graduate medical education or training programs such as residencies is a competitive process known as "the Match."
By entering the Match system, applicants are contractually obligated to go to the residency, internship or fellowship program at the institution to which they were matched. The same applies to the medical programs; they are obligated to take the applicants who matched into them.
Senior medical students usually begin the application process at the beginning of their fourth and final year of medical school. After they apply to programs, the programs review applications and invite selected candidates for interviews that are held between October and February. After the interview period is over, students submit a "rank-order list" to a centralized matching service, currently the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), by February or the San Francisco Match for those applying into Ophthalmology in January. Similarly, residency programs submit a list of their preferred applicants in rank order to this same service. The process is blinded, so neither applicant nor program will see each other's list. Aggregate program rankings can be found and are tabulated in real time based on applicants' anonymously submitted rank lists. The two parties' lists are combined by an NRMP computer, which creates stable (optimal) matches of residents to programs using an algorithm. Prior to Match Day, candidates find out from the NRMP if they matched. If they have matched, they must wait until the Match Day (later in the week) to find out where. If they have not secured a position through the Match, the locations of remaining unfilled residency positions are released to unmatched applicants the following day. These applicants are given the opportunity to contact the programs about the open

students and five second year students in Internal Medicine; eight students in the Traditional Rotating Internship; six students in Emergency Medicine; four students in Family Medicine; three first year students and two second year students in Surgery and four students in Psychology. These students will come from all over the nation including California, Colorado, Texas, Michigan, Arizona, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. More than half of these students will come from the tri-state area. Orange Regional currently has 45 residents, which will make our grand total 87 residents come July 1.
Congratulations to our residency program directors and coordinators who worked hard during the interview process! Your work is evident with such successful matches. Orange Regional Conducts Emergency Management Drill On February 28, Orange Regional set up an emergency triage tent and prepared for a simulated scenario where the hospital received an influx of patients due to an outbreak of a novel influenza strain, dubbed the Haiphong strain. Particularly affected were children under 18 years old, children with asthma and those individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This drill situation had EDs of nearby hospitals experiencing a significant increase in numbers of ill and worried patients and Orange Regional received a total of 16 patients. Thank you to all who participated!

The Glycemic Bus Pass Award The Glycemic Bus Pass Award (aka the “Nugget”) is presented by the Glycemic Improvement Team (GIT) to units demonstrating outstanding care for inpatients with diabetes. Recipients are chosen by the GIT based on monthly reports that address the Medical management of glucose (including: day weighted mean glucose, hypoglycemia incidence and other metrics), and also nursing care as indicated by the timely reassessment of hypoglycemic events. Units that may have not yet reached goals are also acknowledged by demonstrating improvement over time. Orange Regional Medical Center has made great advances in the care of patients with diabetes over the past five years. The GIT presents the Nugget to celebrate the excellent care that we provide. Fun Facts: We use the term "Nugget" as it stands for “Nursing Unit Glucose Testing,” and the full name of the award is the Glycemic Bus Pass Award which comes from the Glycemic Bus which has been the team’s ‘mascot’. For more information about the “Nugget” award and the medical management of glucose, please contact Diabetes Clinical Manager, Laurie Porcaro, at 333-2495 or lporcaro@ormc.org.

Caring Arts Modalities (CAM) Steering Committee The Caring Art Modalities (CAM) Steering Committee, Chaired by Dr. Nader Okby and Facilitated by Regina Toomey Bueno and Sharon Geidel, is an interdisciplinary committee with representation from both Orange Regional and Catskill Regional. The Committee explores, evaluates and introduces new CAM, or complementary therapy, modalities for inpatients and outpatients that integrate with conventional medicine. Complementary therapies ('alternative', 'traditional' or 'holistic' therapies) treat the whole person, rather than the symptom of the disease. These include homeopathy, naturopathy, yoga, Reiki and acupuncture, and are often used alongside conventional medicine in a belief they can 'complement' treatments. For more information, contact CAM Coordinator, Judy Maloy at jmaloy1@ghvhs.org.
