An award winning newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers
From The President & CEO Our hospital is continuously being recognized on a national level for our commitment to excellence and patient care. Recently, we were recognized by US News & World Report as a Best Regional Hospital. In addition, we have received some of the most prestigious awards for patient safety and superior patient outcomes by Scott Batulis President & CEO Healthgrades which include being one of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention™ for 2 Years in a Row and five stars for the treatment of heart attack and pacemaker procedures. Healthgrades gave us five stars for treatment of Pneumonia; the General Surgery Excellence Award; and named ORMC among the top 10% in the Nation for General Surgery. Additionally, we are the recipient of the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award and among the top 5% in the Nation for Patient Safety. We also have five stars for vaginal delivery and C-section. Healthgrades has also recognized our Bariatric Surgery program with the Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award and named ORMC among the top 10% of hospitals for Bariatric Surgery. We are making a huge difference in the quality of care available in our community. Our continued success requires teamwork and great communication with each other and our patients. Research shows that improved communication will improve patient satisfaction, quality outcomes and patient safety. In order to improve our communication skills, we have started a new education program for all staff and physicians. This new education program, in collaboration with HealthStream, began in September and will continue throughout 2018. This new program kicks off with an interactive workshop based on the Relate model entitled People-Centered Communication: Now More Than Ever. It’s an outstanding program with proven success. If we all attend and take to heart what we learn, our patients will definitely have a better experience while in our care. Thank you in advance for your enthusiastic participation and support of this important program. Please look out for additional training information. Sincerely,
Scott Batulis President and CEO

People Centered Communication: Now More Than Ever This October, the Greater Hudson Valley Health System kicked off a new education program for all staff and physicians. 60% of medical safety incidents and 56% of surgical safety incidents are related to communication issues. The workshop, entitled PeopleCentered Communication: Now More Than Ever, was developed to improve the patient experience and prevent safety issues by improving communication skills. The image below, which encompasses the RELATE model, will be used as part of the workshop to help employees communicate effectively and choose words that work to create a patientcentered experience. Training sessions have begun and will go through 2018. All are required to complete the course by the end of 2018.

Employee Health And Wellness Corner As the temperature drops and the leaves continue to fall, here are some preventative measures to stay healthy:
Prevention With Vaccination An annual seasonal flu vaccine (either the flu shot or the nasal spray flu vaccine) is the best way to reduce the chances that you will get seasonal flu and spread it to others. When more people get vaccinated against flu, less flu can spread through that community.
Is It A Cold Or The Flu? Although the common cold and the flu share many similar symptoms, they are two different conditions. The symptoms of a cold develop slowly and can include sore throat, runny or stuffy nose (often with green or yellow colored discharge) and more. Flu symptoms usually appear suddenly and can include nausea, chills and sweats.
Healthy Dessert Baked Cinnamon Apple Chips Ingredients: 2-3 of your favorite apples, 2 tbsp cinnamon Directions: Preheat oven to 200°F. Slice each apple into very thin slices (the thinner the crunchier). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper, then lay apple slices out evenly. Sprinkle each apple with cinnamon. Bake for 1 hour, turn apples slices over, and bake for 1 hour and 30 minutes. Turn oven off and let apple chips cool on oven. Enjoy the chips in oatmeal or snack on them alone.
Take Action Every Day Take every day preventative actions to stop the spread of germs. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, as germs spread this way.
Being Exceptional Every Day (BEE) Award Orange Regional’s Being Exceptional Every day (BEE) Award recognizes and celebrates a non-nurse care team member for providing extraordinary, compassionate care. Working in conjunction with the DAISY award, which honors nurses for exemplifying compassionate and empathetic care to patients, the BEE award recognizes additional members of the patient care team. The September 2017 BEE Award was presented to Nikki Rogers, Radiology Technician from Diagnostic Imaging. Thank you Nikki for going above and beyond for our patients. To make a nomination, email BEEAward@ghvhs.org.
From L to R: Diagnostic Imaging Director, Joyce Timko and X-Ray Technician, Nikki Rogers.
