December 2017

From The President & CEO

Scott Batulis President & CEO

Last month, Orange Regional was visited by our new accreditation agency, Det Norske Veritas (DNV) for our initial annual accreditation survey. DNV is an international certification and accreditation agency whose focus is on quality driven clinical excellence through the use of ISO 9001 standards. By adopting and applying ISO 9001 standards, organizations can achieve consistent results by concentrating on continually improving processes. We had a very positive experience during our first survey and received praise about the collaborative nature of the survey process from employees who participated.

While we do have some work to do, Orange Regional did not receive any condition level nonconformances, which equates to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ “Conditions of Participation”. Congratulations to all employees for a job well done! On behalf of the entire Executive Team, thank you to all those who made the survey a success including our Quality Team, Leaders and IT staff who ensured that the survey process ran smoothly. Our surveyors were very complimentary of the staff they met and everyone’s enthusiasm for their work. This year we were very fortunate to receive a record number of national and regional clinical excellence awards in Patient Safety, Cardiac Interventional Procedures, Pacemakers, Heart Attack, Cardiology, Pneumonia, General Surgery, Gallbladder Surgery, Newborn and C-Section Delivery, Bariatric Surgery, Heart Failure, Hip replacement, COPD and Stroke in addition to our Most Wired award for IT and the Most Beautiful Hospital in the U.S. Award. My sincere thanks to all our employees, physicians and volunteers for making 2017 a great year. Please have a healthy and safe holiday season. I wish you a peaceful New Year! Sincerely,

Scott Batulis President and CEO

Scenes From Our In-house Holiday Reception This year’s in-house holiday reception was well-deserved. Thank you to all employees and volunteers for everything you do. Have a happy holiday!

Update

December 2017

Congratulations Dr. Aamir Gilani was recently awarded FCCP designation by The College of Chest Physicians at the CHEST conference in Toronto. Obtaining the FCCP designation recognizes him as a leader in CHEST, his profession, his institution and most importantly demonstrates commitment to his patients. He also presented a poster and presentation on ventilation weaning in the ICU with Touro students.

Out And About

On December 4, Dr. Rona Heublum-Colton and Dr. David Morcos presented a talk to the Senior Coffee Club at the Liberty Public Library. They discussed the difference between urgent care and emergency care, and when you should go to one rather than the other.

Notes Of Thanks

Dear Dr. Roman, Deb, and staff: Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts! Your generosity is phenomenal and touched us deeply. All of your gifts will be used by the most vulnerable and poorest of our women, moms and babies and the check will be used to buy safe sleeping environments for babies who have no safe cribs. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us!! With love, the Women's Health and Wellness Program at MISN: Carol, Sherrill, Sendy, and Linnette and on behalf of Caren Fairweather, MISN's Executive Director -2-

Surfing Your Benefits The Human Resources Department held its annual Benefits Fair in Conference Rooms 1,2 & 3 on November 18. This year’s theme was “Surfing your Benefits” and Human Resources staff dressed up in tropical-themed clothes as they helped employees navigate the sea of booths and information. Vendors varying from Sam’s Club to Aflac to Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield set up booths throughout the fair to share useful information and free goodies with Orange Regional staff. The fair featured an impressive array of prizes that participants of the Benefits Fair Scavenger Hunt, where staff members while visiting each booth filled out a benefits quiz and once complete, were entered into the contest for a chance to win. If you need assistance with your health benefits, contact your Human Resources Business Partner at x1900.

A Season IT Nurse Recounts Volunteer Effort To Relieve Nurses After Hurricane Harvey

Kim Dean, bottom, center.

It takes hardship to realize the gifts in your life and hardship takes on many different forms. We may lose a home to a fire or a flood, a loved one to accident or illness, or we may, ourselves, be suffering from illness. The story of those affected by Hurricane Harvey, in Texas, is one we’ve heard about on a national level. For Orange Regional Medical Center Clinical Data Analyst, Kim Dean, BSN, RN, this news hit hard and at moment’s notice, she joined more than 50 nurses and doctors from the Tri-State area and departed Teterboro Airport, on August 31, to relieve staff at Bay Area Regional Medical Center in Webster, Texas. The trip was coordinated by the New Jersey Hospital Association. Staff at Bay Area Regional had been working around the clock in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. Kim knew she needed to head to Texas. For the next few days, Kim took paid time off from Orange Regional and worked 12-hour nursing shifts in the Emergency Department at Bay Area Regional Medical Center and, when she wasn’t at the hospital, she volunteered to help clean up the homes of staff that had not been able to do so. “Understanding the hardship, I wanted to relieve the nurses,” Kim said. “I’m a single mom who worked very

hard to buy my own home and (couldn’t imagine having no control over what was happening to my home). There was so much support from the community. People were making food for us and others and cleaning homes of people they didn’t know. Everyone was so appreciative and the staff was wonderful.” The storm dropped more than 50 inches of rain on the Houston area, leaving thousands of people displaced and living in shelters. “We were greeted with such hospitality by the people of Texas. They were so grateful we were there to help,” Kim added. She and the other nurses who volunteered were impressed by the perseverance of the Texas residents. They saw people helping others, from walking through the floodwaters to cleaning up other homes and debris. After a long weekend, Kim arrived back home but said her work won’t end there. She acknowledged that, while she may not get to provide relief for the other hurricanes that happened subsequently, she knew she would continue to volunteer each year in some capacity. “It helps put your life in perspective,” Kim said of her experience. “All these people lost things, but they still had their community and each other.” -4-

of Giving Orange Regional Among Hospitals To Donate Millions To Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Efforts Orange Regional is among many hospitals that have made donations to “New York Healthcare’s Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Fund.” A fund established by Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) and the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) to assist hospitals, their health care workers, and their families in Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands that were impacted by recent hurricanes raised $5 million in its first day. The New York Healthcare’s Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief Fund is a vehicle for New York’s hospital community to show its support for frontline caregivers and their families who have suffered significant losses. Orange Regional donated a generous $10,000 to the Fund. The goal of the Fund is to raise at least $10 million.

On December 6, the Middletown Elks visited Orange Regional to make a generous donation of teddy bears to the pediatric department for the 25th year in a row. Child Life Program Coordinator, Michelle Ferguson, and Administrator of Emergency Services, Debora Snyder, accepted the gifts on the hospital’s behalf. Guest Services representatives Kathleen Fayol and Carol Menendez joined in the fun to take pictures with Santa. We look forward to their visit again next year!

Instead of conducting its annual Secret Santa this year, the Department of Graduate Medical Education adopted a family through Minisink Cares. The family consisted of a four-year-old girl, and two boys ages eight and nine. Staff collected everything for the children from snow pants to action figures, and one team member bought an IHOP and Shoprite gift card for the single mom of the children. -5-

Orange Regional Holds Veterans Day Tribute Permanent Employee Veterans Display Unveiled

From L to R: Orange Regional Medical Center President & CEO, Scott Batulis, presented a special award to Food and Nutrition Services employee, Larry Wilson, for his service in the United States Army.

On November 10, during a Veteran’s Day celebration honoring employees, volunteers and patients who served our country in the United States Armed Services, all veterans in attendance were proudly asked to unveil a permanent employee veterans display, entitled the “Hallway of Heroes,” which is now located on the ground floor of the hospital.

In honor of Veteran’s Day, Orange Regional held a special tribute and unveiled a permanent employee veteran’s display, entitled the “Hallway of Heroes,” on the ground floor of the hospital. The display showcases Orange Regional employees who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces. More than 50 photos of veterans and their biographies are displayed in the “Hallway of Heroes.” Among those who attended to help honor the history of Veterans Day and importance of the Armed Forces were the Military Services Branch and distinguished guests Steve Neuhaus, Orange County Executive; Barry Schipper, of the Town Of Wallkill American Legion 1181; Dominic Caccioppoli, ORMC Security Armed Guard and Allan Mack, retired Army pilot and Orange County Deputy Commissioner of Emergency Management. President & CEO, Scott Batulis, also presented a special award to Food and Nutrition Services employee, Larry Wilson, for his service in the United States Army.

Falls Prevention Day Rounding On October 25, Orange Regional’s Falls Prevention Day, members of the Falls Prevention Task Force rounded to all units, throughout the hospital, educating and reinforcing the importance of falls prevention for all of our patients. Four care units were recognized for having no falls or for being fall free for more than 30 days. Specifically, the CDA for greater than two months, 5N for greater than one month, 3 South for greater than two months and 2 South for greater than three months! The Falls Task Force plans on rounding like this every quarter to reinforce falls prevention and to recognize the care units that are top performers in patient safety related to falls prevention.

People-Centered Communication

Why is People-Centered Communication needed? At Orange Regional, this type of effective communication places the other party, whether a patient or staff member, at the center; meeting them where they are. It employs empathy and it seeks understanding.

Taking Time to RELATESM The purpose of using the RELATESM model for People-Centered Communication is to address a patient’s emotional and clinical needs as well as emotional needs amongst staff. It is often used to effectively communicate the importance of safety with patients while providing comfort; reducing anxiety, stress and fear and ensuring dignity.

1. Our first step is to reassure. When you reassure:

• Project a professional image • Seek and maintain eye contact • Acknowledge patient and/or staff member by name

• Introduce yourself by name, title and experience

• Manage up 2. Our second step is to explain. When you explain:

• Use clear terms to communicate what you are doing and why

• How long it will take • Anticipated wait times, if applicable • Manage expectations

Each month, we will highlight key actions within the RELATESM model. 3. Our third step is to listen.

• Sit down, when appropriate. • Actively listen for questions and concerns. • Pay attention to verbal and non-verbal cues. • Ask clarifying questions. • Empathize with feelings in words and through touch. 4. Our fourth step is to answer.

• Summarize what the person/patient says. • Answer questions. • Address concerns. • Check for understanding (Use “teach back,” if appropriate).

Our consistent use of the RELATESM model for communication is expected with every patient, every family, and each other, every time. Participation is mandatory. Please register for People-Centered Communication training through HealthStream or contact Manager of Organizational Development and Learning, Naomi Lippin, at 333-0228 or nlippin@ghvhs.org.

Feel Good Concert Series The Zylophone singers and musicians were a BIG hit as they performed holiday favorites as part of Orange Regional's ongoing Feel Good Concert Series Program. The duo Bev and Frank have been singing together for over 20 years as part of the Middletown Carole and we were lucky to have them join us in for our concert series. They perform songs across all genres including classical, americana, and perfect for this time of year, holiday songs. Jeff Krolick and Joanna Gass began performing together back in 1988. Their favorite genres to cover are jazz, Broadway, pop and oldies.
