Update for Catskill Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers

A Message From Our Leader Congratulations to our Radiology Department for bringing a new state-of-the-art CT scanner on-line for our patients at the Harris campus! This new scanner has all of the latest technology including radiation dose-reduction and image enhancements for the Radiologists. Having this second CT scanner means that we will likely never have to go on CT diversion again for EMS, ensuring we can reliably care for some of the most acutely ill patients presenting in our Emergency Department.

We can all feel the excitement in the air as the long awaited grand opening of the Resorts World Casino took place ahead of schedule on February 8! This project has brought significant economic development to our county and has created over 1,000 jobs for our community. We have started seeing patients coming to our Emergency Department who may have had a health issue while spending time in the area and patronizing the casino. We welcome these patients and understand that they may be anxious while having a health-related event away from their own hometown hospital.
While it appears that the most significant influenza-related patient visits may have peaked, we continue to see many flu patients coming to our Emergency Department and the Catskill Regional Medical Group’s Urgent Care in Monticello. Please continue to take care of yourselves and each other through proper hand-washing, and living a healthy lifestyle including nutrition, exercise and plenty of sleep. Hospital leadership, clinicians, board members and supporters gathered at Catskill Regional Medical Center recently to celebrate the addition of a new Computerized Tomography (CT) system. This unique CT utilizes state-of-the-art technology to produce the most advanced diagnostic images in Computerized Tomography exams available today. The technology supports all medical departments at Catskill Regional including the emergency department, oncology, neurology, orthopedics, and cardiology.

Update Congratulations We are very pleased to announce that Orange Regional Medical Group Urgent Care and Catskill Regional Medical Group Urgent Care have both been awarded the Certified Urgent Care Center Category 2 designation by the Urgent Care Association of America (UCAOA) as part of the 2018 Q1 term! They are part of a select few around the country that have met all of UCAOA's nationally-standardized criteria.

People-Centered Communication Why is People-Centered Communication needed? At Catskill Regional, this type of effective communication places the other party, whether a patient or staff member, at the center; meeting them where they are. It employs empathy and it seeks understanding. Taking Time to RELATESM The purpose of using the RELATESM model for People-Centered Communication is to address a patient’s emotional and clinical needs as well as emotional needs amongst staff. It is often used to effectively communicate the importance of safety with patients while providing comfort, ensuring dignity and reducing anxiety, stress and fear.
1. Our first step is to reassure. • Project a professional image. • Seek and maintain eye contact. • Acknowledge patient and/or staff member by name. • Introduce yourself by name, title and experience. • Manage up. 2. Our second step is to explain. • Use clear terms to communicate what you are doing and why. • How long it will take. • Anticipated wait times, if applicable. • Manage expectations. 3. Our third step is to listen. • Sit down, when appropriate. • Actively listen for questions and concerns. • Pay attention to verbal and non-verbal cues. • Ask clarifying questions. • Empathize with feelings in words and through touch. 4. Our fourth step is to answer. • Summarize what the person/patient says. • Answer questions. • Address concerns. • Check for understanding (Use “teach back,” if appropriate).
Each month, we will highlight key actions within the RELATESM model. 5. Our fifth step is to take action. • Perform appropriate tasks. • Narrate your process of care. • Keep the person/patient informed. • Ensure safety. • Provide next steps. 6. Our six and final step is to express appreciation. • Offer additional support and care. • Provide information about the next healthcare provider, if applicable. • Say “thank you”.

FREE EMPLOYEE WELLNESS CLASS The Live Well, Be Well Program is proud to offer a free yoga class to our employees. No experience needed! Yoga practice can include many different aspects, such as meditation, exercises, stretching and breathing. Benefits have been found to have a positive effect on overall health such as improved flexibility and decreased stress. While there are many forms of yoga, all share the same common goal: achieving “oneness” with the self, and improved mental and physical health.
Life-Savers
In October 2017, Lee Ann Hubbert and Diana Duffy (both RN's at the Callicoon division) were involved in a pre-hospital cardiac arrest at a local store which resulted in saving the patient’s life. All the providers involved with the call were recognized at the Upper Delaware Ambulance Corps dinner. Congratulations ladies. It’s an honor to work with you.

Universalists Honor RISE Program

The Upper Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship celebrated recipients of funds from the Bud Rue Campaign for Social Justice in January at the Berlin Township Community Center. Representatives from Wayne County Habitat for Humanity, Victims Intervention Program (VIP) and Rape, Intervention, Services and Education of Sullivan County (RISE) spoke about the services their organizations provide for the community and checks from the proceeds of the annual fundraiser were presented to each group.
