An award-winning newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers
From The President & CEO
During this holiday season, I am especially thankful for everyone at Orange Regional who goes above and beyond to provide the highest possible quality care for our patients. We recently dealt with a serious problem that affected our sterilization equipment. When the situation was discovered, we immediately took all actions to ensure that patients were safe and unaffected. Stopping the sterilization process at Orange Regional limited our surgery schedule and caused some concern, but we made the right decisions for the right reasons; which is part of our values and our ethical culture. I am very proud of how we handled this complex problem and all the people who worked tirelessly to keep us going at limited capacity and ultimately back to full steam. We are very grateful for the excellent cooperation and understanding we received from our patients and surgeons who had to reschedule surgery. We greatly appreciate Catskill Regional Medical Center and their Sterilization Department for helping us maintain a limited surgery schedule. And, a very special thank you and shout-out goes to leaders and staff of the Sterilization, Perioperative and Facilities Departments. Many worked day and night, including weekends, until our sterilization process was working to perfection. I think this was a great reminder of the awesome responsibility we have to care for patients and the complexity and skill required from all people throughout the organization to get it done. Happy Holidays to you and your families! Sincerely, Scott Batulis, President & CEO

What is a Hospitalist? Hospitalists are Board-certified internists who devote their practice to the care of hospitalized patients. These dedicated physicians care for patients who have been admitted to the hospital by their primary care doctors, emergency room doctors or other specialty physicians. Mirroring the successful ORMG hospitalist program, CRMG hospitalists work in tandem with a patient's primary care physician, closely coordinating most aspects of their inpatient care.

Foundation Announces “Footprints into the Future” Baby Wall The Orange Regional Foundation announced a unique way to celebrate the birth of a baby at our hospital. The creation of the “Footprints Into The Future” donor wall provides an opportunity for friends and family to purchase blue and pink tiles that are installed on the wall with the name of their infant, date of birth and the names of the donor. The wall is located in a high visibility area in the Rowley Family Birthing Center where parents and families enter and exit. The wall is also close to new moms and infants who stay in the nursery or the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It is adorned with positive and inspiration quotes by Henry David Thoreau, Paul Coehlo and Dr. Seuss about the importance of children in our lives. To order a tile, please visit www.ormc.org/footprintswall. 6

Nurse Board Certification and Degree Fair
The first annual Orange Regional Nurse Board Certification and Degree Fair was held on October 3. Thanks to the Shared Governance Professional Affairs and Interdisciplinary Education Committees, 273 community members and staff signed in to learn and share with their colleagues about Nurse Board Certification and advancing their education/degree from 11 colleges. As a Magnet organization, Orange Regional strives to achieve nursing excellence and high quality care while improving patient outcomes. This is why we highly encourage all of our nurses to earn their higher education degrees.
Celebrating Our Pulmonary Rehabilitation Graduates Respiratory Care Week was recently celebrated at Orange Regional by recognizing our first pulmonary rehabilitation patients who graduated from the program, Luis Aponte Jr. and Bruce Tolen. They worked hard and made much improvement throughout their outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation program. The outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program helps people who have chronic pulmonary disease improve their quality of life. Our specialists work with patients to improve endurance and reduce risk of medical complications from worsening lung disease. Each of our patients have completed 7 weeks of Pulmonary Rehab: 3 days each week. Each session, they exercised for 75 minutes and participated in many educational sessions to help keep their chronic disease stable. To learn more, visit www.ormc.org/PulmRehab. 7
