CONNECTIONS June 2019
An award-winning newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers
From The President & CEO Orange Regional is continually transforming into a remarkable teaching hospital through our Graduate Medical Education Program. We are proud to offer accredited residency programs in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry and Transitional Year Internship. On June 21, 2019, we graduated 32 Residents. We had the first graduating class for Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, as well as graduates from Family Medicine and Transitional Year. Congratulations to all the graduates. Special congratulations are extended to Dr. Alicia Olowu, Dr. Joshua Layher and Dr. Eric Jarmon, who will be joining our Medical Group in July. Our transformation continues with the formal announcement of our Level II Trauma designation from the American College of Surgeons. We have been working toward becoming a Level II Trauma Center for the past seven years and it has been a challenging journey. My sincere thanks to Dr. Mohammad Siddiqui, Trauma Program and Acute Care Surgery Medical Director; Greg Geisler, Trauma Administrator and all our physicians and staff for their hard work to make this program a great success! Trauma is a complicated, life-saving program requiring highly specialized physicians and staff who provide specialized medical services and resources to patients suffering from traumatic injuries. In 2018, we treated over 2,500 patients in our Trauma Program. The most common causes of injury that bring patients to trauma centers are falls, motor vehicle crashes and gunshot wounds. These events cause life-threatening injuries in multiple areas of the body and treatment at trauma centers has been scientifically proven to reduce the likelihood of death or permanent disability to injured patients. Our Level II Trauma designation means patients, and their families, who require highly specialized care due to tragic events, have a likelier chance of being cared for at our hospital instead of being transferred to other facilities farther away. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association has once again recognized Orange Regional for our outstanding stroke care. This year’s designation, Stroke Gold Plus & Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite PLUS Award, is more notable than our previous years’ honors. Our ability to meet specific quality measures and our commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence has earned us a more prestigious recognition. The care of stroke patients is one of the most important services we provide to our community. I'm very impressed with the high level of excellence we have achieved and congratulate you all on a job well done! I wish everyone a safe and healthy summer. Sincerely,
Scott Batulis, President & CEO
Our latest recipient of the BEE (Be Exceptional Everyday) Award was Jennifer Krause. Jennifer is a Surgical Services Assistant who goes above and beyond for patients and their families on a daily basis. The Orange Regional Rewards and Recognition Committee started the BEE program as a way to honor our employees, who are exceptional every day and go above and beyond their expected role in providing service. Each month, the Committee reviews nominations received and presents one BEE award to an exceptional staff member. The nominations of all recipients throughout the year are then reviewed by the Committee and one recipient is named as BEE of the Year. To make a nomination, email BEEAward@ghvhs.org.
