An award-winning newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers
From the President & CEO The healthcare industry is challenged every day to improve quality, reduce harm, improve access, eliminate waste and lower costs. As a major healthcare provider in our community, we face the same challenges. Incorporating innovation into our daily tasks will have an impact on these challenges, ultimately helping to deliver an exceptional patient experience. Innovation is the process of turning an idea, which can be generated by anyone, into a more simplistic and convenient service that creates enhanced value for our patients and staff members. When innovated ideas are applied, they help to satisfy the needs and expectations of everyone. Innovation isn’t just advances in technology. Innovation encompasses becoming more efficient at what we do as a System, using information to identify areas of improvement and becoming more streamlined and consistent in our delivery of quality care. Often, new ways of conducting business come from small ideas that have a big impact.
I am pleased to announce that Orange Regional is a recipient of Healthgrades' 2019 Obstetrics & Gynecology Excellence Award™, 2019 Labor & Delivery Excellence Award™ and the 2019 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award™. Additionally, we received 5-star recognition for Gynecologic Procedures, Hysterectomy, C-Section Delivery and Vaginal Delivery. These achievements recognize our hospital for exceptional clinical outcomes while caring for women during labor and immediately after delivery of their newborn, as well as women undergoing gynecologic procedures and surgery. These outstanding recognitions have placed Orange Regional as the only hospital in New York State to be recognized with the 2019 Labor & Delivery Excellence Award™, Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award™, the Obstetrics & Gynecology Excellence Award™ and a 5-star in every women’s care category. My sincere thanks and appreciation to our physicians, nurses and all staff who worked so hard to earn these outstanding achievements.
An estimated 60% of breakthrough ideas come directly from front I wish you and your family a happy and safe school year! line staff. We want to hear your ideas. Submit them via email to innovation@ghvhs.org, or call 845-333-IDEA (4332) or visit our Sincerely, Intranet and look for the innovation button and click on ‘submit new idea’. Scott Batulis, President & CEO
Our latest recipient of the BEE (Be Exceptional Everyday) Award was Nicholas Heitzmann. Thank you, Nicholas, for continuously providing excellent service amongst our staff and visitors. The Orange Regional Rewards and Recognition Committee started the BEE program as a way to honor our employees, who are exceptional every day and go above and beyond their expected role in providing service. Each month, the Committee reviews nominations received and presents one BEE award to an exceptional staff member. The nominations of all recipients throughout the year are then reviewed by the Committee and one recipient is named as BEE of the Year. To make a nomination, email BEEAward@ghvhs.org.

Director of Diagnostic Imaging, Joyce Timko, MBA, CRA, RT(R)(CT)(M), was asked to speak at the National Association for Medical Imaging Management’s (AHRA) 2019 Annual Meeting in July. While at the meeting, Joyce shared her experience leading Orange Regional Medical Center through its journey to earn the American College of Radiology’s (ACR) Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence (DICOE) designation in 2018. “Our competitors can’t say they are a DICOE,” Joyce said in her presentation. “They may have a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, they may be certified by the ACR, but they are not a DICOE. They are not the best of the best. We’re the best of the best.” Noting that it took more than two years to gain DICOE designation, Joyce explained “It was worth the effort as ORMC is now a leader in diagnostic imaging.” She can be reached at jtimko@ghvhs.org. 3

Prevent T2 Class Learns the Benefits of Our Fitness Trail Board of Directors Member Ginny Rizzo and her daughter, Stacy Cameron, of Cameron Fitness, showed our Prevent T2 (Type 2 Diabetes) class how to safely and confidently utilize the ORMC Fitness Trail! Prevent T2 participants are involved in a year-long program that promotes modest weight loss (5%-7% of current weight, if overweight or obese) and increased physical activity through lifestyle changes. The program meets regularly at the ORMC Community Health Education Center with Lifestyle Coaches, Amanda Langseder and Shelly Dehaan. Participants are coached in self-efficacy, physical activity and diet. Experiences are planned for the classes like a grocery store tour with a ShopRite dietitian as well as this interactive experience on the fitness trail. Nearly all participants stated that they felt more comfortable coming to utilize the ORMC Fitness Trail now that they had experienced it as a group! If you have any questions, please contact Director of Community Health, Amanda Langseder, MSOL, CLC, at alangseder@ghvhs.org.
How Our Patients Can Contribute to the Safety and Quality of Their Care Everyone has a role in making healthcare safe, including our patients. We can encourage them to make their care safer by asking them to stay active, involved and informed. Research shows that patients who take part in decisions about their own healthcare are more likely to get better faster. To help prevent healthcare mistakes, we should urge them to SPEAK UP with questions and concerns, if something doesn’t seem right to them and for additional education on their ailments and treatments. Our patients should always be asked to participate in all decisions about their treatment, as they are the center of the healthcare team. Patients and physicians should agree on exactly what will be done during each step of treatment. They should be advised to keep copies of their medical records from other hospitalizations and to share them with us so that we have best information about their health histories. Let patients know it’s ok for them to ask for a second opinion — we should always support their requests because the more information they have about all the kinds of treatment available, the better they will feel about the decisions they make. And last, but certainly not least, patients should talk to their health providers and families about their wishes regarding resuscitation and other life-saving actions during an emergency situation. For more information on Culture of Safety, contact Quality Data Specialist, Katie Haun, at 333-1294 or khaun@ghvhs.org.

Global Latch On
On August 2, Orange Regional staff members and local mothers gathered in the Healing Garden to participate in the “Global Big Latch On” event, celebrating National Breastfeeding Awareness Month. Twelve mothers, their children, community partners from Woman, Infants and Children (WIC) and AMEDA Breast Pump attended the special event to recognize the importance of breastfeeding.
Did You Know… • Collectively the ORMC volunteers were in the workforce for almost 2,400 years!
• 25% of our volunteers were teachers - elementary through college level. • 19% of the volunteers were in healthcare, with the majority being Registered Nurses.
• 10% of ORMC Volunteers worked in various capacities in the Social Services sector.
• On average, the ORMC volunteers give 650 hours a week in service to the hospital.
In an effort to better serve the volunteer needs at ORMC and utilize the experience of our volunteers more effectively, we are beginning a new outreach effort. A Needs Assessment was distributed to all departments to assist in determining the need for volunteers, how they can be utilized, special projects and upcoming events. This tool will allow Volunteer Services to be as responsive as possible to your short and long-term needs and to target our recruitment and training efforts. For more information on how you can utilize Volunteer Services or for more information on the Needs Assessment, contact Volunteer Services Manager, Maureen Roche, at 333-0213 or mroche1@ghvhs.org. 7
