Patient Safety Corner How our patients can contribute to the safety and quality of their care Everyone has a role in making healthcare safe, including our patients. We can encourage them to make their care safer by asking them to stay active, involved and informed. We also need to encourage our patients to not delay their healthcare for any reason. Garnet Health facilities are clean, sanitized and safe for our patients to schedule their doctor appointments and outpatient tests, book their elective surgeries that they may have put off or visit us for urgent or emergent care. Research shows that patients who take care of themselves and participate in decisions about their healthcare are more likely to be healthier and/or get better faster. We should urge them to SPEAK UP about questions and concerns and request additional education about ailments and treatments. Our patients should always be asked to participate in all decisions about their treatment. Patients and physicians should agree on exactly what will be done during each step of treatment. Patients should be encouraged to use MyChart and keep their medical records from other hospitalizations to share with us to ensure we have the best information about their health history. Please also let patients know it is OK for them to request a second opinion. We should always support these requests because the more information they have about available treatments, the better they will feel about their healthcare decisions. And last, but certainly not least, patients should talk to their health providers and families about their wishes regarding resuscitation and other life-saving actions during an emergency. For more information on our Culture of Safety, contact Quality Data Specialist Katie Haun at 333-1294 or khaun@garnethealth.org. 2
COVID-19 Safety and Information Coronavirus cases continue to increase in other parts of the nation, and vigilance is still critical. That’s why social distancing, diligent hand hygiene and mask use are mandatory in Garnet Health facilities. We have done a great job caring for our community and decreasing local COVID-19 statistics, but we must remember that the risk is still present. What COVID-19 employee symptom attestation means for you: Daily COVID-19 employee symptom attestation is now required of employees upon arrival to work to ensure the safety of our health system and community. An attestation is evidence or proof of something. If you come to work and you are not well enough to swipe in for your shift, you must return to your vehicle and call Occupational Health during the day shift, Monday to Friday, or the Nursing Supervisor’s office on other shifts or weekends. A message is now displayed on timeclocks as a reminder. It says to not swipe in if you exhibit any of the following symptoms: • Fever • Chills • Cough, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing • Fatigue • Muscle or body ache • Headache • New loss of taste or smell • Sore throat • Congestion or runny nose • Nausea, vomiting • Diarrhea By swiping in, you attest to the fact that you are NOT ill and do not have any of the symptoms above. Thank you for your assistance in keeping us all healthy and safe. If you have any questions, contact Senior Administrator, Human Resources/ Payroll Operations Christine Goodhart at 333-7176 or your Human Resource Business Partner.

Breastfeeding Awareness Month Helping To Educate Our Moms August is National and World Breastfeeding Awareness Month, and here at Garnet Health, Jennifer LansiquotDallas, Community Health Coordinator and Lactation Specialist, and Rene Fisher, Lactation Services Coordinator, educate mothers across our System on why breast milk is best when it comes to feeding a baby, especially during the first year of life. “Breastfeeding creates a special, close, emotional bond; provides essential, balanced nutrients; is cost-effective; and offers short- and long-term health benefits for both babies and mothers,” Jennifer explains. “A mother’s breast milk provides protection that is specific to her baby and can change to meet her baby’s needs,” Rene added. “Because breast milk contains hormones and cells that fight germs, breastfeeding helps protect infants from many health problems, including respiratory illness, ear infections, gastrointestinal disease, asthma, obesity and allergies. As an added bonus for mothers, breastfeeding is linked to lower rates of breast cancer and other illnesses, and aids in post-pregnancy weight loss.”
Community Health Coordinator and Lactation Specialist Jennifer Lansiquot-Dallas.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), exclusively breastfeeding during the first six months provides all the nutrition an infant needs. The AAP recommends that mothers breastfeed exclusively for about the first six months, followed by breastfeeding combined with gradually introducing other foods until at least 12 months of age, and continuing as long as mother and baby wish to breastfeed. For more information on breastfeeding and lactation services, contact Jennifer at jlansiquot@garnethealth.org or Rene at rfisher@garnethealth.org. Lactation Services Coordinator Rene Fisher.

New Technology Improves Prostate Cancer Diagnosis Garnet Health Medical Center’s technology has taken an important step forward with the introduction of the UroNav Fusion Biopsy System. The system enhances the ability to diagnose and treat prostate cancer earlier. UroNav combines MRI images of the prostate with ultrasoundguided 3-D images in real time. That creates a precise view of the prostate and any abnormal lesions that may or may not be cancerous. “We can identify suspicious areas easier, and then target them for biopsy,” said Garnet Health Doctors Urologist Samuel Abourbih, MD, who

leads the prostate biopsy program at Garnet Health Medical Center. “The quality of this imaging enables us to get the most accurate results, and guide the most effective treatment plan if cancer is found.” “We are committed to using the latest innovations in technology to provide our patients with the highest quality of care,” said Garnet Health Doctors President Gerard Galarneau, MD. “The UroNav Fusion Biopsy System allows urologists to identify, target and diagnose prostate lesions quickly and with precision.”
