CONNECTIONS May 2019
An award-winning newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers
From The President & CEO As we approached our celebration of Hospital Week and Nurses Week earlier this month, we found ourselves doing what these annual recognition weeks are all about - pulling together to deliver exceptional healthcare no matter what circumstances prevail. Our recent flooding event, due to a burst pipe, was a significant and unfortunate event that illustrated outstanding teamwork in the moment, as well as remarkable dedication in continuing to deliver quality patient care while damaged areas were being restored. The fast and furious creative thinking of many staff used to protect critical equipment was impressive and Command Center leadership was excellent. A special thank you to Facilities, EVS, Laboratory, Same Day Surgery, Clinical Decision Area, Surgery, Endoscopy and all staff from multiple areas who acted quickly to avoid further damage and worked day and night to restore areas as quickly as possible. I am grateful all patients and employees were safe and I am proud to work with such an astounding team!
We did it AGAIN! 3rd Year in a Row!
My sincere thanks goes beyond just one event. We honored and thanked many employees at our annual Employee Service Awards Dinner. This year we extended special congratulations to Geraldine Hughes as she celebrated 45 years of service. We also congratulated our 2018 Employee of the Year, Dax Kruger. Our Medical Staff and Board of Directors honored Dr. John Ferguson, MD with the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award and Dr. Gilbert Nazareno, MD with the 2019 Leadership Award. Outstanding nurses from Orange Regional represented our organization in May at the annual 1199 SEIU Gala held at the Brooklyn Bridge Marriot. Congratulations to the following nurses who were nominated: Paula McLaughlin – Operating Room, Novice; Steven Bowley – Inpatient Rehabilitation, Preceptor; Debra Beakes – Administrator of Medical Services, Nurse Leader; and Alexandra Monell – Infusion Therapy, Nurse of Distinction. Additionally, Karen Driscoll, RN from 2 North made the Top 20 in Hudson Valley Magazine’s Annual Excellence in Nursing Awards. June Maniaci, RN from 4 East was also honored at this event. I’m proud to announce that we have received the 2019 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ from Healthgrades® for the third consecutive year. It is because of our collective commitment to our patients that this recognition continues to place us in the top 5% nationwide for patient safety. Thank you for all you do! I hope you and your families have a safe and enjoyable summer! Sincerely,
Orange Regional Medical Center is a recipient of the Healthgrades® 2019 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ for the 3rd consecutive year. This designation recognizes superior performance of hospitals that have prevented the occurrence of serious, potentially avoidable complications for patients during hospital stays. The distinction places Orange Regional among the top 5 percent of all short-term acute care hospitals reporting patient safety data for its excellent performance as evaluated by Healthgrades®. Congratulations to us!
Scott Batulis, President & CEO

What is High Reliability? As we strive to reach High Reliability Organization (HRO) status, we should make safety our number one priority. HROs focus on safety as a means to exposing needed improvements or enhancements in the system. High Reliability means getting things right each and every time by: • Building and sustaining a culture that places safety first. • Preventing failure – in processes, policies, technology and with people. • Reducing the probability that errors will occur with a focus on attention to detail and clear communication. High Reliability: Self-Check Using STAR
Stop
ause for 1 to 2 seconds to focus P attention on the task at hand
Think Consider the action you're about to take
Act Concentrate and carry out the task Review Check to make sure that the task was done correctly and that you got the correct results
Stop is the most important step. It gives your brain a chance to catch up with what your hands are getting ready to do.
Conditions that increase the chance you will experience an unintended error when performing a familiar, routine task:
• Working under time pressure
• Doing multiple things at the same time
• Distractions • Interruptions
STAR reduces your chances of making an unintended mental slip or lapse by more than 10 TIMES… 3
• Boredom • Mental or physical exhausion
• Disorientation • Just not paying attention
Always use STAR as part of your day - its about adding intention when going from thought to action!
