From the President & CEO The growing demand for our Emergency Department (ED) services, significant patient volume increase, and the need to provide quality acute care in our recently designated Level II Adult Trauma Center, has led us to move forward with the expansion of our ED. We have outgrown our current space even with the opening of a new Observation Unit and increased Urgent Care services which help us provide quality emergency services to our community.

This expansion will be on the east and north sides of the ED and will add approximately 52 new treatment bays. A free 600-space employee parking garage will also be constructed on the east side of the expanded ED to provide additional parking spaces for patients and visitors. The existing helipad will be relocated nearby. By the end of this year, we hope to have a finalized

This growth is indicative of our role as a trusted healthcare leader, but it also means we need more space to do what we do best. Culture of Safety In August, many employees took the annual Culture of Safety Survey which had great participation once again. Unit-based survey results have also been distributed and these results will help guide teams to action plans based upon the perceived culture of safety on their unit.

Overall, GHVHS staff gave a patient safety grade of B. We had 1,550 survey responses, which is a 25% increase from 2018. Thank you for your participation. Here are some suggested ways to move forward.

Next Steps: • Review your unit results: – Where are your unit’s strengths and weaknesses?

– What are the themes identified?

• Correlate results with patient experience and employee engagement results.

• Identify action items.

Welcome New Employees Outpatient Rehabilitation Physical Therapist, Janus Musico PT, DPT, has been named a Board-certified clinical specialist in orthopedics from the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS). ABPTS created the specialization process to provide formal recognition for physical therapists with advanced clinical knowledge and skills in a specific area of practice through national examinations. Orange Regional has once again earned the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives 2019 HealthCare’s Most Wired recognition. The Most Wired program conducts an annual survey to assess how effectively healthcare organizations apply core and advanced technologies into their clinical and business programs to improve health and care in their communities.

A total of 16,168 organizations were represented in the 2019 Most Wired program, which this year included three separate surveys: domestic, ambulatory and international. The surveys assessed the adoption, integration and impact of technologies in healthcare organizations at all stages of development, from early development to industry leading.

Each participating organization received a customized benchmarking report, an overall score and scores for individual levels in eight segments: infrastructure; security; business/disaster recovery; administrative/supply chain; analytics/data management; interoperability/population health; patient engagement and clinical quality/safety. Participants can use the report and scores to identify strengths and opportunities for improvement. Outpatient Physical Rehabilitation Staff

Our physical rehabilitation staff celebrated National Rehabilitation Week, October 17 through October 23. Physical rehabilitation services include inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation, inpatient acute care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech language pathology and physiatry. Collectively, the care team includes the physiatrists, consulting physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nursing assistants, speech pathologists, case managers, neuropsychology, volunteers, physical therapists, dieticians, environmental services, occupational therapists, pharmacy, respiratory and other professional and support staff, all of whom put patients and their family members first.

Diabetes Champions Graduate

The Dunkelman Diabetes Center announced the graduation of the sixteenth class of Diabetes Champions.

The course, now presented yearly, was first offered in 2013 and has graduated 140 Diabetes Champions. Course offerings include topics such as diabetes pathophysiology and diagnosis, oral and injectable medications, acute and chronic complications, life with diabetes and patient education.

This year’s guest speakers included diabetes specialists and community members who live with diabetes each day. There was an opportunity to wear an insulin pump and to learn to calculate and adjust insulin doses.

Graduates often report they are better prepared to educate and assess the needs of persons with diabetes and act as mentors for other staff members caring for this increasing patient population.

Antoinette Karellas, Care Coordinator for Orange Regional Medical Group, was awarded Orange Regional’s BEE Award for “Being Exceptional Everyday.”

She goes above and beyond by reaching out to patients in need of care, and spends quality time over the phone or in her office with them. Antoinette’s critical thinking skills are sharp. She always does what’s right when it comes to patients and her fellow staff members. She sees others’ perspectives before making any judgments, has a kind heart and open ears. Thank you, Antoinette.

Orange Regional’s Be Exceptional Everyday (BEE) Award recognizes and celebrates a non-nurse care team member for providing extraordinary, compassionate care. Working in conjunction with the DAISY award, which honors nurses for exemplifying compassionate and empathetic care to patients, the BEE award recognizes additional members of the patient care team. Organ Donor Enrollment Day

Organ Donor Enrollment Day took place on October 10. On this day, individuals, teams and organizations volunteer their time to enroll organ donors. Every completed enrollment form can help save the lives of up to eight people. Generous Hospital staff helped recruit organ donors at recruitment stations, located in the conference center lobby. Thanks to this effort, 39 people signed up to become organ donors.

Nurse Certification and Degree Fair

Hosted by the Shared Governance Nursing Professional Excellence and Interdisciplinary Education Committees, the second annual nurse certification and degree fair was held on October 2.

Multiple universities were in attendance to discuss advanced degree programs. Thank you to all who participated.

Meet Our Nursing Professional Development Department Susanne Neenan, MSN, RN-BC is a Nursing Professional Development Practitioner for the medical patient care units. Susanne functions as the coordinator of over 240 Registered Nurse New Graduate Cohort and New Employee RN Orientation Programs.

She provides monthly nursing preceptor and development classes and coordinates all pre-hire simulations with Human Resources and the Nursing Professional Development team. She is an electronic Medical Orders for LifeSustaining Treatment (eMOLST) Administrator and has been trained as an Easy Movie user, which provides video for interdisciplinary learning, development and orientation.

Suzanne K. Peller, MEd, BSN, RN is an Administrator of Nursing Professional Development who works with a team of Nursing Professional Development Practitioners. Together, they fulfill the Association of Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) roles of learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion for scientific inquiry, advocate for NPD specialty and partner for practice transitions in order to promote excellence in clinical nursing practice within the System.

Suzanne and her team are working together to integrate the ANPD Nursing Professional Development Practice Model – a Systems Model designed to support the scope of practice of the NPD Practitioner and the achievement of the desired outcomes of NPD practice with the ultimate goals of protection of the public and optimal care.

Suzanne holds a Master’s Degree in Nursing Education from Teacher’s College, Columbia University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from St. Peter’s College.

Susanne is Board-certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center in Medical-Surgical Nursing. She received an Associate’s Degree from Orange County Community College, Bachelor’s Degree from Dominican College and Master’s Degree from Walden University.

Ebony M. Samuel-Bakpessi, MSN-Ed, RN-BC, NPD is a Nursing Professional Development Specialist/ Nurse Scientist who works with nurses and other interdisciplinary healthcare professionals to ensure patient safety, best practices, supportive research, evidence-based practice and nursing professional development opportunities.

Peggy Ensslin, MSN-Ed, MBA, RN-BC, CEN is a Nursing Professional Development Practitioner for the Emergency Department, Clinical Decision Area and Behavioral Health Access Center and Unit. Peggy is the Lead Nurse Planner for continuing education through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Peggy coordinates the Nursing Assistants and Tech New Employee Orientation. She has managed the Emergency Nursing New Graduate Residency program and oversees the Simulation Lab.

Ebony has been a nurse for 13 years in Medical-Surgical Nursing, Neonatal Intensive Care Nursing and Nursing Education. A nurse educator for seven years, she has taught new nurses and offered support to assist in their practice and achievement of goals. Ebony is Boardcertified in Nursing Professional Development through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Ebony received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and Ramapo College of New Jersey and Master of Science degree in Nursing from Ramapo College of New Jersey.

Peggy is Board-certified in Medical-Surgical Nursing, Emergency Nursing and Professional Development. She holds a Post-graduate certificate in Nursing Education from Rutgers University and a Certificate in Simulation from Drexel University. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science Nursing degree in Healthcare Management and an MBA from St. Peter's College, a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Felician College and a Master’s degree in Nursing Education from Ramapo College.

OCTOBER 2019 As we continuously strive to educate our organization about the dedicated efforts of our nurses, here’s a look at our newly re-modeled Nursing Professional Development team and their responsibilities.

Angela McCormack, MSN, RN-BC is a Professional Development Specialist who works to educate nurses both on the day and night shifts.

Enid Berg, MEd, BSN, RN, CCRN, CRRN is a Nursing Professional Development Practitioner who works with Progressive Care, Critical Care and Step Down Unit nurses to update and advance the skills needed to effectively and compassionately care for their patients.

She is best known for her clinical expertise and leadership positions in many areas for 47 years and education for 21 years. Angela brings her experiences in medicalsurgical, critical care, open heart, pediatrics, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, home care, outpatient practice, urgent care centers and nursing homes from many top medical centers. She taught as a full-time faculty member at University of Nevada, Las Vegas and is an adjunct professor at Mount Saint Mary College and an educator for an outpatient practice.

Enid is a Board-certified Critical Care Nurse. She is the Nurse Leader Advisor for the Shared Governance Interdisciplinary Education Committee. Enid is the Nurse Liaison for the Graduate Medical Education Residents at Orange Regional. Additionally, she is a Clinical Adjunct Professor for the School of Nursing at Mount Saint Mary College.

She holds a Master’s Degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing with a Minor in Administration from CUNY and a Post-Master's Certificate in Nursing Education from Rutgers University.

Enid holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Chamberlain University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Physiology from West Virginia University. She also holds a Master of Education degree in Sport Management from East Stroudsburg University.

Karen Canavan, BSN, RNC, CCRN, NNP-BC, NE-BC is a Nursing Professional Development Specialist for Women and Children’s Services who promotes the professional development of staff in Labor and Delivery, Mother Baby, NICU and Pediatrics.

Gregory Fean, EMT is the GHVHS American Heart Association Training Center Coordinator who provides BLS, ACLS, PALS training to all Orange Regional staff, as well as overseeing the same programs for the rest of the GHVHS. In addition to in-house, he provides the same trainings to community members.

Greg is Co-chair of Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT), the team that responds to all Code Blue and Rapid Response calls. Greg was one of the developers of MERT, developing processes, policy and providing trainings to ensure successful resuscitative efforts are performed consistently. He is also Co-chair of the Safe Patient Handling Committee.

Karen has worked in maternal child health for 25 years and is Board-certified as a nurse executive, neonatal nurse practitioner and neonatal critical care nurse.

She completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at the Thomas Edison State College in NJ. Karen graduated from the Georgetown University Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program.
