24th Annual Orange Regional Medical Center

Golf Classic Success The Orange Regional Medical Center Foundation’s annual Golf Classic on June 22 drew 248 golfers and raised an astounding $240,000 in net proceeds, money already earmarked to help support Orange Regional’s new medical office building and The Spagnoli Family Cancer Center.

“The Golf Classic is a wonderful way to socialize with people from nearly every unit and department of the hospital, and a great opportunity to meet the many people who are united in their support of the hospital and the care it provides to our community,” said Philip Massengill, MD, Medical Staff Vice President.

Chaired by Ray VanVoorhis and Jake Kriney, this event was held at Wallkill Golf Course and West Hills Country Club. 

We plan to share with you important advances at our hospital and ways you can get involved.

Orange Regional is at a crossroad now as it evolves into a teaching medical center and develops into a destination campus for all your health care needs. The recent ground breaking ceremony launched the first major expansion at the hospital since it was opened in 2011 and it is a significant initiative. The new and expanded Spagnoli Family Cancer Center will house all cancer services under one roof moving them from their current off-site locations. The new medical office building will modernize all outpatient services, create a teaching environment for our new and growing residents and internship programs and provide space for clinical leadership particularly for medical specialties not currently available locally.

Our Foundation will launch a campaign to support this effort in the fall and we are already humbled by an anonymous $500,000 gift to start us off and of course, the generous and early support of the Spagnoli Family. The success of our recent Golf Classic will also be earmarked for the Campaign. But we will need many to help support this project and hope that you find this a project you can generously support.

We all desire significance — to lead happy and fulfilled lives surrounded by family and friends. For many of us, there is a compelling need to make a difference that leads us to ponder our legacy. What kind of legacy will you leave? A bequest is perhaps the easiest and most tangible way to leave a lasting impact on the people and organizations that mean the most to you.

In the words of the Orange Regional Foundation Legacy Society member David Diness: “Life your life to the fullest. Enjoy it, be generous to those you care about. When you pass on, leave your assets to those you cared for when alive.”

With the help of an advisor, you can include language in your will or trust specifying a gift to be made to family, friends or charity as part of your estate plan. A bequest may be made in several ways: • Gift of a dollar amount • Gift of a percentage of your estate • Gift of a specific asset • Gift of the residue of your estate One benefit of a charitable bequest is that it enables you to further our work long after you are gone. Better yet, a charitable bequest can help you save estate taxes by providing your estate with a charitable deduction for the value of the gift. With careful planning, your family can also avoid paying income taxes on the assets they receive from your estate.

A retirement asset like an IRA or 401(k) makes an excellent bequest to charity. If your IRA were given to your family, much of the value would be depleted through estate and income taxes. By designating Orange Regional Foundation as the beneficiary of part or all of your IRA, the full value of your gift is transferred to us tax free at your death and your estate receives a charitable deduction. Similarly, if your insurance policy is gifted to us at your death, your estate avoids paying tax on the asset value and receives a charitable deduction. To make a bequest of your IRA, other retirement account or life insurance policy, obtain a beneficiary designation form from your Plan custodian or insurance company and designate the Orange Regional Foundation as beneficiary.

We’re Letting

Lend A Hand Here is your last chance to be part of the Lend A Hand For Kids Campaign.

The $2.1 million campaign has added a very successful Pediatric Emergency Room along with a vital Child Life Program. The Pediatric ED has seen over 24,000 patients, and the Child Life Program has provided comfort to nearly 2,000 sick kids. These are kids and families that would have had to travel well outside the area for care and treatment.

The campaign is just $50,000 short of its goal. With each dollar raised, an anonymous donor will equally match the gift.

To finish off this effort, the Foundation has partnered with GiveGab, a nonprofit giving platform and powerful “crowd giving” program.

A low or no cost effort for the Foundation, the GiveGab program encourages online gifts by many at levels everyone can afford.

“This is a community-based campaign that will benefit families throughout our area,” said Foundation President Bill Dauster.

“GiveGab will allow us to take this final effort to the community in an online ‘viral way’.”

2015 Century Club Gifts to Orange Regional Century Club have funded vital patient and community programs. Your gifts have enhanced patient experience such as: • Nursing Magnet Program is a standard of excellence that provides the framework for nursing excellence and innovation. The 21st Century Club supports this pursuit by funding the application process.

• Child Passenger Safety Program hosts monthly car seat and inspection stations. This program serves scores of families in our community. Hospital staff is trained as safety technicians.

Technicians are also accessible for car seat checks to families and newborns upon leaving the hospital. New car seats are made available free of charge to those you need them.

• NICHE – Nurses Improving Care of Hospitalized Elders will improve the physical and cognitive function of patients over 65 years old using specialized care and management.

Greater Hudson Valley Health System

Receives $1 Million from Anonymous Donor to Expand Services at Catskill Regional Medical Center and Orange Regional Medical Center An anonymous donor has given $1 million to two member hospitals of the Greater Hudson Valley Health System (GHVHS). The two gracious gifts of $500,000 were received

by Orange Regional Medical Center and Catskill Regional Medical Center. Orange Regional Medical Center will use the gift to support funding for an expansion project which includes building a new Medical Office Building and a Cancer Center. Catskill Regional Medical Center had already begun a fundraising effort to enhance and upgrade inpatient facilities throughout the hospital.

Memorial Tribute Gifts

The donor was a grateful patient at both hospitals and had made contributions thanking the hospitals’ doctors and nurses for their care and compassion over the years. The donor asked that no naming opportunities or recognition be provided.

“What a wonderful way to express their gratitude and tell our hospital system family that they are doing a terrific job,” said Scott Batulis, CEO of Greater Hudson Valley Health System. “We were so happy that our current expansion and enhancement efforts at both hospitals pleased these donors.

They really want us to succeed and we are very grateful for their generosity and confidence.” 

Caleb McCarty, a 7-year-old from Goshen, used the occasion of his own birthday party to ask friends and family for gifts for the ORMC Pediatric Center.

When the McCarty family dropped off the donations, they were happy to get a tour of the Pediatric Emergency Department. Thanks, Caleb! 

‘A’ Grade Puts Orange Regional In Top 31% of Hospitals The Leapfrog Group has recognized Orange Regional Medical Center for its dedication to patient safety and awarded it an ‘A’ grade in the spring 2015 Hospital Safety Scores.

Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Scores rate how well hospitals protect patients from preventable medical errors, injuries, and infections while within their facilities. Orange Regional joins the top 31 percent of the 2,500 hospitals in the United States that received an ‘A’ grade.

The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered by the Leapfrog Group, a national, non-profit hospital safety watchdog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peerreviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use when facing a hospital stay. 
