From The President & CEO

Scott Batulis President & CEO

The Ebola virus is dominating the national news and is the most important topic in healthcare today. The high mortality rate and lack of a vaccine is understandably causing alarm worldwide. As with many things, the more we learn the less fearful we become.

Members of our Executive Team continue to meet daily to plan and implement recommendations from the Department of Health (DOH), the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and other agencies. We have implemented the most current recommendations in order to ensure the safety of our patients and their families, visitors, staff and volunteers. Recently, Acting Commissioner of Health for New York State, Dr. Howard Zucker, came to visit us regarding Ebola and preparations at the State level. In the event we do diagnose a patient in our System with Ebola, we can expect a wave of support from the DOH and the CDC within hours. At this time, I am very confident that we are well prepared and have taken all the precautions necessary to effectively manage this concern. I would like to thank Rolland “Boomer” Bojo, VP of Patient Care Services & CNO at Catskill Regional and Rose Baczewski, VP of Quality & Health Information Management of the GHVHS for their leadership of the Ebola Team. The Ebola crisis has highlighted the importance of the personal health of healthcare employees and their critical role in caring for very sick patients. We not only need to

know and practice proper safety precautions when dealing with sick patients, we also need to be healthy in order to reduce the risk of getting sick ourselves. During Dr. Zucker’s visit with us he stated, “It is critically important for healthcare worker’s to get their flu shots.” He went on to say that the last thing the health system needs right now is emergency rooms full of patients with flu like symptoms and healthcare workers not vaccinated. Please get your flu shot! In addition, with our Live Well, Be Well employee health program, we are taking many steps to help you get and stay healthy. I’m proud to support many healthy opportunities including health fairs, health education, medical screenings, weight management programs, healthy food choices, educational programs, free flu vaccinations and financial incentives for participation. I hope you find these opportunities and programs helpful and valuable. Taking exceptional care of our patients requires us to take exceptional care of ourselves. Please take advantage of the opportunities we offer to get and stay healthy. Thank you for you dedication to our patients and for taking good care of yourself! Sincerely,

Scott Batulis, President & CEO

Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) is a professional doctoral degree for physicians and surgeons. Clinicians who obtain a DO degree can become licensed as osteopathic physicians who have equivalent rights, privileges and responsibilities as physicians with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. The curricula at osteopathic medical schools are very similar to MD granting medical schools. Four years in total length, the first two years of medical school focus on the biomedical and clinical sciences, followed by two years of core clinical training in the clinical specialties. Upon leaving medical school, DO graduates may enter internship or residency training programs, which may be followed by fellowship training. One notable difference between DO and MD training is that DO training adds 300 to 500 hours studying philosophically-based techniques for hands-on manipulation of the human musculoskeletal system. Did you know that one in five medical students in the United States is a DO student?

Congratulations Greater Hudson Valley Health System Diagnostic Imaging Administrator, Gene Bernieri, MBA, CRA, RT(R) (MR), presented a lecture on human resource development at this year’s AHRA Association for Medical Imaging Management’s national meeting from August 9 to 13 in Washington, D.C. This was Gene’s third consecutive year presenting at the national convention. This year’s convention topic was “Effective Performance Appraisals: A Partnership and a Means of Career Development.” The session was well attended by about 100 imaging leaders from all over the United States. Also this year, Gene was awarded with the National Annual Award for Imaging Excellence at the convention. Clinical Lead Analyst for ASAP, Dana Hendrickson, RN, and Analyst for Beaker, Nick Vanderley, from the Information Technology Department, made a presentation at the User Group Meeting for EPIC in September. They presented their implementation of lab label printing at the bedside in the Emergency Department. The presentation focused on how GHVHS has increased patient safety, decreased ED waiting times, improved patient flow, decreased door to balloon time for Cardiac patients and improved patient satisfaction and experience. The improvements of this workflow are a huge win for GHVHS and proved that the ED can be faster and safer while reducing work effort and frustration for lab end users. Food Matters: Healthy Choices Made Easy

When you visit the cafeteria for a meal, you might not expect to order fresh, local food, but lucky for Orange Regional, this is the direction we are moving in. Our “transition” has been taking place since January and has also become a staple in New York State as many healthcare facilities have taken the “Healthy Food in Healthcare Pledge.” “This Pledge is our commitment to the health of our patients, our staff, and the local community, said Manager of Clinical Nutrition, Sandra Casillo. “Through our purchasing and preparation of food at Orange Regional, we can have a positive impact on good health by providing fresh and nutritious items." Perhaps the most noticeable, through the transition, was the removal of all 20 ounce soda bottles and energy drinks and an increase in water and juice selections.

“Our effort is to ensure that Orange Regional is providing food that is both nutritious, and is produced in a way that’s good for our environment and community,” said O’Gorman. “This is a fantastic area to get fresh produce.” Also available are gluten free snacks and muffins and a healthy breakfast menu which includes a Mediterranean scramble, power breakfast, egg sandwich thin, huevos rancheros and fresh start omelet. There’s also a morning yogurt bar with a selection of fresh fruit and toppings. Did you know that yogurt has become the official snack of NY State? If that wasn’t all, the cafeteria has eliminated transfats and is on a quest to become “fried-free.” “If you really think about it we’re not taking away, we’re giving back,” said Director of Nutrition and Food Service, Nancy Tienken. She added that the cafeteria is becoming a place to help people break out of unhealthy eating patterns by allowing them to explore new options.

“We’re saying instead of this, try this!” said Executive Chef, Gregory O’Gorman. “It’s like peeling away the layers of an onion.”

So the next time you pass the chicken wings, know that they are now baked, not fried and come in even more different delicious flavors including teriyaki, buffalo and lemon pepper. Yum!

And speaking of vegetables, did you see that salad bar? Through its collaboration with local Pine Hill Farms, Greg and the Nutrition and Food Service Department have reformatted the salad bar to introduce more variety including items such as tofu, edamame, roasted vegetables and lower fat prepared salads.

So as the colder months approach, don’t forget to sample the gourmet soup selection and pair it with crackers, pretzels or pita chips. For more information on the healthy menu and the Nutrition and Food Service Department, contact Nancy Tienken at x 0403 or ntienken@ormc.org.

Healthcare Security & Safety Week Celebrated October 12 to 18 During this week, Orange Regional’s Security Services recognized our officers who go ‘Above and Beyond’ their responsibilities in delivering the best services to our patients, staff and visitors. Thank you to all members of the Security Team for all you do to keep us and our patients safe!

National Preparedness Expo Manager of Emergency Preparedness, Robin Deickmann, participated in the Home Depot Emergency Preparedness Expo where she shared emergency and safety information during National Preparedness Month.

Everything You Need To Know About Annual Education (AED) Annual Education is off to a terrific start. Thanks to staff for moving quickly on completing your annual education. Here’s an interesting fact - last year at this same time 26% of you had completed AED. This year, we have 44% completion! Here’s a list of questions the Organizational Development and Learning team think you may want answered: Why do we have AED every year? To keep all employees informed of the most up-to-date information, ensuring the safety of our patients, visitors & employees. To meet all regulatory agency requirements. Does every module have a post-test? Yes What is a “passing” score? 80% or higher. The scores vary by module. What if I fail the post-test? You have three attempts to pass each module. Failure on all three attempts results in a lockout. Please call OD&L at extensions 0223, 0226 or 0228 to be reset. How many modules are there? 12 How long should it take me to complete AED? 2 hours maximum Can I complete AED from home? AED is to be completed during working hours. AED can be done from home with pre-approval from your department leader.

What happens if I don’t complete all the modules by the due date of 12/31/2014? Non-compliance will result in a “Does not fully meet expectations” or “Zero” on annual performance appraisal and employee will be placed on Administrative Leave without pay and may be removed from payroll. Refer to General Annual Education Policy #130043. Will I get timed out of Swank? Yes, if a post-test in Swank is inactive for 20 minutes you will be timed out resulting in a failure. Here are some helpful hints to complete AED: • Approach AED one module at a time • Take your time and consider your answers • You have until December 31, 2014 to complete AED – plan your time accordingly For more information, contact any member of the OD&L team: Scott Bush at x 0223, Elizabeth Steinberg at x 2006, Naomi Lippin at x 0228, or Betsy Kennally at x 0227.
