BIOGRAPHY & DESIGN VISION
magli.gianluca@gmail.com
Born and raised in the fascinating city of Reggio Emilia, I grew up a creative, curious and extroverted kid knowing that my hometown, despite being a beautiful cradle of my early creativity and inspiration, was just one of my many destinations.

Such correlation exists by means of creating environments that do more than serving a functional purpose. They indeed create an experience by evoking a unique emotional response.
Driven by a strong interest in experiencing Architecture from multiple cultural perspectives, I moved to China, while studying at the Politecnico of Milan, and graduated from the Tongji University with a Double Master’s Degree in Architecture and Urban Planning.

In fact, the study of space and architectural shapes easily transforms into graphic and digital communication as the result of a hierarchy of symbols.

The intersection between these disciplines is where my passion lies. I find these two sectors of design inseparable: they rely on each other by informing relations between external and internal experiences.
Living in China represented an incredible opportunity to experiment with new techniques and to acquire multi-perspective approaches which, in turn, both enhanced my competences and expertise in architectural design and further refined my tastes in terms of the innovative solutions I since then apply to my works.

I am interested in exploring the connection from the scale of a person sitting in a chair to the relation they have to the city context. They are of equal importance.
Over time I learned and became aware that Architecture cannot be held within a single field, as it represents the expression of the synergy connecting different elements which interdependently coexist.

While working for Duccio Grassi Architects studio, I get the chance to improve my skills into Retail design for a local fashion Brand which is Max Mara Fashion Group. Max Mara is one of the most famous brand in the women clothing, wolrdwide speaking. The industry is spread in diffrent countries with stores, mainly designed by DGArchitects. I learnt the management of a retail design from the concept and layout of the store, to the Executive drawings. I participate in the design of a specific case which is the JR Kyoto Isetan store, locate into a fashion mall. After drafting a layout concept, it followed the 3d render visualisation of the store for the interiors. The interior design was very focused to the choose of materilas and the attention to the details was fundamental. The strenght of this layout project is the open space feeling that the design approached in order to provide a welcoming sensation and a wide view of the total space.

Another great work that was followed during the collaboration with Duccio Grassi Architects was the Dusseldorf Flagship Store for the brand of Max Mara, distributed on two levels. Being a flagship store this needed a more specific attention to the detail drawing and for the application of materials. Inside, the main element is represented by the staircase with its helical shape, enhanced by the covering material: a distinctive natural-looking metal that highlights the curves with its luxury and amber glares. interiors denote the choice of an extremely limpid design, with few notes of colour, and where the design and the clear disposition are armonically created by the plain volumes and by the choice of materials: rough stone, concrete, corten, opaque or translucent filters able to meet the communicative need and osmosis of the company. The last floor is dedicated to the most elegant collections and reveals the most important concept’s evolution, particularly through the preciousness of the materials and their combination: a brass grid embraces the elegant cenere wood and the charming platinum glass forming two irregular vol- umes that contain the VIP fitting rooms and define a non-conventional space.

The new generation store is characterized by a large and spectacular glass portico. An open space, with vaults almost 6 meters high, in continuous dialogue with the context that hosts it: the exhibition area, over 400 square meters, develops in the name of the modularity of the spaces, which are transformed from sales areas to locations for exclusive lifestyle workshops, exhibitions and pop-ups, from green to culture, and for the offer of smart shopping services such as Click & Collect, to collect purchases made online in boutiques. The renovation project of the spaces has deliberately rediscovered and preserved valuable traces of past eras, such as the Romanesque pillar that emerges from the structure. In the heart of the boutique, the dressing room area welcomes customers with structures with organic shapes in natural and precious materials. In the center, a sculpture sofa by Pierre Paulin for La Cividina in shades of red, the symbolic color of the brand.

A rigorous, solid and innovative box displays reliability through a dynamic design moving towards the future. A modern-finishing factory, a capsule which holds inside many different expressions of making ceramics. The external skin conveys a solid and authoritative image and is projected towards an avantgarde and technological scenario, expressed through the dematerialization and decomposition of volumes and the matter. The color black, eternal symbol of elegance and rigour, represents the leading element of the outer facing which is characterized by a metal framework with a dual configuration, smooth and drilled. The outer configuration aims at displaying a running factory/living factory, thanks to the use of scenographic lighting which runs through the metal structure in some of its parts, giving life and emphasizing the magnificence of the building. The box opens up through diagonal cuts, diaphragms and openings which astonish visitors by permeating the space. In doing so, the inner flows are signaled welcoming visitors to discover and experience what goes on inside the building. These dynamic cuts “fracture” the capsule’s rigour to communicate the idea of an ever-evolving project, which expands towards newer directions. 22

Interior design for a local fashion shop located at the outskirts of Modena. Dejavu is the interpretation of the fresh modernism that meets the iconic minimalism with the industrial and urban style. An atmosphere, a design, an idea. A new and functional place that conveys the passion and taste of fashion in a sophisticated, refined and avant-garde way. Innovation and minimalism that coexist through an expression of spaces that can also enhance the most simple thing as something unique with its shapes, colors and dimensions. The idea is to convert the pre-existence concept towards a newer sophisticated typology. The mood is harmonious and embraces those who experience the place. This is achieved by using dusty tones that merge with contrasted materials which are both smooth and shiny. Colored floor resin that optically expands the environment becomes the main protagonist and unique element of pleasure and richness. The space is enriched with elements and objects tone on tone but with different finishing that conclusively define a matter change. This generates a feeling of calm and quite atmosphere. Necessary will be to insert fine details with touches of warmness and refinement, using metals and consistent fabrics like velours.

New exhibition stand with an enormous eclecticism for the display of innovative products at the International fair of CERSAIE 2018. Classic and contemporary styles come together and mix together in a completely renovated shape, in order to give space to the design and innovative style of the company. In this edition, color is the backdrop of a real interior design project, where original compositions and furnishings are made with a mix of ceramic materials. A multifunctional space for meetings and exchanges with a strong identity designed to highlight the creative and sophisticated character of the Brand. Halfway between a coffee bar and a soap shop, the project follows the eclectic style where the relationship between materials, shapes and colors become the protagonist. Everything has been accurately thought to work as a whole. Spaces are wide open but still welcoming, thanks to the attention to the human scales. Pastel colors please the sight of the visitors and harmoniously contrast the glossines of the ceramic floor. Hanging plants emphisize an eclectism that goes beyond any expectation. Nature is ever present, contaminating the modern world.

III. BR AND IDENTIT Y VI. SKETCHES
The project consisted in the new restyling and renovation of the interiors and brand image of the iconic bar Dimmelo Tu, located in one of the most fascinating squares of Reggio Emilia. Since the place wears a cafè function in daytime while a cocktail bar during the night, it was was neccessary to design the space with an accurate attention to the versatility of it. Most of the attention was given to the lighting design that needed to work with a Nordic Scandinavian style requested by the owner. Thus the idea of a total look with a Scandinavian taste was born, with cool colors in shades of blue, combined with darkened and bleached oak. The customer’s attention is immediately captured by the white marble counter: a special process enriches these surfaces that at the same time make them meticulously lined and spontaneously rough. Also here the lighting plays a winning effect, thanks to the close-to-fall effect, which creates an effect of stone washed out.

THE HUMAN HIVE
H I V E III. R ES IDENTIAL I. 3D STUDIO MAX MAIN ENTRANCE
The concept of sustainable development has nowadays become the most prominent, overarching objective of city development and in countries such as China and Japan architects are fascinated by exploring and developing new architecture strategies aimed at tackling urban high-density through compact-city solutions.
Another key point is the permeability inside the building in order to avoid a massive construction inaccessible for anybody. This is the reason why the ground floor has many entrances facing every direction.
TIANTONG
ROAD
ENTRANCE
The building from the outside appears like a beehive as a result of the particular way in which the cubes are stacked and takes the shape of a mountain which has lost some parts that have fallen down on the ground.
In facts, to those architects and scholars who are engaged in studying and designing architecture in such cities, urban high-density often represents a kind of precondition. Urban high-density districts very often obscure the historic and heritage urban surroundings and it is urgent and necessary to create cutting-edge approaches and strategies to renew and insert new functions into those districts for the purpose of achieving a dynamic, integrated urban space while maintaining its context.
ENTRANCE
NORTH SUZHOU ROAD
G RO
The site is located in the West of Wusong Road, close to the Suzhou Creek in the south, and in the north-west of the renowned Garden Bridge of Shanghai (Waibaidu Bridge). The district belongs to the historic and cultural reservation area in Shanghai, which is intended to be planned and developed as a renovated center of commercial and public buildings. Simultaneously, it should be thought as a whole with its surroundings, the urban space, roads and landscape (especially the water front landscape).
MAIN ENTRANCE
DAMIN
This mountain, or beehive, displays a strong cut of the building in the center. This is created as a main axis to connect the opposite sides of the area toward the Suzhou Creek and The Bund. Other important points are the aeration and lighting systems of the building that are achieved through the creation of caves inside the building opening the shape to the outside.
AD
The two different parts of the building are linked together by bridges that create more fascinating flows to walk inside the beehive. Every floor presents different studies of green rooftop and terraces that are going to offer more valuable spaces for the citizen.
The project was born as a result of the desire to create a high-density building with strong attention paid to the human scale. For this reason, the cube as modular volume was chosen as design concept. The cube permits the approach to a mixed use and mixed functionality of the building and offers at the same time more opportunities and services to visitors. 50

Design Concept ID of a Hot Pot Restaurant located in Shanghai. The public space is developed on three levels dedicated to both public and private dining areas. The main details of the existing interior are preserved in order to give that industrial and rusty touch to new design of the restaurant. Interior design meets branding for No.1 Hot Pot Restaurant. The owner wishes to invest on a Restaurant place in Shanghai City. Architecture and Corporate image go together in a sophisticated picture that integrates the feel of the place within the brand. The goal is to create something vivid and shining, with a touch of ultra-lux, in order to distinguish the No.1 Hot Pot from the others that already exist in the city. Also the facade has been treated as a wall which becomes ornamental thanks to the integration of the logo.

The attics are made of tiles and concrete with riddles in reinforced concrete, coibentated and separated while the roof has a layer of 22 cm of isolation, coupled with a coverage mantle in corrugate iron, connected to a system that picks up the rain water.
Immersed in the rural landscape, suspended by the ground in memory of the “terramare” installations, the residence is composed by two staggered elements facing north-east: the porch or climatic mitigator and the housing space or insulating body. With an 18°-orientation towards the west, the house takes full advantage of the natural contributions which anticipate the opening to the “winter sun” and the protection from the “summer afternoon sun”, as a result of the geometry of the porch, the ample surfaces south glass door and the flowing obscuring, The combination of some characters of the agricultural houses are put forward through a framework that, in the key form-function, shows elements as the “porta morta” (passing space in the residence with a scope of ventilation), the “sporto di gronda” ( coverage’s extension for the protection of the vertical masonries) and the “portico” (integrated coverage or juxtaposed for the protection of open and external spaces of the building). The residence is characterized by a structural walls system (smaller presence of thermal bridges), constituted by bricks with pores of 38 cm, coupled with a layer of coat insulator on the external side of 10 cm.

The present work represent the interpretation of a total white house. After being restructured, the building has taken on the features of a museum space, without a domestic dimension. Through the insertion of natural elements such as stone, fire, water, nature, which are primitive signs possessing a distinctive energy, the project covers the existing presence. These elements alleviate the sensation of space-space estrangement with their intrinsic expressive force, but they retain the character of representativeness and amazement.
