WHEN I BECOME INSIDE OF THE

WAS A CHILD, MY BIGGEST WONDER WAS THAT MY DRAWINGS COULD TRUE. FOR ME DRAWING HAS ALWAYS BEEN A WAY TO EXPRESS WHAT’S MY MIND AND MY HEART; A REAL WEAPON TO GIVE VOICE TO MY VISION WORLD AND MY INTERPRETATION OF EVERYTHING’S AROUND ME.

I’M GIANLUCA AND I’M ITALIAN. I WAS BORN ON APRIL, 26TH 1989. I HAVE A SCIENTIFIC HIGH-SCHOOL DIPLOME AND I STUDIED INTERIOR DESIGN AT THE DESIGN SCHOOL OF POLITECNIC OF MILAN. I AM EXTROVERT, SMART AND EASYGOING, WITH MANY INTERESTS, SUCH AS DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE OF COURSE, PHOTOGRAPHY, FASHION, SPORT... TO IMPROVE MY SKILLS, IN 2014, I APPLIED FOR A SIX MONTHS ERASMUS PERIOD, STUDYING FOR ONE SEMESTER AT THE LAHTI UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCE, IN FINLAND. I STUDIED FURNITURE DESIGN WORKING WITH WOOD, METAL, CERAMIC... COLOURS, SHAPES AND NATURE IN FINLAND HAD BEEN MY MAIN SOURCE OF INSPIRATION, HELPING ME TO REACH MY OWN STYLE. I’M A DREAMER AND I LIKE TO SET MY MIND FREE AND THINK ABOUT THE MOST DIFFERENT THINGS, AND SO IS MY DESIGN. I LOVE GETTING INSPIRED BY THE THINGS OF THE WORLD AND NATURE, BEING FASCINATED BY COLOURS, GEOMETRY AND SHADOWS. I CONSIDER MYSELF AS A KIND OF MINIMALIST WITH AN IRONIC AND SURREALIST MIND.

E.G.G. comes from a deap research about the theme of excess and exclusiveness. It is the concept for an atomic-structured hotel made of 3\5 rooms and a little restaurant, that can be put into the wilde nature, for an amazing and exclusive experiences. A kind of cell to be setted in the most different parts of the world. The interiors are designed like a little city loft: a big and confortable bathroom, a livingroom, and a bedroom upstairs, where the guests can relax and stear at the nature allround. All the interiors are decorated and designed basing on the typical colours palettes and the textures of the choosen location.

The E.G.G.’s restaurant is designed to ‘disappear’ in the environment. The place is simple and minimalistic: a unic big room, furnished by panoramic kitchen and a big 10 places-table where guests, can stay together, contrasting with the solitary atmosphere of the rooms, as they are part of a big family. The guests are surrounded by the ‘in-coming‘ nature, thanks to the big windows.

Concept: shape and space creating

TAKE YOUR TIME is a project that deals with the theme of living and moving into urban spaces, creating new behaviours and giving new possibilities to slow down peoples’s everyday “busy running“. Cutty Sark Museum (Greenwich, London) gave me the inspiration to create the characteristic shape of this project: a “V“ shaped modular solid, that is declined to create two kind of benches ans the structure of a temporary pavilion named COVER. The porject aims to answer the different needs of Greenwich square quartier. the “V“ shape is able to change the normal streams of people, mixing obstacles with a new bench system. the triagular shape is ORIGAMI inspired and remind us about traveling and discovering, like a paper plane or waves coming out from the asphalt pavement for Cutty Sark sailer.

COVER is the name of my Bachelor Degree project. It consists in the design of a temporary Pavilion for a temporary bookshop, to be placed in front of the new Cutty Sark Museum in london. It deals with the idea of a macroscopical ORIGAMI-shaped structure, reminding a very big paper plane; a 40 meters long roof-cover containing the space for the bookshop, a LANDMARK for the city in wich people can stop and have a rest from their everyday life.

21

Rendered view of the project

To give a texture to the very big shape of the bookstore roof-cover I designed a modular panel system based on the parallelogram shape. The modules are able, if combined, to create holes and tridimensional texture , giving movement and shadows to the white facades of the roof. Schematic View of the holes in Cover’s roof pannels 22

COVER is a place where to take a little break from people ‘fast trucks‘: every part is designed to talk about confort, with sitting system and natural light effects, and invite people to stay and pass across the structure. Under COVER’s right wing people can stay and rest: there they can find a multi-postural wooden sitting system, that gives the user many possibilites. MAE is a Minimalistic concrete pavillion for modern and contemporary art exposition. The architecture aims to create deep and strong emotions into the visitor, who moves into the space observing the art collection pieces hiding behind every corner. It is great sensorial experience for the user who is put inside infinite game of light and shadows, reflections and silence; water follows him quite everywhere and gives life to the concrete walls.

The full-concrete structures highlights the shapes of the architecture and its spaces, designed by natural and artificial lights. Water is an element that devides and unifies, it guides the visitors thouought the pavillion. The concrete walls texture underlines orizzontal nature of the architecture. Cast-iron creates with its colour some kind of landmarks, focusing the eyes of the observer on the main points. Artificial lights reproduces quite the same effects of natural light.

43

Main streeams of People Main Architecture Connections

Construction phases of the Gallery starting from the analysis of the connections between the different architecture levels and the main streams of people, creating new connections and new spaces. It wants to exalt the external functionalist aspect of the architecture, projected in 1939 by Kaarlo Kononen, and transform the interiors in a metaphisical and modernist style white-cube gallery for contemporary art and design, by using sculptural and monolithic elements and a deep research about minimalism and geometrical shapes.

N

STATE OF THE PROJECT GEAD LAHTI: main floor plan 44

GEAD LAHTI is the project for the rifunctionalization of lahti (FI) bus station architecture and its surrounding as a contemporary art and design gallery.

Main Cross-section_the entrance space

Main cross-section of the gallery; the entrance space

I decided to preserve the original aspect of the entrance space, transforming it into a passing space, connecting together the two different parts of the city of Lahti. I created more doors and connected together different spaces and volumes of the architecture and added a white painted iron stair, with an installative and conceptual aspect and a brass sinuous handrail, inspired by Alvar Aalto’s projectr, to linking together the step Floor with the terrace. I preserved the original lighting system from 1939.

The composition of the interiors creates a fluid space with a fluid usability: the visitor can explore every corner, coming in straight relationship with shapes, elements and the inner volumes of the architecture. All the rooms are designed to reflect a sense of solemnity and stearnnes; the double-hight spaces give the interiors rhythm and dynamicity. The bar/bookshop space creates the occasion for citizens to find a new meeting point, always being surrounded by art and culture. Symbolic Prospective of the exhibition Area

full prospective view of the exposition gallery space 48

the spaces in the exposition gallery area are designed around the main element: the ramp, that merges toghether functionality and aesthetics: it is designed to permit expositions, and its shape divides the all area into differents spaces, connecting together different levels and rooms, creating a landmark element inside the gallery. the archetypical triangular shape of the section of the ramp is here emphatized by the white concrete triangular septum holding the side of the ramp. Also the bar/bookshop area is designed starting from a central and unic solid and sculptural elements. The rounded shape of this part of the architecture suggested me the creation of a big white circular ramp, the big white curve embrasses the columns and creates fluid flows for the users. Prospective view of the garden project 52

To complete the design of my project i wanted to approach also the design for the station parking area transforming it into a new park/square for the city of Lahti. I created green areas and water ponds, potitioned trees and sitting systems and caractherized the space thanks to geometrical shapes and natural elements, always trying to exalt and give importance to the gallery architecture. The clock tower top is the absoltire landmark of the project: i decided to give it more importance placing a lighing cube on its top, transforming it into a sort of lighthouse. MATERIALS, INSTRUMENT AND BUILDING PHASES

3SU3 is an experimental wooden and modular stool obtained by assembling together four pine wooden, square-sectioned poles coming from an old railway fence. Every pole has a 10x10 centimeters squared section, and one pointed sharp extremity. I decided to assemble and screw together nine different pieces to crearte a massive and solid-wooden stool, using four pointed parts as legs. I also decided to remove the original red colour quite everywhere but in the bottom part, creating a particular red cross shape. The top, had been polished to be smooth and nice to touch.

Flu lamp details and light-on view

FLU is an experiment for a lampshade, taking inspiration from nature and insect world. It aims to represent lightness and geometry of a wing of an insect as a butterfly, trying to reduce and abstract those aspects into minimal terms. It is designed by cutting, bending and folding a sheet of aluminium as it is an ORIGAMI creation. FLU is a desk lamp, that creates atmosphere with shapes of light and shadows on the wall not disturbin the user: the folded shapes hide perfectly the lamp bulb catching all the direct lights.

APPE is a project inspired by the perfection of nature. It borrows the semplicity of the hyve simple hexagonal shape to create a minimal and smart piece of furniture with a graphical and artistical soul. It is an organizer and a hanger, and gives you the possibility to decorate a space with a very simple and colourful object. Yellow is the colour of concentration but also of happyness and what is better than some honey to make your house smyle.

APPE’s six components

Details reveal APPE’s semplicity and functionality. It is realized in five different yellow metal components that permit the user to combine more than one hanger together personalizing his own space, with different combinations, adapting to every kind of spaces; the wooden hexagonal boxes can also be combined very easily just changing their position on the hanger: the hexagon is a “magical” shape that is able to build together fastastic geomeztries with great strength.

BECCO is the project of a family of cups, my interpretation of a couple of ceramic objects to contain hot and cold beverage and for a long or short drinks, like tea, coffee and hot chocolate but also cold milk and so on. The concept deals with the idea of sharing and the possibility to make your friend taste your drink, and project of a cup without handles; I hate handles! BECCO creates new habits for the users who has the possibility to use them however they want. The cups can be stucked up as they have all the same bottom shape. three of the little one are high as a big one.

Three little cups are as tall as a big one

The spout of the big cup can be used as a handle itself but also to pour liquids into other containers and cups. Its shape was designed to permit people not to get their nose touched and dirt with liquids and coffee or chocolate foam. this detail gives the cup an interesting and enigmatic shape, and a funny habit and aspect to the face of the user, when other people see this. Thanks to its geomatrical and cilindrical shape the cup can be stucked up in many different ways, depending from the user preferences

Every object is made in a certain material and has a certain colour. Sometimes we just use our objects without even paying attention to what we are holding or looking at. This project aims to open people mind giving a sort of key of interpretation to object world’s details. the ‘ingredients‘ are: the objects, backgrounds in different colours, and human body parts... Then Just open your eyes and try to see the meaning beyond!

BECCO’s cups trittico (model Roberta mantegazza)

.OBJ is a collection of pictures analizing theme of ordinary-life objects. We use to consider them as simple objects with just function but any signification; reflecting about their shape and colours Here background colours, the use of human body and different point of view give a deeper interpretation to the pictures that aim to elevate the sense of ordinary objects. Pure colours backgrounds isolate and elevate the sense of objectgiving you a new point of view; a particular camera shot is able to focus your attention on different aspects of the object, underlining its shapes and parts. Including human body inside the shot, the objects completely changes their meaning, resembling something different, new and unusual.
