Pick an avatar as a starting point

Notes: Common screen for both learners and tutors. In relation to learners, avatars are used to create a digital learners identity in the platform. In addition, avatars are used to augment the learning material with relevant verbal and non-verbal behaviours. The samples shown above are the best examples of the avatars that can be used, in order to avoid the uncanny valley effect. In relation to tutors, avatars are used to create a teaching identity in the platform, but also to bond with learner-avatars in the virtual classroom that has been created just for them.

Close X Notes: Once the user selects the proper body part, the floating menu is updated automatically with new body part items (e.g., body type). The user can exit this screen any time, and keep the default avatar from the previous screen. The upper right indicator shows a) the name of the body item b) how many panels with the particular item exists in the system. Users can customize their avatar as many times they like by selecting the option “Customize my avatar” in the entry screen.

Close X Notes: Question-Answering (QA) process is an essential part of every learning process. Learners are able to query the system using natural language about the courses they are registered in, coursework requirements, important dates (e.g., coursework deadlines) courses they have attended so far, course summaries assigned by the tutor, tutor details, and many more. The avatar also proactively reminds to learners important details assigned by their tutor. Each answer is accompanied by the relevant props to enhance learning (e.g., pictures, videos, etc).

Close X Notes: Props are defined by the tutor of each module and include a range of multimedia elements – simple pictures, word documents, diagrams, complex 3D animations, etc. The system is also capable of requesting additional information and props (when the internal databases don’t have the answer) from external resources (e.g., Google, Wikipedia, etc)

Notes: QA dialogues are defined by the tutor/content creator of the course. These are, questions typically asked by learners for the specific module. Questions do not have to be asked verbatim by learners to match with a response. As long as the system has a pattern that looks like the user’s question, matching will take place and the relevant response (and prop) will be returned.

However, when the tutor is not online, and the learner requests to communicate with their tutors automated responses can be used.
