Vor genau 30 Jahren eröffnete der Hotelier Hans C. Leu das Giardino Ascona. Er bespielte es wie eine Bühne, machte Pink zur Hausfarbe und das Hotel weit über die Landesgrenze hinaus bekannt.

It’s exactly 30 years since hotelier Hans C. Leu opened the doors of Giardino Ascona. He made the villa his very own stage, painting the facade pink and quickly establishing its reputation worldwide.

Damals wusste noch niemand, dass es einmal das Mutterhaus einer kleinen Hotelkollektion werden würde. Mit dem Zürcher Atlantis

by Giardino managt die Gruppe heute vier Häuser in der Schweiz.

Back in those days, nobody knew that it would be the cornerstone of a small luxury hotel group. Together with Atlantis by Giardino in Zurich, the group now comprises four exclusive hotels in Switzerland.

Gemessen am Jahr 1986 geht es derzeit recht turbulent zu: Die Welt ist aus den Fugen geraten. Ein Grund mehr, wie die Schriftstellerin Sibylle Berg in einem Text für dieses Magazin schreibt, immer mal wieder in eine «Parallelwelt» zu flüchten. Unsere Hotels sind Parallelwelten. Mit unseren Mitarbeitern bieten wir Gästen unvergessliche Erlebnisse und Momente, um dem Alltag zu ent­­kommen und wieder zu sich zu finden. Ab 2016 starten wir in Ascona und in St. Moritz mit Ayurveda- und Yoga-​Retreats.

Aufgebaut wurde diese Sammlung im vergangenen Jahr. Sie fokussiert sich auf in der Schweiz lebende Künstler und verbindet so das Atlantis

by Giardino mit Zürichs vielseitiger Kunstszene. Symbolisch dafür steht das grossformatige Gemälde «Pixie Wings» von John M. Armleder vor dem Ballroom des Hotels. Der Künstler vereint Gegenstände wie ein Babykrokodil, farbige Pompons und Girlanden aus silbernem Lametta zu einem glamourösen Farbenrausch. Ruhiger ist Armleders Gemälde im Gourmet-Restaurant Ecco. Das eigens für diesen Raum geschaffene Triptychon «Geranium Sanguineum» nimmt die Erdtöne und das Grün des angrenzenden Waldes auf und mischt sie mit hellen Glitzersteinen – sie spielen auf das Lichtermeer der dem Hotel zu Füssen liegenden Stadt an. Im Restaurant Hide & Seek sehen Gäste zwei grossformatige Arbeiten der iranischen Künstlerin Shirana Shahbazi – Farbexplosionen, inspiriert von klassischen Motiven der Altmeister-Malerei.

This collection has been amassed over recent years. It focuses primarily on the work of living Swiss artists, bringing Atlantis by Giardino together with Zurich’s diverse and vibrant art scene. A symbol of this is the large-scale painting "Pixie Wings", by John M. Armleder, that hangs in front of the hotel ballroom. The artist juxtaposes objects like a baby crocodile, bright pompons and garlands of silver tinsel in a glamorous explosion of colour. Then there is the quieter appeal of Armleder’s painting in the gourmet restaurant Ecco. Specially commissoned for this room, the triptych "Geranium Sanguineum" reflects the earthy and green tones of the surrounding forest and fuses this with pale, glittering stones that mirror the city lights that twinkle far below the hotel. In Restaurant Hide & Seek, guests can admire two large-scale works by Iranian artist Shirana Shahbazi – explosions of colour inspired by the classic motifs of Old Master paintings.

Und während beider Weltkriege trafen sich Exilkünstler im heute noch existierenden Café Odeon am Bellevue. Inzwischen zählt die Stadt mit ihren über 50 Museen und unzähligen Galerien zu den führenden Kunstmetropolen Europas. Sammler, Künstler und Kuratoren treffen sich hier alljährlich zum Zurich Contemporary Art Weekend.

In diesem Sommer findet hier zudem die europäische Kunstbiennale Manifesta statt; gleichzeitig feiert man 100 Jahre Dada. Die Stadt ist 2016 ein Magnet für Kunstinteressierte aus aller Welt. Viele werden das Atlantis by Giardino als Basis für ihren Aufenthalt wählen – denn neben der einzigartigen Lage bietet das Hotel eine bedeutende Sammlung zeitgenössischer Kunst.

urich’s history is steeped in art and culture. The Dada movement was born here, with Hugo Ball, Tristan Tzara und Hans Arp staging their first performances at Cabaret Voltaire in 1916. And during both world wars, artists in exile hung out in Café Odeon, which still stands proud on Bellevue Square today. Now the city is one of Europe’s leading art hubs, with more than 50 museums and countless galleries. Collectors, artists and curators meet every year at the Zurich Contemporary Art Weekend.

This summer, the city will also be playing host to the European Biennial of Contemporary Art, Manifesta, while also celebrating 100 years of Dada. In 2016, Zurich is a magnet for art enthusiasts from all over the world, many of whom will choose to stay at Atlantis by Giardino – besides its stunning location, the hotel showcases an important collection of contemporary art.

Atlantis by Giardino

Marcel van Eeden’s Zeichnungen sind im Erdgeschoss zu sehen. Der Künstler nimmt den Betrachter seiner Werke mit auf einen Spaziergang durch die Stadt. Er führt ihn entlang der Seepromenade zum Bellevue, macht dort einen Abstecher in die berühmte Kronenhalle und steht schliesslich mit ihm vor einem Gemälde von Francis Picabia im Kunsthaus Zürich.

Sofia Loren, Muhammad Ali und die schwedische Popgruppe ABBA sind auf dem Weg zum Ballroom zu sehen: Patrick LoGiudice hat die ehemaligen Gäste des Hotels mit einer speziellen Wachstechnik verewigt. Auch die unzähligen Schwarz-Weiss-Fotografien zeugen von der bewegten Vergangenheit des Hotels. Sie wurden im Archiv und in Gästebüchern gefunden und auf grosse Formate aufgezogen. Nun zieren sie die Etagenflure.

Da sieht man Sammy Davis jr. einer Limousine entsteigen, Muhammad Ali vor dem Hotel sitzen und den wunderbaren Freddy Mercury. Er gab in der Bar des Atlantis einst ein Privatkonzert. So lebt der Glamour der 70er Jahre in der neuen Kunstsammlung des Hotels wieder auf.

Barbara Seiler ist Galeristin in Zürich. Sie hat die Kunstsammlung des Hotels zusammen mit der Projektmanagerin Silvana Zabel aufgebaut.

The artist takes his viewers on a stroll through the city. He takes them along the lakefront to Bellevue Square, taking a detour into the famous Kronenhalle restaurant and finally brings them to a painting by Francis Picabia at Kunsthaus Zürich.

Sofia Loren, Muhammad Ali and the Swedish pop group ABBA attract attention on the way to the ballroom - Patrick LoGiudice has immortalised the hotel’s famous past guests using a special wax technique. Also countless black and white photographs recount the hotel’s eventful past – from archives and guest books as well as in large format. Now they grace the hotel floors – be it Sammy Davis Jr. getting out of a limousine, Muhammad Ali sitting in front of the hotel or the legend that was Freddie Mercury, who once gave a private concert in the bar at Atlantis. In this way, the new art collection lives and breathes the glamour of the 1970s.

«Ein Chef warf mit Tellern nach uns» Stefan Heilemann ist Executive Chef im Ecco Zürich, Bastian Mantey im Hide & Seek. Ein Gespräch über Lieblingsspeisen, Kochen als Leidenschaft und harte Lehrjahre.

Sie gehören zu den Jungen Wilden unter den Köchen. Sie haben höchste Ansprüche an ihre Arbeit und möchten dabei Spass haben. Stefan Heilemann (34) hat in der legendären Traube Tonbach bei Harald Wohlfahrt gelernt, danach war er mehrere Jahre Sous Chef bei ​Rolf Fliegauf im Zweisternerestaurant Ecco Ascona. Im Atlantis by Giardino entwickelt Stefan Heilemann das Ecco-Konzept weiter. Bastian Mantey (36) mischt die klassische französische mit der feinen asiatischen Küche. Nach Stationen wie dem Restaurant Facil in Berlin und dem Foliage in London ging er nach Asien, wo er zuletzt als Director of Culinary im Hotel St. Regis in Bangkok arbeitete. Mit seinen Kreationen siegte er auf dem Malaysia International Gourmet Festival. Beide Köche sind in Deutschland geboren.

Bright, young and bold, these chefs are cooking up a storm in the kitchen, with their impeccably high standards and fun-loving natures. Stefan Heilemann, 34, trained under Harald Wohlfahrt at the legendary Traube Tonbach, and was then for many years Sous Chef to Rolf Fliegauf at the two-Michelin-starred Ecco Ascona restaurant. Stefan Heilemann is developing the Ecco concept further at Atlantis by Giardino. Bastian Mantey, 36, masterfully combines classic French and delicious Asian flavours. Following stints at the Facil restaurant in Berlin and Foliage in London, he went to Asia, where he recently worked as Culinary Director at Bangkok’s St. Regis hotel.

He wowed crowds at the Malaysia International Gourmet Festival with his creations. Both chefs were born in Germany.

Wer viel kocht und sich für die Küche interessiert, muss viel ausprobieren. Können Sie sich an das Schrecklichste erinnern, was man Ihnen jemals vorgesetzt hat?

Bastian Mantey: Ich war auf Bali – mein damaliger Chef lud mich auf eine Schlangenfarm ein. Sie essen dort sautierte Schlangen und trinken das Blut. Die Schlange wird gehäutet und das Blut in eine Flasche gepresst. Ich habe das auch bestellt, doch als das Glas Blut dann vor mir stand, dachte ich: Nein, das packst du nicht.

Stefan Heilemann: Schnecken sind für mich tabu. Man sieht, wie sie aus ihren Häuschen kriechen. Dann werden sie noch eine Woche lang durchgefüttert. Das anschliessende Kochen ist für alle Sinne eine wirklich sehr, sehr unappetitliche Angelegenheit.

Wie sind Sie zum Kochen gekommen?

Heilemann: Man hat mich im Kindergarten einmal gefragt, was ich später werden möchte. Ich habe ein Bild gemalt, und als es fertig war, stand da ein Männchen mit einer Kochmütze. Ich war drei Jahre alt – die Anekdote hat mir meine Mutter erst unlängst erzählt.

Zu Hause habe ich schon als Kind in der Küche gestanden, aber den Entschluss, Koch zu werden, fasste ich während meines BWL-Studiums. Das habe ich abgebrochen und mich beworben – prompt landete ich bei Harald Wohlfahrt.

Mantey: Meine Eltern sind mit uns Kindern sehr oft essen gegangen.

Restaurants und Hotels fand ich immer spannend. Erst nach dem Abitur habe ich für sechs Wochen ein Praktikum bei einem ehemaligen Sternekoch am Starnberger See gemacht. Das hat mich total begeistert. Er hat mir viel beigebracht und hat dann auch dafür gesorgt, dass ich beim «Käfer» in München einen Ausbildungsplatz bekam.

Inzwischen sind Sie gefeierte Spitzenköche.

Welches ist Ihr Lieblingsgericht auf der eigenen Karte?

Mantey: Der Atlantis-Lachs. Wir räuchern und marinieren ihn selbst mit Papaya, Mango und Senfsamen – dadurch wird er «crunchy» und erhält eine fruchtige Note. Serviert wird er mit frischer Erbsencreme. Das macht richtig Spass!

Heilemann: Ich schwöre auf die Entenleber mit Apfel und Cerealien. Entenleber ist sehr schwer – das Eis und der grüne Apfel machen das Gericht aber leicht, und die karamellisierten Cerealien bringen Konsistenz und Süsse rein: ein Traum!

Ist Ihnen einmal etwas so richtig misslungen?

Heilemann: O ja, das war im zweiten Lehrjahr in der Traube Tonbach.

Ich war für die Mitarbeiterküche eingeteilt und sollte die Sauce mit Stärke abbinden. Leider habe ich die Stärke nicht zuerst mit Wasser angerührt. Es gab einen dicken Klumpen, und das Essen war vermurkst.

Mantey: Ich war im ersten Lehrjahr. Freunde kamen eines Abends zu mir nach Hause – die Jungs wollten Pasta. Ich hatte zuvor noch nie Pasta gekocht, ich bin kein Pastafan. Als ich die Nudeln ins kalte Wasser stellte, brüllten sie los: Du bist beim «Käfer» und kannst keine Pasta kochen?

Was hat Sie beruflich am meisten geprägt?

Mantey: Meine Jahre in Asien. Auf Bali hatte ich einen grandiosen Executive Chef. Er hatte alles im Griff, machte alles mit Liebe zum Detail und konnte die Leute motivieren. Später im St. Regis in Bangkok wurde unser Food and Beverage Manager krank: Ich war sieben Monate für 110 Köche und 150 Servicekräfte verantwortlich.

Heilemann: Ich wusste: Wenn ich Koch werde, möchte ich sehr schnell nach oben. Natürlich haben mich die Jahre mit Rolf Fliegauf sehr geprägt. Ein so junger Typ, der schon so erfolgreich war – das hat mich nach oben gezogen. Aber auch meine Jahre bei Harald Wohlfahrt waren sehr wichtig für mich. Er sagte immer: Ich halte euch auf 130 Prozent, damit ihr im Fall von Stress noch 100 Prozent leisten könnt. Er war auch sehr menschlich, ein riesiges Vorbild.

In der Küche geht es ja nicht immer sehr menschlich zu … oder ist das ein Klischee?

Mantey: Unter den Witzigmann-Schülern gibt es noch harte Vertreter.

Einer hat einmal mit Tellern nach uns geworfen. Die waren dreimal so viel wert, wie mein Monatsgehalt betrug. Und in London hat mich Chris Staines, Chef des Restaurants Foliage, einmal so angeschrien, dass ich mir gesagt habe: Niemals wirst du so mit deinen Mitarbeitern umgehen.

Heilemann: Solche Erfahrungen habe ich auch gemacht. Aber wir Jüngeren haben daraus gelernt. Bei uns wird nicht geschrien. Ich bin froh, dass wir so ein tolles Team sind. Alle halten zusammen, gehen zusammen aus und sind einfach gut drauf. Die Arbeit muss doch Spass machen – bei all dem Stress!

Was macht Sie im Alltag glücklich?

Mantey: Wenn der Service super läuft und Team und Gäste happy sind.

Heilemann: Zu uns kommen Gäste, die sich in ihrem Leben vieles leisten können. Wenn sie sich dann bei uns für einen bemerkenswerten Abend bedanken, geht das Herz direkt auf.

Anyone who cooks a lot and is interested in cooking has to be adventurous when it comes to food. What’s the most revolting dish you have ever been served?

Bastian Mantey: It was in Bali when my boss at the time invited me to a snake farm. There, they eat sautéed snakes and drink the blood. The snakes are skinned and their blood is squeezed into a bottle. As the glass of the blood stood in front of me, I thought: There’s no way you can do this.

Stefan Heilemann: Snails are enough to make my stomach churn.

You see them slither out of their shells and then you have to wait an entire week to fatten them up. Cooking them is a totally unappetising affair all round.

What sparked your love of cooking?

Heilemann: Someone asked me in kindergarten what I’d like to be one day. I drew a picture and there it was for all to see – a little man in a chef’s hat. I was just three years old, but my mother only recently told me that story. As a child, I spent much of my time hanging around in the kitchen, but I didn’t decide to pursue cooking as a profession until I ditched a course in Business Studies and instead applied to be a chef – I quickly ended up with Harald Wohlfahrt.

Mantey: My parents often used to take us out to eat, and I always found restaurants and hotels exciting. After completing my school leaver’s certificate, I did a six-week internship with a former Michelin-starred chef on Lake Starnberg. It was simply fascinating.

He taught me a lot and made sure that I got an apprenticeship at Käfer in Munich.

Now you are both top chefs in your own right.

What is your favourite dish on your own menus?

Mantey: The home-smoked and marinated Atlantis salmon, with papaya, mango and mustard seeds – it has plenty of crunch and a fruity aroma. We serve it with fresh pea cream. It’s a fun dish.

Heilemann: I swear by duck liver with apple and cereals.

Duck liver is very heavy, but the lightness of the ice cream and the sharp tang of green apple offsets the richness nicely, while the caramelised cereals give it texture and sweetness. It’s incredible!

Have you ever had any major catastrophes in the kitchen?

Heilemann: For sure. Take my second year training at Traube Tonbach, for instance. I was responsible for cooking for the staff and was supposed to thicken the sauce with starch. Unfortunately, I didn’t first mix the starch with water and it had huge lumps in it – the food was totally ruined.

Mantey: I was in my first year of training. Friends came round to my place one night for dinner and they fancied pasta. I had never cooked pasta before as I’m not a fan of it. When I put the pasta in cold water, they shouted: "How can you be a chef at Käfer if you can’t even cook pasta?"

What has most influenced your career as a chef?

Mantey: The years I spent in Asia. In Bali I had an amazing Executive Chef. He had everything under control, was passionate about attention to detail and could motivate people. Later, at the St. Regis in Bangkok, our Food and Beverage Manager took time off sick, and suddenly I was at the helm for seven months – responsible for 110 chefs and 150 waiters and waitresses.

Heilemann: When I decided to become a chef, I knew I would want to rise quickly through the ranks. Naturally, I was greatly influenced by the years I worked with Rolf Fliegauf – such a young man and already so successful! That gave me the drive to push ahead.

But the years I spent with Harald Wohlfahrt also had a big impact on me. He always said: "I keep you running at 130 %, so that in stressful times you can still perform 100 %." He was also very personable – a remarkable role model.

Chefs aren’t always treated well in the kitchen, are they? Or is that just a cliché?

Mantey: Among Eckart Witzigmann’s trainees there are some real tough cookies. One threw plates at us once. They were worth three times as much as my monthly salary. And in London, Chris Staines, the head chef at Foliage, once tore me to pieces so badly that I promised myself that I would never treat my fellow employees like that.

Heilemann: I also had a few experiences like that, but we learnt from them. We don’t shout at each other in the kitchen, and I’m happy to be part of such a fantastic team. We all help each other, go out together and keep the mood upbeat and positive. Work has to be fun – even when things get stressful.

What makes you happy in your job?

Mantey: When the service works like clockwork and the team and guests are all happy.

Heilemann: Many of our guests have experienced the finer things in life.

But when they come to us and personally thank us for a wonderful evening, it makes it all worthwhile.

THE NOMAD This summer, Zurich hosts Manifesta 11, attracting artists from all over Europe. We meet Hedwig Fijen, director of the Biennial of Contemporary Art.

ie hat die Neugier einer Alice im Wunderland, das Visionäre einer Jeanne d’Arc und den Termin­ kalender einer Angela Merkel. Sie pendelt zwischen ihrer Heimat Amsterdam und den Städten Zürich, St. Petersburg und Palermo – den Orten der diesjährigen, der vergangenen und der künftigen Manifesta. Vor über 20 Jahren hat Hedwig Fijen die bedeutende Kunstbiennale gegründet. Wer die umtriebige Holländerin in Zürich treffen möchte, muss sich auf ein exaktes Zeitfenster einstellen: ​ 14.45 Uhr bis 16.20 Uhr – so lautet die Vorgabe aus ihrem Büro. Auf die Minute pünktlich betritt sie an diesem Freitag das Hotel. Sie trägt Schwarz, hat blondes Haar, aus dem man einen Zopf so dick wie ein Schiffstau flechten könnte, und ihre blauen Augen sehen ein wenig müde aus. Dennoch beantwortet sie jede Frage präzise und temperamentvoll. Alle zwei Jahre wechselt die Kunstbiennale in eine andere Stadt – im Sommer richtet sie ihren Fokus für 100 Tage auf Zürich. Hedwig Fijen und ihr Team organisieren, bringen Menschen zusammen und wählen (gemeinsam mit Verantwortlichen der jeweiligen Stadt) den Kurator aus.

Für Zürich haben sie den deutschen Künstler Christian Jankowski auserkoren. Er stellt die Manifesta unter das Motto «What People Do for Money». Jankowski verbindet 25 Künstler mit 25 Zürcher Berufstätigen.

Aus deren Begegnungen sollen sich Kunstwerke entwickeln. Der norwegische Fotograf Torbjørn Rødland veranstaltet eine Fotosession mit einer «Promi-Zahnärztin».

Der Berliner Marco Schmitt macht ein Praktikum bei der Polizei, und die ungarische Künstlerin Andrea Éva Györi erforscht mit einer Sexologin den perfekten weiblichen Orgasmus. «Wir möchten erreichen», sagt Hedwig Fijen, «dass sich die Leute Fragen stellen: Was mache ich für Geld? Was habe ich vom Leben? Verdiene ich genug, um hier zu überleben?» Die Kunst­projekte sollen auch ganz normale Zürcher zu solchen Fragen animieren. Verschiedene Plätze der Stadt werden vom 11. Juni bis 18. September 2016 mit Performances, Videoinstallationen oder Ausstellungen bespielt. Zentraler Ort ist der «Pavilion of Reflections». Er wird auf dem Zürichsee errichtet – mit Zugang über einen Ponton.

«Meine Mutter war ein Hippiegirl.»

Hedwig Fijen kam früh zur Kunst. Ihr Grossvater war Architekt, hat in Amsterdam «379 Häuser gebaut», ihre Mutter unterrichtete Kunst in der Schule, die Familie wohnte gegenüber dem Amsterdamer Rijksmuseum.

Studiert hat sie Geschichte und Kunst​geschichte. 1993 gründete sie die Biennale, um mit Mitteln der Kunst den psychologischen und geografischen Raum Europa zu erforschen. Was ihre persönliche Motivation war?

Hedwig Fijen sagt: «Die ist in meiner Biografie begründet. Meine Familie kommt ursprünglich aus Frankreich, ging nach Deutschland und emigrierte vor dem Zweiten Weltkrieg nach Holland. Ich bin zum Teil jüdisch. Die Familie meiner Mutter wurde umgebracht. Wer überlebte, ging nach Mexiko oder in die USA und kehrte nach dem Krieg nach Europa zurück.» Hedwig Fijen versteht sich als Nomadin. Ihre Neugier zeigte sich mit 17, als sie ihre Mutter mit der Frage löcherte, warum halb Europa kommunistisch sei, und was das bedeute. Die Mutter («Sie war ein Hippie­girl») buchte prompt Flugtickets in die Sowjetunion: Die Feldforschung begann.

Sie hat viel über Zürich gelesen – wie perfekt und teuer die Stadt ist, wie glatt und wie langweilig. Das hat sie auch gereizt, mit der Manifesta nach Zürich zu kommen. Längst hat sie hinter die perfekte Fassade geschaut und eine andere Welt entdeckt: bunt und vielfältig, kreativ und polyglott. Wie schafft sie es, nach über 20 Jahren Manifesta nicht in Routine zu verfallen? «Wir sind doch jedes Mal in einer anderen Stadt! Und jedes Mal fragen wir uns: Was bedeutet sie für Europa?

Was bedeutet sie sich selbst? Was ist ihre Geschichte?», sagt sie und springt auf, um einen kurzen Spaziergang zu machen – zur Spiegelgasse auf der Rathausseite der Stadt, inzwischen ihr Lieblingsort. Hier scheinen sich die Giebel der gegenüberliegenden Häuser fast zu berühren. Ganz unten, in der Nummer 1, liegt das Cabaret Voltaire, das in diesem Jahr den 100. Geburtstag des Dada

feiert und in das Projekt Manifesta integriert wird. Das Cabaret Voltaire ist ein Symbol der Freiheit, sagt Hedwig Fijen. Viele Europäer kamen hierher, flüchteten hierher, «Freaks, Intellektuelle, die Avantgarde». Vor der Nummer 14, dem Lenin-Haus, in dem der russische Revolutionär über ein Jahr gelebt hat, erinnert sie sich an die Manifesta 10, die 2014 in St. Petersburg stattfand. «Russland hatte gerade schwulenfeindliche Gesetze erlassen, was wir auch direkt thematisiert haben.» Dafür wurde sie persönlich bedroht.

Die grösste Tageszeitung legte ihr nahe, das Land schleunigst zu verlassen. «Wir wurden nicht weltbekannt für das, was wir gemacht haben, sondern weil wir es überlebt haben», sagt sie. Erfolgreich war es dennoch: 1,5 Millionen Besucher kamen. So viele wünscht sie auch der Manifesta 11 in Zürich. Und dann wird sie sich aufs Fahrrad setzen und schauen, was die Kunst mit Zürich macht – und Zürich mit der Kunst.

he has the curiosity of Alice in Wonderland, the vision of Joan of Arc and the appointment diary of Angela Merkel. She commutes between her hometown, Amsterdam, and Zurich, St. Petersburg and Palermo – the host cities of this year’s, last year’s and next year’s Manifesta. Hedwig Fijen founded the highly regarded art biennial more than 20 years ago. And anyone who wants to meet the super-busy Dutch lady in Zurich must do so within her strict time frame: 2.45 p.m. to 4.20 p.m., according to her office. She’s bang on time when she walks into the hotel this Friday. She is wearing black, has blonde hair so thick that you could plait it into a nautical rope, and blue eyes that look a little tired. All the same, she answers every question precisely and passionately. Every two years, the art biennial moves to another city – and this summer she’ll be turning her focus to Zurich for 100 days. Hedwig Fijen and her team organise everything, bringing people together and choosing the curator with city officials.

For Zurich, they chose German artist Christian Jankowski. His theme for this year’s Manifesta is “What People Do for Money”. Jankowski brings together 25 artists with 25 people living and working in Zurich. The artworks are inspired by their encounters. Norwegian photographer Torbjørn Rødland arranges a photo session with a “celebrity dentist”, Berlin artist Marco Schmitt does a police internship, and the Hungarian artist Andrea Éva Györi explores the perfect female orgasm with a sexologist.

“We want people to ask themselves: What do I do for money? What does life give me?

And can I earn enough to survive here?” says Fijen. The art project should prompt even normal residents of Zurich to ask themselves these questions. From 11 June to 18 September 2016, many squares throughout the city will be given over to performances, video installations and exhibitions. The centrepiece is the “Pavilion of Reflections” on Lake Zurich, reached via a pontoon, which was built by architecture students at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) under the direction of Studio Tom Emerson.

Hedwig Fijen came to art early. Her grandfather was an architect who had "built 379 houses" in Amsterdam, her mother was an art teacher, and the family lived opposite Amsterdam’s famous Rijksmuseum. She studied History and Art History, before founding the biennial in 1993, with the aim of exploring Europe’s geographical and psychological borders through art. Her personal motivation?

“It is rooted in my life. My family originally came from France, went to Germany, and emigrated to the Netherlands before the Second World War. I am part Jewish.

Most of my mother’s family was murdered.

Those who survived went to Mexico or the USA and came back to Europe after the war.” Fijen sees herself as a nomad.

Naturally curious, when she was 17, she questioned her mother constantly about why half of Europe was communist and what that meant. Her mother, who

she says was a “hippie girl”, promptly booked flight tickets to the Soviet Union.

And so her fieldwork began.

She has read a lot about Zurich – how perfect-looking, expensive, efficient and boring it is. And that prompted her to bring Manifesta to the city. Beneath the smooth, glossy veneer of the city, she’s already unearthed another world that is colourful and diverse, creative and multilingual. How does she manage not to slip into the same old routine after more than 20 years of Manifesta? “We are always in another city.

And each time we ask ourselves: What does it mean for Europe? What does it mean to itself? What is its history?” she says. She jumps up to go for a short walk to Spiegelgasse – on the town hall side of the city, which has become her favourite place in Zurich. Here the gables of the houses facing each other are almost close enough to touch. Right at the end, at number 1, is the legendary Cabaret Voltaire, which turns 100 this year. The centennial Dada celebrations will form part of the Manifesta project.

“Cabaret Voltaire is a symbol of freedom,” says Fijen. “Many Europeans came here, fled here – freaks, intellectuals, the avant-garde.” She pauses in front of number 14, the Lenin House, where the Russian revolutionary lived for more than a year, and recalls Manifesta 10 that took place in 2014 in St. Petersburg. “Russia had just passed anti-gay laws, which we directly addressed in the biennial.” She was personally threatened because of it, with the biggest daily newspaper advising her to leave the country immediately. “We became world-famous not because of what we had done but because we had managed to survive,” she admits. It was still a success, however – 1.5 million visitors came. She hopes for similar numbers at Manifesta 11 in Zurich. And then she will get on her bicycle and look at what art does with Zurich and what Zurich does with art.

Dieser Drink erweist der Hublot-Suite mit der Nummer 107 und der besonderen Location des Atlantis by Giardino seine Reverenz.

Er greift die Farben der Suite auf und verbindet mit Hublot das Schweizerische: Beim Kreieren habe ich mich an die Ricola-Kräuterbonbons erinnert, die ich schon als Kind gerne mochte. Im Drink sind frisch gepresster Orangensaft, ein bisschen Zitronensaft sowie haus​gemachter Sirup mit Kräutern wie Thymian und Zitronenmelisse – dazu ein kleiner Spritzer Kräuteressenzen. Der Hublot 107 hat etwas SüssSäuerlich­-Erfrischendes. Beim Trinken schmeckt man die Kräuter – und man riecht sie auch. Er bringt Energie und lässt einen die Turbulenzen des Tages vergessen. Dabei auf der Bar-Terrasse zu sitzen und auf die Stadt herunterzublicken, ist Entspannung pur.

ou’ve had a good day – or perhaps a bad one – in the office, and your head is still buzzing with thoughts about the project – plans that were drafted and discussed, decisions that were settled or scrapped. inmal setzte er sich auf seine rosarote Harley und fuhr zum Bahnhof Locarno, um einen weiteren Gast abzuholen – eine Lehrerin, über 80, wie er sagt.

Er sei behutsam gefahren, und an der ersten Ampel habe sie ihn gefragt: «Herr Leu, war das schon alles?» Von wegen: Hans C. Leu gab Gas und legte sich ein bisschen in die Kurven – kleiner Nervenkitzel, schon klar.

Als sie beim Hotel ankamen und die Dame von der Maschine abstieg, sagte sie: «Herr Leu, das war aber erotisch!»

nce, he got on his pink Harley and went to the train station in Locarno to pick up a guest. It was a teacher, more than 80 years old, if he remembers rightly. He drove carefully, and at the first traffic light she asked: “Mr Leu, is that all?” No way! Hans C. Leu accelerated and leant into the curves a bit. A touch of excitement, for sure. When they finally arrived at the hotel and the lady stepped off the bike, she exclaimed: “Mr Leu, that was erotic!”

Er macht das Hotel zur Bühne und den Gast zum Protagonisten. Auch anderswo geht man neue Wege: Der Modemacher Jean Paul Gaultier steckt den Mann in einen Rock, und die Werbung zieht ihn aus, zeigt ihn erstmals nackt. Lady Gaga wird geboren, und auch der jamaikanische Sprinter Usain Bolt sowie die US-Schauspielerin Megan Fox erblicken das Licht der Welt. 1986 ist das «Internationale Jahr des Friedens», und Sandra Kim gewinnt für Belgien den Eurovision Song Contest mit dem Titel «J’aime la vie». Das ist auch das Motto von Hans C. Leu, der zum 30-Jahr-Jubiläum des Giardino noch einmal zurückkehrt und das Zepter im Hotel für drei Tage in die Hand nimmt.

He turned the hotel into a stage and the guests into protagonists. There were also sensations in other scenes: Fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier put a skirt on a man and the advertising industry stripped him and presented him naked for the first time. Lady Gaga was born. So too were Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt and US actress Megan Fox. 1986 was the “international year of peace”, and Sandra Kim from Belgium won the European Song Contest with “J’aime la vie”. That was also the motto of Hans C. Leu, who takes the lead once again on the celebration weekend for the 30th anniversary of the Giardino Ascona.

Wo gab es das sonst: Einen Hoteldirektor, der Gäste mit dem Motorrad abholte, den ganzen Fuhrpark des Hotels rosa spritzen liess und die Mitarbeiter in der gleichen Farbe einkleidete. Selbst die Telefone waren rosa.

Er sagt: «Pink war meine Seelenfarbe.» Bei den Chinesen steht die Farbe für Gastfreundschaft, und dafür stand der erfolgreiche Hotelier während seiner ganzen Karriere. Vor 30 Jahren gründete Hans C. Leu das Giardino Ascona. Seine unkonventionelle Art machte ihn weit über die Landesgrenze hinaus bekannt. Dazu gehörte auch, was man heute unter dem Wort Inszenierung versteht: Hans C. Leu war sozusagen der Urvater der Inszenierung. Auf dem Gartenteich des Giardino liess er regelmässig eine Bühne aufbauen; dann tanzte schon einmal das ​Bolschoitheater – oder er selbst spielte den Grosswesir, kleidete sich und seine Mitarbeiter orientalisch ein und erzählte beim ​D inner Geschichten aus «1001 Nacht» – vor ihm ein Pult, im Auge klemmte ein Monokel. Ein anderes Mal liess er den Leiter des Basler Kinderzirkus kommen, damit dieser den Hotelangestellten ein paar Kunst-

stücke beibrachte: Entertainment für die Gäste. Im Hotel wurde er Cicerone genannt.

«Direktor ist fast so gut wie Doktor» Es ist ein schöner Frühsommertag. Wir sitzen im Garten des Giardino Ascona, die Vögel scheinen Symphonien zu zwitschern. Hans C. Leu trägt ein Hemd mit blauen Punkten, einen Sonnenhut und ein herrlich verschmitztes Lächeln im Gesicht. Der heute 86-Jährige schleudert die Geschichten so schnell heraus, dass man mit den Notizen kaum nachkommt. Wie er zur Hotellerie kam? «Ich war nach der Schule orientierungslos», sagt er.

«Irgendwann kam meine Mutter mit dieser Idee und meinte: ‹Direktor ist fast so gut wie Doktor.›» Nach der Hotelfachschule in Lau­ sanne zog es ihn gleich in die 5-Sterne-Welt.

«Ich hatte das Ziel, in meinem Bereich der Beste zu sein.» Viele Jahre war er im Arosa Kulm. Irgendwann wollte er in die Toskana, was nicht klappte. Als man ihn jedoch für die Begleitung des Neubaus und die anschlies­ sende Eröffnung des Giardino Ascona anfragte, sagte er gleich zu. «Ascona klingt doch wie Toskana», dachte er und liess alles im toskanischen Stil bauen: rosa Villen in einem Garten mit Zitronenbäumen und Zypressen. 23’000 Pflanzen wurden im 10’000 Quadratmeter grossen Areal des Giardino gepflanzt. Nicht zu vergessen «diese Terrakottadinger aus der Toskana» – er zeigt auf die Bodenfliesen am Aussenpool. Hinter ihm in der Ferne ist ein Berg zu sehen. Dorthin hat er manchmal Gäste mitgenommen, frühmorgens um vier. «Der Sonnenaufgang war phänomenal. Ich habe ihnen dazu Geschichten über das Tessin erzählt – Dinge, die sie anderswo nicht erfuhren.»

«Ascona klingt doch wie Toskana.»

Hans C. Leu ist, wie er sagt, «kein Intellektueller, sondern ein luftiger Mensch». Einer, der über hohe soziale Intelligenz verfügt.

Gäste persönlich zu betreuen und den Mitarbeitern Verantwortung und Kompetenzen einzuräumen – darauf basiert sein Erfolg, seine Beliebtheit bei den Gästen, die immer wieder kamen, und bei seinen Angestellten. Damit hat er etwas gepflanzt, was im Giardino Ascona noch immer gepflegt wird.

Where in the world would you find such a thing: a general manager who picks up his guests with a motorbike. What’s more, one who would go even further and have the whole hotel fleet painted in pink, with his staff dressed in the same colour. Even the telephones were pink. “Pink was my soul colour,” he says. Pink represents hospitality in China. And that’s what the successful hotelier stood for throughout his career. Thirty years ago, Hans C. Leu opened the Giardino Ascona. He became well known even outside of Switzerland for his unconventional style. That also included staging shows.

Hans C. Leu was sometimes thought of as the father of all shows. He had a stage set up on a regular basis on top of the hotel’s pond, where once the ensemble of the Bolshoi Theatre performed. Sometimes he played a vizier and his staff dressed up in oriental costumes. He would stand at the lectern sporting a monocle, telling tales from One Thousand and One Nights. He also engaged the manager of the Basel Children’s Circus to teach his staff a few tricks to provide entertainment for the guests. He was called Cicerone at the hotel.

“Director is nearly as good as doctor” It’s a lovely spring day. We are sitting in the garden at the Giardino Ascona, the birds seem to sing symphonies. Hans C. Leu wears a shirt with blue dots and a sun hat. He

smiles mischievously. The 86-year-old tells his tales so quickly that it is nearly impos­ sible to take notes. Why did he become a hotelier? “I was a little lost after finishing school,” he tells me, “but at some point, my mother had an idea and said: ‘Director is nearly as good as doctor’.” After graduating from the hospitality school in Lausanne, he was immediately drawn to the luxury hospitality segment. “It was my goal to become the best in my field.” For many years, he worked at the Arosa Kulm. At one point, he wanted to move to Tuscany, but unfortunately that never happened. When he was asked to oversee the construction and the opening of the Giardino Ascona, he immediately agreed. “Ascona does sound like Tuscany,” he thought, and had everything built in a Tuscan style: pink villas amidst a garden of lemon trees and cypresses. 23,000 plants graced the 10,000-square-metre grounds of the Giardino. Not to forget “those terracotta thingies from Tuscany” – he points at the floor tiles around the outdoor pool. Behind him, in the distance, you can see a mountain. Sometimes, he used to take guests there at 4 o’clock in the morning. “The sunrise was phenomenal. I told them stories about Ticino. Things they would not hear anywhere else.”

Hans C. Leu is, as he himself admits, “not an intellectual, but a lofty person”. Someone who has a high social intelligence. Looking after his guests personally and trusting his staff with responsibility and competence – that’s the basis of his success, and the reason for his popularity with guests who stayed regularly, as well as with his staff. He instilled something in them which is still part of the Giardino Ascona today. Philippe and Daniela Frutiger, along with current General Manager Wolfram Merkert, were his protégés. During the era of Hans C. Leu, Philippe was Food and Beverage Manager, while Daniela oversaw the spa. The two subsequently left Ascona to build up the Lenkerhof into a successful and award-winning Swiss hotel. Returning to Giardino Ascona a few years later, the couple took over the management, bringing with them more guests than ever before. Philippe and Daniela have since become joint CEOs of the Giardino Hotel Group. As for Wolfram Merkert, several years ago, he took over as general manager of the hotel. A few years ago, they renovated the first ever Giardino hotel and brought it into the 21st

Philippe und Daniela Frutiger sowie der jetzige General Manager Wolfram Merkert sind seine Zöglinge. In der Ära Hans C. Leu war Philippe Food-and-Beverage-Manager, und Daniela leitete das Spa. Dann verliessen sie Ascona. Zusammen bauten sie den Lenkerhof zu einem erfolgreichen und vielfach ausgezeichneten Schweizer Hotel auf. Als General Manager kehrte das Paar ein paar Jahre später ins Giardino zurück, und mit ihnen kamen noch mehr Gäste als jemals zuvor. Und da stehen auch noch die römischen Skulpturen – Frauen, mit denen er eine eigene Geschichte hat: Er hat die Duplikate im Pariser Louvre gekauft und mit dem Wagen höchstselbst nach Ascona gebracht. Die Grenze war nicht so einfach zu überqueren. «Sie können sich nicht vorstellen», sagt er, «wie die Zollbeamten geguckt haben, als ich mit den nackten Weibern im Wagen vor ihnen stand.» Im Sommer tritt Hans C. Leu noch einmal auf die Bühne. Vom 1. bis 4. Juli 2016 wird er drei Tage lang als Zeremonienmeister im Giardino Ascona tätig sein.

And the Roman sculptures are still there – ladies with whom he has a history. He bought the duplicates at the Louvre in Paris and transported them back in his car. The border was not passed easily. “You can imagine the faces of the customs officers”, he says, “when I turned up with a car full of naked ladies.” This summer, Hans C. Leu will once again take to the stage. For three days, from 1 to 4 July 2016, he will be once again Master of Ceremonies at the Giardino Ascona.

Ein Gespräch mit Teamchef Oliver Bierhoff über Diskretion, Vorlieben und Selfies am Pool.

ls Oliver Bierhoff noch ein Kind war, zog sein Vater jede freie Minute mit ihm zum Bolzplatz. Sie spielten sich die Bälle zu, sahen sich dabei an und erzählten Geschichten.

«Automatismen entwickeln» – so nannte Vater Rolf das Training. Es hat sich gelohnt. Oliver Bierhoff macht Karriere als Fussballer. Er startet in Essen, geht zu Bayer Uerdingen und zum Hamburger SV und landet schliesslich bei Inter Mailand.

Mit 27 kommt er zum DFB, ein halbes Jahr später schiesst er bei der Europameisterschaft in England das Golden Goal und wird zu Europas Fussballer des Jahres gewählt. Mit 1,90 Meter Körpergrösse ist der 48-jährige Deutsche ein Hüne, doch seine «schlanke Figur», wie «Die Zeit» schrieb, «erinnert eher an einen Leichtathleten als an einen ehemaligen Fussballprofi – dazu das noch immer jungenhafte Gesicht und die vollen, braunen Haare». Seit mehr als zehn Jahren managt Oliver Bierhoff das Team beim Deutschen Fussball-Bund. Er gilt als diszipliniert: Sein Tag beginnt früh mit Yoga und endet spät mit dem Beantworten von letzten E-Mails. In wenigen Wochen kommt die Nationalelf mit Trainern und Beratern ins Tessin, um sich für die bevorstehende Europameisterschaft vorzubereiten.

Es ist ihr inzwischen zweiter Aufenthalt im Giardino Ascona.

Oliver Bierhoff sprach vorab mit dem Giardino-Magazin.

uring his childhood, Oliver Bierhoff’s father took him to a football pitch at every opportunity. They kicked the ball around together and told stories. “Developing a habit”, that’s what Rolf Bierhoff called this training. And it paid off.

Oliver Bierhoff became a professional football player. He started out in Essen, changed first to Bayer Uerdingen and then to Hamburger SV before moving to Inter Milan. At the age of 27, he joined the German Football Association, DFB, and half a year later, he scored the golden goal at the European Champ­ ionships against England and was voted German Football Player of the Year. At 1.90 metres, the now 48-year-old is practically a giant, but because of his “slender frame”, as the German newspaper Die Zeit described him once, “he resembles more an athlete than a former football professional – with a boyish face and full head of brown hair.” For over ten years, Oliver Bierhoff has been managing the team. He is very disciplined, with his day starting early with yoga and finishing late answering e-mails. In a few weeks, the national team, their coaches and advisers will travel to Ticino to prepare for the upcoming European Championships. This will be their second stay at the Giardino Ascona. Oliver Bierhoff spoke to the Giardino Magazine before their upcoming trip.

Herr Bierhoff, Sie sind zum zweiten Mal im Giardino Ascona.

Welche Erinnerung haben Sie an den ersten Aufenthalt im Hotel während der EM 2008?

Oliver Bierhoff: Das Hotel ist kompakt und für unsere Bedürfnisse ideal – und es hat diesen wunderbaren Garten, in den man sich mal zurückziehen kann. Wir hatten nach dem Training tolle Abende auf der Terrasse. Ich schätze die herzliche und professionelle Gastfreundschaft des Hauses, die mit einem hohen Mass an Diskretion einhergeht.

Entscheiden Sie, welches Hotel als Quartier in Frage kommt?

Bierhoff: Wir schauen uns dafür in ganz Europa um, kommen wegen des Klimas und der Verkehrsanbindung aber immer wieder auf die Schweiz, Südtirol und Österreich zurück. Im Tessin ist es besonders schön. Wir trainieren direkt um die Ecke des Hotels und können zu Fuss oder mit den Rädern zum Platz in Ascona.

Was gefällt Ihnen am südlichsten Kanton der Schweiz?

Bierhoff: Die Kombination aus Bergen und See sowie das mediterrane Klima sind in Europa schon einmalig. Man sieht das selten: oben auf den Bergen Schnee, unten am See Palmen.

Die Lebensqualität ist hoch und die Gastronomie besonders.

Für viele wirken die Menschen im Tessin ein wenig distanziert – das Tessin ist kein Ziel für Massen. Ich mag das sehr.

Was muss ein Hotel grundsätzlich haben, damit Sie sich darin wohlfühlen?

Bierhoff: Es muss Rückzugsräume bieten und eine ruhige Atmosphäre haben. Ich lege grossen Wert auf den Service. Interessant ist aber auch, was ich im Hotel nicht haben muss. Mich nervt beispiels­ weise, wenn der Schreibtisch im Zimmer vollgestellt ist. Ich räume immer gleich alles leer, damit ich daran arbeiten kann. Noch schlimmer ist es, wenn die Angestellten am nächsten Tag alles wieder vollgepackt haben. Und was ich auch nicht mag: Wenn alle zwei Stunden vier Leute an die Tür klopfen und mir eine Schokolade aufs Kissen legen oder die Minibar kontrollieren wollen: Ich hänge immer gleich das Do-not-disturb-Schild raus.

Wie nutzt Ihr Team das Hotel konkret? Welche Services nimmt es in Anspruch?

Bierhoff: Die öffentlichen Räume eines Hotels sind wichtig, die Treffpunkte. Man muss sich immer wieder über den Weg laufen.

Das Gourmetrestaurant spielt für uns keine Rolle. Wir haben einen Koch dabei, der den Menüplan vorgibt, und die Köche des Hauses setzen ihn um. Wir essen nicht à la carte, es gibt dreimal am Tag ein Buffet. Wichtig ist, dass alles frisch ist und die Bedienung freundlich und perfekt ist. Deshalb sind wir ja zum zweiten Mal im Giardino. Wir nutzen natürlich auch die Sauna, den Pool und die Bar. 42

Wird ein Hotel immer exklusiv gemietet?

Bierhoff: Wir kommen mit einem Team von insgesamt knapp 70 Leuten. Dazu gehören 23 Spieler plus Trainer und Betreuer.

Natürlich versuchen wir immer, ein Hotel exklusiv zu mieten, wie jetzt das Giardino. Das schützt vor Fotos. Wenn die Spieler draussen am Pool liegen, unter sich sind und vielleicht auch mal lauter werden, sollen sie nicht abgelichtet werden.

Aber die Spieler posten doch auch Selfies?!

Bierhoff: Es ist etwas anderes, wenn Sami Khedira sich mit vier Spielern am Pool ablichtet und das Bild rausschickt, als wenn jemand hinter der Hecke steht und das Foto in einem vielleicht ungünstigen Moment macht.

Fotos zu posten, ist für viele Spieler bereits zu einem Teil ihres Lebens geworden. Wir verbieten es ihnen nicht, aber wir achten darauf, dass keine heiklen Fotos rausgehen.

Was wäre heikel?

Bierhoff: Bei Verletzungen müssen die Posts mit unserer Presse­stelle abgesprochen werden. Ein Tweet wie «Sitze mit dickem Knie im Zimmer und muss nach Hause fliegen» darf natürlich nicht vor einer offiziellen Pressemeldung rausgeschickt werden.

Zudem machen wir den Spielern klar, dass sie respektvoll posten müssen. Das heisst: ohne Schaden für die Mannschaft und ohne abfällige Bemerkungen über Kollegen und andere Personen. Bei allen Aktionen soll die Privatsphäre der anderen geachtet werden.

Reisen Sie privat eigentlich auch ins Tessin?

Bierhoff: Ich bin kein Europaurlauber, reise eher nach Asien oder in die USA – ganz einfach aus dem Grund, weil ich dort weniger erkannt werde.

Irgendwo läuft einem ja immer ein Deutscher oder ein Italiener über den Weg – ich habe lange in Italien gespielt.

Mr Bierhoff, you will be here at the Giardino Ascona for the second time. What are your memories of your first stay during the European Championships in 2008?

Oliver Bierhoff: The hotel is compact and ideal for our requirements. It has this wonderful garden to retreat to from time to time and a terrace where we enjoyed ourselves in the evenings.

I value the staff’s heartfelt and professional hospitality, which is paired with a high level of discretion.

Do you make the decision of which hotel the team will stay at?

Bierhoff: We are looking for the right hotel across the whole of Europe, but because of the climate and the geographic accessibility, we usually end up in Switzerland, South Tyrol or Austria. Ticino is especially beautiful. We train directly around the corner from the hotel and can reach the training grounds in Ascona on foot or by bicycle.

What do you like about the most southern canton of Switzerland?

Bierhoff: The combination of mountains and the lake as well as the Mediterranean climate is unique in Europe. You don’t see this very often: snow on the mountaintops and palm trees by the lake. The standard of living is high, and the gastronomy is especially outstanding. For many visitors, the people in Ticino seem to be a little bit distant.

But the region is not a destination for the masses. I like that very much.

What must a hotel offer for you to feel comfortable?

Bierhoff: It needs to offer retreats and a calm atmosphere.

I set great store by good service. What is also interesting is what I feel I do not need in a hotel. For instance, it drives me crazy that the work desk in your room is usually cluttered. The first thing I do is put everything away so that I am able to work.

It’s even worse if the room attendant returns everything to its original place the next day. And the other thing I don’t like is people knocking on my door every few hours to put chocolates on my pillow or to check the minibar. I always put the “Do not disturb” sign out.

How does your team use the hotel? Which services are important?

Bierhoff: The public areas of the hotel are important. The meeting points. Our paths need to cross. A gourmet restaurant, on the other hand, is not important. We have our own chef travelling with us who advises on the menu, and the kitchen crew of the hotel follow his instructions. We don’t eat à la carte, as there is a buffet available three times a day. It’s important that everything is fresh and that the service is friendly and perfect. That’s why we are at the Giardino Ascona for the second time. Naturally, we also use the sauna, pool and bar.

Do you always book the whole hotel exclusively?

Bierhoff: We travel with a team of 70 people in total. That’s 23 players plus coaches and physiotherapists. We always try to book a hotel exclusively like we have done now at the Giardino.

This protects us from unwanted pictures. When the players are by the pool together and perhaps it gets a little bit loud, this is something that does not need to be documented.

But the players also post selfies?!

Bierhoff: It is a different scenario if Sami Khedira takes a picture of himself and four others by the pool and posts it than if someone hides behind the bushes and maybe takes a picture in an unfortunate moment. Posting pictures is part of many players’ lives. We do not forbid it but we do make sure that no sensitive images get out.

What would constitute a sensitive image?

Bierhoff: If a player is injured, all posts have to be approved by our public relations department. A tweet like: “Sitting in my room with a swollen knee and have to fly home” cannot go out before the official press release has been published. Furthermore, we have explained to the players that they need to post with respect in mind.

That means no damaging consequences for the team, no snide remarks about colleagues or other people. The privacy of others has to be respected at all times.

Do you visit Ticino in your spare time?

Bierhoff: I don’t go on holidays in Europe, I prefer Asia and the US. The reason is simple: I don’t get recognised there that often.

But you will always cross paths with a German or Italian at some point – I played in Italy for a long time.

Ein Moment, den man sich leisten sollte At the pool – a moment everyone should treat themselves to once in a while

einem teuren Hotel am Pool zu liegen, war das naive Bild von Glück, mit dem ich in meiner Adoleszenz durch Filme infiziert wurde.

Wer an einem Hotelpool liegt, hat es geschafft. Dachte ich in all den Jahren, in denen Pools mir unzugänglich erschienen. Umso mehr geniesse ich es heute. Ab und zu lungere ich am Pool, fühle mich genau so, wie ich es mir als Jugendliche vorgestellt habe. Reich. Irgendwann, in einem Alter, in dem wir Magazine wie dieses lesen, erlebt man das, wovor einen früher Ältere gewarnt haben: Die Zeit vergeht schneller. Es gibt viele Untersuchungen darüber, warum sich das subjektive Zeitempfinden im Alter so beschleunigt, und zwar bei allen, sodass man nicht mehr wirklich von Subjektivität reden kann. Sind es die Wiederholungen?

Sind es die Hormone? Sind es …? Egal! Wichtig ist nur, wie man mit dem Gefühl umgeht, dass alles so flüchtig wird. Und dass man sich beeilen muss mit dem, was man noch tun möchte. Vielleicht rast die Zeit auch so, weil wir uns über die Endlichkeit klar geworden sind und über den nicht vorhandenen Einfluss auf den Lauf der Dinge. Wir werden nicht alles haben können. Das Glück unserer Geburt an einem Ort in Europa, die Gesundheit, das feiert man nicht jeden Tag, es ist selbstverständlich und erzeugt kaum Vergnügen. Das Vergnügen ist weg, es ist durch leise Melancholie ersetzt worden. Nichts kann man beeinflussen, ausser vielleicht ein wenig das eigene Dasein. Falls man das Glück hat, über ein bisschen Geld zu verfügen und nicht krank zu sein, kann man sich jeden Tag gegen die Ohnmacht entscheiden, die zwangsläufig aus dem Konsum von Medien resultiert. Ich verstehe immer besser, warum sich manche Menschen in die Schönheit flüchten. Gute Bücher, Theater, Ballett, Musik. Hotelpools. Die Flucht in eine Parallelwelt. Ist man weder Bill Gates noch ein Revolutionsführer, ist es das Einzige, was man tun kann. Sich mit schönen Dingen umgeben, freundlich sein und niemandem schaden. Die Erkenntnis der Lebensmitte. Und nicht unbedingt die schlechteste.

Der Aufenthalt an einem schönen Pool, wie hier im Giardino, ist der kleine Luxusmoment, der mir das Gefühl gibt, es geschafft zu haben.

Ich denke für ein paar Stunden nicht über die Ungerechtigkeit auf der Welt nach, denke nicht daran, dass ich irgendwann meine Tasche wieder packen und aus dem geborgten Luxusparadies verschwinden muss. Die Zeit vergeht schneller. Und wer sich ein paar Momente in ein Paradies stehlen kann, sollte es unbedingt tun. Die berauschende Wirkung einer leichten Chlorbrise, eines guten Grüntees und der perfekten Wassertemperatur unter blauem Himmel, an dessen Horizont man Bergkuppen sieht, hält so lange an, bis man es sich noch einmal leisten kann.

lie by the pool of an expensive hotel – that was the naïve idea of happiness I developed from watching movies during my adolescence. People lounging by the hotel pool had made it. That’s what I thought all those years ago, when access to hotel pools seemed unattainable to me. And that’s why I enjoy it all the more now. From time to time, I hang out by the pool and feel exactly how I thought I would during my teens. Rich. But at some point, at an age when we read magazines like this one, we experience something our elders used to warn us about: time passes more quickly the older we get. Many studies have been conducted on the subject of why it feels like time speeds up as we age. With everything we do, time seems to move so quickly that we cannot talk about subjectivity anymore. Is it the repetitiveness? Is it hormones? Is it ...? No matter! What’s important is how you handle the feeling that everything is so fleeting and that you have to hurry up and accomplish everything you still wish to do. Maybe time flies because we have become more aware of our finitude and non-existent influence on the course of things. Unfortunately, we cannot have it all. The good fortune of being born somewhere in Europe and our health are two things we don’t celebrate every day.

Perhaps because they are evident and do not generate pleasure. The pleasure is gone and has been replaced by a soft melancholy. You cannot influence anything, except maybe who you are as a person.

If you are lucky, you have some money, you are not sick, and you can make a conscious decision every day against the lack of power instilled on you through media consumption. I understand more and more why some people take solace in beauty. Good books, theatre, ballet, music, hotel pools. It’s an escape into a parallel universe.

If you are neither Bill Gates nor a revolutionary leader, this is the only thing you can do. Surround yourself with beautiful things, be kind and do not harm anyone. That’s the enlightenment that comes with middle age. And it’s not a bad thought.

Time spent at a beautiful pool like the one here at the Giardino is a small moment of luxury that gives me the feeling that I have succeeded. For a few hours, I do not think about all the injustice in the world nor that at some point I will have to pack my bags again and leave this secluded and luxurious paradise. Time passes so quickly, so if you can steal a few moments in paradise, go for it. The invigorating influence of a gentle breeze of chlorine, a pot of good green tea, the perfect water temperature under endless blue skies and the mountaintops perfectly positioned on the horizon – these are the memories that will stay with you until you can afford it again.

Er besorgte schon Hundesitter in der Sprache von Herr und Tier («Chérie bellte angeblich auf Französisch») und liess für japanische Gäste auf Wunsch eine Kuh mit Blumenschmuck auf dem Hotelrasen grasen. In seiner inzwischen 30-jährigen Laufbahn hat Chefconcierge Claudio Caser schon vieles gesehen und einiges möglich gemacht. Sein Kapital sind sein Wissen, seine Erfahrung und der unnachahmliche Südtiroler Charme. In dieser Ausgabe verrät er seine Lieblingsplätze im Tessin.

MARVEL Ronco: The village behind Ascona has only around 650 inhabitants. Set in a truly spectacular location, it is a labyrinth of alleys, stairs and terraces. From there, you can see over the Brissago Islands far into Italy – a magnificent view!

EXPERIENCE Foroglio: The Niagara Falls pale against the Foroglio Falls!

With its 110-metre drop, it’s twice as high. The village carrying the same name at the end of the Bavona Valley just might be the last village in Europe still with a soul. Small stone cottages made of gneiss, and a restaurant in a grotto where you should definitely have a meal.

Ponte Brolla: The old railway bridge is a monument of contemporary history. In the past, this was where trains crossed the Maggia River. The bridge has just been renovated, and now hikers and cyclists who want to visit the Maggia Valley from Ascona can make use of it. ls erstes 5-Sterne-Hotel in der Schweiz wird das Giardino Ascona ab Frühjahr 2016 Ayurveda-Kuren und Ayurveda-Therapien anbieten. Daniela Frutiger aus der Geschäftsleitung der Giardino Group hat dafür hoch qualifizierte Mitarbeiter engagiert. Teamchef ist Umesh Tejasvi. Der gebürtige Inder studierte unter anderem am Sushrutha Medical College in Bangalore und wurde in der Schweiz auch durch sein Buch «Mein Ayurveda» bekannt.

Ayurveda ist eine jahrtausendealte Heilkunst, die auch die chinesische Medizin beeinflusst hat. Übersetzt bedeutet Ayurveda so viel wie «Wissenschaft vom Leben». Dessen Ursprung liegt nach ayurvedischer Lehre im eigenen Selbst. Es geht darum, die Gesundheit zu erhalten und das eigene Leben ganzheitlich zu betrachten. «In einer immer hektischer werdenden Welt brauchen wir Orte, die uns Kraft, Einsicht und Achtsamkeit zurückgeben. Ayurveda ist kein Trend, sondern eine Lebensphilosophie», sagt Daniela Frutiger. Mit den speziellen Ayurveda- und Yoga-Retreats und einer darauf abgestimmten Küche ist das Giardino Ascona dafür genau der richtige Ort.

It’s all about mindfulness!

Daniela Frutiger has developed the holistic concept of the Giardino hotels further by introducing Ayurveda and yoga retreats.

tarting this spring, the Giardino Ascona is set to become the first five-star hotel in Switzerland to offer Ayurveda cures and therapies. Leading the Ayurvedic programme will be Umesh Tejasvi. He and his highly qualified team have been hired by Daniela Frutiger, member of the executive team of the Giardino Group. Umesh Tejasvi, an Indian national, studied at the Sushrutha Medical College in Bangalore and became famous in Switzerland with his book “My Ayurveda”.

Ayurveda is an ancient medical science, which also influenced Chinese medicine.

The word Ayurveda means “science of life”. The root of Ayurvedic science lies within ourselves. It focuses on preserving one’s health and encourages one to view one’s life holistically. “In an increasingly hectic world, we need places that give us back our strength, insight and mindfulness. Ayurveda is not a trend, it’s a life philosophy,” explains Daniela Frutiger.

With its Ayurveda and yoga retreats and perfectly balanced cuisine to match, the Giardino Ascona is exactly that kind of place.

2’199 Meter können verdammt lang sein. Vor allem in der Bergbahn, die zum Muottas Muragl hochfährt und an diesem Morgen voll ist wie eine Dose mit Ölsardinen. Ich stehe ganz vorne, meine Nase klebt an der Frontscheibe, und wenn die Russin hinter mir einatmet, werde ich von ihrem stolzen Busen erdrückt. Die Luft tut ihr Übriges.

Es mischt sich der Geruch von schwierigem Parfüm mit Leberwurst auf Pausenbrot, das in einem dieser unzähligen Rucksäcke steckt. Aber ich bin wohl der einzige Klaustrophobische – alle anderen plaudern wild und laut und freudig durcheinander: russisch, polnisch, schweizerdeutsch, englisch. Wer frühmorgens durch die Bergwelt zieht, hat gute Laune, auch wenns mal eng wird.

später selbst. Segantini riss mit 13 aus, wurde auf der Strasse aufgegriffen und in eine sogenannte Besserungsanstalt gebracht. Dort entdeckte ein Geistlicher sein Talent. Später studierte er an der Kunstakademie Mailand. Nur die letzten fünf Jahre bis zu seinem Tod hat der Maler im Engadin gelebt. Heute gilt er als dessen Botschafter. «An manchen Morgen», schrieb er, «während ich minutenlang diese Berge betrachte, noch bevor ich zum Pinsel greife, fühle ich mich bedrängt, mich vor ihnen niederzuwerfen als vor lauter unter dem Himmel aufgerichteten Altären.»

Oben ist es wirklich schön. Kaum sind wir losgelaufen, um den Schafberg zu erklimmen und die legendäre Segantini­hütte zu besuchen, hat sich die Menschentraube aufgelöst. Die Luft: phänomenal.

So gut, dass man gleich mal den Komponisten Richard Strauss mit den besten Sätzen zitieren möchte, die jemals über das Engadin gesagt wurden: «Wir sind hier restlos begeistert und schlürfen die Luft der Gämsen wie französischen Champagner!

Kein Wunder, dass der gute Nietzsche hier übergeschnappt ist.» Die Vorstellung, dass nicht nur Segantini, sondern auch der gute Strauss hier möglicherweise entlang­ gewandert ist, löst Ehrfurcht aus. Die Natur tut das Übrige. Hier ist alles gewaltig.

Die Ausblicke, die schwarzen Kühe, die uns entgegenmuhen, und natürlich das Licht, das der Maler Giovanni Segantini (1858 bis 1899) in seinen Bildern so einmalig eingefangen hat. Er erhellte das romantisierte Dunkel der Berge und gilt als der Erneuerer der Alpenmalerei.

Vor der Hütte, die wir in einer Stunde erreichen werden, hat Segantini sein berühmtes Alpentriptychon geschaffen: «La Vita – La Natura – La Morte».

Die drei Werke sind im Segantini-Museum in St. Moritz zu bewundern. Bis wir oben sind, fliesst noch viel Schweiss die Schläfen hinab.

Es geht steil hinauf. Anfangs haben wir uns noch unter­halten, jetzt schweigen wir, konzentrieren uns aufs Wandern. Ein älterer Herr mit Dackel überholt uns – wir überholen eine krebsrot verbrannte Frau, die sich mit ihren Flip-Flops schwertut. Was nicht verwundert: Das Wort birgt ja den Flop in sich! Inzwischen besteht der Weg nur noch aus Felsstufen und ist zuweilen so schmal, dass Sicherheitsseile vor den Abgrund gespannt sind. Wir lassen es gemächlich angehen und sind erstaunt, was in dieser schwindelerregenden Höhe alles wächst: Enzian, Hahnenfuss und dreizähniges Knabenkraut.

Segantini kam im österreichischen Arco zur Welt. Seine Kindheit war vom Tod geprägt: Kurz vor seiner Geburt starb sein Bruder.

an einer Bauchfellentzündung. Zehn Tage soll er hier gelegen haben; er konnte nicht mehr ins Tal transportiert werden. Schon lange ist die Hütte in 2’731 Meter Höhe eine Wallfahrtsstätte. An diesem Morgen sitzen hier: der Welterklärer, der seiner Frau jeden Gipfel erläutert, der stille Geniesser mit Butterbrot und hart gekochten Eiern, der bärtige Bergfex und zwei Japaner, die um den halben Erdball geflogen sind, um mit eigenen Augen zu sehen, was sich bis Yokohama herumgesprochen hat: Segantini war ein Jahrhundertmaler. Wer einmal vor dieser Hütte gesessen hat, versteht seine

Pontresina führt an einigen Stellen steil hinunter. In die Stille mischen sich nur die Geräusche unserer Fusstritte oder das kurze, schrille Pfeifen eines Murmeltiers.

Für eine weitere Stunde sind wir fernab von allem. Diese Isoliertheit vom Welt­geschehen hat Segantinis besten Bildern eine ungeheure Kraft verliehen. Spätnachmittags kehren wir mit müden Füssen ins Giardino zurück. Jetzt ab ins dipiù Spa zu einem Peeling mit vorgewärmtem Meersalz und anschliessend zu einer Massage mit Rosmarin-Avocado-Öl.

Faszination für die Berge. Der Blick reicht auf die Oberengadiner Seenplatte mit St. Moritz, Silvaplana, Sils Maria und Maloja sowie ins tief eingeschnittene Rosegtal mit den darüber thronenden Gletscherwänden. Wer dazu eine Graupensuppe isst, die hier ganz wunderbar schmeckt, und ein Bier trinkt, weiss, was Glück heisst. Man sieht es in den Gesichtern der Wanderer. Und der Dackel ist hier oben so ausser sich, dass er versucht, einen Jagdhund zu bespringen.

2,199 metres can be an extremely long way.

Especially in the packed cable car going up to Muottas Muragl, leaving me feeling like a sardine in a tin. I am standing right at the front, my nose squashed against the window, and every time the Russian lady behind me breathes in, her ample bosom flattens me. The air does not help.

The distinctive fragrance of a liver pâté sandwich wafts from one of the numerous backpacks. But I seem to be the only claustrophobic one here – everybody else is chatting wildly, loudly and enthusi­ astically. Russian. Polish. Swiss German. English. Those who are out and about at this early hour are definitely cheerful, even if personal space is in short supply.

We arrive up on the mountain, and it really is beautiful. By the time we head off to climb up the Schafberg to visit the legendary Segantini mountain hut, the masses have fallen away. The air is phenomenal. It feels right to quote the composer Richard Strauss with the best sentences ever muttered about the Engadine: “We are utterly enthralled and sip the air of the mountain chamois like French champagne! No wonder that good old Nietzsche went crazy here.” Imagine, not only Segantini but even Strauss most probably had walked along these paths; it is awe-inspiring. Nature does the rest.

Everything is immense. The views, the black cows that moo at the sight of us, and natur-​ ally the light that painter Giovanni Segantini (1858 to 1899) captured so brilliantly in his works. He brightened up the romanticised darkness of the mountains and is said to be the innovator of the Alpine painting.

Segantini was born in Arco, Austria.

His childhood was shaped by death. Shortly before he was born, his brother died. His mother passed away when he was seven.

His father took him to Milan to stay with a daughter from a previous marriage and then died shortly afterwards. Segantini ran away when he was 13 and was picked up from the streets and sent to a reformatory.

One of the clergymen at the reformatory discovered his talent, and later he went to study at the Academy of Arts in Milan.

Only during the last five years of his life did the painter live in the Engadine. Today, he is seen as its ambassador. “On certain mornings,” he wrote, “while I am studying those mountains for a few minutes, even before I pick up my brush, I have the urge to throw myself down in front of them as if they are altars set up under the sky.”

Sitting in front of his hut, which takes about an hour to reach, Segantini created his famous Alpine triptych: “La Vita – La Natura – La Morte”. All three paintings are exhibited at the Segantini Museum in St. Moritz.

Before we reach the top, a lot more sweat runs down our faces. It is a steep ascent.

At the beginning, we were still chatting, now we are silent, purely concentrating on hiking. An elderly gentleman with his dachshund overtakes us – we in turn overtake a lobster-red lady who is having a difficult time in her flip-flops. Not surprisingly: the word “flop“ says it all. By now, the path consists only of rocky steps and is sometimes so narrow that safety ropes have been strung alongside the abyss. We take it slowly and are surprised to see what still grows in these staggering heights: gentians, buttercups and threetoothed orchids.

Shortly before the Segantini hut is a red box with the Swiss cross. This must be the most precious freestanding toilet in the Alps. It’s quite a contrast to the old and minuscule stone hut which Segantini painted and where he died, presumably of periton­ itis. He was said to have laid here for ten days as he could not be transported down to the valley

up here, and drinking beer know what happiness is. You can see it in their faces.

Even the dachshund is beside himself trying to attract the attention of a hound.

The descent, leading partly over rocky debris, is no walk in the park. The path to Pontresina is quite steep at times. The silence is broken only by the noise of our footsteps or the short, piercing whistles of the marmots. For another hour, we are far, far away from everything. It’s this isolation from world events that lent Segantini’s paintings their unimaginable power. Late in the afternoon we return to the Giardino on tired feet. All that’s left to do is to head to the dipiù Spa for a scrub with preheated sea salt followed by a massage with rosemary-avocado oil. What a day!

Der Malojawind macht das Windsurfen im Engadin zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis. Philippe Frutiger, CEO der Giardino Group, tauscht auch gerne einmal das Jackett gegen den Neoprenanzug ein – und nimmt Gäste auf Wunsch mit hinaus auf den Silvaplanersee.

it 12 Jahren hatte Philippe Frutiger ein Vorbild. Das Vorbild kam aus Amerika, hiess Robby Naish und war der wohl bekannteste und erfolgreichste Windsurfer der Welt. Philippe Frutiger kaufte sich ein Brett, liess keine freie Minute aus, um das Surfen zu lernen, und wurde schnell ein Crack. «Windsurfen war damals der Inbegriff der Freiheit», erzählt er, «und unheimlich cool.» Er hat als Surflehrer am Silvaplanersee während ein paar Saisons unterrichtet und für die Leidenschaft auf dem Board auch eine Zeit lang in Australien gelebt. Diese Leidenschaft hat ihm manche Rippenprellung, mehrmals offene Hände und gelegentlich eine angeknackste Schulter eingebracht – aber auch ein Gespür für seine Karriere als Hotelmanager: In stürmischen Zeiten weiss der heute 47-jährige CEO der Giardino Group das Segel sicher zu setzen. Mit Daniela Frutiger, seiner Frau, hat er die Hotelgruppe aufgebaut, und gemeinsam entwickeln sie das Unternehmen weiter. Natürlich ist das Surfen seine Leidenschaft geblieben. Allerdings hat er dafür nur noch bedingt Zeit.

An den Wochenenden im Sommer tauscht Philippe Frutiger das Jackett schon einmal gegen den Neoprenanzug ein. Dann sieht man ihn auf dem Silvaplanersee mit unzähligen Surfcracks, die aus der ganzen Welt ins Engadin angereist sind: Sie alle kreuzen im berühmten Maloja­wind.

«Er kommt nachmittags und ist so verlässlich wie ein Schweizer Uhrwerk», erklärt Philippe Frutiger. «Er entsteht im Sommer durch den Temperaturunterschied zwischen der heissen Region Comer See und dem kühlen Bergtal des Engadins.» Seine Söhne Justin und Morris sind oft dabei. Philippe Frutiger sagt: «Mit den Jungs bei Starkwind zu surfen, macht mich sehr stolz.

Inzwischen muss ich mich anstrengen, damit sie nicht an mir vorbeiziehen.» Und wenn es sich ergibt, nehmen sie auch Gäste des Giardino Mountain mit. Er habe viele Surfparadiese auf der Welt gesehen, sagt er, das Engadin beeindrucke ihn jedoch nach wie vor: «Das Panorama dieses Tals mit dem klaren, türkisfarbenen Wasser der Seen ist einzig­artig.»

The Maloja winds make windsurfing in the Engadine an unforgettable experience. Philippe Frutiger, CEO of the Giardino Group, likes to swap his jacket for a wetsuit from time to time – and he even takes guests along for the ride on Lake Silvaplaner.

hen he was 12 years old, Philippe Frutiger had a role model. This role model was an American by the name of Robby Naish, probably the most famous and most successful windsurfer in the world. Philippe Frutiger bought a surfboard and used every opportunity to learn how to surf, quickly becoming very proficient.

“Windsurfing was the epitome of freedom”, he explains, “and very, very cool.” He taught windsurfing for a few seasons at Lake Silvaplaner, and even moved to Australia for a while to truly live his passion. This passion earned him some bruised ribs, many a cut on his hands, and sometimes a sprained shoulder. But it also taught him an important lesson for his career as hotel manager: during stormy times, the 47-year-old CEO of the Giardino Group knows how to set a firm course. Together with his wife Daniela Frutiger, with whom he built up the hotel group, he constantly strives to develop the company further. Naturally, windsurfing is still his passion, but he currently has limited time for it.

On summer weekends, Philippe Frutiger swaps his jacket for a wetsuit. You will then see him on Lake Silvaplaner with numerous other windsurfing addicts who have travelled to the Engadine from all over the world. They’re all sailing in the famous Maloja wind.

“It arrives in the afternoon, as reliable as a Swiss watch”, says Philippe Frutiger. “It is a result of the temperature difference between the hot region of Lake Como and the cool mountain valley of the Engadine.” He is often accompanied by his sons, Justin and Morris.

“Windsurfing with my sons in strong winds makes me proud, but these days I really need to make an effort not to let them overtake me.” If the opportunity arises, they take a few guests from the Giardino Mountain with them. He has seen many surfers’ paradises on this planet, but the Engadine impresses him every time. “The panorama of the valley with the crystal clear and turquoise-coloured water of the lake is unique.”

Vom Bett aufs Brett Von Charlotte de Bonnier Wenn ich sommers im Giardino Lago erwache, die Morgen­ sonne noch hinter den Bergen steckt und der See mit seiner monochromen Oberfläche still ruht, schnappe ich mir oft ein Board und ein Paddel und fahre hinaus. Vor einigen Jahren habe ich das Stand-up-Paddeln für mich entdeckt. Es ist Sport im besten Sinne: Beine und Unterkörper halten die Balance, Schultern und Arme paddeln wie beim Kanufahren. Man merkt die Anstrengung schon nach ein paar Minuten, und ich frage mich, wie die Fischer vor der Küste Tahitis so, stundenlang in ihren Kanus stehend, übers Meer zogen – angeblich gaben sie die Initialzündung für das heutige Stand-up-Paddeln.

Zwischendurch jedoch paddle ich gar nicht, sondern bleibe einfach auf dem Brett stehen und geniesse die Kulisse des Lago Maggiore: das von Palmen und Platanen gesäumte Ufer und die majestätischen Höhen der umliegenden Bergkuppen.

Bis zu den Brissago-Inseln habe ich es einmal geschafft. Und wenn ich zurück bin, haben die Mitarbeitenden des Hotels bereits ein wunderbares Frühstücksbuffet aufgebaut.

Dann setze ich mich auf die Terrasse und geniesse das Glück.

When I wake up at Giardino Lago in summer, with the morning sun still hiding behind the mountains and the mono­chrome surface of the lake surface beautifully still and calm, I often grab my board and paddle and head out onto the water. I discovered stand-up paddleboarding a few years ago. It is a sport in the true sense of the word – your legs and lower body keep you balanced, while your shoulders and arms get a workout paddling as you would canoeing. You can feel the effort after just a few minutes. I wonder how the fishermen on the coast of Tahiti used to stand in their canoes and glide across the sea for hours – they were supposedly the inspiration for stand-up

paddleboarding today. It’s important to keep switching the side you paddle on. Now and then I don’t paddle at all, but simply stand on the board and enjoy the spectacular backdrop of Lago Maggiore – the promenade lined by palms and plane trees, the majestic peaks. I made it all the way to the Brissago Islands once.

And when I come back, a fantastic buffet breakfast awaits me at the hotel. I sit on the terrace and think how lucky I am. It’s bliss.

Von Tomas Niederberghaus Es gibt Mutproben im Leben eines jungen Mannes, die er bestehen muss. Der erste Kuss gehört dazu, der erste Sprung vom Dreimeterbrett und die erste grosse sportliche Herausforderung. Meine fand auf dem Lago Maggiore statt.

Ich lag im Wasser, die Spitzen der beiden Skier schauten nach oben, und eine lange Leine verband mich mit dem Boot.

Kurt, der Vater eines Freundes, sass am Steuer, gab mir zuerst ein Zeichen und dann richtig Gas. Mit einem Ruck spannten sich das Seil und mein Körper, die Skier flatterten hin und her, und kurz darauf stand ich auf ihnen. Na ja, was man halt so stehen nennt. Ich eierte mit der Haltung eines krummen Hechts dahin, und als Kurt eine Kurve fuhr, flog ich sogleich raus.

Wer einmal mit ​30 Stunden­ kilometern aufs Wasser geknallt ist, weiss, dass das nicht das Schönste ist. Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass der komplette Lago Maggiore mit einem Schlag durch alle Körperöffnungen in

By Tomas Niederberghaus mich eingeschossen war. Der Po schmerzte noch am Abend, ganz zu schweigen vom Rücken. Nach ein paar Tagen jedoch gab ich auf dem Wasser bereits eine gute Figur ab. Es machte richtig Spass. Nachdem das Wasser­ skifahren ein bisschen aus der Mode gekommen war, steht es inzwischen wieder ganz oben auf der Liste der sommerlichen Wassersportarten. Miroslav Klose, der nicht nur ein guter Fussballer, sondern auch ein ebensolcher Wasserskifahrer ist, hat unlängst gesagt: «Wer Wasserski fährt, braucht Muskelmasse.» Schauspielerin Veronica Ferres, ebenfalls eine Wasser(ski)ratte, sieht das genauso: «Fühlen Sie mal meinen Oberarm.» Nur Schmusebarde Enrique Iglesias braucht dafür gar nichts. Vor der Fussball-WM in Südafrika versprach er bei einer Wette, dass er im Fall eines Sieges der Spanier Wasserski fahren werde, und zwar nackt.

Die Wette hat er tatsächlich eingelöst. Auch eine Mutprobe!

Selbst erleben Gäste des Giardino Lago und des Giardino Ascona können die Sportjacht des Hotels samt Skipper mieten und während der Ausflüge zwischendurch auch Wasserski fahren. Auskünfte an der Rezeption.

There are tests of bravery that young men have to pass – the first kiss, the first dive from a three-metre springboard, the first real sporting challenge.

Mine was on Lago Maggiore.

I lay in the water, with the tips of both skis pointing upwards and a long rope attaching me to the boat. Kurt, the father of a friend of mine, sat at the wheel, gave me a signal and stepped on the gas. With a jerk, the rope stretched and my whole body tensed, the skis skittered all over the place and then suddenly, as if by magic, I was standing on them.

Well, if you can call it standing.

I wobbled around, with the posture of a crooked pike.

When Kurt went around a curve, I lost my balance straight away.

And trust me, when you hit the water at 30 kph, you know all about it. I felt Lago Maggiore thrash every part of my body.

My backside still hurt that evening, not to mention my back. After a few days, though, I was already doing my first

figure on the water. It was so much fun. Waterskiing went out of fashion for a while, but now it’s back at the top of the list of summer sports. Miroslav Klose, who is not only a great football player but also a talented water skier, recently said: “Water skiers need muscle mass.” Also a waterskiing fan, actress Veronica Ferres agrees with him. “Feel my upper arm,” she says. Only Spanish pop singer Enrique Iglesias didn’t need anything at all. Before the World Cup in South Africa, he made a bet, vowing to waterski naked if Spain won.

He honoured his promise – you could also call that a test of bravery.

Man kann von der Schweiz nach Italien fahren – mit dem Auto, mit dem Motorroller oder mit dem Fahrrad. Man kann die Grenze auch bei einer Wanderung überqueren. Aber das Schönste ist – und dafür ist der Lago Maggiore einmalig –, bis Italien und zurück zu segeln. Im Frühjahr und Herbst bläst der Wind oft recht heftig, aber auch im Sommer ist er nicht nur mau.

Wenn die Berge etwas im Dunst verschwimmen, herrscht frühmorgens ein Nordwind und mittags der sogenannte Inverna, ein Talwind, der das Segelboot übers Wasser gleiten lässt. Die Kraft der Natur zu nutzen und sich dabei fortzubewegen, ist auf dem Lago ein unvergessliches Erlebnis.

You can easily drive or cycle to Italy from Switzerland, or even cross the border on foot. But nothing beats sailing over to Italy and back – and that’s where Lago Maggiore is unique. Stiff winds blow in spring and autumn, but there’s often also a good breeze in summer. When the mountains are enshrouded in mist, sailors harness the early morning north wind and at midday, the so-called Inverna, a valley wind that allows boats to simply glide across the water. Making the most of the power of nature and practising sport at the same time is an unforgettable experience on Lago Maggiore.

Schwimmen zu können, ist eine elementare Fähigkeit. Platon stellte das Schwimmen sogar auf eine Stufe mit dem Lesen.

«Unwissende», schrieb er, seien ihm jene, «die weder schreiben noch schwimmen können.»

Und es stimmt: Lesen und Schwimmen erscheinen einem existenziell. Vielleicht erinnert man sich deshalb ans Schwimmenlernen genauso gut wie ans Lesenlernen. Ich weiss noch, wie stolz ich nach der ersten bestandenen Schwimmprüfung mit dem «Seepferdchen» nach Hause kam – und meine Grossmutter die kleine grüne Stoffplakette auf meiner Badehose festnähte. Seitdem lasse ich auf Reisen oder im Urlaub kein Becken und keinen

See aus. Im klaren weichen Wasser des Lago Maggiore mit seiner schier endlosen Weite ist es ein besonderes Vergnügen, kopfüber hineinzuspringen und nach kurzer Zeit nur noch das Geräusch des Wassers zu hören, das durch das Kraulen mit den Armen entsteht. Es gleicht einer Meditation. Dies sind Momente, in denen ich dann gar nichts mehr wahrnehme und nur noch mein Körper zu existieren scheint. Hunderte von Metern geht es so durchs Wasser.

Nach einer halben Stunde oder auch einer ganzen kehre ich wieder zurück, um mich dann auf einer Liege mit einem Drink zu entspannen und ein bisschen zu lesen – das ist Sommerfrische pur!

Swimming is a basic skill. Plato once put swimming on a par with reading, believing that those who could “neither write nor swim” were “ignorant”.

And it’s true – reading and swimming seem somehow existential. Perhaps that is why we remember how we learnt to swim just as vividly as how we learnt to read. I can still picture how proud I was when I came home with the seahorse badge for passing my first swimming course – and how my grand­ mother sewed the little green badge onto my bathing trunks.

Since then, I’ve never missed an opportunity to dive into the nearest pool or lake when on my travels. It’s a particular pleasure to swim in the clear,

soft waters of the seemingly endless Lago Maggiore.

Plunging in and listening to the sound the water makes as my arms slice through it is a kind of meditation for me. There are moments when I forget all thoughts and only my body seems to exist. I swim front crawl for hundreds of metres, then, after 30 minutes or an hour, I head back. Afterwards, I like to relax on a sunlounger, sip a drink and maybe read for a while – that’s my idea of summer heaven.

ie ist von H&M. Sie mutet wie echtes Leder an, ist aber aus Kunstleder und hat einen Druck, der an die Haut eines Reptils erinnert: Seit Jahren habe ich die Tasche auf Reisen dabei. Sie war schon in New York, in Paris und in Minusio.

Auch die anderen Sachen begleiten mich auf jeder Tour. Zum Beispiel der dunkle Overall. Ich liebe ihn. All-in-one-Kleidungsstück. Da brauche ich nur noch einen Kaschmir-BaumwollSchal von Fabric Frontline und einen guten Schuh – schon sehe ich immer gut aus. Zwei paar Schuhe sind Pflicht im Gepäck: Der klassische Pigalle von Christian Louboutin ist für abends und passt zu jedem Anlass. Die roten Schuhe sind von Prada und perfekt für den Tag danach, wenn die Füsse wieder etwas Erholung benötigen. Ich kombiniere sie meistens zu der Jeans-Jogginghose. I never compromise on style – deshalb sind viele Sachen ganz schlicht: mein lachsfarbener Blazer, mein Everyday-Diamond-Ring von Kurz und meine metallicfarbene Clutch der Schweizer Marke 0714. Das Parfüm Blue von Ralph Lauren kann man zweifellos schon als eines meiner Markenzeichen betrachten. Es riecht blumig und frisch. Ganz wichtig im Gepäck sind auch die Abschminktücher von Filabé (mit Pflegezusatz!) und die Arganöl-Seife in der hübschen marokkanischen Schatulle. Die Seife ist so reichhaltig, dass sie mir auf Kurztrips eine Bodylotion erspart.

Und dann ist da noch mein kleiner Buddha. Ich habe ihn vor Jahren aus Goa mitgebracht. Zusammen mit der Mala-Kette von Zineta Blank ist er auf Reisen wie ein Stück Heimat. Das Schwarze mit dem Rot ist übrigens meine Musikbox. I never leave home without it!

y bag is from H&M. It looks like real leather but it’s synthetic and has a faux reptile print. I’ve travelled with this bag for years – it’s been with me to New York, Paris and Minusio. Other things also come with me on every trip – for instance, my dark jumpsuit. I love it. It has everything!

Teamed with my cashmere-cotton scarf from Fabric Frontline and some nice shoes, it’s an effortless outfit. I always take two pairs of shoes – classic Pigalle heels by Christian Louboutin for the evening, which are perfect for any event, and my red Prada flats for the day after, when my feet are crying out for something more comfortable. I usually pair them with denim joggers. I never compromise on style, which is why much of my wardrobe is sleek and simple – such as my salmon-coloured blazer, my Everyday Diamond ring by Kurz and my metallic clutch by Swiss brand 0714. My trademark scent is Ralph Lauren Blue, which smells floral and fresh. Also in my bag are soothing Filabé make-up remover wipes and argan oil soap in a pretty Moroccan casket.

The soap is so rich that I don’t even need to take body lotion on short trips. And then there is my little Buddha, which I bought in Goa years ago. Together with the mala beads by Zineta Blank, it’s like a piece of home on my travels. The black and red box, by the way, is my music box – I never leave home without it!
