OUR VISION ART IS THE REASON THE GIBBES MUSEUM PROVES THAT ART HAS THE POWER TO ENHANCE AND TRANSFORM LIVES. We are the crucial setting for active and creative immersion in the world of art and artists. We present relevant and dynamic programs originating from our collection, scholarship, exhibitions, artist studios, and classrooms. We strive to reflect the vast diversity of the communities we serve through our visitors, members, volunteers, Board of Directors and staff and to present our collection and educational experiences in new settings that will reach all those communities. LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & BOARD CHAIR
ANGELA D. MACK President and CEO
SPENCER J. LYNCH Chair, Board of Directors
We are proud the Gibbes is recognized by community leaders yearly for its ever-changing, dynamic exhibitions that engage repeat visitors. In 2022–23, our exhibitions focused on the themes of conservation/environment with Bo Bartlett: Earthly Matters and Un/Natural Selections: Wildlife and Contemporary Art, and health/wellness with Damian Stamer: Ruminations and Beverly McIver: Full Circle. The timeliness of these exhibitions is underscored by the local and national press coverage they have received and the comments from our members and visitors. It was truly a forward-thinking year for the Gibbes when we welcomed Senior art critic of New York Magazine, Jerry Saltz as our 2022 Gibbes Distinguished Lecture Speaker. While Jerry has become known for his vast following on Instagram, he also explores the art of our time. In his newest book, Art is Life, he explains that “Southern art is the mind of America.” We could not agree more as we have witnessed the vast creativity coming from southern artists through our own Society 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art. We honored Raheleh Filsoofi whose “art disrupts the borders that exist between us” to ensure “a more inclusive world, illuminating and challenging policies and politics.” We were thrilled to welcome Arthur Lewis, UTA Partner, Creative Director, and leading contemporary art collector during the Art of Design luncheon as part of our second annual Art Charleston week. Lewis, a New Orleans native is at the forefront of the contemporary art scene as a partner at United Talent Agency (UTA), one of the largest talent agencies in Hollywood representing some of the biggest names in entertainment. In 2015, UTA expanded into the Fine Arts division, and, most recently, Lewis opened a new UTA satellite office in Atlanta. Again, we see the amazing talent coming out of the South, and Lewis stands poised to make a definitive impact. Key partnerships and funding, which we have highlighted throughout this report, allowed us to engage our community through transformative educational programs and events. We went beyond the walls of the Museum with an event entitled REFRAME where we used our Visiting Artists to help us engage a local neighborhood community and challenge them to find creativity within themselves. In tandem with our exhibition, From Chaos to Order: Greek Geometric Art from the Sol Rabin Collection, we offered a live, all-female production of the ancient Greek tragedy Antigone, which explored both timeless themes and contemporary issues. We continued to push the boundaries with our second annual visual arts festival Art Charleston, April 26-30, 2023. We welcomed the renowned, hometown, Grammy-winning Ranky Tanky for a fabulous concert in the Gibbes’ Lenhardt Garden, and were the first arts organization group to host an evening at Beeple’s new gallery in Charleston. We are proud of the fact that Art Charleston is gaining recognition as a significant visual arts festival while also successfully raising over $800,000 in the past two years to support the mission of the Gibbes. Finally, we are overwhelmed and deeply grateful for the recent gift of The Rivers Collection into the Gibbes permanent collection. Negotiations began in spring of 2023 and were concluded in September. Our sincere thanks to John Rivers for his wonderful generosity. And to our amazing community who imagines with us, who questions, and who explores, thank you for your continued dedication, belief, and support in the power of art.

B O B A R T L E T T: E A R T H LY M AT T E R S SEPTEMBER 9, 2022 – JANUARY 15, 2023
PUSH THE BOUNDARIES The Gibbes Museum of Art, in 2022–23, presented transformative exhibitions focused on topics such as humanity, identity, beauty, sustainability, and conservation. Through each show, viewers engaged in the visual art while considering the underlying narratives, often influenced by the viewer’s own unique experience. With the start of the visual arts season, the exhibition, Bo Bartlett: Earthly Matters, September 9, 2022 – January 15, 2023, explored human impact on and interaction with the natural world. Bartlett’s subjects find themselves in precarious environmental situations, either from their own doing or by forces beyond their control. His larger-than-life scenes break down the barriers between the subjects on canvas and the viewers who are invited to contemplate their role in the narrative. While Earthly Matters provided the notion of disruption, the exhibition, From Chaos to Order: Greek Geometric Art from the Sol Rabin Collection, October 14, 2022 – March 5, 2023 examined the idea of “the beautiful” or “kallos” through a focus on the aesthetics of Greek Geometric art. Additionally, the show furthered the idea of human innovation and the enduring legacy provided by the innovations of this art.

Selections: Wildlife in Contemporary Art, February 3 – April 16, 2023, organized by the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Whereas Earthly Matters focused on humanity’s impact and interaction with the natural environment, Un/Natural Selections explored the way we use animal imagery to tackle human concerns. In this show, a diverse group of artists highlight animal imagery to address humanity’s interconnectedness with the natural world. The last two shows of the season explored the intersection between past and present and the personal journeys of the artists. Damian Stamer: Ruminations, March 17 – October 15, 2023 showcased contemporary painter Damien Stamer utilizing vernacular structures of the rural South through abstraction and representation to emphasize the
old and the new through the implementation of new modes of technology and expression. Rounding out the year, the Gibbes presented Beverly McIver: Full Circle, April 28 – August 4, 2023, organized by the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art and curated by Kim Boganey, Arts and Culture Manager, Museum of History and Art, Ontario, California. This exhibition presented the career arc and the continued ascent of contemporary artist Beverly McIver. Her show was a full circle for the artist herself as it featured nearly fifty works from the last twenty-five years demonstrating the diversity of the artist’s bold thematic approach to portrait painting. Her work explored expressions of individuality, stereotypes, and ways of masking identity, which included family members and friends seen through glimpses of intimate life moments, in good times as well as in illness and death.

The Gibbes strives to present exhibitions and acquire works of art for its collection that touch Charleston while connecting the Gibbes to the wider world of artists and museums. Over the course of the year the Museum presented six special exhibitions, two of which were organized by the Gibbes and traveled to four other museum institutions across Geogia, Florida and North Carolina, and three that engaged the Gibbes in new partnerships with museums in Wyoming, Florida and Arizona. The Gibbes loaned nine individual works from its permanent collection to exhibitions organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, The Mint Museum, and the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. The Collections and Exhibitions department fielded over 200 requests for research, publication images, and general artwork inquiries. Special projects launched during this year included the Centering Art | Voices initiative—a community engagement process to re-imagine the Gibbes Collection in preparation for a reinterpretation of the permanent galleries—and the application for reaccreditation from the American Alliance of Museums. The Gibbes has been an accredited museum since 1972 when the national program was originally launched. The Collections and Exhibitions department also welcomed three new staff members after the retirements of collections manager, Deborah Nobles-McDaniel, and departure of head preparator Chris Pelletier. Teresa Muñoz, curatorial assistant, Maggie Claytor, associate registrar, and David Petitpain, head preparator, joined the staff in January and June.

The Gibbes launched an exciting new initiative, CENTERING ART | VOICES, designed to re-envision more inclusive, diverse, and accessible ways we present artwork in our permanent collection. Phase one of this initiative involved an open call to the entire Charleston community for a series of Listening Conversations. Over 70 people participated in the six two-hour sessions. This included first time visitors as well as members, donors, community partners and volunteers. Gibbes’ consultant, Dr. Karen Chandler, Associate Professor Emerita, Arts Management Program at the College of Charleston along with the Gibbes’ curatorial and education teams, created fun and engaging sessions for participants. They viewed and interacted
with key art from the permanent collection and helped in imagining new ways of exhibiting them. Phase two of the CENTERING ART I VOICES initiative was launched over the summer. Nearly forty people over a 4-day period—including a diverse group of people who were involved in April’s Listening Conversations, several board members, and staff from a multitude of departments participated in our Interpretive Charrettes. Facilitated by Dr. Chandler, the groups engaged in creative exercises aimed at learning more about how we might reinterpret the Gibbes collection by broadening the narratives, creating more accessible entry points and increasing interactivity between the art and our visitors. The ideas generated in this initiative will inform our educational and curatorial interpretive plans as we move forward to meet our DEAI initiatives and the goals set forth in the strategic plan.

silver were dispersing outside the Charleston area, Mr. Rivers made it a personal mission to preserve these exquisite works for display in his home city. Over the last 30 years, The Rivers Collection has grown steadily, and since 2016 Mr. Rivers has generously lent objects to the Gibbes Museum of Art, introducing Charleston’s rich history of craftsmanship to all the Museum’s visitors. “We couldn’t be happier that Mr. Rivers made this incredibly generous decision to gift 44 objects from his renowned collection to the Gibbes,” said the Museum’s Board Chair Spencer Lynch, who worked closely with Mr. Rivers and fellow board of director members Ben Lenhardt, and Helen Pratt-Thomas to bring this donation to fruition. These objects were first exhibited at the Gibbes in 2007 in the exhibition Southern Masterpieces curated by then chief curator of the Gibbes and now president and CEO Angela Mack. Displayed alongside objects from Colonial Williamsburg and the Museum of Early Southern Decoratives Arts, the exhibition and collection were recognized in an article by the New York Times.
JOHN M. RIVERS COLLECTION The Gibbes Museum of Art, home to the foremost collection of American art that incorporates the story of Charleston, has received a donation of 44 objects from the private collection of John M. Rivers. The Rivers Collection of Charleston-made furniture and silver is one of the most prestigious and comprehensive collections of its kind in the world. The gift made in September 2023 includes extraordinary examples of grand, eighteenth-century case furniture and silverworks. These pieces are currently on view for the public, prominently featured in the Museum’s Kim and Jim Pallotta Gallery. John M. Rivers Jr., whose family has been in Charleston continuously since 1670, began forming the Rivers Collection in 1988. Recognizing that significant examples of Charleston furniture and

The gift includes a secretary press attributed to cabinetmaker Jacob Sass who was born in Germany in 1750 and immigrated to Charleston in 1773. Sass operated one of the busiest and most successful cabinet shops in Charleston. Craftsmen working in shops like Sass’s included enslaved Africans and African Americans as well as immigrant European journeymen. The fine craftsmanship in major furniture pieces like the secretary press and the inlaid mahogany stage-top sideboard demonstrate the sophisticated artisan skills present in 18th and 19thcentury Charleston. These works are accompanied by examples of metalworks including silverworks by known Charleston silversmiths John Ewan and John Mood and works by London silversmiths such as a domed sterling silver trophy cup by William Fountain. The trophy cup was awarded to Revolutionary War General John McPherson after his horse “Roxana” won the Jockey Club Purse at the Washington Racecourse (now Hampton Park) in Charleston. Many of these objects were also exhibited at The Society of the Four Arts, Palm Beach, FL in an exhibition titled An Eye for Opulence: Charleston through the Lens of the Rivers Collection in 2015. This exhibition was a collaboration between the Society of the Four Arts, Gibbes Museum of Art, Historic Charleston Foundation and The Charleston Museum.

ENGAGING COMMUNITY Over the course of this reporting period, the Gibbes Education and Programs Department continued to experiment with bold, boundary-pushing educational programs and events designed to activate our outstanding exhibitions and engage all facets of our community.
REFRAME What is art? Where does it live? And who decides? On December 4, 2022 the Gibbes hosted an event called REFRAME at Oak Terrace Preserve Pavilion in North Charleston. This community event was generously sponsored by The Kennard Kennedy Fund, a charitable fund established by William E. Kennard and Gibbes Board Trustee Deborah Kennedy Kennard. This event aimed to take the visual arts outside of the Museum walls and encourage the community to find artistry within themselves. Free of charge, attendees could drop in and enjoy live music by Mike Brown, pick up a brush and create their masterpiece, or take inspiration from then Visiting Artist, Amiri Farris, as he live painted. REFRAME
will be an annual event taking the Gibbes into the community and advocating for inclusion.
ANIMAL ADVENTURES FAMILY DAY We believe art is a family affair, and on Saturday, February 25, 2023 the Gibbes was thrilled to host its first free Family Day since before major renovations began in 2014. Inspired by Un/Natural Selections and generously sponsored by Art Bridges, over 1,000 visitors flocked to the Museum. Special events included animal pose yoga, storytelling with the Charleston County Public Library, animal folk tales with Minerva King, and a film screening of FernGully: The Last Rainforest. In the afternoon, community partners including the South Carolina Aquarium, Charleston County Parks and Recreation, the Department of Natural Resources, Charleston Parks Conservancy, Grow with the Flow Homestead, and the Cape Romaine National Wildlife Center, gathered in the Lenhardt Garden to share local wildlife with guests.

ANTIGONE We know people engage in different ways, which is why we remain committed to interdisciplinary programming. Inspired by the exhibition Greek Geometric Art from the Sol Rabin Collection, on March 3, 2023, the Education and Programs Department along with a team of local performers offered a live production of the ancient Greek tragedy Antigone, theater-in-the-round-style, in the Lenhardt Garden. An all-female cast tied the plays timeless themes to contemporary concerns. One guest noted: “Not often do we get the opportunity to see Oedipus Cycle drama in Charleston. A true classic. Great tie in to Greek Geometric exhibit.” 42% of survey respondents said this was their first program at the Gibbes.
BIRD ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP WITH ISAIAH SCOTT Many artistic traditions, like the tradition of Wildlife art, can feel like the domain of older generations. Through innovative programming, we wanted to highlight young, dynamic, and emerging artists keeping these traditions alive and well through their practices and their creative approaches to social media. In April 2023, birder, artist, and Instagram influencer, Isaiah Scott, brought his talents to the Gibbes as a part of our Visiting Artist Limited series and led a sold-out bird illustration workshop. 57% of survey respondents reported that this was their first program at the Gibbes, a testament to the power of engaging new voices.
ARTISTIC VISIONARIES Art Charleston 2023 was all about pushing the boundaries and our corresponding educational programs did not disappoint. A crowd favorite was a panel of Artistic Visionaries where we brought together artists at the vanguard of digital art, NFTs, and AI, which included transmedia artist Carla Gannis, 1858 Prize Finalist Damian Stamer, and Charleston native, CONCEPT RXCH.
Black Girls in Art Spaces began as an Instagram community but now has chapters across the US. Their mission is “communal care through the arts for Black girls, women, and non-binary folks”. The Gibbes Museum hosted the launch of the Charleston Chapter by offering a private tour of the Beverly McIver: Full Circle Exhibition, followed by dinner and conversation. This experience was the first of many opportunities for fellowship with other Black women and non-binary folks engaged in the arts.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS Community and industry partners are integral to the work that we do at the Gibbes Museum of Art. Investment in the Gibbes allows us to offer pivotal exhibitions and programs in addition to enabling us to advance our DEAI initiatives to make the Museum more accessible. We are truly grateful to our myriad of businesses, foundations, and corporate entities for the support provided. Many are listed in the following pages of this report, and we truly thank everyone. We want to highlight a few major initiatives below that would not have taken place without the generous support of these partners.
ART BRIDGES Art Bridges Foundation, established by Alice Walton and located in Bentonville, Arkansas, works with museums of all sizes to create and support arts programs that educate, inspire, and deepen engagement with local audiences. The foundation provides financial and strategic support to get art out of storage and into communities. Art Bridges identifies community partners to assist with traveling exhibitions, collection loans, and collection sharing. They also support programming, audience engagement, and evaluation to increase community access to American art. Since 2019, the Gibbes has been a partner with Art Bridges Foundation. In the winter 2023, Art Bridges helped fund the exhibition and corresponding community outreach for Un/ Natural Selections: Wildlife in Contemporary Art.
BANK OF AMERICA For nearly 15 years, Bank of America has supported arts programming at the Gibbes. Since 2022, Bank of America has provided funding for transformative programming that embraces exhibitions on view while also reaching out to a more diverse audience. Whether it be the first-ever hip-hop performance in the Lenhardt Garden at the Gibbes, or more recently in March 2023, funding for the Gibbes’ original production of Antigone, inspired by the exhibition, From Chaos to Order: Greek Geometric Art from the Sol Rabin Collection. While the exhibition itself
demonstrated the artistic innovation of the period (corresponding to one of our four strategic pillars), we also saw an entry point for engaging with social justice issues (another pillar), sparking meaningful conversation around issues of equity, while drawing in a diverse audience. Additionally, Bank of America also provides support for Museums on Us at the Gibbes. Through this program, all BOA cardholders receive free general admission at the Gibbes during the first full weekend of every month.
SAMUEL FREEMAN CHARITABLE TRUST One of the major goals of the Gibbes 10-year Strategic Plan (2018–2028) is to raise a $10M endowment over ten years. The strategy is to establish both an acquisitions and operations endowment which would allow for long-term planning and definitive projects that support exhibition growth and corresponding educational programming. While the Gibbes has made great strides on this front, the pandemic period presented challenges. In the winter of 2023, we received a generous gift of $100,000 provided by the Samuel Freeman Charitable Trust. This funding has served as a match opportunity for special friends of the Gibbes and its board of directors.
SOUTH CAROLINA ARTS COMMISSION Each year the South Carolina Arts Commission supports the Gibbes through general operations and education support, including funding for our summer camps and scholarships for students who may not be able to attend due to cost. Over the years, we have been able to bring thousands of students to the Gibbes for field trips and tours because of SC Arts Commission support. Since the end of the pandemic, funding has also enabled our education team to create community art kits to provide to schools and community groups. In April 2023, the Gibbes was awarded a $50,000 Arts for All SC Grant (AFASC) to help identify and address accessibility barriers. This funding will allow the Gibbes to make meaningful changes within the organization to increase participation in the arts for patrons with disabilities.

EDUCATION The Education and Programs Department continued to fine-tune its approach to education initiatives, including taking a more targeted approach to education and outreach.
FREEDOM SCHOOLS M C G P H O TO G R A P H Y
Attending a series of neighborhood association meetings across North Charleston, the Education and Programs Department identified the Chicora Cherokee neighborhood as the site of a new pilot project that seeks to expand the Gibbes Museum’s summer camp offerings. While Chicora Cherokee is one of the most economically disadvantaged neighborhoods in Charleston, its strong infrastructure of existing service organizations presented an opportunity for the Gibbes to partner with the nonprofit Metanoia and introduce art modules to students attending their afterschool Freedom Schools program. Over the course of the summer we served 13 students who were given the option to explore everything from planning an art-related event to writing about art.
SUMMER CAMP AT THE GIBBES M C G P H O TO G R A P H Y

During the summer of 2023 we hosted 8 weeks of camp classes for ages 4–14. Themes included “Radical Rainforests” for ages 4–6, portraits inspired by Beverly McIver for ages 6–10, ice dying with previous Visiting Artist Daisy McClellan for ages 7–10, backstrap weaving with previous Visiting Artist Kristy Bishop for ages 11–14, texture and composition with Visiting Artist Robin Howard for ages 11–14, and plaster casting for ages 11–14. We continued our partnership with Kids on Point to offer a week-long camp session to rising 8th and 9th grade students from Title I schools across the area.
SCHOOL VISITS Over the 2022–2023 school year we welcomed over 1,700 students for in-person tours. Some of these tours included special activities, like the March 15th Angel Oak 3rd grade class visit generously funded by Arts, etc. Students not only received a tour of the Museum and special exhibition Un/Natural Selections, but they also enjoyed a preview performance of New Muse’s concert “Carnival of the Animals” which featured piano works for four hands inspired by animals. Many of these students had never been on a field trip before, and they were certainly impressed with their first visit.
AMIRI FARRIS AND STYLEZ Visiting Artist Amiri Farris is a collage maker and painter influenced by his Lowcountry roots. He has
a passion for creating art that tells the story of black history and Southern culture. Amiri was able to speak to and create artwork with the STYLEZ Mentor Group, from Charleston County School of the Arts. He spoke with them about creating art based on their life experiences. The kids were able to speak to a working, professional artist and gain knowledge on collage making and abstract painting.
RANSOME AND BURKE HIGH SCHOOL Visiting Artist, Ransome, shared information about his creative process with high schoolers at Burke High School. He spoke about being a professional artist and how to grow in their artistry. He provided an art demonstration and taught sketch techniques to senior art students.

Since 2021, the Gibbes has presented its weeklong, annual festival entitled, Art Charleston. With a 5-day focus on the visual arts through signature events, unique experiences, artist lectures, gallery walks, professional workshops, and exhibition tours led by experts, residents and visitors further supported the economy through hotel stays, visits to restaurants, and support of retail and galleries related to the arts. Art Charleston 2023 pushed the boundaries for all that is possible. We hosted Arthur Lewis as our Art of Design speaker, enjoyed a special musical performance by Ranky Tanky, partnered with BEEPLE for an unforgettable night in their newly opened space, and introduced the Artisan Fair where local artisans showcased their creative process and sold their works. Art Charleston has successfully raised over $800K over the last two years through its fundraisers in addition to another $200,000 generated through ticket sales for educational programming to support the Gibbes. In turn, the Gibbes has provided more than $500K in support of local businesses. Art Charleston enhances the cultural landscape through immersion in the visual arts and highlights the Gibbes as a place where strong and diverse human stories are told through the arts.

JAMES SHOOLBRED GIBBES PHILANTHROPY AWARD The James Shoolbred Gibbes Philanthropy Award honors its namesake for his generous donation of $100,000 made to the City of Charleston in 1885 for the purpose of creating an art museum. Gibbes was a great lover of art, and this philanthropy award recognizes individuals who embody these same principles. PICTURED ABOVE Katherine M. Huger (photo by MCG Photography)
Each year during the annual year-end Fellows celebration we recognize an individual, group, or business with this prestigious award for his/her outstanding leadership and support of the Gibbes. This year we were honored to bestow the James Shoolbred Gibbes Philanthropy Award posthumously to Katy Huger.
While Katy’s career was in the fields of economics and banking, she also dedicated her time and intellect to supporting the Curatorial Department at the Gibbes through her research and serving on the Collections & Exhibitions Committee for 35 years. She had a sincere and unwavering love for the Gibbes Japanese print collection which led to the first exhibition of the collection in 1982, and more recently to the current traveling exhibition and first major catalogue of the collection entitled Lasting Impressions: Japanese Prints from the Read-Simms Collection published in 2021 and dedicated to her. Through Katy’s estate planning, she bequeathed to the Gibbes 1.5 million dollars which has been designated by the board of directors to support acquisitions and exhibitions. This is the largest, single financial gift ever made to the Gibbes. In her honor, we have named the third-floor Collections Storage Suite after Katy Huger. We are profoundly grateful to Katy for her lifelong support and generosity to the Gibbes.

NEW YORK CITY EXCURSION | APRIL 12, 2024 We hope you will join us in NYC for a wonderful opportunity to visit The Metropolitan Museum of Art and see our Gibbes Museum of Art painting of Aaron Douglas by renowned artist Edwin Harleston. Denise Murrell, PhD and Merryl H. and James S. Tisch Curator at Large will treat our Fellows to a before-hours private museum tour of the groundbreaking exhibition, The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism. Through some 160 works of paintings, sculptures, photographs, film, and ephemera, it will explore the comprehensive and far-reaching ways in which Black artists portrayed everyday modern life in the new Black cities that took shape in the 1920s–40s in New York IMAGE: Portrait of Aaron Douglas, 1930, by Edwin Harleston (American, 1882–1931). Oil on canvas. City’s Harlem and nationwide in the early decades of the Great Migration when millions of African Americans began to move away from the segregated rural South. The first art museum survey of the subject in New York City since 1987, the exhibition will establish the Harlem Renaissance and its radically new development of the modern Black subject as central to the development of international modern art. Featured artists include Charles Alston, Aaron Douglas, Meta Warrick Fuller, William H. Johnson, Archibald Motley, Winold Reiss, Augusta Savage, James Van Der Zee, and Laura Wheeler Waring. These artists will be shown in direct juxtaposition with portrayals of international African diasporan subjects by European counterparts ranging from Henri Matisse, Edvard Munch, and Pablo Picasso to Germaine Casse, Jacob Epstein, and Ronald Moody. For more information, please contact Jennifer Ross, Chief Advancement Officer, at jross@gibbesmuseum.org
