One of the biggest accomplishments this past year was achieving museum reaccreditation from the American Alliance of Museums. This is the highest national recognition afforded institutions across the country. The Gibbes has been accredited since 1972, and Alliance Accreditation brings national recognition to the museum. All museums must undergo a reaccreditation review every 10 years to maintain accredited status. We are very proud of this accomplishment!
Building upon the success of our reaccreditation, we are proud of our dynamic and thoughtprovoking exhibitions that continue to engage repeat visitors. Our season began with The Bitter Years: Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans Photographs from the collection of Martin Z. Margulies, who served as our 2020 Gibbes Distinguished Lecture Series speaker. His magnificent collection, one of the top 25 in the world, was a huge success and underscores the continuing relationships we build each year with our speakers, much like renowned artist Fred Wilson, who was our DLS speaker in 2019, and from whom we now enjoy the outdoor sculpture dedicated in September 2023 entitled, Omniscience. Through a remarkable collaboration with blacksmiths at the American College of the Building Arts, this piece represents Wilson’s firstever venture in ironwork and the first work created specifically for a Southeastern museum.
While Gibbes’ exhibitions have made an impact in the world of American art, we are connected to each one through personal relationships made by curators, Board members, and community members. In Something Terrible May Happen: The Art of Aubrey Beardsley and Edward Ned I.R. Jennings, a significant collaboration with the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation and its Broadening Narratives funding initiative, we revisited the story of ‘Ned’ Jennings, an underrepresented artist in our permanent collection. Moving into the new year, we began with the phenomenal exhibition entitled, Rory McEwen: A New Perspective on Nature, organized by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and Oak Spring Garden Foundation. Through the generous support from Presenting Sponsors Cindy and Ben Lenhardt, this exhibition showcased the vibrant and varied career of renowned Scottish artist Rory McEwen (1932–1982) and his lasting impact on the botanical art world. We finished our exhibition season with the beautiful, dream-like, narrative works of Cuban-American artist Reynier Llanes in Passages
We continued to raise the bar with our 2023 Gibbes Distinguished Lecture Series speaker when we welcomed Dr. Sarah Elizabeth Lewis, the John L. Loeb Associate Professor of the Humanities and Associate Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. Our first art and cultural historian lecturer in the series, Dr. Lewis expanded on how historical and personal identities are shaped by image-based representation. Coinciding with the exhibition The Bitter Years: Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans Photography from the Martin Z. Margulies Collection, we were thrilled to be able to expand on the discourse around the power of photography and image-based representation with Dr. Lewis’s visit.
During our third annual Art Charleston festival, we continued to innovate, elevate, and cultivate Charleston’s thriving art culture through our signature events, unique experiences, artist lectures, panel discussions, gallery walks, professional workshops, and exhibition tours. We also honored longtime Gibbes Board members and local philanthropists Ms. Sally Smith and Mr. Roy Green at an intimate farm-to-table dinner. We are proud that Art Charleston continues to garner recognition as the significant visual arts festival in Charleston, while also supporting the local arts community.
Most importantly, we continued to further accessibility at the Gibbes. Through an anonymous donation of $100,000, we offered four free Saturdays, two community days, and an open house for Meeting Street schools. We also secured a three-year grant from Art Bridges Foundation, which allowed us to reinstitute our free-admission Wednesdays from 5–8 pm. We aim to engage all members of our community through these offerings, and we are truly grateful for our supporters who make this possible.
We also depend upon you, our amazing Gibbes members, who believe in the power of art. Thank you!

The Gibbes strives to present exhibitions and acquire works of art for its collection that touch Charleston while connecting the Gibbes to the wider world of artists and museums. Over the course of the year the Museum presented five special exhibitions, three of which were organized by the Gibbes curatorial team. The Gibbes also maintains a robust loan program and this past year the Gibbes loaned works to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, for the exhibition The Harlem Renaissance and Trans-Atlantic Modernism, to the Mint Museum of Art, Charlotte, for the traveling exhibition Southern/Modern, and to the Charleston Museum for the exhibition The Art of Abstraction: Modernism in Quilting. Additionally, the Gibbes maintains loans with the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the Office of the Mayor of Charleston, Charleston City Hall, Historic Charleston Foundation, City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department, Middleton Place Foundation, and the Old Exchange Building.
The Collections and Exhibitions department fielded over 150 requests for research, publication images, film images, and general artwork inquiries. Special projects launched in FY2023 continued, including the Centering Art | Voices initiative—a community engaged process to re-imagine the Gibbes Collection in preparation for a reinterpretation of the permanent galleries. Information collected from the community in four full day interpretive charettes will serve as a guide in the creation of new gallery interpretation signage, the launch of the new Bloomberg App gallery guides, and conversations between contemporary and historic artworks in the collection.
The Collections and Exhibitions department team includes Sara Arnold, director of curatorial affairs, Maggie Claytor associate registrar, David Petitpain head preparator, and Brenna Reilley, associate curator. Chase Quinn, co-director of education and programs, and curator of special projects also contributes to the curatorial department direction.
DEDICATED ON SEPTEMBER 29, 2023
Fred Wilson’s Omniscience is inspired by the story of Omar Ibn Said an Islamic scholar enslaved in the Carolinas from 1807 until his death in 1864. Said is believed to have written the only known Arabic-language autobiography penned by an enslaved African in the United States. This manuscript—now housed at the Library of Congress—documents
Said’s life in West Africa as an educated and devout Muslim, and his experiences of being captured at age thirty-seven by Christian enslavers who transported him across the Atlantic to the ports of Charleston where he was sold into slavery.
Renowned for work that challenges assumptions of history, culture, race and conventions of display, Wilson’s interdisciplinary practice reframes objects and cultural symbols to encourage viewers to reconsider traditional social and historical narratives. While centering Said’s written manuscript, Wilson collaborated with blacksmiths at the American College of the Building Arts to explore Said’s powerful story through a metalwork created in the tradition of the wrought ironwork common in Charleston’s historic built environment. The sculpture installed at the entrance to the Museum is the Wilson’s first-ever venture in ironwork.
Born in the Bronx, New York, Wilson earned his bachlors degree in fine arts at Purchase College, State University New York. He received a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation ‘Genious’ Award (1999) and the Larry Aldrich Foundation Award (2003). He represented the United States at the Cairo Bienniale (1992) and Venice Biennale (2003). His works are held in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Studio Museum Harlem, The Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Art, and Tate London. Omniscience is the first work Wilson has created specifically for a museum in the Southeast.
This outdoor sculpture installation is made possible by generous support provided by Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Jones of The Wayne and Carolyn Jones Charitable Foundation, Cathy and Buddy Jenrette, Middleton Outdoor Sculpture Fund, Ms. Kathryn P. Salmanowitz of The Harold Salmanowitz Charitable Lead Annuity Trust and The Kathryn P. Salmanowitz Donor Advised Fund, South Carolina Arts Commission, Bank of America, Lynch Cracraft Wealth Management of Raymond James, Ms. Elizabeth Saal of the Joseph J. Special thanks to the American College of the Building Arts, City of Charleston, Evans and Schmidt Architects, Pace Gallery and Spoleto Festival USA.
The Gibbes presented 5 special exhibitions in FY2024. The exhibitions were inspired by and connected to the Museum’s four content themes: Conservation and the Environment, Health and Wellness, Innovation, and Social Justice. Each of these themes was explored through the works on view and in dynamic programming that accompanied each exhibition.

I believe it is good at this time to be reminded of those ‘Bitter Years’ and to bring them into the consciousness of a new generation which has problems of its own, but is largely unaware of the endurance and fortitude that made the emergence from the Great Depression one of America’s victorious hours.
– EDWARD STEICHEN
SEPTEMBER 8, 2023 – JANUARY 14, 2024
Organized by the Martin Z. Margulies Collection
In September 2023, the exhibition The Bitter Years Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans Photographs from the Martin Z. Margulies Collection opened the season. These iconic photographs featured the work of photographers hired to capture the social landscape of the country while also highlighting the challenges facing Americans between 1935 and 1944. During the opening preview, special guests enjoyed a conversation with Katherine Hinds, chief curator, and Jeanie Ambrosio, associate curator of The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse.
In 2021, the Gibbes received a two-year grant from the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation as part of its new grant initiative, Broadening Narratives, to illuminate underrepresented stories. The Gibbes Museum of Art created an exhibition drawing parallels between noted Charleston Renaissance artist Ned Jennings and British Aesthete and artist Aubrey Beardsley, re-contextualizing the Renaissance by examining the historically taboo topic of LGBTQIA+ contributions to the art world, still largely untold in the South. In particular, the exhibit examined the role of queer artists in the Charleston arts community and the influence of queer aesthetics on the Charleston Renaissance via an exploration of Jennings’ works and life.
By considering the impact of the British Aestheticism movement of the late 19th century on one of Charleston’s most original artistic minds, Edward Ned I.R. Jennings, this exhibition allowed us to engage in a long overdue conversation about the LGBTQIA+ influences, histories, and kinship networks that existed between World Wars I and II when the visual arts flourished; a period that would become known as the Charleston Renaissance.
Thanks to the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation’s commitment to telling this story, we were able to reengage with the work of an artist whose life was tragically cut short and whose originality and impact for too long had been marginalized.
OCTOBER 20, 2023 – MARCH 10, 2024
Oscar Wilde once said, I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best. And this past year that’s what the Gibbes was intent on offering our community—the best exhibitions, the best programs, and the best museum experience for all of our visitors.
One of the highlights of a year showcasing all the best the Museum has to offer, included rediscovering one of the most original artistic voices to come out of the Charleston Renaissance, a period in the roaring 20s when Charleston’s art and culture scene was all the rage. At that time, a talented young man named Edward “Ned” Jennings emerged as Charleston’s own enfant terrible with his bold and unconventional illustrations and set, mask, and costume designs.
Previously, his work and his legacy had gone undersung, in part because of the brevity of his career and the tragic circumstances of his death—he took his own life at the age of 31—and in part because of intimations surrounding his sexuality. Scholars have surmised that the young artist, who was isolated in his own time not only by his macabre imagination but by a distinct speech impediment – was gay.
The Gibbes, with the steadfast support of the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation, determined to let his art speak, and to reconsider Jennings’ story in the context of the queer art traditions that preceded him and influenced a generation of emerging American artists into the early twentieth century.
Plans for the resulting exhibition Something Terrible May Happen: The Art of Aubrey Beardsley and Edward Ned I.R. Jennings began as early as 2021 when Gibbes staff curator Chase Quinn determined that elements of Jennings’ drawings and paintings were strikingly similar stylistically to those by famed British artist and illustrator Aubrey Beardsley. A close contemporary of Oscar Wilde, at the turn of the century in London, England, like Jennings, Beardsley died young but distinguished himself in his own
time as an important and original voice.
Both Wilde and Beardsley would come to represent an art movement called British Aestheticism (1860 –1900). This movement, in addition to celebrating art for its own sake, would, through Wilde’s flamboyant career and the scandal provoked by his same sex romantic affairs become identified with queer culture. Acknowledging this culture, defined by its resistance to heteronormativity and all things conventional, as a source of inspiration for many artists regardless of their sexual identity, the Gibbes sought to examine its influence on Jennings specifically, and the visual arts of the Charleston Renaissance for the very first time.
What resulted was a small but powerful exhibition that allowed the Museum to celebrate the legacy of a Charleston artist in our permanent collection, create an entry point for considering the influence of queer culture on the visual arts of Charleston, and put the visual art of our beautiful city in conversation with an international art movement, embodying our ethos as a Southern museum with a global perspective. This historic show included loans from Harvard Museums, Princeton Special Collections Library, the Matisse Foundation, and Washington College. In addition to a magical masquerade opening where guests joyously embraced the theme, cutting-edge programing attracted distinguished speakers, including curator of drawings at the Musee D’Orsay in Paris, France, Caroline Corbeau-Parsons, and opportunities to literally bring our permanent collection to life by staging a series of Tableau Vivants, a popular art form at the turn-ofcentury where performers and artists engage in a bit of stagecraft to create live recreations of paintings. Seventytwo percent of survey respondents who attended this sold out event reported that it made them think about art in a new way. Nearly 40% reported it was their first program at the Gibbes. This event was generously sponsored by Bank of America and Art Bridges.

In January 2024, the Gibbes hosted the inaugural United States opening of Rory McEwen: A New Perspective on Nature. This transformational exhibition was made possible through the generous support of Presenting Sponsors Cindy and Ben Lenhardt. A master gardener, Ben Lenhardt recognized the significance of Rory McEwen’s work to Charleston, a city with a long tradition of appreciation for botanical painters. The exhibition featured McEwen’s work alongside the works of master botanical artists from the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. McEwen’s mastery and precision in utilizing light and color to paint flowers and plants is exceptional and demonstrates why he is one of the standard-bearers of today’s renaissance in botanical painting.
The opening was accompanied by an exquisite dinner at the Charleston Library Society for exhibition dignitaries, donors, and special guests hosted by the Lenhardts, and a half-day symposium featuring distinguished speakers Sir Peter Crane, President of Oak Spring Garden Foundation, and Richard Deverell, Director of Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, as well as exhibition curator Ruth Stiff, and McEwen family members Flora McEwen and Christian McEwen.
The transformational exhibition Rory McEwen: A New Perspective on Nature was made possible through the generous support of Presenting Sponsors Cindy and Ben Lenhardt. Community philanthropists, the Lenhardts have given generously to the Gibbes Museum through the support and naming of the Gibbes Lenhardt Garden. Cindy has served on the Gibbes Advancement and Membership Committee and Ben currently serves on the Gibbes Board of Directors and the Building and Grounds Committee.
The exhibition was presented by the Gibbes in association with Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (London) and Oak Spring Garden Foundation (Virginia); and Tour Management by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA.
In the spring the Gibbes presented the vibrant narrative paintings of Reynier Llanes. Born and raised in Cuba, Llanes paints ethereal worlds. Drawing from his own memories and experiences as an artist and an immigrant as well as his interest in history, literature, science, and time, Llanes combines and contrasts scenes from nature and daily life with an imaginative and magical elegance. Now based in Miami, Llanes called Charleston home for six years and we were happy to welcome him back. During parts of May, June, and July Llanes could be found in studio at the Gibbes as part of our Visiting Artist Limited series sharing his unique coffee painting techniques with visitors and many Gibbes summer campers!
The exhibition was made possible with support provided by BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, Lynch Cracraft Wealth Management of Raymond James, the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation and the Jane Smith Turner Foundation.
We were thrilled to produce a catalogue commemorating the exhibition with support provided by Dr. Brenda Lauderback and Dr. Boyd Wright, Deborah Kennedy Kennard and William E. Kennard, Dr. Antonio Tillis, Wardell and Margie Morse, and Harmon-Meek Gallery.
REYNIER LLANES: PASSAGES CATALOGUE IS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT THE GIBBES MUSEUM STORE.
APRIL 6, 2024 – AUGUST 18, 2024
The Gibbes Museum of Art has again achieved accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, the highest national recognition afforded to the nation’s museums. Accreditation signifies excellence to the museum community, to governments, funders, outside agencies, and to the museum-going public. The Gibbes Museum of Art has been accredited since 1972. All museums must undergo a reaccreditation review at least every 10 years to maintain accredited status.
Alliance Accreditation brings national recognition to a museum for its commitment to excellence, accountability, high professional standards, and continued institutional improvement. Developed and sustained by museum professionals for over fifty years, the Alliance’s museum accreditation program is the field’s primary vehicle for quality assurance, self-regulation, and public accountability. It strengthens the museum profession by promoting practices that enable leaders to make informed decisions, allocate resources wisely, and remain financially and ethically accountable to provide the best possible service to the public.
Accreditation is a very rigorous but highly rewarding process that examines all aspects of a museum’s operations. To earn accreditation, a museum first must conduct a year of self-study, and then undergo a site visit by a team of peer reviewers. AAM’s Accreditation Commission, an independent and autonomous body of museum professionals, considers the self-study and visiting committee report to determine whether a museum should receive accreditation.
Site reviewers noted in summary: “The Gibbes is a wonderful museum that anchors its region in art history, hands-on art experiences, and arts education, and it brings creativity and self-expression to the communities it serves. The staff and board are impressive across all measures and there is capacity to fulfill responsibilities to public trust, collection stewardship, education programming, and service to an increasingly diverse public.” Of the nation’s estimated 33,000 museums, roughly 1,100 are currently accredited. The Gibbes Museum of Art is one of only 17 museums accredited in South Carolina.
2023 – JUNE 2024
THE GIBBES IS GRATEFUL TO THE NUMEROUS DONORS AND COLLECTORS WHO MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR THE MUSEUM TO ACQUIRE AND EXHIBIT THE HIGHEST QUALITY ART. DURING FY2024, THE GIBBES ADDED FIFTY-TWO NEW WORKS TO THE PERMANENT COLLECTION BY BOTH GIFT AND PURCHASE.

PICTURED: JOHN M. RIVERS PICTURED WITH A SECRETARY PRESS, CA. 1783–1790, ATTRIBUTED TO JACOB SASS, ONE OF FORTY-FOUR OBJECTS DONATED FROM THE RIVERS COLLECTION
In 2023, John M. Rivers generously donated forty-four objects from his distinguished Charleston collection to the Gibbes. The gift includes extraordinary examples of grand, eighteenth-century case furniture such as a secretary press attributed to cabinetmaker Jacob Sass. Sass operated one of the busiest and most successful cabinet shops in Charleston. Craftsmen working in shops like Sass’s included enslaved Africans and African Americans as well as immigrant European journeymen. The fine craftsmanship in major furniture pieces like the secretary press and the inlaid mahogany stage-top sideboard demonstrate the sophisticated artisan skills present in 18th and 19th century Charleston. These works are accompanied by examples of metalworks including silverworks by known Charleston silversmiths John Ewan and John Mood.
THE BATTERY, CHARLESTON, SC. , 1929, BY EDWARD HOPPER (AMERICAN, 1882–1967). WATERCOLOR, PENCIL AND CHALK ON PAPER, 13 ⅞ X 19 ⅞ INCHES.
Thanks to many generous supporters of the Museum, the Gibbes was able to purchase one of the extremely rare Charleston watercolors by renowned American realist Edward Hopper. In spring 1929, accompanied by his wife Josephine, Hopper traveled to Charleston. Arriving in their first automobile—a 1925 Dodge—the pair reportedly stayed in the city for three weeks. Hopper was no doubt familiar with Charleson’s landmark battery scene prior to his sojourn south, and his painting presents a vista of the iconic seawall and promenade at the southeast corner of White Point Gardens with a view of the harbor. This extremely important acquisition enables the Gibbes to demonstrate the widespread influence of the twentieth-century art revival known as the Charleston Renaissance.
We are especially thankful to Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Jones, The Wayne and Carolyn Jones Charitable Foundation who offered to match donations towards the painting purchase. Additional lead donor support is provided by Anonymous, D. Frank and Kristi Haygood, Katherine M. Huger Endowment, Kim and Jim Pallotta, The Samuel Freeman Charitable Trust, Ms. Kathryn P. Salmanowitz, The Harold Salmanowitz Charitable Lead Annuity Trust, and Mr. and Mrs. W.S. Smith.
Contributors include Ms. Miranda Brooks and Mr. Stephen Elliott Webb, Dr. and Mrs. Tim Cantopher, Dr. and Mrs. David J. Cohen, Ms. Mary Elson, Dr. Elizabeth Harden and Dr. Richard Hoefer, Mr. Jack Hoey, Jr., Mrs. Gayle Hong and Mr. Arthur Richardson, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy W. Hughes, Cathy and Buddy Jenrette, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Lenhardt, Mr. and Mrs. Spencer J. Lynch, Mr. Bernard F. Mack, Esq., Denise and Bernard Mansheim, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Maresca, Ms. Lorraine Perry, Dr. Jennifer Parker Porter and Mr. Stanley E. Porter, Mr. and Mrs. Karl Riner, Ms. Elizabeth Saal, Trustee, the Joseph J. Schott Foundation, Harriet Smartt, Chuck and Liz Sullivan, and Dr. and Mrs. Scott L. Woodfield.

This past year we were also able to bring the best to our community partners and emerging young artists of diverse backgrounds. In addition, we took measures to help diversify the museum field. Much of this work was only possible because of the Kennard Kennedy Fund, established in 2021, with a commitment to supporting efforts to increase art access and outreach efforts to all communities, and through funds allocated by the state of South Carolina to fund two initiatives: a series of lesson plans inspired by artists of color in our permanent collection meant to help broaden the horizons of South Carolina students, and a unique internship hosted by the Gibbes.
For the second year in a row, the Gibbes partnered with Metanoia, a nonprofit community development corporation committed to creating thriving North Charleston neighborhoods in partnership with the youth and families living there. Through their Freedom School Program which provides a literacy-focused summer camp, the Gibbes introduced an art module in 2023. In the summer of 2024, we expanded on this partnership whereby, in addition to sending teaching artists once
a week to Metanoia, we brought the same students to the Gibbes once a week. This summer, the program led and designed by Associate Curator of Contemporary Initiatives Jordan Brown, focused on storytelling through photography. They were visited by special guests like Cecil Williams, one of the few African American photographers to capture the Civil Rights Movement. Williams shared how photography, in addition to documenting personal histories, may be used as a tool for promoting social justice. The summer culminated with a special exhibition featuring the work the students produced over the course of the summer which opened at a gallery in North Charleston and then traveled to the Gibbes’ Art Sales Gallery.
In addition to providing our Visiting Artists the opportunity to sell their work, the Ruth and Bill Baker Art Sales Gallery has been a powerful site of community development. Besides the Metanoia Freedom School exhibition, the Gibbes mounted the second HBCU Showcase, now known as the Kennedy Kennard HBCU Showcase and also funded by The Kennard Kennedy Fund. The exhibition represented HBCU colleges and universities: Morehouse College, Claflin University, Howard University, Benedict College, Spelman College, North Carolina Central University, Norfolk State, and South Carolina State University.
Recognizing the disparity in representation of people of color on staff at museums across the country, the Gibbes Museum, beyond the gallery walls and the classroom, launched the Vibrant Leader Internship opportunity in the summer of 2024 to help reshape the professional field. Geared toward students of color enrolled in college, the Vibrant Leader Internship is designed to create pathways for individuals interested in learning more about careers in the arts to receive a 360-degree museum experience, mentorship, and leadership training. This program was generously funded by the state of South Carolina and designed in collaboration with AC Creative Collective. The Gibbes proudly graduated its first Vibrant Leader Intern, Danielle Drummond. Danielle’s experience culminated with a presentation in front of the Gibbes Board of Directors where she presented her findings after synthesizing two years’ worth of survey data the Museum had collected on the quality of its public programs, significantly helping the institution towards quantifying its impact with survey-backed data.
The Gibbes Museum of Art worked with TurnKey Education to conceptualize and develop a study guide focused on works in the permanent collection by artists of color. Made possible by generous funding from the state, this study guide offers original, assessable, STEAM-related classroom lesson plans and activities for elementary school, grades 3–5. It is designed to be flexible and used to best meet the needs and capabilities of any class. The study guide looks closely at the artwork of Edwin Harleston, Mary Jackson, Sam Doyle, Charles Williams, and Leo Twiggs and provides five different themed units. What is an American? asks students to consider Edwin Harleston’s life and the different experiences he had while living in Charleston versus studying in Chicago during the early 20th century. Who is your Family? explores Leo Twigg’s relationship to his great-grandmother, who he never met. Where is Charleston? considers the ecology of sweetgrass while examining four stunning examples of Mary Jackson’s baskets. When was that Made? considers Charles William’s work And Still I Love asks students to consider details of a contemporary work inspired by historical photographs. Finally, Why do We Work? dives into Sam Doyle’s career and how his work both served and elevated the St. Helena community.
This study guide is the first of three, with one for middle school grades expected to be completed by the end of fiscal year 2025 and one for high school grades by the end of fiscal year 2026.
Associate Curator of Contemporary Initiatives and Visiting Artists, Jordan Brown hosted an event for the group Black Girls in Art Spaces, where 50 women were invited to this fun and creative event. This was the first visit to the Gibbes for over half the group. Canvas and Cocktails provided live music and showcased several local artists and Black business owners. Participants created their own original artwork, enjoyed specialty beverages and fellowship with other women of color. We are grateful to the Kennard Kennedy Fund for support of this initiative.
Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Raheleh Filsoofi is an Iranian-born American artist whose work aims to interrupt cultural preconceptions and create dialogue around socio-political issues such as borders, immigration, and local community building. Filsoofi is the 2022 winner of the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art, awarded annually by the Gibbes.
While in studio at the Gibbes, Filsoofi launched the latest iteration of her ongoing global series Imagined Boundaries. Inspired by the miniature portrait collection at the Gibbes, Filsoofi proposed a new work for the Gibbes permanent collection entitled Imagined Boundaries: Through the Eyes of the Past and Present. The work is designed as a conversation between the historic miniature portraiture collection and Charlestonians today. Through an open call Filsoofi invited individuals with a connection to Charleston or those who consider it their home to visit her in studio and have their video portrait made. One hundred and seventy-eight individuals representing the diverse tapestry of the Charleston community participated in the project. The new multimedia installation now on view in gallery five was unveiled on October 11, 2024, as part of the exhibition Celebrating the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art.
After many years of watching kids have so much fun during summer camp making art and playing, the Education and Programs department decided that adults should have some fun, too! Made possible by the generous support of an anonymous donor and Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program, the Gibbes welcomed almost 300 adults to enjoy some crafts and inside fun on a sweltering summer evening. Seven community partners and artists provided activities from making elevated friendship bracelets with Beads & Brushstrokes, pouring custom wax candles with Island Candles, crafting custom buttons with the Charleston County Public Library, registering to vote with the League of Women Voters, and writing letters on an old-fashioned typewriter with The Paper Canopy. Past Visiting Artist Daisy McClellan had adults painting with coffee, inspired by the artwork by Reynier Llanes, and everyone kicked up their heels in the Campbell Rotunda to learn to Shag, the official dance of South Carolina. To wash it all down, Kall Me Tipsy mixed two specialty cocktails full of summer vibes featuring Volley Tequila Soda.
In June of 2024, the Gibbes launched its guide on Bloomberg Connects, the arts and culture app. Free of charge, the app connects the story of art in Charleston to global arts institutions, from the Tate across the pond to the International African American Museum down the street. Featuring deep dives into the permanent collection, exclusive audio content, and exhibition highlights, the Gibbes guide offers a new and accessible form of interpretation to its visitors. Since launching, the guide has had a total of over 700 users and has been translated into over eight different languages. Visitors who engage with the app are able to hear firsthand from artists and curators of works on view, cultivating a deeper understanding of the story that the Gibbes tells through art.
Art Bridges Foundation, established by Alice Walton and located in Bentonville, Arkansas, works with museums of all sizes to create and support arts programs that educate, inspire, and deepen engagement with local audiences. The foundation provides financial and strategic support to get art out of storage and into communities. Art Bridges also supports programming, audience engagement, and evaluation to increase community access to American art. Since 2019, the Gibbes has been a partner with Art Bridges Foundation.
In 2023, we were selected to be a museum partner of the Art Bridges Access for All pilot program! One of only 64 museums across the country to receive the award for this 3-year program, these funds have allowed us to open our doors to more people across the Lowcountry. Starting in January 2024, we began offering Wednesday evening hours. What’s more, admission from 5–8 pm on Wednesdays is currently free for everyone. We are also offering more free programs! Thank you to the Art Bridges Foundation.
In November 2023, several Gibbes staff attended the workshop Introduction to Antiracism. This was a training provided by a group called Crossroads. The purpose of the workshop was for participants to better understand the work required by themselves and institutions for being effective catalysts for race equity and understanding how systemic racism operates structurally.
Director of Education and Programs, Becca Hiester, attended the LEAD (Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability) Conference on August 27–31, 2023 in Boston, MA. This conference provided by the Kennedy Center advances the full inclusion of people with disabilities of arts and culture. With a focus on expanding the breadth and scope of accessible programming, LEAD provides an opportunity for professionals in the field to develop best
practices and resources; engage in conversations with colleagues and experts from around the world; and learn practical methods for designing inclusive arts experiences and environments.
Co-Director of Education and Programs and Curator of Special Projects, Chase Quinn joined SCAD Museum’s deFINEART festivities speaking on a panel to SCAD students about careers in art and culture journalism in February 2024 and also served as a museum panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts Grants for Arts Projects funding program held in December 2023. Chase was also named by Garden and Gun as one of the South’s Rising Vanguard in the art world: https://gardenandgun. com/articles/the-maverick-chase-quinn/

On November 1, 2023, the Gibbes Museum welcomed its 12th Distinguished Lecture Series speaker, Dr. Sarah Elizabeth Lewis. Dr. Lewis spoke passionately about the indispensable role of the arts in a representational democracy. Referencing figures like Frederick Douglass, who understood early on the importance of the image to engendering justice—as well as artists like Carrie Mae Weems, and even President John F. Kennedy—the sweep of Dr. Lewis’s lecture was truly inspiring. Dr. Lewis represents the series’ first art history lecturer. In addition, the Gibbes is proud to have welcomed over 60 students from the College of Charleston’s 1967 Affinity Group, the College of Charleston’s Honor’s College, and a cohort from Clemson University, all for free thanks to our education sponsors.
The 2023 winner of the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art was Sherrill Roland. Characterizing his artistic concerns, Roland’s 2022 public art installation Due Innocence, patterned after a vintage optical exam, asks the question what does your innocence look like to a local judge? After spending ten months in prison for a crime for which he was later exonerated, Roland returned to his artistic practice using only materials he had access to, or saw, while incarcerated. Born in 1984 in Asheville, North Carolina, Roland studied at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2018) and earned his MFA and BFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (2017 and 2009). Roland is the recipient of the Creative Capital Award (2021); South Arts Southern Grand Prize & State Fellowship (2020); and was an Art for Justice Grantee (2020) in addition to many other awards and recognitions. He lives and works in Durham, NC.
A group of dynamic young collectors who support the Gibbes Museum of Art with social and educational programs tailored for up-and-coming art patrons, dedicated to ensuring the Museum is a reflection of our contemporary cultural landscape, Society 1858 takes its name from the year that the Carolina Art Association was established. Although the Gibbes Museum of Art opened its doors in 1905, the Museum’s art collection began in 1858. Members gather several times a year to explore exclusive private art collections, experience new local exhibitions, host the annual Society 1858 Winter Party and Amy P. Coy Forum and award an artist the 1858 Prize for Contemporary Southern Art.
Founded in March 1950, the Women’s Council serves as a vital support system of the Gibbes Museum. The auxiliary group has over 200 dedicated members who volunteer their time, talent, and financial support to the Museum. Each member serves as liaisons between the Gibbes Museum, and both residents of and visitors to the Charleston community. The annual Art of Design Luncheon and Lecture that takes place during Art Charleston is one of the Gibbes Museum’s major fundraising events. This event features internationally renowned experts in the world of art and design and has raised over a million dollars for the Museum since its inception over a decade ago. Funding directly supports educational programming and transformative museum exhibitions.
For the past three years, the Gibbes Museum of Art has presented its annual visual arts festival, Art Charleston. This weeklong festival continues to innovate, elevate, and cultivate Charleston’s thriving arts culture. Art Charleston enhances the cultural tourism economy through a 5-day focus on the visual arts with signature events, unique experiences, artist lectures, panel discussions, gallery walks, professional workshops, and exhibition tours led by experts. Art Charleston supports cultural tourism and has invested more than $500,000 in support of local vendors and businesses. Proceeds continue to benefit educational programming at the Gibbes Museum of Art.

PRESENTING HANNAH CECIL GURNEY, DIRECTOR OF DE GOURNAY
One of Charleston’s most iconic events of the year, Art of Design is a beautifully styled, seated luncheon featuring multiple courses prepared by Salthouse Catering, wine pairings, lively conversation, and Instagram-worthy décor set against the backdrop of the Gibbes’ classical European-style garden. The 2024 featured speaker, Hannah Cecil Gurney, Director of de Gournay, took us behind the scenes of de Gournay’s dreamy interior designs of custom hand-painted wallpapers, fabrics, and porcelains. Carrying the legacy of the business founded by her father, Claud Gurney, Ms. Gurney brought us on her journey to transform de Gournay from cult niche to industry leader.
Gibbes on the Street offered an opportunity to experience Charleston’s world-renowned culinary scene under the stars. This one-of-a-kind evening transformed Meeting Street into a foodie’s delight. Featuring top chefs, an open bar, DJ, and surprise entertainment, guests experienced one of the city’s busiest streets magically cast as an enviable dining and entertaining hotspot.
Freshly Foraged offered an intimate farm-to-table al fresco dinner in our Lenhardt Garden and featured the culinary masterpieces of one of Charleston’s most recognizable and accomplished chefs, Kevin Mitchell. An instructor, historian, author, and scholar of historical foodways of the American South, Chef Mitchell welcomed guests with hors d’oeuvres and an open bar before gathering for a four-course dinner served alongside lively, interactive conversation around the significance of the ingredients, the farm-to-table movement, sustainability and its importance in our culture, and the pure joy and sense of community we feel when we come together to share a meal. This event also celebrated Art Charleston Honorary Co-chairs, Sally Smith and Roy Green.
Art Charleston 2024 recognized Honorary Co-Chairs Sally Smith and Roy Green for their extraordinary contributions to the Gibbes throughout the years. Both have been founders, supporters, and devotees of Art Charleston’s signature events.

The Artisan Fair, a community market at the Gibbes, celebrated local creatives of all disciplines. Free and open to the public, visitors came and shopped from our curated selection of artistvendors. With up to forty skilled makers, there was nothing short of unique finds.
During Art Charleston 2024, and in collaboration with the Charleston Parks Conservancy, the Gibbes presented a community art project, A Tree of Every Color, conceptualized and designed by artist Tuxedo Kat. The sculpture premiered at the Gibbes during Art Charleston before it moved to the West Ashley Greenway. A Tree of Every Color featured over 200 three-dimensional hanging flowers and leaves designed by local children and their families.
The Gibbes Museum Fellows membership program brings together individuals and local businesses who share an appreciation for the arts and a personal commitment to enhancing Charleston’s premier art museum. These art enthusiasts experience museum patronage, exclusive special events, Fellows-only travel, and an annual year-end celebration. Our Fellows in turn help us to provide transformational exhibitions and programs.
John M. Rivers Jr., whose family has been in Charleston continuously since 1670, began forming the Rivers Collection of decorative arts in 1988. Recognizing that significant examples of Charleston furniture and silver were dispersing outside the Charleston area, Mr. Rivers made it a personal mission to preserve these exquisite works for display in his home city. Over the last thirty years, the Rivers Collection has grown steadily in breadth and depth and today boasts over 250 objects ranging in date between 1740 and 1865.
John Rivers has generously loaned objects from his prestigious collection to the Gibbes since 2006 and significant works have been prominently presented in the Kim and Jim Pallotta Gallery since the Gibbes major building renovation in 2016. In 2023 Mr. Rivers determined the Gibbes was an appropriate home for his collection and generously donated forty-four objects to the Museum.
Through their foundation, Wayne and Carolyn Jones aim to enrich our local community by supporting museum exhibitions, acquisitions, and projects that enhance lives and expand minds. Through the years, they have fostered relationships with local museum curators and leaders to determine what types of art would be most beneficial and important to a community. Strengthening, encouraging, and enabling southern art and artists has always been their primary goal.
For over ten years, the Wayne and Carolyn Jones Foundation has supported the Gibbes wholeheartedly.
First as lead donors of the Campaign for Excellence in 2013, the foundation aided in the Gibbes $17M renovation. By naming a gallery for scholar and curator Martha Severens, formerly of both the Gibbes and the Greenville County Museum of Art, the Jones married their love of the upstate with their love of the Lowcountry. Since then, their steadfast support of the Gibbes has been demonstrated through lead sponsorship of the 2022 exhibition entitled Fighters for Freedom: William H. Johnson Picturing Justice, lead sponsorship of Omniscience: A Sculpture by Fred Wilson, which included both the commissioned work and the outdoor installation (2022–2023) and most recently, the tremendous gift of a matching opportunity for the landmark acquisition of Edward Hopper’s The Battery, Charleston, SC, dated 1929.
In April 2024, a group of our Fellows members from the Gibbes Museum of Art traveled to New York City to visit the Metropolitan of Art to see our very own Gibbes’ painting of Aaron Douglas by renowned artist Edwin Harleston. Guests were treated to a pre-opening tour led by Denise Murrell, PhD, the Meryl H. and James S. Tisch Curator at Large, and curator of the groundbreaking exhibition, The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism. Following that tour, Met exhibition designer, Dan Kershaw, provided a tour of Look Again: European Paintings 1300–1800. These galleries reopened in January 2024 with fresh narratives and dialogues showcasing the interconnectedness of cultures and materials.
Following these wonderful tours and lunch at The Met executive dining room, a group headed over to the Brooklyn Museum to tour the acclaimed exhibition entitled Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys. Giants has received rave reviews since it opened, and through Society 1858 Board member Shane Hall with The Fine Arts Group, attendees were treated to a special tour with Associate Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art Indira Abiskaroon.
Gibbes Fellows and Museum Staff participated in a wonderful, art-filled trip to Venice, Italy June 2–8, 2024. Through the help of Benefactor Travel, guests were treated to private tours of art exhibitions within schools, libraries, and churches. A few highlights included a private after-hours’ visit of the permanent collection at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection with Director of the Guggenheim Collection, Karole Vail; participation in the 60th International Art Exhibition Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere Venice Biennale at the Giardini and the Arsenale. Additional private tours included the Willem de Kooning exhibition, Chiesa di San Sebastiano with Melissa Conn, Director of Save Venice, a private after-hours visit to the Basilica of San Marco, private home and studio tour of renowned glass artist Livio Seguso, to name a few.
Participants’ heads were filled with beauty and creativity from all of the art shown in this magical city. In addition, the food and drink at the many lunch and restaurant locations added to the overall joy.

JULY 2023 – JUNE 2024
This year the Gibbes Museum Store introduced several fabulous new collections and a variety of exclusive projects with local artists. Local fashion designer Shaneiqua Washington, who leads the creative force of Zuriel Kingdom Collections, brought to us her African Print Kimonos in both vivid and serene designs. We introduced a nationally known library designer, Juniper Books’ custom book sets. Local artist and product designer, Alicia Colella, worked with us on a pen and ink rendering of the Gibbes Rotunda, featured below.
Arun Drummond, a Charleston artist, created a new original art series for the Museum Store entitled Stripes, An Exploration of Lines, Lineage & Legacy.
Stripes represent the strong family lines and lineage of the Gullah Culture which emerged from its west African Roots… The sharp change in color defines division while the repeating pattern evokes unity. — Arun Drummond
