AN OCTOBER AFTERNOON, USED WITH PERMISSION
A LETTER FROM OUR OWNERS Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year in New England. It is also a time when we are reminded of that for which we are grateful. We would like to take a moment to do just that. We have grown this company from three offices and 45 agents to eight offices and over 200 agents. That growth is powered by a combination of our worldwide reach and unique company culture. Our reach extends around the globe, bolstered by our relationship with the Sotheby’s International Realty network of 20,000 agents and our dynamic marketing partnerships with key international media outlets. This helps to bring an entire world of buyers to our local properties.
all monumentally inspired at September’s Global Networking Event. Having set a goal of building 100 homes, the result was nearly $1 million raised and 150 homes pledged. We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve our agents, our clients, and our communities. We hope to be able to serve you and your loved ones in the months and years ahead.
Sincerely,
Our company culture is that of a large family. We collaborate with one another on the care of our clients in Massachusetts, and in service of our communities. As the Sotheby’s International Realty network strengthens through personal relationships, so does our ability to collaborate on client care with our colleagues from Boston to Beijing. More recently, we joined together to help struggling communities. New Story is an organization which builds homes in severely disadvantaged communities. Since the Sotheby’s International Realty partnership with New Story was announced in the spring, agents and companies within the network began donating funds to build homes. We were

STUDIED GRAPHIC DESIGN AND ILLUSTRATION AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AT DARTMOUTH I was so fortunate to study with some brilliant minds, like Dietmar Winkler, who designed the Kendall MIT subway station, and Robert Barry, author of Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree.
WORKED AS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER AT AN INDEPENDENT PRINTING COMPANY I really worked on my ability to hustle and looked for innovative ways to market our services.
WORKED AS A RESEARCHER AND COMMUNITY EVENTS ORGANIZER FOR A DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKER I met a lot of people who were making a huge difference in the world, including Grameen Bank founder and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
STARTED WORKING AT GIBSON DOMAIN|DOMAIN AS A RECEPTIONIST AND FREELANCE GRAPHIC DESIGNER After the dot-com-bust, jobs were scarce. One of our agents passed along my resume to the HR person at Gibson. I was hired as a receptionist and freelance graphic designer (two of the three jobs I held at the time). I loved working with the agents and their clients. We managed to get an espresso machine for the office, so I made espresso drinks for clients when they arrived. The idea that I could provide a little care and joy for them really made my workday thoroughly enjoyable.

HIRED TO WORK FULLTIME IN THE MARKETING DEPARTMENT OF GIBSON DOMAIN|DOMAIN, EVENTUALLY PROMOTED TO DIRECTOR OF THE DEPARTMENT This was an exciting moment for me. Those were much simpler times; a brochure contained one photo and one paragraph of text. MLS wasn’t sharing data with third parties. Now that seems like the dark ages!
HELPED TRANSITION GIBSON DOMAIN|DOMAIN INTO A SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY FRANCHISE When Larry and Paul bought the company, we decided to make a splash. We wanted to change all of our listing signs overnight so that we were truly a new company when the sun rose. Our department called in every favor we had available; even my father was changing signs!
BEGAN WORK AS A SALES COACH FOR GIBSON SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY, EVENTUALLY NAMED AS THE DIRECTOR OF PRODUCTIVITY This was a major turning point in my life. I felt tremendous inspiration and responsibility for helping agents get to their goals. So, I read every book I could get my hands on to learn about successful business models, motivation, goalsetting, neuroscience, and other relevant topics. I called it my “Library Card MBA.” We created several strategies to improve our agents’ enjoyment of their work. We have the highest per agent productivity out of the top ten firms in the state of Massachusetts.
NAMED CEO OF GIBSON SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY I feel so grateful every day that I get to contribute to our efforts and to participate in such a special workplace. The familylike culture of our company is truly unique, and our growth trajectory is unparalleled.
library card mba During the process of reading all of those fabulous books, one of them really resonated with me. It was “Lead with Luv,” written by Ken Blanchard and Colleen Barrett. Barrett is the President Emeritus of Southwest Airlines. I was so moved by her caring approach to leadership that I wrote a note thanking her for generously sharing her experience. One of the nice folks who answered the phone at Southwest promised they would get my note to her. Barrett wrote back and included a copy of a different book. Since then, we have communicated back and forth.

THREE HOMES IN AUTUMN Written by Cindy Bailen
Fall never fails in New England. We embrace the chance to put away our summer clothes and break out our wool sweaters. The temperatures are crisp, and so are the apples. Leaves turn red, orange, and yellow, and people from all over the world come here to enjoy them. Those of us who live here begin nesting, getting comfortable at home. Whether we live in the city or the suburbs, our houses take on the feeling of fall. Three Boston-area homes look especially appealing at this time of year, and all three are ready for new owners.

At the Joseph Thorp House, the Arthur Littledesigned architecture encompasses the best of Colonial revival, neo-classical, a dash of Queen Anne, and some additional influences. Its arches and balustrades look positively whimsical. There is nothing cookie-cutter about this place.
design with a traditional peasant hearth. Original homeowner, Sara Chapman Thorp Bull, had a Norwegian husband, who probably loved this room best.
From the first glance at the facade of the historic home, the autumn gold exterior color warms and invites. Carvings on the corbels are reminiscent of branches, and they echo the wisteria vines that hug the home and the plantings in raised beds.
Not all of the rooms are deeply colored. The neoClassical dining room has plenty of white-painted woodwork, with intricate bas-relief on the mantel. Its leaded glass Palladian bay window allows a flood of sunshine to enter. Walls and the tiles on the fireplace are the exact color of the autumn sky when it threatens to storm.
The solidity of the home draws us in to escape a brisk autumn afternoon. Deep, natural wood in the entry is complemented by the autumnal browns of the oriental runner on the stairs. Carved teak in the salon, recalling the American Aesthetic Movement, looks especially cozy. The library offers 19th century Norwegian
French country in design and the light brown color of fallen leaves, the home’s kitchen is a balance of contemporary and vintage elements. The stone on the generous prep-island works nicely with mahogany cabinetry. The original Walker & Pratt cast-iron stove stands nearby, reminding us of warm meals laced with autumn spices.

68 COMMONWEALTH AVENUE, BACK BAY Small, brilliant highlights of fall color enhance the stunning interior of a Back Bay condo facing the seasonal views of the iconic Commonwealth Avenue mall. Golden silk draperies in the front bay frame the scene, and two red chairs by the windows provide a place to relax and enjoy the fall. Look up! Even the period moldings around the 12-foot ceilings are traced with gold leaf. The interiors of the formal dining room’s arched custom built-ins are painted in a vibrant coral red, the quintessential hue of an autumn maple leaf. The warm color palette extends to the room’s chinoiserie-patterned wallpaper, and it pops against a white background.
Terra cotta tile in an autumn russet shade gives the family room the feeling of fall and it coordinates well with built in wood cabinetry. A bedroom, currently used as a den, has a majestic red chair beside a pair of built-in bookcases, just the place to catch up on reading during long fall evenings. Outdoors, the private patio is enclosed by a red brick wall, making it a charming spot to enjoy a warming beverage and friendly conversation.
In the generous master bedroom, the current homeowner’s red bedspread and oriental carpet provide autumnal coziness, as does the marble fireplace opposite the bed. The rosy color is repeated in two upholstered love seats that enhance the comfort of the space. A stunning en-suite marble bath revels in soft autumn beige on the floor and soaking tub surround. Golden brass hardware augments the dual sinks and cabinet doors.

468 HIGHLAND STREET, HAMILTON With a long equestrian tradition, Hamilton is a wonderful place to enjoy autumn days, and this 31.7 acre estate on Highland Street is an ideal location for horse lovers. It sits close to a network of riding trails at Bradley Palmer State Park, and the property includes a stable with five stalls and a tack room. The land undulates gently here, and the surrounding trees are already mellowing into shades of fall. A pond on the property reflects their colors. A red Japanese maple tree stands beside the organically-shaped swimming pool, adding a bit of color, and there is a large pool house right past it. Swimming is probably a rarity in the fall, but panoramic views flow inside, through the ample windows of the exquisitely updated 18th century house. In the home’s entryway, hand-painted murals tell the story of a previous era, with sailing ships and
a white house that appears to be this one. The home’s softly carpeted staircase rises straight ahead, with a golden oak bannister for support. The big living room invites family members to get comfy on the couch and enjoy the views. But it’s the glowing red dining room that evokes fall most of all. Thanksgiving dinners held at the long table in front of the fireplace could only be delicious. The views through the room’s French doors look lovely in any season. An appealing cherry kitchen is the heart of this home. Wood beams give it a rustic look, and one wall holds a big fireplace. But the shining island and long countertop tell you that this is a modern kitchen. The room’s best feature: a rounded wall with six windows to let in autumn light and vistas. A wood-paneled office sports red draperies, patterned with autumn leaf silhouettes, and it looks like a great place to get work done.
However, a colorful life in this rural suburban town does not preclude working at a job in Boston, because the Hamilton-Wenham commuter rail stop is not too far away. When an exuberant autumn comes to New England, we’re wise to let it into our homes with joy. We know the long winter is ahead, but if we’re lucky, we’ll have abundant fall color to sustain us throughout the year.

THE ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM’S ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM PROVIDES "THE GIFT OF TIME." 18 The Collection Fall 2017
BROOKLYN JUMBIES AT NEIGHBORHOOD NIGHTS: BLOCK PARTY, ISABELLA STEWART GARDNER MUSEUM, BOSTON
Written by Colleen Barry, CEO of Gibson Sotheby’s International Realty

t is morning, and her eyes open to see the sun warming the tapestries hung in her room. She doesn’t rise from her bed but rather watches the light slowly illuminate each one of the treasures she has amassed — paintings, sculptures, altar pieces, and furniture. One by one, each illuminated piece recalls a story of its past; some were bestowed as gifts to far away dignitaries, and some were commissioned for churches or castles. And, yet, some of the paintings are new; commissioned by her and created by the illuminating lights of her generation: artists. One of whom, John Singer Sargent, is surely still sleeping in the apartment downstairs. She has invited him to spend time within the walls of this new building; a building built at her behest; a building inspired by the Palazzo Barbaro in Venice. As she rises, she remembers the sun illuminating the Italianate architecture in a creeping blush of morning light. Isabella Stewart Gardner likely didn’t know it, but she had begun a program that would inspire generations of artists for decades after her death. Sargent would be the first artist in residence, decades before the program was formalized. Gardner gave visual artists, writers and dancers “the gift of time,” as one keeper of her mission would say.
THE HISTORY The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s Artist in Residence program was, in a way, born out of tragedy. During one night in 1990, 13 of the Museum’s most treasured works were stolen in what has become the world’s most infamous art heist. In the aftermath, a French conceptual artist by the name of Sophie Calle felt the need to create a visual remembrance of what was lost. Calle was granted intimate access to the museum where she took photographs and interviewed curators, conservators, guards, and visitors. One of the more compelling images she created, “Last Seen”, captures a visitor gazing upon the empty frame that once contained a Rembrandt. This series would eventually be exhibited in museums and galleries around the world and inspired the Museum’s director to ignite a movement. The Museum’s collection is fixed, as was stipulated in Gardner’s will: nothing is to be removed from or added to it. This presents its own challenge: how do you keep a fixed collection fresh and relevant? In 1992, the Museum’s director, Anne Hawley, created the Artist in Residence program as a call to artists to help reinvigorate the

the flowers and trees that I have loved. The flowers listed there are fragile and simple. Humanity has seen in them the illustrations of popular stories; they are our primary images.” In 2012, Othoniel was invited by Cavalchini to explore the garden and collection at the Museum. “The garden and flowers are recurrent motifs in the Museum’s collections: tapestries, ironware, laces, architectural elements, furniture, paintings — almost everything contains references to plants,” he said. He stayed in one of the two apartments built on the museum’s premises in 2012. He traced flowers in the collection. In addition to his book, Othoniel created a sculpture of a peony called “Knot of Shame”, which hung in one of the Museum’s lower galleries. Coincidentally, the galleries are the rooms where Sargent and others once slept. The meaning of peonies has changed over time, though the flower itself has remained the same. “During the Middle Ages, it was attributed with healing virtues that were particularly powerful, notably to treat mental sickness and to counter misfortune cast by magic. Since the 19th century, it has also been a symbol of shame,” wrote Othoniel in his book. Printed next to the entry is a detail from “The Virgin and Child in a Rose Arbor” by Martin Schongauer. That painting hangs in the Museum’s Dutch Room. collaboration between the artist and the Gardner Museum.

Museum. Since its inception, three directors have shepherded the program and 94 artists have participated. I spoke to Pieranna Cavalchini, who has run the program since 2001. “The program is custom-made and it’s never a one-shot deal. Artists come back again and again,” said Cavalchini. “Each artist enters this labyrinth and finds his or her own thread within it. Some works happen immediately and some take time.” The program also provides artists with access to other great minds of Greater Boston. Some have asked to be introduced to scientists studying at MIT. What Cavalchini

described sounds like a brilliant collaboration between the artist and the Gardner Museum.
PEONIES One example is Jean-Michel Othoniel. He described his lifelong journaling about flowers, their histories and meanings, in his 2015 book, “The Secret Language of Flowers: Notes on the hidden meanings of flowers in art,” published by the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum: “Since my adolescence, I have amassed a stock of notes on the history of plants and photographed
In 2012, the Museum christened a new wing. In perfect contrast with the original Italianate design, Renzo Piano’s addition was made of steel and glass. This inspired Artist Luisa Lambri to explore the letters between Gardner and her architect, Willard T. Sears, and then photograph the spaces within the Museum. “Lambri, herself, is a minimalist,” noted Cavalchini. “The Museum’s adornment took her out of her element.” Lambri published a book of the photographs in conjunction with the opening of the new wing. In it she published extended excerpts of the letters between Gardner and the architect. There is something exciting about a minimalist interpreting an Italianate building. It was clearly a modern take on a historic structure.

art. That small shift in my perception changed my view of Mrs. Gardner from benefactor to creator. In my mind, her Museum became a dream realized.
MAINTAINING A DREAM The photos are playful, graphic explorations of ornate surfaces. She interprets them as light and shadow; flat and curved shapes. It makes one think that both Gardner and Sears would approve. In many ways, the building itself is a work of art — yet, another commissioned by Gardner. She worked closely with Sears in 1899 to create an inside-out version of the Palazzo Barbaro in Venice, where she had stayed. The facade that faces the canal in Venice is replicated as the interior facade of the Gardner, surrounding the courtyard. As I spoke with Cavalchini, I asked a terribly naive question: What drew Mrs. Gardner to the arts? Why spend so much time, money and effort in support of artists? I mean, as far as I can see, she wasn’t an artist in her own right. “Oh, I disagree!” she said. “Look at the collection, the building, the works she commissioned; I think of her as a film director.” And, with that simple statement, I imagined the movement of the light, and the cinematic elements of the building. I imagined the works curated by Gardner and the works she commissioned. Her life’s work was
As one might expect, the collection is in a perpetual state of conservation. Many of the items within it are centuries old. Cavalchini remarked that the conservators are “maintaining a dream.” In at least one case, it was the conservation that sparked the inspiration of an artist. Mexican-born Laura Anderson Barbata was the Artist in Residence as the conservators were rebuilding 300-year old textiles for the walls of the Rafael Room. After researching the conservators’ processes and delving into the damask patterns, she created a piece called “Intervention Rafael Red.” Her costumes were a blend of the centuries-old design at the Gardner and elements of Mexican patterns. They were worn by stilt-walkers for an outdoor festival hosted by the Gardner in August.
Museum through the new work. Like the stilts, these artists take big leaps from Gardner’s original collection — but not beyond her dream. I believe this was very much part of it. The Artist in Residence program allows the interpretation of the collection to change over time, while the collection remains untouched. Like Othoniel’s peonies, the meaning changes while the flower remains the same. And both are blooming beautifully.
Visit the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum’s website to learn more at www.gardnermuseum.org
It is wonderful to see the Museum’s program stretching beyond the confines of its walls. By bringing stilt-walkers into the streets, they are inviting visitors to come inside. In a way, Anderson Barbata’s piece is an analogy for the Artist in Residence program: it gives the Museum legs. Artists are invited to create a new interpretation of the fixed collection. That interpretation travels the world, as does the artist. And new visitors discover the Gardner

story of creation sits on a quiet, leafy, serene setting, grandly speaking to philosophy, and design for its beholder. Its contents take us across the globe, to a Scandinavian practice. It’s mailbox reads “47,” seen along Raymond Street.
Here, within the highly desirable neighborhood of Avon Hill in Cambridge, internationally noted Icelandic architect, Bjorn Skaptason, has innovatively re-imagined this 19th-century classic as a work of art—a haven for modern living. Although it’s walls were built upon one of the most historic and iconic towns in New England, surrounding them is shrubbery to preserve a different type of prestige than the coveted Harvardaged colonials. Within them, a feeling of transport evokes. A staple of a culture sinks in. Featured in many design publications, reflecting values of naturalism, simplicity and creativity placed on daily life in Icelandic culture, the home creates a contemporary oasis with an interplay of space and light, emphasizing clean lines and monochromatic tones grounded by walnut and granite floors. It is believed by those on the distant green island that through this structural concept, the natural outside world can seep through, become absorbed and provoke, seamlessly. This autumn, the masterpiece sprouted a new stem in it’s landscape, and it’s name is Chive. Become inspired by the ways that this architectural feat continues to strike awe and delight, by following the journey taken within it by Jennifer Freedson, co-owner and contributing chef of Chive Catering-a local business driven to curate memorable events rooted from culinary intent.

In a space where minimal distraction meets bolded details, the home appears in blacks and whites, specks of art, dark woods and bright lights. Jen caught a glimpse of the kitchen as she viewed the property online before visiting as a guest-chef this past October. But, she was surprised once inside the modern marvel— there was something about that sense of warmth she felt. “Although I can be attracted to clean and simple means for living, spaces within those themes can sometimes seem cold, stark, or uninviting. Immediately upon entering the doors of 47 Raymond, I felt a calm, inviting ambiance. This space felt not simple, but intentional, and had a thread of connectivity through its design structure and elements.” It may come as a dual surprise to hear how magnetically she fixed upon the powerful
depth and showcase of lighting in the homeafter-all, she is a woman of business and artistry driven by food. “The natural light pouring into the kitchen made me feel like I could not only stay in that space for a long period of time, but that I wanted to,” she described while commenting on the vital consideration of light when curating any food and wine event. “The open windows brought nature from the outside in, and the minimalist setting supported that illustration. This combination made me feel not alone in this open kitchen, and rather completely emerged in my craft”

Locals embrace the change, as the milder temperatures provide perfect conditions to venture outdoors. hether you find yourself wandering the quaint cobblestone streets of Beacon Hill, exploring the bustling metropolis of the Financial District, or passionately cheering on the Red Sox at Fenway Park, Boston is a city buzzing with energy. THROUGH THE EYES OF Saili Kline @ddskline Written by Meg Johnson
Saili Kline, a well-known Social Media photographer in the Boston area, fits each of these categories. As a mother, a student, a nurse, and an artist Saili is a true reflection of Boston’s dynamic and innovative spirit. Her journey as a photographer began when she relocated from Denver just a few years ago. The desire to share her new home with friends and family led her to Instagram, a tool that allows her to quickly and conveniently capture and share images with loved ones. Over time, she developed a deep appreciation for all that Boston has to offer and her artistic inspirations began to flourish. “The city is not only beautiful, but walkable!” she says, “you can walk, photograph, and learn history while enjoying the sights and sounds.” Inspired by the energy of the city, Saili uses photography to capture the colors, tastes, sounds, and people in each place she visits. The best part about photographing Boston, she says, is capturing the contrast of the old and the new.

33 beaver place reflects the prestigious, oldworld charm that beacon hill is known for
After admiring the gorgeous imagery on her Instagram page, we reached out to Saili in hopes that she would be able to capture the essence of some of our most unique properties from a different perspective. We began at 33 Beaver Place, a newly renovated Carriage House in the heart of Beacon Hill. A sprawling four bed, four-and-a-half bath home, 33 Beaver Place reflects the prestigious, old-world charm that Beacon Hill is known for. With five ornate fireplaces, a gorgeous wood-crafted library, custom crown molding throughout, and an incredible private roof deck, this elegant home is full of intricate details and remarkable character.

Our next stop was 37 Day Street in North Cambridge. This sun-filled, stylish home is a stark contrast to the more traditional style of 33 Beaver Place. Situated in the heart of one of greater Boston’s hippest destinations, Davis Square, 37 Day Street is bright and open with three spacious bedrooms, two-and-a-half luxurious bathrooms, and an abundance of closet space. Flaunting high ceilings, wide-plank oak floors, built-in shelves, and a shiplap-wrapped gas fireplace, this stunning renovation makes for a perfect, modern retreat within an urban village.
Saili’s unique perspective has given us the opportunity to view each property in a new and imaginative way. By comparing the classic intricacies of a historic Beacon Hill home to the modern and stylish amenities of 37 Day Street, we can distinctly see the contrast between the old versus the new, a comparison that sets Boston apart from anywhere else in the world.

SETTING THE
SPACE
Amongst the many historic townhomes that Boston’s South End is so famous for lies a truly unique alternative. After years of meticulous restoration and innovation, six captivating townhouse style homes have transformed this once revered pudding stone church into a symbol of style and luxury. The two remaining residences, each measuring over 4,500 square feet on two levels, are lessons in design and proportion designed by Hendren Associates. Contrasting the original exposed interior stonewalls are perfectly proportioned rooms of the highest quality with contemporary finishes and state-of-the-art systems. Each masterfully crafted Ciuffo-designed custom kitchen is a lesson in quality and taste as well as the ultimate in cooking technology. Contained within the soaring 13-foot ceilings are the finishes and details seldom found outside of a custom build. 8-inch wide European white oak and 8-foot tall doors thoughtfully continue the grand scale. The bathrooms contain the finest quality tile and hardware in a carefully chosen organic palette complimenting the original stone details. Original architectural details were captured and retained, masterfully blending with the modern design aesthetic.

esigned by Arthur Little in 1888, The Joseph Thorp House is a highly unconventional, outstanding and eclectic Colonial Revival masterpiece. With a sympathetic nod to the Queen Anne style, asymmetry abounds, yet all facades are active with Neo-Classical elements, such as columns and pilasters, bays and balconies with delicate balustrades, scrolled corbels, keystone arches. The eclectic interior invokes all classical orders of design including GrecoRoman details and intricately carved teak salon by the American Aesthetic Movement’s Lockwood de Forest. In the southeast corner, the Library incorporates late 19th century Norwegian design with a traditional “peasant” hearth. The truly Classical dining room incorporates a Palladian bay of leaded glass and intimate “Poet’s Corner” adorned with and bas-relief on walls, domed ceiling and mantel delights. The French country kitchen houses the original Walker and Pratt cast-iron stove, modern prep island, sub-zero refrigerators and FiveStar range. www.168BrattleStreet.com
