Luxury Shopping Issue Quoting Gabrielle Chanel may seem a cliché but what the heck, I would. She said,“A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous.” In this issue, we share ways on how to achieve that. Our pages of Shops, Trends and Luxe Buys would bring a number of choices for you to invest in this season. The bags, shoes, eyewear, watches and jewellery would make your hearts beats faster, I know. The special cover we have features an amazing piece of haute couture by designer extraordinaire, Furne One. Recently stepping on the runway in his collection’s appearance at Fashion Forward Season Two (which we covered on Focus), the curly haired couturier lent AW stunning frocks that are highly embellished and remarkable examples of luxurious fashion. Longines

Meanwhile, we also have pages yapping about the Middle East’s ‘it’ girls, and the muchtalked-about Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience. Our exclusive chats with Gc and Chic Shopping Outlet also add awareness on smart luxury shopping. Not to miss are our review of the upscale restaurant, Celebrities, at the most romantic beach resort in the emirates, One&Only Royal Mirage. Our trip to Portugal’s Sintra also proved to be a haven of history, excitement and serenity.

Monochrome Glamour A picture of utter sophistication from the Fall/ Winter 2013 collection by Christian Dior. The collection sees an outburst of Raf Simon’s take on the signature DNA of the luxurious fashion house where his creativity emerges in sheer artistry and delicate choices. This ensemble, standing out among the rest, is a monochrome blend bordering to couture accents, with its highly embroidered geometrical lines that either separates the opposing colours or connects them together. Also a trendy chic, we must say it is still a sample of classic stunner especially when accessorised with a full-on black Dior handbag and pointy pump stiletto. A look we’d want to achieve this season, it is a strong feminine Dior outfit that not only inspires, but also coveted.

Art Visit

Time and again, we want to witness culture, and what better way to do it but in exploring the latest in arts scene. Here, we recommend the deceptively simple Victoria Beckham’s felted wool-blend dress – it’s a fitting piece to wear around artworks especially with its beautiful cut and edgy design. Complete the outfit by pairing it with the sleek Fendi cuffed pump, Chloe’s cuff and shoes. The hint of gold will add life to this ‘I-am-a-serious-lady’ look.

Gucci’s sequin and featherembellished tulle gown

Formal evening gathering requires quite a preparation – finding the right dress, booking the salon, calling for ride, among others. For an ensemble to catch stares, this Gucci’s dramatic ostrich feather and sequinembellished runway gown is an exquisite choice. Channel the embellished opulence by adding Cartier’s dangling earring, Emilio Pucci’s gold-tone crystal and resin ring, Gianvito Rossi’s silk satin sandals, and Alexander McQueen’s box clutch.

High Tea

Balmain’s wool and cashmere-blend sweater

A perfect excuse to be all feminine and dainty is to attend afternoon tea soirees. Since the high tea affairs are growing in popularity then there should be a few times to get this excuse. We say, be the prim and proper princess in this sweet pink Simone Rocha dress with matching Chanel pearls and popping yet another pastel coloured Chanel purse. Hype this look with fierceness by wearing a Christian Louboutin studded suede pumps and an investment piece Balmain blazer.

Ladies Day Out Joining girl friends to a casual day out is a great opportunity to create an effortless laidback look. This time, you can take the Rag & Bone jeans out of the closet, and match it with Balmain’s wool and cashmereblend sweater to create a stylish casual chic. Christian Louboutin flats and Chloe’s shoulder bag are great additions for a clear finish to this offduty glamour.

The one to bag!

Saint Laurent Sac De Jour from the collection of Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane comes in calfskin leather, fine Italian finish and embossed signature is ‘the’ bag of the season. Available in various bright colours, it does attract attention, making it an item of envy.

Investment bags of all time

Gucci Jackie O Before it became, ‘the Bouvier’, Gucci’s iconic bag used to be dubbed as the ‘Jackie O’. Women thronged Gucci stores to ask for ‘the bag that Jackie O always wears’, since the First Lady always carried the double-strapped version everywhere, making the hobo bag a classic chic. Remaining a solid investment, it now comes with out-of-theordinary colours, metallics and prints as of today.

Hermes Birkin Bag The Birkin is the rather large, rather expensive tote bag that has reached a huge iconic status that it makes into song lyrics and TV show scripts, and everyone knows it by name. Looking back, the moment that inspired its birth was on a 1981 airplane flight where Jane Birkin’s over-stuffed purse spilled out into the vicinity of Jean-Louis Dumas-Hermes. Three years later, Hermes introduced a bag that was based on an 1892 design. It was large and meant to accommodate the likes of Jane Birkin’s lifestyle. Its massive desirability even causes a two-year waiting time for a bag. Louis Vuitton Speedy Having been around since 1933, Speedy remains Louis Vuitton’s most iconic bag. It is often referred to as the doctor’s bag or the doctor’s satchel for its resemblance to an old doctor’s bag. The classic version has the interlocking LV monogram, but can also be found in plain leather or with a checkerboard pattern, and in three sizes.

Chanel 2.55 It’s the iconic quilted bag, with a double-chain shoulder strap and interlocking Cs as the clasp. Launched in February of 1955, hence the moniker, 2.55, the bag’s feature actually reveals parts of the life of Mademoiselle Gabrielle Chanel. The brown lining is the colour of uniforms from the convent where she grew up, the inside zippered compartment on the front flap is where she hid her love letters, the back outside flap is where she stashed her extra money, and the shoulder straps – which were uncommon on luxury items at the time – are there because she saw nothing unfeminine about having her hands free. Now, it comes in various styles and colours aside from the iconic black one.

Iconic Manolo Blahnik blue satin pumps

LUXE BUYS

Shoemakers worth knowing After Carrie Bradshaw made a huge name out of Manolo Blahnik, women have had the option of exploring other shoe designers such as Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin. Yet, of late, other shoemakers started getting under the fashion radar, making them a favourite among A-list celebrities and fashion personalities. In this issue, AW lists the names you need to know when it comes to shoe shopping.

27

LUXE BUYS

Manolo Blahnik Shoes from this luxury brand symbolise a classic style. It is hard to imagine that it actually went against the grain in the middle part of the ‘70s when popular designs were boots and chunky platform shoes. Blahnik ignored the trend and instead focused his attention to creating the stiletto heel. The move paid off, and this design has become its mainstay up to now.

Sergio Rossi Sergio Rossi inherited all the tools and traditions of a great Italian artisan from his father. He reproduced the skills and then enhanced them, as though he had been reciting a lesson learnt by heart. His philosophy was simple: to create beautiful shapes. To think of a shoe not as superimposed ornament but as the continuation of the body: well adjusted, comfortable, cosmetic, and designed for the movement of a contemporary woman.

Nicholas Kirkwood Though Nicholas Kirkwood has his share of regular pumps, he makes a splash by playing with platforms, along with alluring lace ups, and colours.

Charlotte Olympia Charlotte Olympia’s signature ‘island’ platforms offer height and a distinctive look. Jennifer Lopez, Estelle, Erica Reid, and Kim Kardashian have all worn a pair, sidling up to the brand’s vertiginous heels.

Giuseppe Zanotii Nicki Minaj wasn’t joking when she referred to Giuseppe Zanotti heels as ‘the monster shoes’. From sneakers to pumps to heel-less sandals and wedges, Zanotti has it all – and celebrities are clear fans.

28

LUXE BUYS Brian Atwood Want conservative class? Opt for Brian Atwood. They are made in Italy and they have been described as the type that would make other people stop and stare. The remarkable thing about Brian Atwood’s shoes is its ability to enhance a woman’s legs. The stilettos were made in such a way that the wearer’s limbs would look long and lean, even as it maintains a comfort that is often sacrificed in the name of aesthetics. The luxury brand also has high thigh boots that are sold at a high price point, which reflects its quality and emphasises its exclusivity.

Walter Steiger Walter Steiger has been known for his unique and innovative designs that have practically changed the entire shoe industry. The brand’s creations are considered classics. The brand has been around since 1932 when it used to tailor shoes to an exclusive clientele. It has since worked with some of the leading fashion houses and designers like Karl Lagerfeld, Nina Ricci and Oscar de la Renta.

Christian Louboutin Christian Loboutin made the high heels even higher. Hard as it is to walk with, the trend has caught on and is probably here to stay. The shoes from this luxury brand are instantly recognisable by a bright red sole that has become its signature. The French footwear designer has been counterfeited so many times that the company has actually put up a site dedicated solely to identifying the fake stores.

Camilla Skovgaard Danish designer Camilla Skovgaard makes shoes her own with signature spiky, serrated rubber soles. Whether playing on sandals or pumps, the soles render regular shoes fun, edgy, and walking works of art.

Jimmy Choo This is one of the most sought-after shoe brands in the world. Stars like Cate Blanchett, Hillary Swank and Halle Berry have worn a pair to the Academy Awards. Just like the shoe, all three have come out winners. The brand was launched in the middle part of the 1980s in London. The shoes always feature excellent artistry, thus allowing the brand to gain a loyal following.

Stuart Weitzman Stuart Weitzman is known for his one-of-a-kind, million-dollar shoes. He usually provides it to a nominee in the annual Academy Awards where the fashion in the red carpet is scrutinised to the very last detail. There was a bit of controversy in 2007, however, when the woman that Weitzman chose declined to wear the shoes. The company’s trademark is the use of unique materials not usually used for shoe-making. These include such materials as cork, vinyl, Lucite, wallpaper and 24-karat gold.

Watches are the investment buys usually associated with men. But thanks to the growing number of successful women, the watchmakers recognise the strength of the feminine market. With great designs and the highest quality, women now have several options for whenever they need a time check.

It’s time! 33

LUXE BUYS Here, AW shortlists the most notable timepieces perfect for the discerning sophisticated breed of women… Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 7200 Fully focused on hours and minutes, this ladies watch epitomises timelessness in classic, feminine perfection. With case back of sapphire-crystal glass, the discreet gem in 18K rose gold with its fantastic mechanical inner life is worn on a matt pearly beige alligator strap with a rose-gold prong buckle.

Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 7121 The collection of moonphase watches for ladies welcomes a newcomer, which features a sparkling Milky Way with 66 brilliant cut diamonds on the bezel. Its debut is ideally timed since mechanical watches rank at the very top of the wish lists of style-conscious, self-confident women. The creamcoloured dial is suave and feminine; its fine-grained texture gives it a silky look.

Corum Admiral’s Cup Legend 38 Diamonds and sapphires play a fascinating musical score, backed by a symphony orchestrated around 1,444 stones totalling 11.56 carats. The Admiral’s Cup Legend 38 is available with a white crocodile leather strap fitted with a white gold folding clasp set with 20 diamonds (approx. 0.21 cts).

34

Chanel Le Montre Premiere The Chanel Premiere watch was first created in 1987 as the brand’s first women’s timepiece, modelled after the shape of the Chanel No. 5 perfume bottle stopper and the Place Vendôme. Its newest iteration has a chic bracelet style that’s refreshingly modern and is available in steel, yellow gold or white gold, with or without diamonds and either black lacquered or mother of pearl face.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Lady 31 An ode to passion and beauty, the Oyster Perpetual Datejust Lady 31 offers a contemporary blend of colours and materials in a 31mm size, while remaining firmly anchored in the lineage and timeless elegance of Rolex’s iconic Datejust.

BVLGARI BVLGARI CATENE Approximately 140g of pink gold form a beautifully subtle extension of the 18k gold case which bears not just the double logo on its bezel, but also a mother of pearl dial featuring 12 brilliant cut 0.133 carat diamonds and a rubelite cabochon accenting the ridged crown.

A Ladymatic with a Luxury Flower Dial This eye-catching OMEGA Ladymatic in 18K red gold has a bezel paved with 184 full-cut diamonds. Its dial has been imaginatively designed in 18K gold with mother-of-pearl marquetry and diamonds set in the shape of a flower made up of five interlocking OMEGA logos. The watch is presented on a white mother-of-pearl effect satin-brushed leather strap and an 18K red gold foldover clasp. The strap’s links are decorated with 154 full-cut snow-set diamonds. In fact, the watch has 399 diamonds altogether with a total weight of nearly 2 carats! Inside the case is the OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8421, a state-of-the-industry mechanical movement with a luxury finish. Its four year warranty is the beginning of a lifetime relationship.

LUXE BUYS Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Relief Seasons A timepiece that celebrates the enchantment of birds, the model comes in two versions: one version for fall in red gold enhanced by warm colours and a winter version in diamond-set white gold dominated by colder tones, each available in a limited edition of 88.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Montre Extraordinaire La Rose This watch blooms in a crystalline version, illuminating the wrist with nearly 14 carats of diamonds. Its corolla sculpted in white gold is fully covered with precious stones accentuating the delicacy and movement of overlapping petals. Fashioned by the skilled hands of true craftsmen, this piece celebrates the most complex of setting techniques: the snow-setting.

Jaquet Droz The Loving Butterfly It is the brand’s first wristwatch to be offered in a yellow gold case, in honour of the 275th anniversary of Jaquet Droz. On the back of this model, offered in a limited edition of only 28 pieces, the oscillating mass in white gold and the hand engraved decoration on the case-back are displayed for all to see.

Perrelet Unique Diamond Flower It offers a ritual renewal of the magic relating to the myths and symbols embodied by the lotus flower. Diamonds peek through the outer petals forming the hour-markers, while Roman numerals signalling the main hours lend a touch of classical elegance. The 36.5mm steel case comes in its simplest version in pure metal, or in its more precious variation featuring a bezel studded with 88 diamonds.

La Grande Classique de Longines 100 Diamonds It maintains all the characteristics of the original creations of this emblematic collection but now combines the classical elegance of those ultra-slim models – only 4.60mm – with the sparkle of 100 diamonds.

SAINT HONORE Royal Coloseo Arranged in three tiers on the bezel, the ‘EclairTM’ finish is wonderfully sumptuous and feminine. While the chapter ring with Roman numerals and eight diamonds encloses a delicately decorated motherof-pearl dial centre, the redesigned case is completed with a crown topped by a black onyx, the signature of the Coloseo line.

Breguet Reine de Naples ‘Day/Night’ 8998 Breguet’s Reine de Naples collection is inspired by an early bracelet watch A.-L. Breguet created for Bonaparte’s sister Caroline, Queen of Naples. Hailing from the collection, the ‘Day/Night’ 8998 with case is in 18-carat white gold, bezel and dial flange set with 143 diamonds (approximately 1.45 carats), and crown set with a briolette diamond (approximately 0.26 carats).

Hermes Arceau H Cube This watch, made of straw, has a geometric view that is emphasised by a white gold case featuring a diameter of 41mm and asymmetrical attachments. It is powered by an H1837 Manufacture movement that can be seen through the sapphire crystal case back.

7. Penhaligon’s Vaara A fragrance inspired by the city of Jodhpur in Rajasthan, it is modern and intensely atmospheric – a fragrance fit for a Maharajah, full of charm and majesty. 8. Angel Schlesser Absolute Oriental It defines what is essential in an exclusive fragrance. The fragrance is wrapped in exclusive packaging that is elegant and sober, precious and warm, with black as the main colour and gold as a luminous element; aesthetics that combine European chic with Oriental taste. 9. Very Irrésistible by Givenchy Ten years, three olfactory variations based on the rose (2003 – Eau de Toilette, 2005 – Eau de Parfum, 2011 – Intense) and still the same audacious desire to blend French elegance with American glamour. Very Irrésistible’s sparkling charm never ceases to amaze.

Moschino Forever Sailing Fresh as a sea breeze, it’s a unique blend of classical notes and vibrant sensations, where the aroma of sensual Amber woods and the delicacy of Musk and Patchouli are open to a ‘blue-sky’ accord with notes of Lavender and Juniper berries, and reveal a harmony of icy Mint, emphasised by accents of Primofiore Lemon and Grapefruit.

Chopard’s Oud Malaki Oud Malaki means ‘Royal Oud’ in Arabic, a fitting name for the most luxurious interpretation of this noble accord. Powerful, seductive and passionately masculine, this connoisseur’s blend expresses the sensual personality of the Oud Malaki man, a lover of life’s finer pleasures and of beautiful objects.

GUESS Night It’s a seductively masculine and magnetic men’s fragrance. Playfully spicy and woody, GUESS Night is bursting with heady, energetic notes to keep you going until the sun comes up.

9. Azzaro Chrome United The rich and subtle dry down of a musky-woody accord immortalises an escapade amongst friends: sweet and sensual white musk, borrowed from the original Chrome, becomes one with cedar wood. It’s a fresh, woody musky fragrance.

When choosing your makeup, you are always told to consider your skin tone as it plays a very important role. However, as make-up artist Michelle Waldron shows us, eye colour, and also the colour of your hair, are just as vital to achieving a great natural look.

Brittany Snow There’s a really youthful glow to Brittany’s look and she definitely proves that pale can be interesting! Start off by using bourjois ‘healthy mix foundation’. For barely there skin, apply using a beauty blender sponge. If like Brittany you have ash blonde hair soft hues of pink and rose toned pinks work really well as blush and lip shades. Be careful not to choose anything that has too much of a blue tone in it or blushes and lipsticks with frosted silvery tones running through them as they can wash you out completely. For your blush shade try Chanel joules contrast in shade ‘rose petale 99’. Lightly sweep it across the apple of your cheeks using a blusher brush like MAC 129. For the lips, one of my favourite nude rose shades is Benefit’s ‘Skinny dip’ which is a silky finish lipstick in a nude pink shade. Brittany has left her eyebrows quiet natural, it can be quite hard for blondes to find the right shade of brow pencil. Laura Mercier does a great range of eyebrow pencils suitable for blondes. If you really want to make your eyes pop like Brittany choose a jet black mascara like Smashbox’s ‘bionic lash’ to finish off the look.

Olga Kurylenko To get Olga’s glowing skin try mixing some MAC strobe cream along with your regular foundation or using it as a highlight and applying along the tips of your cheekbones, bridge of your nose and over your cupids bow. Brunettes with green eyes like Olga look amazing with Khaki coloured eyeshadow tones. Line the eyes with Giorgio Armani eyeliner pencil in shade2, a chocolate brown and smudge along the lash line. Next apply Lancome 502 absolute jade, which is a shimmering gold khaki tone. For high definition lash try Dior show ‘Iconic’ mascara. Brunettes can pull off quite a strong eyebrow shape. Using Benefit’s brow zings in shade medium shape your eyebrow with the wax side and then apply the shadow over it. For the cheeks Olga has gone with a flush of colour. Benefit’s posie tint is ideal to create this, just lightly dab on using your fingertips. The lips are very simple as the eyes are quite striking and you need to create a balance. A natural baby pink lipgloss like MAC baby sparks dazzle glass gives a very fresh plumped lip effect.

Isla Fisher For flame haired beauties like Isla when choosing a foundation and/or powder steer away from anything too pink toned. Most cosmetic companies offer a large range of yellow based foundations. Dainty doll by Nicola Roberts is a cosmetic range designed especially with red heads and pale skinned beauties in mind. Also being red haired you need to ensure you’re wearing adequate sunscreen protection so try opt for a foundation that has an SPF30 minimum where possible. Try avoid anything too orange/red toned when it comes to your blush and lip shades. Opt for peach and apricot shades as they lend a warm glow to cheeks. MAC ‘Style’, a coral/peach blush with golden pearl accents running through it is perfect to achieve the warm glow seen here on Isla. For your eyebrows choose soft auburn shades like Illamasques eyebrow cake in shade ‘stark’. As Isla proves here smokey eyes work well on redheads so don’t shy away from dramatic looks! L’Oreal Paris ‘Autumn leaves’ quad palette is perfect to achieve this smokey look. Red heads do tend to have very pale eyelashes so I would recommend having your lashes tinted with a brown black shade to get more definition for your eyes. To get her bambi eye allure line your eyes with a black kohl pencil like Maxfactor kohl pencil #20 along the inside waterline of your eye and the outside line. To complete the look apply Rouge Dior in shade 435, a slightly glossy coral to your lips.

The faces

of luxury Beautiful and rich, the women hailing from the most notable families in the Middle East are equally heralded on the international front. Having lived a lifestyle so lavish that borrowing private jets is a no-no, because they own them, and owning a huge collection of haute couture pieces, shoes and jewels deemed too big for even a museum to exhibit, they are certainly the ladies who’d know what true luxury is.

Mouna Ayoub The Lebanese stunner, with a life quite analogous with American icon Elizabeth Taylor, is the one of the most visible haute couture patrons. Once married to Saudi billionaire Nasser al-Rashi, Mouna Ayoub has endowed herself with a million-dollar yacht, a staggering number of iconic jewels and a huge collection of dresses housed in a French chateau. After her divorce, she was renowned for her revelations in her memoir, ‘La vérité’, and even made more millions for herself in investing in real estate, making her one of the richest in the Middle East.

Wafah Dufour Dropping her bin Ladin name and adopting her maiden name did not put Wafah Dufour out of the spotlight. Born into a clan with an estimated net worth of billions of dollars, the young aspiring singer attracts attention with her pretty Saudi, Swiss and Iranian roots. Her interviews with Barbara Walters, a sexy spread in GQ and an album to boot, this daughter of Yeslam bin Ladin clearly wanted a place of her own in the limelight.

Jasmine and Camilla Al Fayed Dubbed as the Hilton sisters of the Middle East, Jasmine and Camilla are the daughters of Egyptian mogul Mohamed Al Fayed. Camilla Al Fayed is more known as the glamour girl who used to make party rounds in New York, London and Paris. Her recent splashing in the news was when she announced ownership in the Duchess of York’s favourite fashion brand, Issa. Meanwhile, educated at London College of Fashion and Central St. Martin’s, Jasmine Al Fayed takes a more behind-the-stage presence by focusing on designing for her own label, Jasmine de Milo, that debuted in a show held at The Ritz-Carlton Paris. Yet, despite the hundreds of millions that their father has, the siblings want to pull their weight doing some work. As Daily Mail quoted Camilla saying,“Not working would be a waste of life.”

It seems like her royal title, born out of her marriage to Prince Abdulaziz Bin Nasser Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, son of Prince Nasser bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, won’t be necessary for her to gather lots of great impression; apparently her killer wardrobe was all she needed to land the pages of Vogue and Huffington Post, and to show off her undeniable agenda to break the stereotypes on Saudi women.

Over the four days, guests saw 23 designers’ collections across 21 catwalk shows, more than 30 of the most influential regional and international fashion experts who addressed audiences through 15 discussions as part of the ‘d3 Fashion Talks’, while guests and buyers alike were able to shop at over 50 collections of regionally made accessories in The Garden. Established and emerging designers from Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, KSA, Qatar and the wider UAE, presented their latest Spring/Summer ’14 collections to packed halls. Over 50 regional and international buyers attended over the four days as well as strong presence from top-tier media, from across the GCC, Europe and the US. The designers’ runway presentations were also live-streamed worldwide. Alongside the runway presentations was a series of talks and panel discussions, supporting FFWD’s vision to foster debate and nurture the growth of the regional fashion industry. These discussions were in partnership with Dubai Design District (d3), and form the ‘d3 Fashion talks’. O

ne of the most remarkable beach resorts in Dubai is our favourite One&Only Royal Mirage. It is a stunning piece of Middle Eastern architecture set amidst Jumeirah Beach Road. Its shoreline is one that beach aficionados long for, and its quiet vibe promising serenity while still being in the heart of the city is simply astonishing. The blend of traditional ambiance and contemporary glam makes the hotel a perfect go-to destination for special occasions. Dining at its stylish Celebrities restaurant, for one thing, is an excuse in itself for the city residents to step into One&Only Royal Mirage’s resplendent lobby. And, having learnt that a new a la carte menu is on the table, we did not let the opportunity pass in paying a visit and taking a bite.

Home smoked and confit salmon with caviar and pineapple dressing

With the spectacular view of The Palace, the striking beauty of this dining venue appears mainly from its lavish and classy interior. The long staircase from the lobby, leading to the entrance of the restaurant is just an opener for a more elegant atmosphere. The crystal chandeliers, the sleek marble bar, lacquered tabletops, and soft black leather and velvet lounge seating only add to the sophisticated glamour of the already chic restaurant. Celebrities’ newly opened quaint outdoor chill-out lounge is the best spot to sip the post-dinner Jasmine Tea, or any drink or that would match its ‘tapas style’ hors d’oeuvre. The highly coveted Private Dining Room would be a better venue for guests who opt for a bit more privacy. The room’s grand mirrors, huge centerpiece table and dramatic lighting complemented by an outdoor wooden deck overlooking the lush gardens and reflecting pool is the ideal setting for 10-20 people who need to celebrate in exclusivity. Finding our way to our seat through these impressive interiors was easy because of the welcoming staff of the restaurant. With their beautiful smiles and efficient demeanour, we were ushered to a table where we could marvel the hotel’s beautiful garden and beach landscape even in the darkness of the evening. Celebrities’ cuisine is inspired by classic European dishes, meant to satisfy the most discerning palates. The restaurant’s team – from the staff to its manager – was always ready to explain any question on the menu, allowing the guests to fully understand the

food they would be partaking. In this time and age when people would have various sensitivities on certain food, it is good that Celebrities pays cautious attention. Getting further into the menu, we decided to start our gastronomical journey at Celebrities with home smoked and confit salmon with caviar and pineapple dressing, and maine lobster salad with grilled spring vegetables and herbs dressing. The salmon was a huge portion for a single person to devour, but its delicate texture and delightful combination of salty freshness of seafood and sweet and sour hints of pineapple provided a succulent opener. The lobster salad, on one hand, was the appetising starter that left a notable impression on how the next set of dishes would be. Moving on with main course, we opted for medium well portions of wagyu and duck. The wagyu fillet, accented with black pepper and raisin sauce, was paired with green beans and artichoke. Scrumptious as it looked, every bite of the striking softness of the beef was a delectable journey. The traces of spice were balanced by the healthy

flavours of the vegetables. Meanwhile, the roasted duck magret with spices, coupled with crispy polenta and peach, was a serious dish meant for the poultry fans. Served better rare, this dish exudes a rather strong meaty essence that those with acquired taste would tremendously and hugely appreciate. The dessert options were both sinful and divine. And despite our overly satiated digestive, we went for Celebrities’ signature coconut soufflé with pineapple and fresh mint sorbet. The waiting time of 15 minutes was worth it for the soufflé as the most unique and most delicious we’ve savoured in Dubai. The time to bid farewell to One&Only Royal Mirage’s Celebrities came after we had our tea but we found ourselves relishing the journey of finding ourselves in an exquisite haven of delectable offers set amidst the stylish atmosphere obviously meant for intimate and elegant affairs. The hotel’s restaurant is most fitting for romantic celebrations, intimate dinners or stylish soirees, but it is also a perfect excuse to fill the craving for great food.

Family fun & fitness For the times you want to make staying healthy and keeping fit a family affair, join a fun event or check out these ideas and offerings from the fitness experts.

Healthy eating starts with the parents Children learn from their parents and family, and look to them to learn everything, including eating healthy and being physically active! Studies show that parents have a big impact on how children develop their nutrition behaviour as they grow and start making food choices of their own. The way parents talk about food, prepare meals and eat are essential influences in encouraging healthy eating habits on children. Maria Abi Hanna, Dietitian at Right Bite, explained,“Contrary to common notion, young children are very well able to understand basic nutrition. Parents should not assume that teaching kids

about healthy food choices would be too confusing and complex. They have to keep in mind that children are by nature curious and would want to understand how things work. They should instead capitalise on children’s curiosity to make them understand why they need to eat healthy foods.” “Make sure your little one eats three main meals and two healthy snacks at least each day, keeping in mind that breakfast is the most important of them all! Our brain only gets glucose as a nutrient, so kick off your kid’s day with a healthy balanced breakfast. Start your meal with salad and choose your main meals wisely – remembering the Five-a-day rule – that is, to include five portions of fruits and vegetables for your child every day. Children also tend to eat what is readily available, so for snacks, it is always better to keep a fruit bowl on the kitchen counter instead of a basket of chips and chocolate. Also, offer your little one water throughout the day. It should be their first choice as beverage, and don’t let them indulge in sodas or fruit juices.” Maria also advised parents not to use food as a reward for a good behaviour or a job well done.“The key to raising healthy eaters is to focus on feeding strategies that are long-term. When parents use food as a reward, they unknowingly instil in their children’s minds incorrect perception about food, which the kids can take with them to their adult lives. Occasional sweets are fine, but don’t turn dessert into the main reason for eating dinner. It sends them the message that desserts, sugary and high-fat foods are the good foods, and that they can become comfort food for them.”

Join more than 17,000 people to pace five kilometres around Yas Marina Circuit at Walk 2013 on November 15 to mark World Diabetes Day. The annual walkathon is organised in Abu Dhabi by Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) with the support of Active Life from the National Health Insurance Company – Daman. Walk 2013 is part of Walk for Life, a pillar of ICLDC’s long-running public health awareness campaign, ‘Diabetes-KnowledgeAction’, under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak. The campaign has reached out to more than 177,000 people since its launch in 2007 with the aim of educating the community on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle through a balanced diet and regular exercise. Suhail Mahmood Al Ansari, Chairman of Imperial College London Diabetes Centre and Executive Director of Mubadala Healthcare noted that this year marks the seventh annual Walk.“Walk 2013 is an important initiative which sees the community come together to raise awareness for diabetes, and most importantly, encourage the adoption of a healthier lifestyle. It is our intention that through initiatives like Walk for Life, we help bring awareness to the small lifestyle changes that can help to manage diabetes, or prevent it altogether.”

health said Luck. As part of their mission to encourage the start of family fitness, Pure Fitness launched ‘BuggEfit” in order to provide a safe environment for mothers to exercise with their babies in sight. Five years ago this consisted of a couple of classes a week, today it is their top Mother and Baby fitness class, with over 60 classes a month.

Pure Fitness Pure Fitness is dedicated to helping families incorporate fitness and health into their daily lives. Inspired by their very own experiences of health, nutrition and fitness, co-owners Catherine Williams and Elaine Luck have converted their knowledge into their programmes, and encouraging babies and young children to witness their mothers’ being healthy and active is key to the company identity. When it comes to exercise and foodie fads, you name it, they’ve both tried it and witnessed it all. But it is these learnings together with research and study that forms the basis of their beliefs. As fitness experts and as mothers, Williams and Luck feel confident that they are moving their families in as healthy a direction as possible. Of course, it doesn’t always go smoothly! “It is all about finding out what works for you and your family. The focus should be varied and healthy nutrition with some cheats and treats here and there,” said Luck. “You also want to find some activities that work for all family members and some that

don’t.” Both women agree that everyone in a family has different interests and different abilities, and it is important to accept and welcome this. Children might not be into traditional team sports but they may love the likes of archery, or paddle boarding, which is perfectly suited to the great Dubai weather. The Luck and Williams families join up for beach sports and often go kayaking and paddle boarding together. “These sports are great for Dubai; there is the perfect weather and they are so easily accessible. You can rent equipment at various beaches here, and so purchasing expensive kit need not be a deterrent,” said Williams. When on dry land, their children have different sporting interests. Luck’s kids love all team sports, as does Williams’s son (providing they involve balls), whereas her daughter likes to keep fit through drama and dance. “As families, it is so important to the discover what works for who, or you risk losing out to the world of fast food, video games and Reality TV. Health is a gift but it is up to individuals to maintain it,”

“There are conditioning classes, boot camps, nutrition and fat loss programmes, as well as online programmes for mothers to do at home. We are constantly finding new ways to open up opportunities for our lovely mummy clients,” said Williams. One of the many benefits of these classes is that from a couple of months old and onwards, little ones witness their mums doing the best they can to get in shape and be healthy as a normal part of their lives. Babies graduate from watching with bemused expressions from a pram to sitting on a play mat with a bag of toys, to joining in. “When the toddlers join in it is great,” said Luck,“especially when they get their hands on the boxing gloves! No one minds if a baby is crying or a nappy needs to be changed. The uniting and welcoming factor is that everyone including the qualified instructors are all mothers.” Testament to Pure Fitness’ success is happy mummy, mother of three, Amy Hughes,“I love the classes and exercise I do at Pure Fitness, and its really making a difference to my mind and body, but I particularly love that my children are witnessing me exercising and hopefully they will take this through into their lives.”

k Quick tips b y Reebo • • • • •

Parents are very strong role models for their children – what kids see Mum and Dad doing, they are likely to want to do it too! Kids love being active with their parents – it’s fun, interactive and a great time to bond as a family. You don’t have to be a particularly sporty person to encourage your children to be active – go for a walk, go for a bike ride together, go for a swim. There are more and more parks available in Dubai, and a few of them now have specific bike paths or areas for skateboards, scooters etc. Get involved in the action too – the kids will love it, and you will too! Colour run in December? Sign the whole family up, and do it together. Take a football (or any kind of ball) out in the backyard and kick it around with the kids – get the whole neighbourhood involved!

F

lying seven hours from Dubai was no joke, but the long flight was well compensated when we arrived at the Aeroporto de Lisboa (Lisbon’s international airport). Our pick-up came on time, and in brief exchange on the way to the hotel, we’ve made our initial impression of the Portuguese: they are welcoming, friendly and warm. With history of grandeur and colonies (remember, with Spain, they divided the world in half), we suspected the Portuguese to be obnoxious and proud. But, in the end, we were proven wrong. Everyone speaks English to make it easy for the tourists to converse. They engage in long discussions to every tourist, every nationality, making no discrimination at all. They tell tales about their country, but never fail to listen to their guests’ own stories. They are very thoughtful hosts, ensuring that their guests enjoy each moment of their stay – mindful of what their guests need even if that entails leaving them alone for some leisure time on their own. They are ready to lend hands and extend their services, yet most of all they are always

travel ready to share a big smile, giving a sense of relief to tourists. But the beauty of Portugal does extend beyond its people. The country, however small it appears in the world map, is a breathtaking land that is filled with palaces, castles, mystery, history and fashion. Its capital, Lisboa (Lisbon), is a magnificent city that is clean, safe and vibrant. Buzzing with tourists, the capital offers a sense of security among travellers since it’s safe to walk around even in the middle of the night. The museums, the streets, the malls and markets are not only great sightseeing spots – they are also perfect locations to bag great finds.

Capuchos Convent

When in Portugal, it would be a pity to simply marvel at country’s capital. Travellers are advised to pursue their journey to other cities. For some religious devotees, Fatima is a must. For beach fanatics, the Azores, Guincho and Madeira would be heaven. But, for those of us looking for some luxurious time (meaning serenity mixed with excitement and history), Sintra, a town classified as world heritage by UNESCO, is the place to be.

made stops in neighbouring spots such as Estoril, Cascais and Guincho. The laidback vibe of Estoril and the picturesque view of Cascais kept us awake during our ride.

On our road trip to Sintra from Lisboa, we

What to do In a quiet city like Sintra, you may opt to explore the historical side of Portugal, stroll around its quaint market places or simply stay at its post-palace luxury hotels. In our case, we went to do all.

Palace of Monserrate

The two-day stay at the hilly Sintra was a breeze, but the memories of the breathtaking landscapes, rich history, amazing food, great weather, and friendliest people would stay forever in our minds and hearts.

There are a number of beautiful palaces, castles and museums but we’re guided to first visit the Convento dos Capuchos. Tucked away up of Sintra, the ‘Capuchos Convent’ or ‘Cork Convent’ was established in 1560 by Dom Álvaro de Castro, Counsellor of State to King Sebastião, with the name Convento de Santa Cruz da Serra de Sintra. It is noteworthy for the extreme poverty of its construction, which represents the ideal of the Order of St. Francis of Assisi, and for the extensive use of cork in the protection and decoration of its small spaces. Another noteworthy place is the Parque e Palacio de Monserrate. A stunning piece of nature located 4km away from the historic centre of Sintra, the park houses thousands of botanical species and a grand Palace that is under rehabilitation after years of being abandoned. While here, take time to feel the rich history of the palace, marvel at its beauty and enjoy the opportunity to have had the chance to step into it. The National Palace of Sintra, located in the

travel Palace of Pena

historic town centre, should also be in the must-visit list. It was inhabited for nearly eight centuries by the Portuguese monarchy and its court. It was much used, particularly during the middle ages, as a hunting retreat and as a refuge from outbreaks of diseases in the capital, or as a summer resort, thanks to the town’s more agreeable climate. The building combines various architectural styles. Gothic and Manueline elements are particularly visible, as is the Mudéjar style – a harmonious combination of Muslim and Christian artistic influences –, immediately apparent in the exuberant HispanoMoresque tiling. The collections displayed within the Palace also bear artistic witness to the multicultural nature of Portuguese decorative art between the 16th and 18th centuries. When it comes to palaces, Sintra boasts having the Park and Palace of Pena that are Portugal’s greatest example of 19th-century Romanticism and the most important element in the Cultural Landscape of Sintra – World Heritage Site. Established on top of the hill as a result of the creative genius of Ferdinand II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, king consort and husband of Queen Maria II, it incorporates architectural references of Manueline and Moorish influence which gave rise to a surprising ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ effect. Meanwhile, not to miss when in Sintra is the Moorish Castle, a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the 8th and 9th centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as

a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings. It was acquired and restored as a medieval ruin, also in keeping with the romantic taste of the period, by Ferdinand II. Where to stay From boutique hotels to luxury hotels, Sintra is filled with the best places to stay. With a stroke of good luck, we were hosted at the best of the bests: the Hotel Tivoli Palacio de Seteais. More than just a five-star accommodation, this hotel offers the elegance and architecture of the XVIII century. Aside from the spectacular views of Moorish Castle and Pena Palace, the Hotel Tivoli Palacio de Seteais also offers the magnificent surroundings of lush gardens and remarkable scenery. Its beautifully decorated rooms furnished with luxurious interior, its ballrooms, lobby and

aisle are draped with rich tapestries and incredible chandeliers. Spending time in this hotel is magical – it transformed us to that time when ball gowns were casual fashion, and carriages were means of royal transportation. Sleeping and waking up in this lavish environment is a dream come true, allowing us royal accommodation, making us imagine being queens even for two nights. Where to eat Eating in Portugal is easy but eating great food was what we wanted. The choices given to us were great starting with the amazing restaurant at the Fortaleza do Guincho, a five-star hotel overlooking the famous shoreline of Guincho (featured in James Bond film). The view was fantastic, the service was efficient, and the food was sumptuous. It was after this scrumptious meal that we headed to our first destination in Sintra. Our next journey to culinary wonderland was in The Mix Restaurant at the remarkable boutique hotel, Farol Design Hotel, located between the powdered sands of Guincho Beach and the picturesque fishing village of Cascais. The interior was patterned in contemporary glamour, emphasising the chic fashion the hotel is known for. It offers flavours of Mediterranean fusion, all fresh and mouthwatering. Last but not least, on our last night at Sintra, we travelled to the neighbouring Cascais to taste some traditional food. The quaint restaurant at Vila Bicuda, a luxurious resort, filled us with gastronomical wonders. It was indeed a fitting cap to our stay: great food and great companions. A glimpse at Chic Outlet Shopping® Admit it. Travels are never complete without shopping. May it be a simple key chain to commemorate the visit or a fridge magnet to give away as homecoming present, one has to bag something during his travel. So, what happens when one travels to a place where high-end fashion is sold at hugely discounted price? Well, no one would argue that that place – in Europe’s case is Chic Outlet Shopping® – has to be a must in the to-visit list. “We are usually an hour’s drive away from the city. And, you can conveniently schedule a pickup with your hotel’s concierge for a good ride to our village,” said Desiree M. Bollier, Chief Executive at Value Retail Management. In AW’s exclusive chat to her, she explained the fantastic experience travelers have during their visit at Chic Outlet Shopping®. According to her, the day trip to the village would constitute luxurious time as they offer valet parking, hands-free shopping, stylists, personal shoppers, VIP rooms and playgrounds for children so the mums and dads can shop at leisure. The whole feel is like a five-star service, she noted. Plus,

the brands that shoppers covet – Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Ermenigildo Zegna, Armani, Carolina Herrera and Loewe – are available for purchase in good amount of discount. The Chic Outlet Shopping® Villages offer savings of up to 60% (and sometimes more) on the recommended retail price of recent collections – mostly from within the past year – of many of the world’s most prestigious luxury fashion and lifestyle brands. Top labels local to each Village make for a unique shopping mix – usually about 80% top international brands and 20% niche local – which gives every Village a great sense of individuality. There are nine Villages within Western Europe, each strategically placed to attract both local markets and incoming clients from surrounding countries, and each within easy reach of one or more of the

Each Village contains between 60 and 140 individual boutiques, all arranged along open-air malls designed to reflect the vernacular architecture of the region on an intimate scale and to give a flavour of the unique local culture and ambience. Boutiques are interspersed with cafés, restaurants and other service areas so that customers can linger and enjoy an entertaining retail experience. For many, it is as much part of a holiday or a day out as a shopping trip and ensuring that visitors have a relaxing and memorable time is a priority for Value Retail. Each Village has occasional cultural spin-offs specific to its region – an annual pop-up boutique for the work of Britain’s much-vaunted young designers at Bicester Village, for example, and regular modern art exhibitions in the gallery space, Espace La Vallée®, at La Vallée Village. Ms. Bollier also mentioned that shopping tourism gets a stronger boost especially with the growth of travelers to 1 billion as estimated by UNWTO in the next years. She also said that the UAE ranks fifth in the most number of visitors they get from countries but the level of spending from the emirates, and the region in whole, is stronger as compared to the others. With these amazing developments, they begin to partner with travel and tourism organizations, here in the Middle East specifically, in order to provide special and exclusive packages to the visitors from the region. It’s always a great time to shop at their villages, Ms. Bollier concluded, but they also conduct private sales for VIP customer, and they have a month-long official sale season during July when they offer as much as 80% discount on last season’s collections.

A Lux Love Affair

There is perhaps no city more synonymous with luxury and opulence than Dubai. But how did it reach that stage, and will it last?

I

f Las Vegas taught the world anything, it’s the fact that no matter how hostile an environment may seem to be, having the right vision and implementation can transform any arid area into a thriving city. And with that success, Middle East nations have followed suit. One in particular, has reached the dizzying heights of global fame; the UAE. Mention the UAE and Dubai springs immediately into mind. Little wonder given the opulence and extravagance that it has been associated with in the last decade or so. Just to give you a taste, did you know that Dubai has one of the highest, if not the highest, ownership of luxury sports vehicles per capital in the world? And even the police force is joining in when they added the Ferraris and Lamborghinis into their patrol fleet. And then there’s the luxury shopping; Dubai being a utopia of sorts for those

chasing everything high-end. However, though the UAE is a regional hub for luxury shopping, it is still much smaller in comparison to other cities.“The NYC luxury market alone is about 3 times the size of the entire MENA luxury market. Besides sheer size, brand diversity and product (collection) availability are also aspects that make certain metropolises better shopping destinations than others,” says Kunal Kapoor, founder of The Luxury Closet, an online retail store that deals with high-end merchandise. And that innate drive to be the best in everything is pushing Dubai’s luxury shopping scene to heights never before imagined. Shopping haven If anyone is under any illusion that Dubai might be slowing down, think again. Instead of being cautious after the free fall that is the 2008 financial crisis, Dubai is increasingly attracting more luxury

FASHION TOURISM shoppers from around the world. As it stands, a report by Bain & Company shows that Dubai alone accounts for 30 per cent of the luxury market in the Middle East, and 60 per cent of its domestic market. In fact, Dubai Mall, the world’s largest mall, accounts for around half of luxury purchases made in Dubai. “The Middle East is growing at a steady pace, with Dubai continuing as the centre of gravity and the only city attracting foreign luxury consumers, such as Russians, Indians and Africans,” the report said. So what makes Dubai such a conducive, even special, place for luxury shopping? The answer lies in favourable factors both from the consumer and retailer. Retail royalty Dubai’s retail industry has been one of the fastest growing and has become one of the world’s most desirable environments for investment and revenue generation. The ever escalating progress of its public and private sector are expected to further boost retail industry Over the long term, Bain estimated that the global luxury goods market in 2025 will likely be more than five times larger than it stood in 1995.“Middle East is growing at a steady pace, with Dubai continuing as the centre of gravity and the only city attracting foreign luxury consumers, such as Russians, Indians and Africans,” the report said. Cyrille Fabre, Bain & Company partner who leads the retail and consumer products practice for the Middle East, said “The Middle East is now the tenth largest luxury goods market with sales exceeding USD7.69 billion. Kapoor believes that from a retail industry point of view, Dubai’s success can be attributed to strong leadership from established local groups who invested in the development of high-end luxury retail and attracted most of the world’s top brands to establish presence in the region.“A quick look at the shopping mall

83

FASHION TOURISM

evolution proves this very point: from Wafi and Burjuman malls, to the Mall of Emirates and most recently Dubai Mall, there has been continuous investment in this space, with a significant allocation to luxury shopping. On the consumer side, the region has had a long affinity with luxury given the demand for high end products, as well as Dubai establishing itself as a regional trading hub.” With such a quick rate of progress in recent times, can luxury shopping in Dubai keep up and change accordingly as well? Kapoor certainly thinks so.“There’s higher segmentation as the luxury market continues to grow with department stores like Bloomingdales and Galleries Lafayette, the Shoe District at Dubai Mall. The top

Hermès watches have been in the Middle East since about 15 years through wholesalers. About 10 years ago we started selling our timepieces at our Hermès stores in the region. The Hermès watch business in the Middle East is growing very fast at a rate of about 60 per cent. Hermès is perceived as a House of high quality and craftsmanship. It is becoming an important, well-respected and distinctive actor on the Swiss prestige watchmaking scene, in harmony with the Brand values. We will continue to increase our visibility and have the intention to open watch dedicated stores in the region.

10 luxury brands continue to gain market share and as a result increase their retail space. In addition to high-end luxury brands, we’ve seen several prominent contemporary designer brands establishing presence here, such as Tory Burch or Kate Spade.” One example of the confidence of retailers in Dubai is the expansion of Dubai Mall. Upon completion of the project, a further 100 stores will be added and visitor numbers are forecast to reach 100 million. CEO of Emaar explained that the demand for extra retail space has been driven by luxury retailers, with sales up 15 per cent in August and expectations of USD4 billion of sales revenue by the end of 2013. Just to have an idea of the prestige that Dubai Mall offers, Victoria’s Secret store there is the second biggest-selling worldwide while Chanel, Cartier and LVMH run flagship stores with their third-largest sales revenue in the world. Consumer paradise Then there are the consumers. Dubai is made up largely of an expatriate population, many of whom seek the lucrative tax-free packages that it offers. Couple that with high aspirations of acquiring high-end luxury goods and you get a melting pot of never-ending demand for quality products. A past survey showed that almost 100 per cent of Western expatriates admit to spending part of their income on ‘luxurious lifestyle choices’. This is in stark contrast to other popular expat

FASHION TOURISM destinations such as Singapore (49 per cent) and Hong Kong (53 per cent). “Luxury has become more understated and customers are looking for quality and highvalue objects from brands endowed with a heritage, genuine craftsmanship skills and unique creativity,” remarks La Montre Hermès CEO, Luc Perramond.“Customers are looking more and more for exceptional pieces showcasing high craftsmanship and very special techniques such as enameling, engraving, straw marquetry which makes a watch very unique and singular.” Now, when you add the millions of tourists into the shopping equation, especially during the enticing sale periods, it’s no wonder why Dubai’s luxury shopping scene is the way it is right now. “Traditionally the UAE has manifested an affinity for hard luxury such as watches and jewellery, as well as perfumes and cosmetics. Lately apparel and accessories are leading the growth,” says Kapoor. This point was something which was agreed by Claudia D’Arpizio, a Bain partner in Milan and lead author of the abovementioned study, when she said,“We are entering a new phase in the evolution of the luxury market, more markets, more segments, and more diversity of tastes all combine to create more variables to solve for when pursuing the right strategy for growth.” But it’s not all about spending freely. For some whose aspirations are a little out of reach, there is still the used luxury market

to navigate through. And it is a continually booming business.“In Hong Kong which is a comparable market in size with the UAE, the pre-owned luxury handbags market is worth over USD70 million,” comments Kapoor.“In the UAE the pre-owned luxury is still a new category, mostly because until recently there hasn’t been a convenient and secure way to make it possible to buy pre owned items with the assurance of quality and authenticity. However, as the overall luxury retail landscape changes, so are the opportunities and the offerings in this category. The performance of our business since inception has been indicative of great potential.” What does Dubai need to do to progress further in its pursuit of shopping excellence? “It’s a buoyant market that will continue to grow in size and expand its breadth of offering and services. Offering an exciting and sophisticated shopping scene is part of UAE’s strategy of cementing its reputation as a touristic paradise, along with many other attractions, fine dining and quality hotels. While continuing to bring in new and exciting brands and concepts to the region, the UAE is also supporting the emergence of local designer and brands, which is an essential part of the shopping experience. With the mechanisms and infrastructure all in place, will Dubai’s luxury shopping industry remain this way for a long time to come? “It should remain one of the favourite destination for luxury shopping for tourists and also for local customers thanks

UAE has a fast growing luxury market (which has been growing double digits every year); and we’ve witnessed a rapid rise and adoption of e-commerce over the past 2-3 years. These are some of the factors that have led to the success of our business. Plus our proposition is relevant for both buyers and sellers.

to a well established distribution network,” predicts Perramond, but reiterating the fact that Dubai faces stiff competition from the other cities which have not only reached, but maintained their shopping status.“Asia was one of the fastest growing markets these last years. The US market has been also growing strongly. The UAE would compete with Russia, India and Brazil showing a very deep interest in luxury products today.” “Several cities around the globe have built a reputation for being luxury shopping destinations in the last decade: Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, Buenos Aires; clearly luxury is not just about the traditional US and European destinations,” echoes Kapoor. “Uniqueness and diversity are important in the luxury market.”

Making The Most of

Online shopping

86

feature

From Louis Vuitton to Prada, these days, many women around the world are purchasing designer handbags, shoes and clothes at the click of a mouse. And the fact is that online shopping has not only made life easier but is more convenient. Yet as Saadiya Ahmad discovers, there are some tips that help you acquire the best of the designer goods and make sure you get the most of what you desire. 87

feature

The Pros Online shopping has definitely changed how people would normally shop for goods. For most of us who are time deficient, just some of the pros of online shopping include not having to drive to the mall or get stuck in traffic just to purchase a dress or handbag. The most significant advantage of shopping online is the fact that the business transaction can be done 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This makes it possible for people to shop any time they want at the convenience of their own place and time. Be Aware When purchasing designer goods online, it is paramount to undertake precautions; firstly, be sure to only shop and purchase from reputable sites or the actual designer’s official and authorised dealers to guarantee what you are purchasing is genuine. In short, you need to educate yourself on the sites that are real, authentic and officially authorised when buying designer goods online. Also be aware of the website’s exchange and return policy. If you can’t have the guarantee of returning goods to your satisfaction,

88

then don’t click the ‘Add to cart’ button. Also a red flag to look out for is the price. A department store website may sell authentic designer handbags online at discount prices which may be at 10 per cent, 20 per cent or even 30 per cent off but will never go beyond 50 percent or more. The bottom line is, if you find your favourite handbag online that claimed to be authentic and selling for a fraction of the retail cost then stop wasting your time and money on it because you will not get the real thing for a fraction of the price. Most authentic designers such as Coach, Dooney & Bourke, Isabella Fiore, Burberry and Michael Kors will have a discount on their products at authorised retailers or department stores but few designers such as Louis Vuitton, Gucci or Chanel may have their products on sale. Another tip is to be savvy when it comes to a particular detailing used by a designer – hunt for patterns that match the manufacturers’ known patterns – Bottega’s woven leather, Coach’s symmetrical lines, and Chanel’s quilted stitching, among other things. Essentially being cautious and having proper designer education, and savvy shopping skills will make buying

feature designer goods on the internet an exciting experience for fashionistas. Advice To receive updates on the hottest and newest deals delivered to directly to your email inbox, it is advisable to sign up for online newsletters put forth by the particular website. This way you can even avail exclusive discounts and offers. Also log on and search for other online shops so you can compare prices on different products available and in turn, get the best deals. Also be sure to only transact business with trusted and legitimate online sellers. Also take note of the different modes of payment available; only trust those with secure payment modes such as PayPal. Handbags We all want that coveted ‘IT’ bag of the season. However, when purchasing a handbag online there are a few precautions to take. Firstly, know the location where the bags originated from; for instance never buy authentic handbags that are supposed to be made in Italy or France from China. Most websites these days claim to be selling authentic handbags but beware of the place they are shipping the products from. Look at the ‘contact us’ link to see where the company is located. Also be sure to read the ‘About Us’ page to see how long the company has been in the business and if it has a physical address location and not a PO Box address. Also be sure that there is an Authenticity Guarantee or your money back clause mentioned somewhere on the website. Furthermore, there are many great guides online that teach you how to spot counterfeit designer handbags. If you find that your bag is counterfeit upon arrival (some designer handbag stores will actually authenticate a bag for free), then you can easily return the bag. When in doubt, send an email to initiate contact with the sellers and see how well they respond to your questions. You should not be afraid to question the authenticity of the products. After all, it is your money, invest wisely and buy only authentic handbags that will last for years to come.

Second, you will need to compare pictures and examine the important points in the genuine article and look when placed against the image in the exact location. Use a zoom feature, the item description and then your sharp eyes for the purpose. Look at the small type. Beware of words like ‘authentic’, ‘genuine’, ‘best value’, ‘bargain price’ and even ‘inspired by designer X’, mostly this means you are dealing with a replica.

Timepieces While men have been traditionally purchasing luxury timepieces for themselves, women are not far behind and are also buying expensive highly technical yet beautiful watches that add panache and style to any outfit. Saadiya Ahmad explains the key features to be on the look-out for when purchasing your luxury watch.

Unique Compared to men’s watches, ladies watches have traditionally been endowed with delicate, smaller dials than their male counterparts yet with some designs taking a bigger approach as well as paying more attention to subtle and intricate detailing and elaborate embellishment by way of gem stones. And today’s modern woman is on par with men in their knowledge and desire for truly complicated and highly technical timepieces. Ceramic is one metal that is a favourite for many women and provides a cutting edge

alternative to eternal favourites such as gold and steel. Gemstones of all kinds are also favoured with rubies, sapphires, and emeralds abound and of course, every girl’s best friend, diamonds. It is no wonder that this still gem remains the top choice for women today. Going beyond the extravagantly expensive embellishments are kitsch ornaments such as feathers and even straw which add an element of cool into ladies watches. What To Look For Before you shell out hard-earned cash

on your new watch, there are 10 very important aspects to look for before deciding whether or not to actually make that purchase. Some of these aspects include the following: The Purpose: When you are looking for a luxury watch, ask yourself why you want it in the first place. Is it simply a functional tool to tell time or is it serving the role of enhancing your professional image in the office? Or perhaps this is going to be jewellery watch that is worn on special occasions? Consider the band

feature style, materials, case style, decorations, movement type and brand when comparing luxury watches and be sure that it fits the purpose for which you are buying it to begin with.

that unique sparkle to suits and dressy clothes. However it is paramount that if you are purchasing a watch with gemstones that these are certified and authenticated by a certificate.

Price: The price tag for a luxury watch is extremely varied and can range from a few thousand dirhams to even a few hundred thousand dirhams and upwards. Decide on a price range before you start shopping and then investigate the options in that range; this will help you decide which combination of features, sense of luxuriousness and brand name your new timepiece should have.

Watch functions: For watch aficionados, the interior mechanics of a watch is what distinguishes it from others and determines its value. People who appreciate the skill of watch-making generally want manual-wind or automatic mechanical movements in their timepieces. In fact, the most elite of luxury watches usually have a mechanical movement as well as other intricate complications that have been developed throughout the history of watch-making. A complication is any function other than basic timekeeping, such as the stopwatch on a chronograph. Complications demonstrate the skill and prestige of watch companies, and the presence of handmade complications can significantly increase the price of a watch.

The Casings: Luxury watches are created using the finest materials available. For many people, a luxury watch means it should be crafted in the finest 18-karat yellow gold while for others, white gold represents understated elegance and red gold holds a more ‘blingy’ appeal. Luxury watches, especially those designed with multiple functions, are also available as well-made stainless steel timepieces. Watch straps are often crafted in hand stitched, high quality crocodile or leather or else can be a bracelet made of the same metal as the watch. The Bling: From diamonds to sapphires and rubies, there is no limit to your imagination with luxury watches. The exquisiteness of jewellery watches adds

Solid Metal: Steel watches should be made from grade 316L stainless steel almost all the time. Plus, the watch case and bracelet links should be solid pieces of metal rather than folder metal or anything hollow. The Movement: This is essentially the heart of your watch and what powers the watch. Switzerland is known for making the highest quality watch movements and

most come from ETA. Be sure your watch is completely powered by an authentic Swiss movement and has a document that guarantees this. Crafted By Watchmakers: Purely fashion watches look fun and playful however a real luxury timepiece is an investment as well as being arm candy and should ideally be purchased from a highly reputed watch-making brand. The best watches are designed using fundamental watch design principles that value function as well as form. Be sure to examine the dial and all its features figuring out what each and every function does; some well known and highly expert watch-making brands include Omega, Rolex, Patek Phillipe and A. Lange and Sohne, to name a few. Weight: Weight often signifies solid construction using high quality steel. So feel the weight of a case and bracelet to make sure it is substantial enough to justify your investment. On more expensive watches you start to see materials such as titanium which are lighter than steel, but in this price segment, weight is often times a sign of quality. Insignia: A luxury watch is typically labelled in at least four places, namely on the face of the watch, the case back, on the crown, and on the deployment clasp or strap buckle. The manner of signing can vary, but at this price level, it is usually some type of light-laser engraving.

Art of the month Passages//Toroq by Sherin Guirguis The Third Line will present Sherin Guirguis’ first solo show in the region. Guirguis investigates post-colonial themes of political, cultural and social dogma and feminist activism within the framework of the Egyptian diaspora, both in the public and private spheres. Delving deep into the building blocks of culture and identity, specifically from the approach of a diaspora artist, she presents her interpretation of what it means to be defined by the transformative events of the moment. Three large-scale kinetic sculptures from the first series are inspired by Nobel Laureate Naguib Mahfouz’s Cairo Trilogy, which maps the cultural evolution/revolution in Egypt and the breakdown and reconstruction of post-

colonial Egypt. Fabricated in the shape of traditional Arabic jewellery, and constructed from materials similar to harem mashrabeyas, these decorative pieces and their rocking movements reference a woman’s body as she walks down a public street. The second series is centered on paintings that explore transitional spaces from historically relevant locations in Egyptian feminism – more specifically the life of Huda Shaarawi, a pioneer Egyptian feminist leader and nationalist, and the birth of the Egyptian Women’s Union.

Al Ydar is divided into two sections, representing two sides of Dubai – the heart and soul. The first section symbolises the heart through an illustration of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s poetry – ‘Determination of the Youth’, depicting images of the camel, which is the ship of the desert, and the mighty falcon, which is the national bird of UAE. The second section continues onwards under the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, taking the viewer into modern-day Dubai with a collage of imagery depicting our nations growth and success such as the Dubai skyline, a vision towards the future and the Arabian horse, which represents more than strength; it epitomises a constellation of noble values shared by community members as well: grace, endurance, friendship and gallantry.

Soshana Forever Art Couture features a solo exhibition titled ‘SOSHANA FOREVER’ by one of the few Austrian painters of the 20th century to have aroused international interest. Soshana just turned 86 this year. She has been painting for over 60 years and has known and worked amongst the artistic and intellectual avant-garde in Paris and New York. From the figurative Social Realism of her early years, she found her own stylistic form of Abstract Art. Reduced calligraphic graphics as well as flamboyant, vibrant paintings are among her many works. Soshana is a thoughtful painter a seeker in many respects. Her enormous oeuvre attests to a life filled with upheavals and new beginnings. Her pictorial language expresses her inner experiences and her deep humanity. Since the 1950’s, Soshana’s works have been presented in exhibitions, at museums and galleries all over the world. They have been purchased for many public and private collections. In the late 1980’s Soshana returned to Vienna where she presently resides and continues to paint.

STATUE OF

Limitation

Nazgol Ansarinia, NSS book series, 2008, detail

From November 18, 2013 to January 4, 2014, Green Art Gallery Dubai will feature ‘Statue of Limitation’, presenting works by Nazgol Ansarinia, Holger Niehaus, Judith Sönnicken and Alessandro Balteo Yazbeck with Media Farzin. ‘Statute of limitations’ is a legal term, describing the time frame during which affected parties can take action to seek justice after injury or damage. In the face of such systemic violence, this exhibition offers a statue of limitations: an anti-monument to human will, with all its limitations. Ansarinia’s work rebels against state logic

and bureaucracy. Her operations take up official documents (NSS Book Series), as well as quotidian objects (Mendings), which become host to human anxieties and uneasiness about the times we live in. The subjects of Niehaus’s photographs are symbolic abstractions: a vanitas of oil and water, the motivations behind many a political and economical maneuver. Sönnicken’s anti-monuments suggest the recurrence of uneasy events while Yazbeck and Farzin take a 1950s-era US television program about current politics as the source material of their video.
