Back to School Tour Registers College Students as Donors

About 2,200 University of Illinois students registered as organ and tissue donors at the University’s 2013 Quad Day event held on the Urbana-Champaign campus on August 25, equaling last year’s Guinness World Record-setting total. Gift of Hope aims to replicate that success at other donor registration drives being held on college campuses across Illinois as the new school year begins.

As college students across Illinois and northwest Indiana register for school-sponsored clubs, activities and organizations at the start of the new school year, Gift of Hope is hoping many of them also will choose to register as organ and tissue donors.

That’s the goal of Gift of Hope’s Back to School Tour, an ambitious series of donor registration drives scheduled at more than a dozen Illinois college and university campuses in August and September to coincide with the start of the fall term. Last August, Gift of Hope set a new Guinness World Record for organ donor registrations by registering more than 2,200 students, faculty and alumni at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The organization is applying the lessons learned through that experience as it seeks to register even more donors by expanding its collegefocused donation registration drives to other Illinois schools.

“We won’t be going after another Guinness World Record this year, but we’re still amped to get the word out about donation to college students and encourage them to register as organ and tissue donors,” said Josh Muller, Gift of Hope’s Public Relations/Marketing Coordinator who is managing the Back to School Tour. “We know there are many students at schools in Illinois who are aware of organ and tissue donation and support it, but have yet to register as donors.

We plan to make it easy for them to do so by bringing registration to them.”

The Back to School Tour is traversing the length and breadth of Gift of Hope’s service area to spread the word about organ and tissue donation on college campuses and get students to register as lifesaving donors. So far, it appears the word is being heard. Nearly 5,000 students have registered to be donors at the tour stops made to date.

Gift of Hope Presents Community Leaders with Heroes for Hope Awards

Juan Carlos Caicedo, MD, Director of the Hispanic Transplant Program at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital, was one of nine recipients of Gift of Hope’s Real-Life Lifesavers Award. Kevin Cmunt, President/CEO of Gift of Hope, and Raiza Mendoza, Hispanic Public Relations and Community Outreach Coordinator, presented the award to Dr. Caicedo.

Gift of Hope capped National Minority Donor Awareness Week (August 1-7) this year a little differently than in the past by recognizing professionals and families who have made saving and improving the lives of others a lifelong commitment.

While working to help raise public awareness of the need for registered organ and tissue donors from minority communities, Gift of Hope took the opportunity to recognize people who make significant contributions to their communities — often anonymously — by presenting them with Heroes for Hope: Real-Life Lifesavers awards at a special ceremony in Chicago.

“Everyday heroes are seldom recognized for their important contributions,” said Kevin Cmunt, President/CEO of Gift of Hope. “Our Real-Life Lifesavers Award honors many of these people who, like us, are committed to saving and improving the lives of the people in our communities.”

The ceremony was attended by many city and local officials, including Carlos Martín Jiménez, General Consul of Mexico in Chicago, and Ill. State Rep. Luis Arroyo. Honorees included: • Juan Carlos Caicedo, MD, Director of the Hispanic Transplant Program at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

• Sgt. Juan Clas, a member of the Chicago Police Department’s Community Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) program.

• Belitza Contreras, a Latino family conflict resolution consultant.

“We are honored to recognize these heroes who sometimes remain unacknowledged, but whose actions have an invaluable impact on our community,” said Raiza Mendoza, Hispanic Public Relations and Community Outreach Coordinator for Gift of Hope. “They are our true superheroes.”

Two families also received special recognition for their contribution to saving lives through donation. One was the family of Luis Ángel Pérez, 18, who died from a gang-related shooting. Cetila Portugal, Perez’s mother, proudly spreads the message that her troubled son became a hero who saved six lives as a donor. The other was the Arias family, who lost their five-year-old daughter, Brianna, in a car accident in 2002. The tragedy moved the family to create a community-based soccer organization in her memory to help children in need. Gift of Hope presented each family with a Donate Life flag as a special acknowledgment.

Morgan Sizzles on 2013 Summer Tour

Gift of Hope’s lovable liver, Morgan D’Organ, has been piling up the miles over the last two months, traversing the highways and byways of Illinois and northwest Indiana on his annual Summer Tour to promote organ and tissue donation and donor registration.

During his many summer stops, he’s tasted the “best of the best” at Naperville’s ginormous Ribfest, hit the campus scene at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and sashayed through Chicago to sample salsa at Fiesta del Sol, walk the donation walk at the Bud Billiken Parade and march through

the marketplace at Northalsted Market Days. Yet to come? A scary stop at the Scarecrow Festival in St. Charles in October.

It’s not all fun and games and slurping sauce off those dirigible-size digits for Morgan. He’s always on a mission to build awareness of donation and encourage people to register as lifesaving donors. Morgan’s mantra? “I’m all about donor registration drives, high fives and saving lives.” You can see where Morgan’s been and where he’s headed on Gift of Hope’s Facebook page.

State Officials, Volunteers Observe National Minority Donor Awareness Week Gift of Hope President/CEO Kevin Cmunt and Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White kicked off the 17th annual observance of National Minority Donor Awareness Week on August 1 by hosting Wave Away the Waiting at the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago.

At the event, 300 volunteers were on hand to represent the 300 people who die each year in Illinois waiting for an organ transplant, more than half of whom are minorities.

National Minority Donor Awareness Week is a nationwide observance that aims to educate minorities of the critical need for organ, eye and tissue donors within multicultural communities. It encourages people from all racial and ethnic groups to become donors by registering in their state donor registries and draws special attention to minorities, who make up the majority of the nearly 120,000 men, women and children on the national organ transplant waiting list. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and Gift of Hope President /CEO Kevin Cmunt joined 300 volunteers in urging people from multicultural communities in Illinois to Wave Away the Waiting for organ transplants by registering as organ, eye and tissue donors.

Donate Life Race Car Headed to Chicago NASCAR driver Joey Gase is putting his pedal to the metal to raise public awareness of organ and tissue donation and will make a September stop at Chicagoland Speedway to promote the lifesaving cause.

Gase, 20, displays the Donate Life logo on his No. 52 NASCAR Nationwide Series car to honor the memory of his mother, Mary Jo, an organ and tissue donor, and spread the word about the need for registered donors. An aneurysm took Mary Jo Gase’s life in April 2011 and, her son, at age 18, chose to donate his mother’s organs and tissue to give hope and life to others.

He knew it was what she would have wanted.

“My mom always loved helping people,” Gase said in a recent television interview. “She always had a big heart, and she was always helping people when she could. We knew if she could help all these people, if she could no longer continue her life, this is what she would want to do.”

To date, Mary Jo Gase’s gifts have helped more than 60 people live or improve their lives. “We know she is still living on now through other people,” Gase said. “I think it’s amazing what an impact she’s still making in people’s lives, and she’s not even here with us anymore. Except through them.”

Donate Life America is sponsoring NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Joey Gase to help raise public awareness of organ and tissue donation and the need for registered donors. Gase will race his No. 52 Donate Life car on September 14 at Chicagoland Speedway.

This year, Donate Life America is sponsoring Gase’s car to support his efforts to place donation top-of-mind among race enthusiasts and others who see his car going 200+ miles per hour around a track. In addition to the Donate Life logo, his car has a picture of a donor on it as well as the Web address of the organ procurement organization serving the area where he’s circling the track.

Gase will race in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Dollar General 300 on September 14 at Chicagoland Speedway.

New Springfield Facility Will Enhance Services Gift of Hope is building a new facility in Springfield to enhance its ability to serve referring hospitals, coroners, medical examiners and other key customers in central Illinois and to strengthen its professional presence in the area.

The floor plan for the new facility has been approved, and work is now beginning on infrastructure elements and obtaining the necessary permits from the City of Springfield to begin construction.

Why the need for a new building? “We’ve outgrown our current location, and it’s time for us to have a place that’s big enough to invite in the people and organizations served by our organization, as well as our volunteers and staff members,” said Roy Mayfield, Gift of Hope’s Springfield-based Supervisor of Tissue Recovery Services and Funeral/Forensic Services.

A key feature of the new, 10,000-square-foot, all-brick building will be a large community room with a state-of-the-art telecommunications setup that will give Gift of Hope a place to hold donation-related seminars, public education programs and other training sessions for professionals and volunteers.

“We envision giving coroners, funeral directors, hospital staff, the community, members of the Secretary of State’s staff and our Advocates for Hope volunteers a convenient and comfortable place to learn about organ and tissue donation,” Mayfield

Gift of Hope has outgrown its existing office space in Springfield.

The new, freestanding building will be located just east of the current office and will open its doors in spring 2014. said. “With the sophisticated telecommunications arrangement we’re building into the new structure, people will be able to participate in training sessions from remote locations, adding convenience and reducing travel-related costs.”

Gift of Hope expects to break ground on the new structure by November 1 and complete the project by spring 2014. It will be built on an open plot of land located just east of Gift of Hope’s existing office space on Denver Drive in Springfield.

Stroger Hospital Cooks Up Batch of Hope Stroger Hospital of Cook County is leading the charge in Cook County Health and Hospitals System’s efforts to encourage its staff members to register as lifesaving organ and tissue donors.

With Stroger as its catalyst, CCHHS has joined the ranks of more than 40 other Illinois and northwest Indiana hospitals and health systems that are taking part in Gift of Hope’s Hospitals for Hope campaign, an ongoing initiative designed to build awareness of organ and tissue donation within healthcare organizations and show the general public that trusted healthcare professionals support donation.

“Our network of facilities operates as the safety net for healthcare in Chicago and suburban Cook County,” said Annette Carney, Public Relations/Community Affairs Coordinator at Stroger Hospital.

“By participating in the Hospitals for Hope campaign, we are extending the reach of that safety net by encouraging our staff members to help people in need of lifesaving transplants by registering as organ and tissue donors.”

While many Hospitals for Hope campaign participants have set a limited period for their involvement in the campaign, Stroger and the CCHHS system will participate through the end of 2013 and into 2014.

The system has set a goal of 250 new donor registrations.

Memory Makers Keepsake Boxes Built with Love and Care

Each memory box contains an information packet about Gift of Hope and organ and tissue donation, a specially designed medallion, a card with a touching donation-related poem, donor family and Donate Life lapel pins, and Donate Life wristbands. Donor family members are encouraged to personalize the boxes by adding their own mementos and keepsakes.

About once a month, Jackie Foucre battles Chicago’s weekday evening rush-hour traffic to trek from her job in north suburban Riverwoods, Ill., to Gift of Hope’s office in Itasca, Ill., for an evening of volunteer work. Lisa Richardson does the same, coming from the opposite direction via her workplace in west suburban Naperville, Ill. The two meet on common ground, which is only fitting because they share a common experience. They are donor family members, part of a special group of people whose family members or loved ones have given the precious gift of life through organ and tissue donation.

The volunteer work Foucre and Richardson do at their monthly gatherings is special, too. They meet to assemble memory boxes that Gift of Hope provides to other donor family members like them. Each small green box contains an information packet about Gift of Hope and organ and tissue donation, a specially designed medallion, a card with a

Gift of Hope has assembled and distributed about 1,400 memory boxes since starting the program in 2011. Foucre and Richardson have built about one-third of them. Before the program, Gift of Hope shared information with donor families in a folder or mailed items to them. Those methods were adequate, but Schmitz wanted to humanize things a bit more.

“We saw the need to create a compassionate and cohesive way to connect with our donor families,” she said. “We developed the memory boxes with that thought in mind.

They allow us to share with donor families and for them to share with their loved ones. They help donor families make tangible the often intangible gift of hope people offer through donation.”

The inside flaps of the box have die-cut ovals where donor families can place pictures of their loved ones. Donor family members are encouraged to personalize the boxes by adding their own mementos and keepsakes to remind them of the richness their loved ones brought to their lives.

“Our memory boxes are designed to be shared with donor families at the hospital during the discussion about their loved one’s donation,” explained Diane Schmitz, Gift of Hope’s Donor Family Services Coordinator. “The purpose is to offer people information about our organization, the donation process and the aftercare services we offer to our donor families. More importantly, each memory box is a tangible gift that allows donor families to memorialize their loved ones through personal items and other mementos that have special meaning for them. Some families may include items like photos of their loved one, a wisp of their loved one’s hair, their handprints or a memorial card from services.”

Gift of Hope will soon unveil a new donor medallion that donor families will receive as a keepsake for placement on a cemetery or memorial marker or in another special place. The donor is represented by the left hand offering hope to the recipient’s outstretched hand on the right. The heart represents strength, love and the connection of donation.

The fact that donor family members offer love and care to other donor family members by assembling memory boxes is a novel aspect of the program, Schmitz added. “The gift of hope offered through donation is extraordinary. We are blessed to have dedicated Advocates for Hope volunteers who are donor family members themselves create these keepsake boxes. Lisa and Jackie understand the impact their loved ones had on others through donation, so to be a part of this for other families is remarkable. The human touch that fills each memory box before a donor family receives it is an important component of the project.”

The boxes also make a significant impact on the two people who assemble them. “This volunteer work is special and calming to me,” said Foucre, who lost her boyfriend, Adam Schatz, in a kart-racing accident in Wisconsin in 2008. Schatz

gave life to three people as an organ donor and has improved the lives of many others through his tissue gifts.

“I do it because I know it will help donor families with their grieving process and will give them a place to keep mementos of their loved ones. The boxes remind donor families that their loved ones haven’t been forgotten and that their donation is truly appreciated. And assembling them is also my small way of saying to Adam, ‘Hey, I still think about you, and I do this because of you and to keep you alive in my heart.’”

Assembling the boxes is special to Richardson because she knows what it feels like to receive one. She lost her seven-year-old son, Dylan, in a car accident in 2007.

Like Schatz, “Deeder” gave life to three people as an organ donor. Gift of Hope gave Richardson and her husband, Dan, a memory box after she got involved in the assembly work. She keeps it within arm’s reach on her bedroom nightstand shelf.

The Richardsons have personalized their memory box with several pictures of Dylan at different ages, a Spiderman (Dylan’s favorite superhero) pin, some SpongeBob SquarePants stickers and a beaded bracelet that Dylan made for his mother at summer camp one year. The box

also holds pictures and notes from people who have lost children who became donors.

Richardson believes the memory boxes give donor families comfort in knowing that someone else has experienced what they are experiencing and that they are not alone.

She gets a sense of comfort, too. “I don’t know who they are, what loved one they lost or how they lost their loved one, but it gives me comfort knowing that I assembled these boxes because I know what the people who receive them are going through. It’s a very deep, loving feeling.”

She and Foucre believe donor families will get a similar feeling knowing the memory boxes they received were assembled by other donor family members. “When I’m putting them together, I make sure that each one is assembled with love and care,” said Foucre. “If a piece of paper is crinkled, I’ll toss it and use a new one. I want the box to be perfect for the family members receiving it.”

That’s the way family treats family, she added. “Donor families are a family among themselves. Through the work I do assembling memory boxes, I feel like I’m providing care and compassion to a member of my extended family.”

Gift of Hope Establishes Grant Program for Donation Research Gift of Hope has established a grant program to sponsor physician fellows interested in pursuing research on organ and tissue donation topics. Through the organization’s 2013 Research Award Program, physicians who are actively training in a neuroscience, critical care or transplantation fellowship program can receive grants of up to $30,000 a year to support their research.

“The fields of organ and tissue donation and transplantation offer physician fellows opportunities to advance the existing knowledge base in these areas and to make a significant impact on our ability to make more organs and tissue available to people in need,” said Martin Jendrisak, MD, Medical Director of Gift of Hope. “We encourage physicians to take advantage of this opportunity.”

Gift of Hope is accepting grant proposals in three project areas: • Advancing care of patients with severe acute brain injury • Enhancing organ utilization • Safeguarding the donation option Since establishing the grant program in April, Gift of Hope has funded two proposals received from physician fellows.

In one, Felicitas Koller, MD, a transplant surgery fellow at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, is testing whether colonization or infection of deceased organ donors with multi-drug resistant organisms (MDRO) results in higher rates of post-transplant infections and, thereby, adversely affects outcomes.

To conduct her study, Dr. Koller is linking clinical data from three databases: Gift of Hope’s data warehouse, Northwestern Medicine’s data warehouse and aggregated national registry data from the United Network for Organ Sharing, the United States Renal Data System and the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.

Database linkage will help to identify associations between unique donor

Physician fellows can receive grants of $30,000 to conduct research projects on donation and transplantation topics through Gift of Hope’s 2013 Research Award Program. characteristics and transplant recipient outcomes. Secondary data analysis will be performed to determine the prevalence of donor MDRO through donor medical record audits and culture reports.

“Infectious complications are of exceeding importance to safety and success in organ transplantation today,” Dr. Jendrisak said.

“This study may provide new donor management information as well as demonstrate the importance of inter-institutional database linkages.”

In the second grant project, John Cull, MD, a critical care fellow at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, is surveying medical professionals’ attitudes toward organ donation with the goal of identifying known and unknown biases that may be barriers to organ donation in patients.

“Unfortunately, personal biases and prejudices can come into play when treating patients, and many of them are unknown to the practitioners themselves,” Dr. Jendrisak said. “Medical professionals are often the gateway to transplantation, so knowing their attitudes toward transplantation is very important because they are the ones who must refer potential donors to Gift of Hope in a timely manner as a vital first step in the donation process.”

Grant proposals will be accepted, reviewed and evaluated by Gift of Hope’s Scientific Advisory Committee through June 30, 2014. The Committee will base its evaluations and funding decisions on: • The significance of the proposed research: whether the information gleaned from the study will be relevant to the field, represent novel research or have apparent applications.

• If the grant will be used for seed money, whether it will allow the investigator to be more competitive in generating external research funding.

• The clarity of the proposal’s rationale and ideas.

• The focus of the hypothesis, objectives and experimental approach.

• Whether the project’s timeframe is realistic.

• The applicant’s technical ability and track record in applying for grants.

Donation Authorization Rate The rate at which authorization for donation is obtained, expressed as a percentage.
