OPERATIONAL RESILIENCE Map, Monitor and Model your Entire Supply Chain
ARE YOU RESILIENT?
Last year’s disruptions opened everyone’s eyes to potential risks and threats to their supply chain and business relationships: COVID, SolarWinds, China tech and trade wars, regulatory compliance, ESG-based ethics in resourcing and labour, and more. In addition to operational pressures from these converging hazards, business leaders are frustrated at being stuck in a backwardlooking approach to managing supply chain risk for operational resilience: having people manually comb through databases and directories for months to make snapshot spreadsheets and surveys with dated, incomplete information. At Interos, we saw a smarter way towards a better future. Our Interos Operational Resilience Cloud maps your entire business ecosystem in seconds, using artificial intelligence to get smarter every day. This helps you precisely detect vulnerability and distress across digital and physical supply chains in time to prevent disruptions and achieve dramatically superior enterprise adaptability and responsiveness. 22

INVENTORY CHALLENGES WITH REAL-TIME SHIPMENT TRANSPARENCY
T
he year of 2020 brought unprecedented pressures and challenges to global supply chains. However, these obstacles, including inventory disruptions and airport-closing climate events, are still painfully abundant. They are the new normal, with regular shipment delays across nearly every supply chain for the first time in modern memory. Mounting supply chain pressures reflect the severe pandemic-driven shifts in shopping habits. Consumers are reallocating more funds previously spent on outside entertainment towards record-breaking apparel imports, personal electronics, and furniture purchases—spinning abruptly away from standard trade patterns and time frames. More supply chain leaders want to increase transparency across product shipments to respond strategically and stop reacting. In its ongoing mission to help supply chain leaders discover a smarter path to customers, Apex Logistics is empowering businesses to make significant agility gains by streamlining previously manual processes with robust automation capabilities. Last month alone, Apex scanned over 7,000 HAWBs into Air Import Gateway warehouse locations. "That racks up into huge time 50
September 2021
savings," explains Amanda Nazareno, senior product manager at Apex. "Every scan represents inventory that we placed into our warehouse automatically without keying any manual shipment into the system." The Apex system generated over 1,600 Permit to Transfers in the last month alone to ensure cargo recovery without any issues from airlines. Apex is continually working to help supply chain leaders discover greater resilience with deeper visibility across shipments and time-saving technologies. "Last month, we rolled out consumer invoice data automation for one of our clients with high-value product inventory and razor-thin transit times. Now, their system automatically feeds commercial invoice data into ours—converting it into documents without adding any extra steps. Since the mid-August launch, they've averaged thirty of these digitallycreated documents a day via automation," Nazareno says. Documents are instantly loaded into the Apex system for operations team members to view—saving hours in exporting and adding manual email attachments and document uploads.
APEX LOGISTICS
Apex Logistics International Inc. 2021
"Another air client was allocating half an FTE just to pinning down freight locations. Working with Apex to solve inventory challenges has reduced their "where-is-my-freight" communications down to almost zero. These communications used to take up about half of the working bandwidth of a mid-level logistics analyst." The same business has been countering obstacles with a deeper view into inventory disruption—specifically amidst recent catastrophic climate events and Covid-related airport closures. Another organisation turning to Apex for real-time inventory visibility across highvolume shipments has eliminated the guesswork behind ETAs altogether. Apex transmits details across eight core shipment milestones so the client's team members can view their system's shipment location and status immediately without having to pause for a report. Since going live on August 11th, the client has hit the ground running fast with real-time analytics, receiving over 70,000 EDI messages.
Apex is increasing transparency across every leg of each shipment—with rigorous, realtime container activity insights. Harnessing EDI, throughout August, Apex sent clients over 12,000 container status milestones so team members could easily track every move—from in-gate at origin to returning empty containers at the terminal. Apex offers active, real-time data across shipments with an intuitive online portal to monitor key performance metrics, highlighting areas for improvement while boosting visibility and immediacy.

AN INTELLIGENT APPROACH TO MANAGING SUPPLY CHAIN RISKS Over the past couple of years procurement departments around the world have grown used to – and rather weary of – dealing with supply chain disruptions. WRITTEN BY: SIMON THOMPSON, SALES DIRECTOR
A
s if the pandemic was not enough, there have been floods, droughts, bush fires and other natural disasters, major transport network disruptions, most notably the Suez Canal blockage, and bottlenecks in key categories such as tin for canning factories and microchips for automotive manufacture. While it is true that procurement incident rooms and task forces have done an admirable job in dealing with these situations, it is clear that effective supply chain risk management (SCRM) is escaping the control of mere mortals. We cannot go on firefighting forever! In fact, there are at least seven categories of supply chain risk. Reputational risk is the possibility that a supplier will engage in activity (child labor, bribery, environmental pollution etc.) that negatively affects your brand. This has an immediate impact on stakeholder and public 52
September 2021
perception of your true commitment (or lack of it) to ESG. Natural disaster risk is the possibility that your supply chain is disrupted by a hurricane, earthquake or other natural hazard. In a world of globalisation and climate change, this type of risk is only increasing. Then there are supply chain man-made risks that your supply chain is disrupted by events caused by human action or negligence such as fires and explosions. I would also put the Suez Canal blockage under this category: it was an error of human judgement. Supply chain geopolitical risk is the possibility that your supply chain is disrupted by global political events. Not just highprofile events such as terrorism, wars and revolutions, but also international tensions leading, for example, to changes to the global trading environment.
JAGGAER
Financial risk includes events such as supplier bankruptcy and volatility in currency exchanges and commodity markets. Cyber risk is a growing menace. According to The Global Risks Report 2020 by the World Economic Forum, cyberattacks, data fraud or theft are among today’s top risks to corporations. And finally, we can add the pandemic risk. This deserves a category of its own as it does not fit neatly under natural disaster or manmade risk. It’s a combination of the two and has been the major challenge of the past two years. The great danger is that without adequate visibility over global supply chains (and not just first-tier suppliers, but the entire chain), in dealing with one risk you open yourself up to another. The procurement function must harness technology to assist with SCRM. First, to automate routine manual tasks, thereby giving supply chain managers more time to focus on strategic issues such as SCRM, and second, to provide broad and deep visibility over supply chains, including the ability to predict where the next major disruption will occur. For the latter, you need access to current, accurate and rich data on global supply chains and individual suppliers. You also need embedded intelligence in your supply
management software to provide predictive capabilities. An example is the OTD Predictor, launched by JAGGAER early in 2019, which predicts with incredible accuracy the likelihood that materials and components will be delivered on time. Finally, the prescriptive analytics capabilities that are already at an advanced stage of development will recommend courses of action to eliminate or mitigate risk. These technologies – among others on the path to autonomous procurement – are no longer in the realm of science fiction. Given global uncertainties and competitive pressures, it is no longer a case of whether you can afford to implement these technologies, but whether you can afford not to. I’ll be exploring this topic in more detail on Day 1 at Procurement & Supply Chain Live but in the meantime, take a read of our Practical Guide to Autonomous Procurement!

BUILT TO DELIVER How a railcar manufacturer created a hyperconnected supply chain to keep them and their suppliers on track to success
W
orking with hundreds of suppliers, this leading provider of railcar services and products was struggling to get the visibility they needed into available capacity to meet lead time demands on products with a 30 to 50-year lifecycle and a two to three-year backlog at any given time. Add to that the complexity of operating within a build-toorder manufacturing environment in which every freight railcar is configured to unique customer specifications, and the need for tight supplier collaboration becomes even more critical. But for years, this company struggled to align internal and external stakeholders around a single source of truth. Operations, supply chain, finance, were all doing their own planning independently. Frequent schedule changes combined with limited collaboration between planners and suppliers created a lack of transparency. Suppliers would get a 54

change order with limited time to prepare and respond. The railcar manufacturer’s planners would then make decisions with limited information, leading to delivery delays and inventory overages, which impacted the entire business. The company decided to shift focus more to connecting planning and execution as its business became more reliant on suppliers for subassemblies, which shifted scheduling and fulfillment requirements. Suppliers needed to become key partners in the planning process to avoid costly setbacks and prolonged delays. Thanks to Kinaxis® RapidResponse® the railcar manufacturer’s planners now have a single source of truth that’s shared with all their suppliers. They’re able to respond to order changes quickly and accurately.
