Four years ago a small band of out-of-home warriors started a movement. Their manifesto was simple – no deadline is too short, no idea is too big. Staying fast and flexible has seen them infiltrate the hearts and minds of the media industry, growing rapidly year on year. Today the band of warriors have become a force to be reckoned with.

YouTube

YouTube is a video-sharing website where you can upload and share video clips. It consists mostly of user-generated content, and includes anything from home videos to TV and film clips. Viewers most often want to be entertained, so it’s not the best place to showcase adverts for products, although there are ways to use this medium effectively for business. You could store videos on YouTube and display them on your website, if you want to have videos that sell. YouTube accepts most video file formats, which makes it easy to use with almost any video recording device.

People use Facebook to express themselves and connect with others. Because of this, Facebook is not the ideal place to sell products or services; however, it is the perfect place to gain visibility and attract people to your websites.

Business or personal A profile is a person’s personal space and is meant only for individuals. If you want to use Facebook for business you will need to first have an individual profile. Then you can add a page dedicated to your business on your profile.

1. Use your social networking tools at least once a week to keep them current and to prevent followers from dropping your profile.

Things you should know about Facebook

2. If you are new to social networking, initially choose two networks to concentrate on.

Facebook events is an application that allows you to promote an event or milestone. Each event gets its own page. You can also invite people to your event and collect an RSVP count.

3. Use a consistent username. This will make it easier for you to work with multiple user accounts and for people to find you, instead of someone with a similar name.

What is social media? 6

Social media refers to online technology that allows anyone with access to the internet to publish and share information. It is usually free and includes anything from social network pages to sites for sharing photos and video clips. Social media differs from traditional media in that it does not have a single broadcaster, but is disseminated though social interaction – often passed on from user to user virally by word of mouth (or via social networks). Although most social media were originally intended for private use, they can be used as effective business tools. Even Barack Obama Twitters!

BlackBerry Storm Product review

by Sheena

Price

It retails for around R9 000 in stores or comes with business contracts.

Last words

This phone is a little pricey to buy out of the box, but get it on contract and sign up for the unlimited internet access for an extra R60. It is well worth it. S

BMW Z4 Sleek

Facebook Windows Live™ Messenger Yahoo® Messenger Flickr™ Photo Uploader Vodafone SatNav

For the first time in the BMW roadster tradition, this model abandons the soft top in favour of a hydraulically operated hardtop. Although it is solid metal, the hardtop’s aluminium shell keeps it light. Its compact construction enables the hardtop to open and close automatically in 20 seconds. The roof elements come to rest in the roof compartment to give the car a sleek and low rear-end design, as with the traditional roadster. It also has a relatively large luggage compartment. The use of the BMW iDrive control system in the BMW Roadster is another first. In conjunction with the

Sex appeal

As always, BlackBerry comes to the party in terms of looks. I hope the next Storm has built-in rubber edges to make it hardier so we can get rid of the rubber socks that we have to buy to protect it.

flowing lines, a kidney-shaped grill, large wheels and dynamic-looking wheel arches are all BMW hallmarks, particularly effective on the roadster. The decorative design elements manage to marry art and machine.

It comes preloaded with several useful applications:     

professional navigation system, the new-generation BMW iDrive comprises an ergonomically optimised controller and a folding 8.8-inch display with high-resolution graphic presentation. Driving the Z4 could not be easier, although its true beauty is revealed when it is driven hard. The seven-speed sports automatic with double clutch is simple and intuitive, and there is not the slightest interruption of traction when shifting gears. The auto mode makes traffic a breeze – an option for our congested roads – and is the closest BMW SMG boxes have come to being fully automatic. BMW has the best straight sixes around, and the model tested is the infinitely enjoyable twin turbo version. The engine found in other models has a maximum output of 225kW at 5 800rpm. The BMW Z4 sDrive35i I tested accelerates to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds – 0.1 of a second faster than its manual counterpart. Although fuel economy is unlikely to be anyone’s main reason for buying a Z4, fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 9.4 l/100km outperforms the manual gearbox by 0.4 l. Admittedly, one would have to drive a lot to notice the difference, but maybe that was the idea all along! S

Panel of experts Franchising

BlackBerry smartphones are cleverly thought out in terms of their usability and functionality, making them top on my list of smartphones. The Storm is a 3G phone, so download speeds are amazing. It made me wonder why all phones aren’t 3G yet. The screen is large and remarkably clear. Its SurePress™ technology allows you to feel the buttons on the screen when you press them. This is much better than other touch screen phones that leave you guessing what buttons you have touched, if any. This touch screen is fun. I just could not get enough of it. I also loved the fact that when you turn the phone on its side the entire screen rotates. (Yes, the iPhone also does this.) The camera on the phone is excellent. You can also load music and use it as a digital music player – every bit as good as the iPod. The operating system takes a little getting used to. I would like to see some features from the 8520 built into the next generation Storm. It is a little heavy, partly because of the metal plate at the back of the phone. I hope this is addressed in the next model.

The

BlackBerry® StormTM is a fantastic phone. I so enjoyed this phone that I found myself working out my budget to see if I could afford one.

Every month we pose a question sent in by a reader to our panel of experts. This month’s question:

What happens when a franchise agreement ends? How does franchise finance work with regards to renewal fees? The loan term generally coincides with the period of the franchise agreement. The business should therefore be debt free at the end of this period. If only the renewal fee needs to be paid, the business should be able to fund it with internally generated cash flow. However, should it include an additional capital investment to refurbish and/or expand the business, the franchisee could apply for finance, which would be considered on similar terms to the original loan. The business/shareholders would once again be required to make a contribution, the level of which would be determined by the amount to be borrowed and the financial structure of the business at the time. As a result of the franchisee’s proven track record and management ability at this point, his credit risk would probably be lower than before, and the requirements and terms of the funding may be more favourable than those of the initial loan.

3/15/10 11:39:24 AM

The renewal of the franchise agreement is not an automatic process. It is subject to both parties agreeing to the continuance of that agreement for a further period, normally five years. It is sometimes also subject to the lease agreement for the store, running parallel with the franchise agreement. Most stores have to refurbish within a five-year period. We try to align the revamp financing with the franchise agreement and the lease agreement. Upon confirmation from the franchisor and landlord that extensions will be granted, we start working on the finance.

52

Christine Schreuder, IDC

Mark Rose, Nedbank

www.succeed.co.za

0410SUC 033-066.indd 52

The franchisee usually has an option to renew the franchise agreement after three, five or 10 years. The amount and period is determined by the franchisor. The normal rules apply when a franchisee applies for finance. A franchisee will have to submit an application for finance supported by a cash flow projection to prove his ability to repay the loan. His own contribution and security will be negotiated based on this, if it is required, but a favourable credit record and goodwill may be enough to grant the finance. Another option is to start an investment fund, when the renewal is due, so that you have sufficient funds available to cover the renewal fees.

10 clichés that kill

1) The People Pleaser:

“The customer is always king.” Spending too much time, money or resources on the wrong customer can kill your business.

2) The Blame Shifter:

“I am not good at admin, so I leave it to the professionals.”

3) The Self Seeker:

“This is my business. The business owes me for my efforts. I should get paid first and everything else afterwards.” The business is more important than you are. If you destroy it, there is nothing left for you or anyone else. Its needs have to be met first. Yours come afterwards.

4) The Optimist:

“I know my clients will pay. I just don’t know when.” Slow-paying clients are almost as bad as clients who never pay. Your business can die while you wait for their money.

5)The Loser:

“I wish that some luck would come my way for a change.” If you rely on luck for success, you have no chance of achieving it.

16

7) The Complacent:

“We have nothing to worry about from the competition.”

Matching the franchise

Raymond Ackerman says you should keep your ear so close to the ground that you can hear grasshoppers jump. You need to know what the opposition is doing.

Banks

9) The Bank Hater:

“Depending on whether the franchise is accredited with us and on the level of support provided by the franchisor, the bank would be willing to take more risk on board and require a smaller level of security. If we do not know a franchise, we would want the franchisee to fully secure that loan.” Franchises that are accredited with the bank have funding structures specific to that franchise. Another advantage for the franchisee is collective marketing initiatives and a share in brand equity. Despite the support, Du Toit warns that franchisees must be sure that they are committing to a franchise that is in line with their own personalities. “If you are in the food business, it implies long hours, attention to detail and stock management. Someone who likes to go camping on weekends cannot be a food franchisee because weekends will be your busiest time.” Du Toit suggests that prospective franchisees first decide which franchising category best suits them and then look at all the different opportunities in that area. It might also be a good idea to rank a couple of

“I have cash flow issues because the bank does not want to lend me more money.” The real issue is to make your company sustainable, so that it does not need to be helped out by the bank. And remember that the bank does not owe you anything.

10) The Procrastinator:

“I will do something about it when things are more convenient.” S

recognise that the franchise model reduces some of the risks associated with independent business owners. “This is largely because franchisees receive ongoing support from the franchisor,” says Anita du Toit, franchise specialist at FNB.

This is an excuse not to start. Better get a job.

franchises that appeal to the individual, instead of only focusing on one opportunity. “It sometimes takes a long time to get a franchise, especially if you are applying for a really popular franchise with a waiting list. They may not necessarily have a franchise available for you in the time frame that you are looking for. It is a good idea to keep your eyes open for other opportunities and see what is out there.” The bank may expect a contribution from the franchisee of 30% to 50%, depending on the franchise, so this can also influence the brand choice. Once the right franchise is secured and the negotiations with the franchisor are complete, it is vitally important to see the bank as soon as possible. Du Toit says that some franchisees see the bank two weeks before the store’s doors are to open, which could have serious repercussions. Franchisees should be aware that securing finance is not always a quick process and they should allow enough time for the perfecting of securities, which could be a time consuming process depending on the type of security offered for the loan. Other key issues include obtaining approval in principle from the franchisor and that payout of a loan will be dependant on signed franchise and lease agreements being in place. A successful franchise is a combination of the right location, owner and brand. Although franchising mitigates the risk to would-be entrepreneurs to some extent, franchisees should still do their homework properly. S

Q. One of the most important documents/ strategies to ensure long-term sustainability is a Family Business Constitution. Is this document in place as a general rule? A. No, we have a long way to go to document this important strategy for FOBs in SA. Statistics show that less than 1% have a Family Business Constitution in place.

The estate of the surviving spouse is accordingly not increased by the value of the R3.5m.

Dodging the pitfalls

Q. Does a trust play an important role in succession planning for a family owned business?

Q. It seems as if many family business owners do not have an exit strategy in place. How can this best be addressed?

A. Yes but, for a trust to maintain its integrity, it should:

A. First of all there must be a fixed retirement date to allow the current owner manager and successor/s to plan accordingly to ensure that there will be a smooth transition of the business.

1. For Bad systems more information, contact Tracy Kroukamp on 021 509 2462 or send an email to tkroukamp@oldmutual.com According to Strauss, the key to franchise success is being able to duplicate successfully what has already been done. “Think about McDonald’s for a moment,” says Strauss. “The genius of Ray Kroc was that he created a business and a system that allowed practically anyone to be successful. That is because it was a great system and not dependent on one individual. McDonald’s works because, theoretically, anyone can be plugged into this system and still create the same result. It is this ideal that every prospective franchisor should look for when considering entering franchising.”

You need your admin systems working from the first day of your business and, if you want to run a profitable business, they cannot ever be ignored.

6)The Short Sighted:

“It is better to use the bank’s money than my own.” Remember that the bank’s money is expensive. The interest that you pay to the bank may hurt your business.

11/14/08 9:57:21 AM

2. The business model is not suitable to franchising Not all businesses can or indeed should be franchised. If the business model is wholly dependent upon the skills of a single person, an extraordinary owner or manager, then it cannot be duplicated and therefore cannot be franchised.

3. Inadequate advertising and marketing If you buy into a branded, well-known franchise, there are two immediate, tangible advantages. Firstly, because of previous advertising, people will know what your business is and what you do. Secondly, almost all national franchisors have continual national advertising campaigns. The same cannot be said for newer or smaller franchise systems that do not have the advantage of immediate name or brand recognition. Some franchises that are strong only in certain regions or provinces advertise strongly in those areas. This works in

Steve Strauss

the favour of those franchisees, but will not help a franchisee in another part of the country. “In this case, advertising is even more important. So you either need a franchisor that is committed to advertising and marketing, or you have to do it yourself.”

4. Too much competition Over the past few years we have seen a growing franchise sector in South Africa with numerous new brands entering the market. This has created a greater variety for the consumer but at the same time, it has created far more competition in popular franchise markets. “Make sure that the market you enter, especially your local market, is not over-saturated with similar businesses.” December 2008

websites are online artworks, but make few sales. Often, they cost more money to maintain than they actually make. Yet some unattractive websites with garish colours and hideous fonts somehow make money. Still, their bad design costs them. Many could double their income if they were well designed. The trick is to have a clean, well-conceived design with a clear call to action.

Making your call to action work

What do you want your users to do? Typical calls to action include: subscribe to a newsletter, fill out a questionnaire, or buy a product. It does not matter what your call to action is, as long as it is clear. Make it stand out by surrounding it with open space and providing an obvious motivation for customers to click on it. Are you giving them a free eBook? Have you given them enough information to entice them to buy?

➧➧TIP: Include only one call to action per page. If you want to achieve several things on your website, such as, getting someone to buy your eBook, answer a questionnaire or subscribe to your newsletter, make sure each one has its own page.

Other design fundamentals

There are many different design techniques. We will be looking at a few common ones. Website pages are usually divided into sections – columns of text or functions. For example, a two-column website could have a main area for text and information and an area for navigation (such as buttons that you click to go to the various pages on the website). Often, websites also include header and footer areas. A header area usually contains the website logo, which you can click to return to the home page of the website. Header areas also often contain navigation and banner adverts.

8

1/18/10 10:10 :49 AM

Footer areas are situated at the bottom of the page and usually contain some key information, such as who built the website. Extra navigation, such as a contact button (information to contact the company who owns the website) is usually situated in the footer. Divide the page to make the user experience easier and the information more accessible. A website with a lot of content (such as a magazine) will usually have more columns than one with a single purpose (such as flight bookings). It does not matter how you structure your website, as long as users can find what they are looking for as quickly as possible. >> page 10

Design must-haves

There are three fundamentals that you must consider, no matter how you choose to design your site or what technology you use.

Users will only give a website a few seconds to load before they move on to try another one Websites can be designed with graphic and non-graphic options. Some sites are built using flash. Flash websites can be highly interactive and sexy, and can include effective moving images. They are, however, difficult to add content to or change. Changes need to be made with the code, for which you need a specialist. These sites can also take a while to load, especially on slow lines. Content management system (CMS) websites still look good, but allow you flexibility. It is easy to add content with CMS, which helps with search engine rankings. It also means that you do not have to pay a website company every time you wish to make a change.

Users will only give a website a few seconds to load before they move on to try another one. Many people still use old technologies such as slow lines and old modems, and you need to cater for them. Optimise all your pictures (all images, including logos and design images) for fast loading to ensure that your site loads quickly. Do not use large files for elaborate background designs – they take too long to load. Make sure all your code works well so that there are no site problems that cause slower loading speeds.

➧Note: It is rumoured that Google is starting to rank slow loading sites lower than fast loading ones.

2 Make your messages work harder Your messages to your users are one of the most important marketing tools that you can have on your website. An error message can be turned into a sale if you are clever about it. A thank you message can lead to a referral. Think about the entire user process and design your messages to be more than just notes.

3 Colours and fonts Use colours that are appropriate to your audience and your brand. Having said that, never use red as the predominant colour for the site. Red looks great on sports cars, but terrible on websites. Use sans serif fonts (arial instead of times new roman), which are easier to read on-screen. S

“Human behaviour repeats itself; there is nothing new in the markets.” The lesson: Knowing the basics of human psychology is very helpful in the markets. Fear and panic are forces that drive markets down very quickly. Selling out on a panic news event is often the wrong thing to do, because markets shift their focus back to the future as soon as the news event is factored in.

markets have consistently proven to be one of the best places to earn inflation-beating returns over the long term. The problem for private investors hoping to gain access to these returns is that they usually do not have enough money to spread over a large variety of stocks in order to diversify their portfolio and minimise risks.

For them, unit trusts can provide exposure to a variety of stocks, managed by a knowledgeable professional. Another advantage of unit trusts is that the underlying shares can be broken up into percentages. This is helpful for investment in blue chip companies where the high cost of individual shares often make them inaccessible for private investors. Economic conditions have not discouraged investment houses from introducing new products, and South Africans now have a choice of over 700 unit trusts in the local market. As a result, fund

unit trusts Active and passive funds

Passive unit trust funds have a set mandate regarding which shares they are allowed to invest in. This allocation can only be changed after a set period (such as quarterly) and investors know exactly what they are buying. Fund managers of actively managed funds can change the allocations of the fund to find the best value for investors. The fund manager therefore regularly buys and sells blocks of shares on the market. These transactions attract brokerage fees, meaning that actively managed funds have more costs attached to it. The success of the fund is up to the skill of the fund manager. It is important to look at a fund manager’s track record before investing in an actively managed fund.

managers are trying every possible angle to differentiate their offering from the rest of the market to attract buyer interest. New investors may be overwhelmed by this choice, but for ease of comparison, unit trusts can be grouped into a few types of funds.

Fresh face for the MX-5 An improved version of the Mazda MX-5 Roadster Coupe was released in the last quarter of 2009. Since launching the first-generation MX-5 in 1989, Mazda has stuck to the concept that driving enjoyment is the key value offered by the MX-5. Through two full redesigns and numerous improvements, Mazda has continued to heighten and advance the MX-5’s key function and purpose as a sports car. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Mazda MX-5, which is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the best-selling two-seat sports car ever (currently at 850 000 units). Over two decades, the MX-5 has won a total of 178 major automotive awards. The third generation is no exception. It won 58 awards, including Japan Car of the Year 2005 and 2006, and Top Gear magazine’s Roadster of the Year 2005.

The introduction of the MiEV OS – into which the company has poured its wealth of know-how gained from decades of electric vehicle (EV) research and development – has provided the kind of high performance and reliability that benefits a new-generation EV. The i-MiEV was praised as the ultimate in environmental efficiency – it emits no CO2 while being driven. S

A new trend has arisen which sees companies giving their consumers the chance to make money from them. These consumers, termed sellsumers, are a growing group driven by the need for money and enabled by the growing technology of the internet. Businesses looking to tap into this pool of consumer resources are taking advantage of their consumers’ ideas for new products, services, and business ventures and paying for them. If you are ready to make the most of the sellsumer market, here are nine ideas to get you started. 1. Help people to rent out their excess storage space. 2. Connect campers with people who have big plots of land. 3. Pay people for their reviews or articles of holiday destinations, plays, movies and other forms of entertainment.

The internet offers a remarkable marketing opportunity for all professionals in the form of blogs. These can be used to set yourself up as an expert in your field. All you need to do is set up a blog – this can be done free on www. wordpress.com or www.blogger.com – then you advertise your blog address on all your business cards. This allows all prospective clients to ‘test you before buying’ by reading your blog. Needless to say your blog needs to be informative and well written. Transition from entrepreneurial to professional management

Managerial style needs to continually change according to the requirements of the business. A natural progression in the lifecycle of a business is when entrepreneurial management needs to transform to professional management. “This is a major cause of problems in companies,” says Bricknell. “Entrepreneurs are less risk averse, they move fast, and they expect everybody to keep up with them. Often people cannot.” When the company gets to a certain size, the entrepreneurs need to step out, and they need to employ professional managers to get the systems, processes and procedures in place.”

Cutting to the bone

Cutting into the infrastructure of the company is deadly. “As soon as you cut to the bone, you create a terrible wound that takes a long time to heal. Reactionary retrenchment programmes, and not looking after your customers, as well as not protecting your relationship with your suppliers and staff are some examples of self-inflicted mortal wounds.”

Ineffective management A huge problem in business is ineffective management. This includes employing, retaining, and promoting unsuitable managers. A good salesperson is often promoted to a sales manager, where they fail dismally, and then they leave. Good sales people do not necessarily make good managers. Many companies fall into this trap.

As is a tale, so is life: not how long

vash@gigibug.co.za I 084 235 0084

The ultimate collapse of the business happens after management has lost the long-term vision of the business. Business problems set in a long time before the chickens come home to roost. “Many companies come to us with problems when it is too late, and there is nothing we can do, because they are dead on arrival,” he says. “They leave it too late, because ego gets in the way. They can see the train coming, but they do not get out of the way.” Action supersedes all. If you do not take action at the first signs of trouble your company will die. “There is no such thing as a quick fix. Often companies find themselves rushing for Elastoplasts to stem the flow of blood when it is already too late. Turnaround management is a unique form of management, and not seeking the right professional help in time will destroy you.” S

it is, but how good it is, is what matter
