To Work Under The Sun La Spezia, 3rd place design for competition. IT The competition brief challenged us with the renovation of a former cinema in the historical city of La Spezia to be converted into a co-working space. An important element for this project, contrary to the original essence of the building as a cinema, is the sun and its light. The sun is a feature that can also be seen in the sinuous shapes of the design such as the circular hollow and staircase above the stage, the filtration wall at the entrance and the custom-made tables. Nonetheless the main focus was to provide sufficient natural light inside the building and ithas been achieved mostly through the placement of several skylights on the existing roof and the removal of the physical barriers that blocked the light coming from the main street. The identity of the cinema is preserved by adapting both the stage and the platea to the new use and providing a certain degree of flexibility to the spaces. January 2019 6

Portofino Resort Dubai, Final design for UNICA. ES One of the first resorts to be built on “The World” islands in Dubai for a larger Masterplan called “The Heart of Europe”, aimed to bring luxurious holiday destinations inspired by some of the most notable locations of Europe. This resort references the Italian city of Portofino with its colorful facades, its porches, its arches and an ovreall Mediterranean atmosphere. It offers a large marina, first-class restaurants, a panoramic Sky Lounge and a Spa for women only. My duties involved mostly the design and 3D modeling of the Presidential Suite on the 5th floor and the Sky Lounge between the 5th and 6th floor. What I am showing in the next pages are renders made by various external companies through the 3D models made by me.

The Frame, Flexible Architecture Gent, Thesis project. BE In the context of Gantopia, a new sustainable neighbourhood in the area of Dampoort, Gent, we have collectively researched, developed and questioned the key elements for its creation. My personal design focuses on the research and application of flexibility concepts in different layers according to their relation with the public environment. It is a multi-functional adaptable building, where the ground floor, due to the highest exposure to urban, social and economical changes, is not enclosed by walls but open to host temporary activities of all sorts. The first floor is proportioned to host industrial/ exhibition functions with a high level of adaptability due to modular dry-constructed elements adjustable on a fine grid. The upper layers are an ever changing system of housing. July 2017 14

The Stepping Village Gent, Design Studio project. BE Through the analysis of a case study: Asnago and Vender’s multifunctional building in Milan and deep researches on the topics of stacking, modularity and flows, I came to the design of the Stepping Village. Facing the challenge of bringing industry inside the city borders and merging it with residential activities, I opted for a terraced main block on top of which small row-houses-like dwellings spread within a pre-determined grid but with large development options. The idea is to recreate the environment of a small town where the hilly terrain is given by the industrial layer underneath while on top of it a more slow-paced and silent atmosphere takes place. Diagonal lifts and windy stairways create pedestrian axis above while a gallery on the ground level gives access to small cargo-trains for the delivery of materials.

Roof Patch Gent, Design Studio project. BE Within the structure of an abandoned industrial building along the former harbour of Gent I have created a design with a large number of functions and activities. The main element is the allocation of three large greenhouses lifted up beneath the former roof, acting both as a productive centre of edible vegetables and as a skylight, bringing diffused light to the level below. On the ground floor the building is divided in two: on one side rigid borders define the spaces for a food market, canteen, common kitchen and coworking space with a gallery crossing through; on the other side greenery merges with clusters of modular shelters and common areas for the temporary residence of refugees, travellers and the re-integration of homeless people.

Grow-up LAB Gent, Zero Impact Building course project. BE For this course we had to design a passive building, possibly with more outputs than inputs as results of our design choices. This proposal is an educational greenhouse, meaning that the greenhouse is joint with research facilities allowing for the experimentation of indoor farming techniques (such as hydroponics, aeroponics... etc) and showcasing them to the local population and students. A careful study for the passive heating and cooling of the building has been made, using the flows of hot air, the water harvested from the nearby canal and the thermal mass properties of the concrete slabs to manage the temperature and humidity of the greenhouse and the research facility, which have very different requirements.

La Salvadera San Jose, Costa Rica, Atelier Sud project. BE Small intervention in a public garden in Costa Rica’s capital, the aim is to provide shade and cover during rainy days. It is modular and designed with local timber, the sandbox in the middle is both a playground and a filter for the rainwater which can then be pumped manually.

Hoboken Densification Antwerp, Design Studio project. BE With the rapid growth of the population of Antwerp a densification of the residential outskirts of the city is required. My design starts with the re-qualification of one of the main infrastructural axis that lead to the city centre through the intensification of public transportation over cars and the expansion of green areas in favour of a more welcoming urban environment. On the crossing of two main roads I have designed a new dense residential area made of three buildings in two different typologies: two line buildings with open ground floor, apartments on three levels and a lowered green square beneath them; one tower building standing from a structural core with a public rampart and a solar-powered roof for markets and temporary events.
