The Truck People
OCTOBER 2017
Welcome to Gilbert & Roach News.
Australians are by nature early adopters of technology. When the world turned its attention to reducing exhaust emissions, many claimed the new limits would be impossible to achieve. Yet, the new limits of emissions were not only met, they are continually being strengthened.
SUPPLY
Fuel consumption of the new high horsepower and high torque engines is vastly superior when compared to engines that were considered groundbreaking just a few years ago. Shorter journey times, extended service intervals, lower fuel consumption and greater reliability all contribute to a reduction in total cost of operation (TCO). The Kenworth and DAF brands embody the highest standards of North American and European truck efficiencies across the medium to heavy-duty segment of the industry. Isuzu Trucks has been the leading provider of trucks to the Australian market for 29 consecutive years. That enviable record is founded on listening to the needs of operators in this highly competitive market and finding solutions where opportunities exist. At Gilbert & Roach we have the expertise in our team to provide the right solution to any transport requirement, together with the customer support to ensure that equipment fulfils your expectations. The opening of our PacLease division at Huntingwood opens up a new in-house alternative of vehicle leasing and rental to fill the temporary demand, without involving capital expenditure. Every large fleet needs smaller vehicles to provide backup to the company, more often in a support role such as with the pick-up and delivery market (PUD). Gilbert & Roach is Australia’s highest volume retailer of the Isuzu D-Max ute and cab/chassis range, plus the highly capable MUX for passenger transport. With a wide range of options, and the reliability born from our experience, we know we can provide the highest levels of reliability for which Gilbert & Roach has forged its reputation. Thank you for enabling Gilbert & Roach to work with your business to provide the customer service and support you expect and deserve. Regards,
Gary Melrose, Dealer Principal.

Kenworth’s new T409 matched to a quad-axle tanker is the next step for improved productivity in the Simpson Fuel Supplies’ fleet.
T
he highly competitive fuel distribution industry has consistently been an early adopter of the latest safety technologies, and, with the latest opportunities made available by Performance Based Standards (PBS), operators have been able to achieve new levels of efficiency and productivity. Simpson Fuel Supplies has grown from small beginnings back in 1963 as a petrol station and mechanical repair/ panelbeating business, founded by Jack Simpson and his son Neville, on the Great Western Highway at Wentworthville NSW. The Star Auto Centre, as it was then named, was initially achieving fuel sales at the site of around 30,000 litres per month.
Over time these fuel sales figures grew to a supply of 1.25 million litres per month, and with such a substantial increase the fuel sales eventually became the primary focus of the business, overshadowing the mechanical and panelbeating side of the operation.
CHAIN
In 1983 Neville Simpson purchased a fuel distributorship on a five-acre site with a single truck and single depot operation at Oakville on Sydney’s far western outskirts. At the time of purchase the business was moving around 75,000 litres of product per annum, a lot of which was transported on flat-top trucks in drums. Within 12 months Neville had moved from drum transport into tanker deliveries, and this paved the way for the business to expand and grow to its current size where it employs 35 staff. The annual movement of petroleum products has now reached the 70-million-litre mark, supplied through three depots located at Oakville, Werrington and Mittagong in the Southern Highlands. Neville still runs the business today, alongside his son Jason as co-owner, and Simpson Fuel Supplies still utilises the Oakville site as its main operations and administration centre.
The Simpson fleet comprises one 19 m B-double tanker, four single tankers, six rigid trucks, seven mini-tanker onsite refuellers, and a couple of flat-top trucks for oil and AdBlue deliveries. The prime mover fleet is predominantly Kenworth, with the mini tankers and other rigid trucks being based on Isuzu chassis, all of which are purchased through Gilbert and Roach Trucks at Huntingwood. “Initially, we utilised our trailer fleet to only service our own depots. However, we have expanded to include around 9 service station retail sites and 10-12 commercial customers, which has increased equipment productivity substantially. Coupled with our increasing mini-tanker operations we see this as an expanding market due to Sydney’s expanding infrastructure growth, and this has resulted in our company becoming the leading BP fuel supplier in Sydney,” explained Jason. GILBERT & ROACH “Our new PBS-approved quad-axle tanker is coupled to a new Kenworth T409 prime mover powered by an ISXe5 Cummins engine at 550 horsepower and 1850 ft-lb of torque and with an 18-speed Eaton Roadranger manual gearbox,” said Jason. “This combination with our new T409 results in a 48,600-litre maximum capacity, six compartment, quadaxle road tanker, featuring Hendrickson INTRAAX axles, a push steerable rear axle, with drum brakes throughout on Alcoa alloy rims. “ABS, multi-volt TEBS (trailer electronic braking system), and rollover stability as per PBS requirements are controlled through the WABCO EBS system to comply with ADR 38. Braking and suspension functions are controlled and monitored by the WABCO Smartboard,

a centrally located multifunction control panel, with all functions easily accessed by a single click, to monitor axle weights, suspension height, odometer and diagnostic functions. “With our varied mix of work incorporating retail and commercial fuel supply, our plans to expand on our mini-tanker market, and the greater freedom of design in equipment by way of the PBS scheme, we have a really positive outlook for the future,” added Jason.

RENT, TRY AND BUY P acLease is the leasing and rental division of PACCAR Australia, and Gilbert & Roach at Huntingwood is proud to offer the services of PacLease to its customers looking for transport solutions such as a lack of spare vehicle availability or short-term surges in workload, through to long-term loans, full service leases, or contract maintenance.
Gilbert & Roach Huntingwood is one of 10 full service PacLease sites, with a rental fleet of DAF and Kenworth models, starting from a 12-pallet curtainsider rigid through to B-double rated prime movers. To give our customers a brief introduction to just two of the PacLease options G&R News took to the highway in two new PacLease trucks – a Kenworth T610 and a DAF XF105 – to see just how they compared. The T610 is offered in day-cab and 36-inch sleepercab options, with larger sleeper cab options being considered for introduction at a later date. Our evaluation unit was a new T610 with a 36-inch bunk and the latest Cummins X15 set at 405 kW (550 hp) with 2508 Nm of torque. The driveline was completed by Eaton’s UltraShift Plus automated-manual 18-speed transmission. Climbing into the new Kenworth cabin was outstanding. Even with the optional square fuel tanks fitted, the steps on the fuel tanks were full width and mounted externally to the tank. The optional grab handles, painted yellow for easy recognition, provided three points of contact at all times of the entry and exit procedure. Doors and door surrounds are fitted with Kenworth’s new triple seals to better insulate the cabin from noise and dust ingress.
6
GILBERT & ROACH OCTOBER 2017
Our load for the day in B-double combination was bulk fertiliser, with a weight of 62.09 tonnes gross.
The new automatic climate control system fitted as standard to the new T610 cabin is superb. When set at 22 degrees C in automatic mode, the cabin temperature was constant all day. With taper leaf (parabolic) springs on the steer axle, and with the standard-fit Kenworth Airglide 400 eightbag suspension at the rear, the ride quality provided is excellent. The truck continues to handle well, particularly through corners, without excessive body roll. The optionally fitted disc brakes were outstanding, especially as the trailer set was also running full disc brakes.
Another big plus of the new cabin, particularly with the optional sleeper cabin, is the legroom available for tall drivers. The seat travel is particularly impressive. The increased width of the cabin is brilliant, and makes access into the sleeper cabin a lot easier. Vision of the road from the cab is also excellent. The new wiper setup is a major improvement, as the blades cover more of the screen for a larger view for the driver in wet conditions. The new mirror setup also helps to reduce blind spots around the A-pillar compared with the old style West Coast mirrors.
The XF is available in three cab variants known as Comfort Cab, Space Cab, and Super-Space Cab. The mid-roof height cab, the Space Cab, was provided as part of the evaluation. This cab provides near walk-around ability with its internal roof height of 1738 mm. Those drivers less than 1.73 meters in height will have full walk-around access. When opting for the Super-Space Cab, the interior height increases to a whopping 2.1 metres!
As the flagship of the DAF Tuck range, the XF105 competes in the 500-plus horsepower segment that includes single trailer, B-double and rigid applications such as truck and dog.

7
GILBERT & ROACH Powering the big DAF is PACCAR’s own engine, known as the MX-13, which is an inline six-cylinder engine of 12.9 litres that reaches its maximum power rating of 375 kW (510 hp) at an engine speed of 1500-1900 rpm. Maximum torque output is 2500 Nm at an rpm range of between 1000 and 1410 rpm. To meet Australia’s ADR 80/03 emission reduction requirements, DAF has elected to use SCR (AdBlue) technology. The test truck was fitted with the standard transmission offering – the ZF 16-speed overdrive AS Tronic automated manual gearbox. As an option, Eaton’s 18-speed constant mesh manual transmission is available.
8
GILBERT & ROACH OCTOBER 2017
The standard GCM rating of the XF is 70,000 kg. However, DAF may increase that for specific customer applications with approval from its engineering department. The unique factor of DAFs sold in Australia is the driveline, which is effectively a hybrid of European and North American technology. Whilst the engine and the standard gearbox offering (ZF) are European in origin, the XF uses Meritor MT23-165 rear axles with drum brakes (the steer axle is disc brakes) and the rear suspension is Kenworth’s Airglide 400 eight-airbag offering. The interior of the XF is smart and feels of high quality, with the light colours used in the interior helping to create the spacious feel. There were no rattles or squeaks experienced from the interior during the course of the day.
The XF would have to be one of the quietest prime movers I have ever driven, and with the ZF 16-speed making easy work of the load, gear changes were both smooth and predictable. The PACCAR MX engine delivers impressive levels of retardation through the MX engine brake. This is a combination of an engine brake and an exhaust brake, delivering 320 kW of retardation at 2100 rpm. The XF tested was fitted with the optional safety systems including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).

DISTRIBUTION BY DAF DAF has carved out a loyal following in the Australian market, and it is now a respected brand by many operators that appreciate the growing popularity of European vehicles.
This change in buying habits, in particular with the large fleets, happened, in part, due to companies requiring vehicles with higher levels of driver safety features, such as driver’s airbag, disc brakes with ABS and EBS, as well as driver aids such as proximity cruise control systems and lane departure warning systems. G&R News took to the road recently with a new DAF LF FAP 6x2, providing a unique opportunity to trial this newly launched vehicle that was previewed at the Brisbane Truck Show in May this year. Whilst the new Euro 6 cabin is not new to Australia (this was launched by DAF in 4x2 configuration in 2015), it’s the first time we have seen the 6x2 lift-up pusher axle with the new cab. The LF sold by the DAF dealer network in Australia is somewhat unique, as it features the Euro 6 cabin (Euro 6 being mandatory in Europe), but with the same Euro 5 running gear that was offered in the previous product.
10
GILBERT & ROACH OCTOBER 2017
In addition to the cabin change, DAF now imports OEMapproved 6x2 versions direct from Europe, rather than as a 4x2 chassis that was converted to a 6x2 by adding a lazy axle on arrival in this country. When compared to other 6x2 rigid vehicles from both the Japanese and Europeans, the DAF LF and CF 75 models feature a pusher axle, rather than the industry standard trailing axle.
The industry-mandated maximum overhang of 3.7 m is used on this type of vehicle. If the trailing axle of a 6x2 is lifted, the overhang measurement then commences from the centre of the drive axle ahead of the lifting lazy axle, creating excessive overhang, which may be over the maximum allowable length.
With a pusher axle located ahead of the drive axle, operators can experience the benefits of a lift-up axle, whilst still being within the permissible overhang laws. The benefits of a lift-up axle are better fuel economy because of reduced drag, improved traction in some situations and also reduced tyre wear when the axle is not operational. At the heart of the new DAF LF 6x2 is a Cummins-derived PACCAR GR powerplant. At 6.7 litres in capacity, this turbo intercooled in-line six-cylinder engine produces 280 hp (from 2100 to 2500 rpm) and 1020 Nm of torque (1200-1800 rpm), and utilises SCR (AdBlue) Euro 5 emission reduction standards. The driveline is completed through a nine-speed, full synchromesh ZF transmission and a hypoid rear axle. Suspension is provided through parabolic leaf springs on the front and a six-airbag bogie suspension setup at the rear, including a driver controlled keypad for lowering and raising the ride height via ECAS (Electronically Controlled Air Suspension).
The standard fit nine-speed ZF synchromesh manual is a pleasure to use. With a light effort and very positive shift feel this transmission uses an H-over-H pattern, with a switch on the side of the gear lever to shift between high and low ranges. Although not currently available, an automated transmission would be a welcome addition, enhancing its appeal to the many fleets that are now refining their buying preferences to include AMT or fully automatic transmissions.

EIGHT WHEELS The popular 8x4 Isuzu FYJ 2000 is a top contender in the cost-competitive rigid truck market
A
s Australia’s leading truck brand, Isuzu knows how to produce a truck that hits the mark in the market that it targets. Since its launch in early 2013, the FYJ2000 8x4 has proven popular as an agitator, which makes up the volume share of its sales. It is also just as comfortable as a bin truck, concrete pump, tipper or tilt tray, like the demo unit that G&R News took for a drive.
There are many aspects of the FYJ 2000 that have made it an ideal choice in this segment, such as the low tare weight, cooled EGR (therefore no need for AdBlue), Allison transmission, and a quiet comfortable cab to keep the drivers happy around town. The FY series comes in 8x4 and a locally modified 10x4 configuration, with the FYJ, FYH and FYX models, then there are nine variants with different transmissions, wheelbases, axles and suspension for you to choose from depending on your specific needs. 12
GILBERT & ROACH OCTOBER 2017
In 8x4 configuration, GVM is 30,000 kg with a GCM of 42,500 kg. This is increased with the 10x4 configuration to a GVM of 35,000 kg and GCM at the same rating of 42,500 kg. The Isuzu comes with an impressive list of specs, starting with the SITEC Series III 350, which is a sixcylinder, 24-valve SOHC. It meets ADR80/03 (Euro 5) through a cooled EGR with exhaust Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) rather than DPD filter that needs burning off, which is useful when the truck spends a lot of its time idling. Power is rated at 257 kW (345 hp) at 2000 rpm and torque reaches 1422 Nm (1049 lb-ft) at 1400 rpm.
AND ATTITUDE
The seating has a 3rd spot in the middle that might come in useful if you go for a run with some mates, or folds down for use as storage tray when not needed. The cab’s mirrors offer great visibility all-round, being easily adjusted with a button behind your left elbow, and they definitely feel solid, unlike some of the competition that can vibrate after time.
Isuzu also supplies a PTO model, which is set up ready for many of the applications that the model targets. Here, the PTO is driven through a constant mesh, which rotates at 1.1 times the engine speed. This gets a 440 Nm maximum output torque and spins anticlockwise when viewed from the rear. On first impressions the eight-wheeler is a very quiet truck, running at a comfortable 1600 rpm at 100 km/h. The cab is put together well and is very quiet inside. It’s a little taller than some of its competition, and, once inside, the ISRI 6860 seat feels great. The steering wheel adjusts up/down and forward/back to find the best position easily for the driver. The Isuzu FYJ’s cab meets ADR42 as a compliant sleeper with a mattress. It also meets ECE-R29 and ECE-R93 with its front underrun, as you’d expect, and also comes with a driver airbag.
For entertainment, the Isuzu is fitted with the impressive Digital Audio Visual Entertainment system with a 6.2inch LCD screen, known as DAVE for short. This gives the drivers a long list of extras to keep them entertained, such as radio, CD, DVD, DAB+ digital radio, Bluetooth, USB, SD card plus auxiliary input connections. The transmission comes in three options, being an Eaton RTO box with ten-speed constant mesh used for the PTO models only, then there is the ZF 9S box with nine-speed synchromesh manual, then for the automatic option, the Allison 4430 series with six speeds. For the demo truck, G&R News headed out with the Allison automatic, which is a great option especially around town. On our drive that took us through highway, hills, country and city, the box felt at home in all areas. Axles are supplied by Meritor, with taper leaf suspension on the FYH2000 model, and Hendrickson HAS461 Airbags on the FYJ2000 model. The airbag setup gave a comfortable and stable ride, even on tight, twisty roads and those that contain a few bumps and surprises. GILBERT & ROACH OCTOBER 2017

THREE DIMENSIONAL Isuzu helps you put what you want, where you want it
H
ere’s a great solution from Isuzu for any company involved in landscape work that will immediately improve efficiency and reduce trip times.
Isuzu’s NLR 55/45-150 Tri-Tipper is the first to offer a unique three-way tipping operation. At the touch of a switch inside the cabin, the body can be tipped from the rear as a conventional tipping body, or, alternatively, to the left or the right. There are no pins, levers or other modifications to make outside of the vehicle. This simplifies the total operation and reduces the risk of operator injury, such as fingers jammed in pins, levers and ball joints. Furthermore, there is significantly less risk of damage to the superstructure of the body due to operator error from not having pins locked correctly before operating the tipper control.
The hydraulic hoist is operated by a transmissiondriven, power-take-off (PTO). Unlike most gearbox mounted PTOs, the driver does
14
GILBERT & ROACH OCTOBER 2017
not need to depress the clutch prior to operating the PTO. When the driver pulls the tip lever, the PTO engages automatically, at the same time raising the tipper body. However, the truck needs to be stationery with the gearbox in neutral during this operation. When spreading material such as stone, sand or gravel, forward motion can be achieved by selecting first gear (after the PTO has been engaged) and then moving forward by the driver releasing the clutch. As with a regular transmission PTO, when the clutch is disengaged, the PTO will stop pumping and the tipper body lift will halt. The tipper raises and lowers to full height in a remarkable 20 seconds.
A further advantage of the Tri-Tipper is that the tipper body may be tipped when the truck has a trailer attached. When used on work such as adding mulch to garden beds on median strips, council workers need only access the adjacent lane, either on the left or right-hand-side. With a conventional rear tip body, two lanes need to be closed for the truck to reverse and dump, then reposition before repeating the operation in different locations. The Tri-Tipper is available in two GVMs, at 5500 kg GVM for a light truck licence or de-rated to 4500 kg for a car licence. The tare weight of 3045 kg allows approximately 1.5 tonnes payload on a car licence, and 2.5 tonnes of payload when rated at 5500 kg and with a light truck licence. The 3.0-litre, Isuzu 4JJ1-TCS engine, is a four-cylinder, turbocharged and intercooled unit that produces 110 kW (148 hp) at 2800 rpm and 375 Nm of torque at 1600-2800 rpm, with a five-speed, overdrive fully synchromesh Isuzu manual gearbox. In fifth gear (overdrive) the truck runs at 2550 rpm at 100 km/h via a final drive ratio of 4.777:1. Isuzu is currently considering introducing an AMT version to add further appeal to customers, particularly in local council applications.
absorbers, providing much better ride and handling than a live front axle. At the rear is a typical taper leaf main spring, with a helper taper leaf for when the truck is at high weights. The rear axle is a live axle, rather than an independent like the front end. There’s a full array of safety features as standard, with Isuzu’s electronic stability control (IESC), ABS, traction control (ASR), hill-start assist (HSA) plus electronic brake force distribution (EBD), driver and passenger airbags and seatbelt pretensioners. The cabin is ECE-R29 compliant. Standard spec includes a 6.2-inch touchscreen-enabled audiovisual system with Bluetooth phone functionality, AM/FM radio as well as DAB digital radio. GPS navigation and mapping upgrade is also available. Furthermore, the truck has large, heated and electrically adjustable mirrors, cornering lamps, and Michelin tyres, all as standard equipment.
In place of a conventional solid I-beam front axle, the NLR has a fully independent front end that uses coil springs and double-acting hydraulic shock

DEPENDABLE D-MAX T
here’s nothing better for a fleet manager than to have peace of mind, especially when it comes to the selection of the vehicles operated within a major organisation.
ENGIE Services is a large, French owned multinational corporation that employs over 150,000 personnel worldwide, with a global annual turnover of EUR 70 billion and operating in over 70 countries. Recent years have seen the company transition into the development of green and sustainable alternative energies, as it has expanded through its acquisition of servicerelated industries across Australia and New Zealand. 16
GILBERT & ROACH OCTOBER 2017
“In the Australian market we have been developing the service and support systems under the ENGIE Services brand that underpin our activities in the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning & Refrigeration (HVAC&R) industries, the provision of fire protection services and the installation and maintenance of audiovisual equipment, digital signage and control systems,” said Paul Reid, group treasurer for ENGIE Services.
In December 2015 ENGIE Services announced the acquisition of Desa Australia, a leading provider of infrastructure services Australia-wide for communication and electrical solutions to corporate business, Government and the Australian Defence Force. Two years later, the corporation acquired West Australian Mechanical Services (WAMS), a specialist commercial and industrial air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation business.
“With 1300 employees across Australia we have to know the vehicles we select for our service technicians have the right level of durability and reliability, whether they work in Sydney or Melbourne, or in remote areas in the Northern Territory and Western Australia,” said Paul Reid. “During our evaluation process we determined that the Isuzu D-MAX offered the benefit of additional strength, having been designed and built by a major truck maker, rather than a car manufacturer.” “With a national fleet in excess of 500 vehicles, the D-MAX provides us with the choice of 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrains, offering the right specification to withstand the different demands of the country.” “With 70 percent of our fleet being utes or cab/chassis variants, the D-MAX outnumbers other makes by a ratio of 2:1. As we transition towards a complete fleet replacement, that ratio continues to increase in favour of the D-MAX.” “Our specification is for diesel engines and automatic transmissions and our cab/chassis units are fitted with HiDrive integral aluminium service bodies supplied and fitted by the Bison Group of Goulburn, NSW.” “Our operational experience of the Isuzu utes has resulted in all our D-MAX vehicles being leased over a period of five years, compared with other makes that we limit to four-year lease terms. We made this decision because of the strength and the durability that we know comes with the D-MAX and the customer service we receive
from Gilbert & Roach at Huntingwood, our local dealer in Sydney,” said Mr. Reid. In single-cab, space-cab or dual-cab form, the D-MAX is available with a factory tub, an aluminium or steel tray or for fitment with a specialist body. The key to its strength and ability comes in the form of the Isuzu 3.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine. In its latest form this Euro 5 emissions compliant engine produces maximum power of 130 kW and peak torque of 430 Nm. With a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, the driveability of the D-MAX stands out on the highway for the effortless manner in which it tackles any job, from touring to towing. Both the D-MAX and the MU-X ranges are backed by the Isuzu UTE Australia Service Plus Programme, which includes a five-year/130,000 km new vehicle warranty, five years roadside assistance and five scheduled capped-price services within a five-year/50,000 km interval (whichever occurs first), meaning that service costs per year can be as low as $200. Vehicle owners can also receive a personalised Service Plus Driving Report. For Driving Report Eligible Vehicles, participating Isuzu UTE dealers can connect advanced diagnostic software to the vehicle and analyse the stored driving data. A personalised driving report will be generated from the data, providing information about the vehicle usage, as well as useful tips on how to improve the fuel efficiency of the Isuzu D‑MAX or MU‑X.
