From Our Curate
January 2014
As we walk together into the New Year, no doubt we will be pondering what 2014 holds for us. I believe it’s important that we make the most of what will be a year of opportunity, an opportunity to walk with others in the way of Christ and to walk with fellow brothers and sisters in faith. If we put Christ at the centre of our lives, our lives are given a different purpose and meaning. As Christians we should be proud of our faith and profess that faith to others. We recall the words of prophesy from Isaiah, which Jesus used as an example, a profession of faith to others. “The spirit of the lord is on me, for he has anointed me to bring the good news to the afflicted. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives, sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim a year of favour from the lord.” Jesus then said today “this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Here we have words that point to the opportunity for each one of us to walk with Christ throughout the year. These words are good news, because they are liberating, giving us hope and purpose, forgiveness and the opportunity to move forward, to be reconciled to God each day of our life. If we are to be reconciled to God, it’s important that we recapture the sense of mystery. Mystery is a truth which lies beyond us but it can be entered into, it can be explored. The idea of mystery exposes our limitations as humans and yet mystery speaks to us. We believe not because we understand and see the truth of our faith but because we have inherited our faith through Christ, who neither deceives nor is deceived.
4
Our faith is truths which have been revealed to us through the working of the Holy Spirit, guiding and directing us as we take the opportunity to walk with Christ. Faith in Jesus Christ today, means that tomorrow must be different for us and for society. The call of Jesus for us to walk in faith is personal and also communal and so we as Christians are called to make a new start at the beginning, not just of the New Year but at the beginning of each day. We do this by placing our lives within a pattern of prayer and worship, of sacrament and scripture. In this rule of life we begin to notice that the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Jesus as he recited the scripture of Isaiah, as Christians our eyes too must be fixed on Jesus each day of our lives. May this New Year be an opportunity whereby each one of us can enter into the mystery of Christ through the sacraments of the church, through the word of God in the Bible and through the encounter of prayer and worship as we place these at the centre of our lives we will find that tomorrow will be different and God’s purposes will be our purposes. If we look for God every day in all situations, good and bad alike, then we will most certainly find him working in our lives, in our homes, in our families and friends, in our communities and in the world. It’s my prayer that this year may be for each one of us an opportunity to walk with Christ in faith, through good and difficult times, by putting him at the centre of our lives. On Behalf of our Rector, Rev John and his family, myself and my family, May I wish you all a very Happy New Year. Every Blessing, Rev Antony.

Thirsk Carers Support a project of Thirsk Community Care Association (A Charity) supports families of children with special needs by providing volunteers to give the parents/carers a break. We urgently need volunteers in the Richmond area. Having a child with a disability can make it difficult to do a lot of the things families enjoy with their children. It is vital that parents feel sure that the volunteer is confident in the care that their child needs. Training is often arranged specific to the child. The volunteer may take the child on an activity or sit in with the child to enable parents to have a break. Have you got experience or are you interested in getting experience of special needs children? Do you have empathy with carers? If the answer to either of those questions is yes, and you have some time to give by been a volunteer, then you need to give us a call. Whilst this is a volunteer opportunity travel expenses will be paid. If you would like to know more about the project please e-mail gill.burn@tscca.org.uk or give Gill a call on 01845 523115.

Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely, and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you’ll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life and you’ll find that you have more of it. 9

It’s been another non-stop month, here at school. Before we even begin to think about Advent and Christmas, there’s so much going on in November. At the beginning of the month we had our usual Poppy Appeal collection in school, with the older children taking round poppies to sell. This year we doubled last year’s total and raised over £100 – isn’t it amazing how it all adds up? At the end of the week, four of our Y5 and Y6 children represented the school by attending the Remembrance Sunday service at church and laying the wreath at the memorial in Friary Gardens. It’s always a moving occasion and one which I know is important to our school family. We continued with two more charity events this half term: we collected 41 shoeboxes of goodies for the Samaritan’s Purse appeal to give gifts to deprived children around the world and then went on to raise more than £200 for Children in Need. Almost everyone (including staff) came to school attired in their nightwear to support Pudsey. Even Mrs Robinson and myself were seen to be sporting our “onesies” for the first time. As a tiger and a polar bear we kept order in school very well! If you don’t believe us, Gillian Lunn has the photographic evidence… (Ed - It’s true, I do!) The Diocese Education Team hold their conference just once every eighteen months and this time both myself and Di Robinson were able to attend, along with Reverend John. With so much pressure on schools from Ofsted nowadays, it is good to remember that as Church Schools we have an additional responsibility to our children and we must hold onto this too. It was a good chance to reflect on what we do and how church schools can support each other. All the staff at our school work together so well, supporting and encouraging one another. Recently we have begun to work more closely and more frequently with colleagues in other schools in the area too. Many of our younger teachers have had the chance to meet with their peers in other schools and share good practice. We can always learn from others and it is good to be able to support one another too. The children have been getting out and about for their learning this month too. Y1 and Y2 children had visits to look at the local area on a walk to the Co-op; Y3/4 visited the local area to do some sketching and Y5/6 visited Wynyard Planetarium as a fascinating start to their learning about space. We are always very proud of our children when they go out of school as their behaviour in public is always exemplary and they represent us so well. Mr McCulloch - and the other teachers who support the extra sporting activities in school - have been keeping as busy as usual. We have had athletics and football tournaments recently as well as the clubs for hockey, netball, football and jigging continuing. The end of the month brought one of our annual traditions which help to mark the passing of time so well. Claire Murray came to tell all the children about the Christingle, the service and the work of the Children’s Society. So Advent and Christmas are on their way... By the time you read this, we hope that everyone has had a peaceful and hopeful Christmas time. From children, staff and governors at Richmond Church of England Primary School. Alexa Barber 10

The launch of the app follows that of two others published to support and engage congregations. 'Reflections for Daily Prayer', which offers daily Bible readings, prayer and inspiration, was released on 28 November, and 'The Lectionary' is now available as an app, Kindle e-book or printed booklet. The apps have been developed by the official publisher of the Church of England, Church House Publishing, alongside Aimer Media. Taken from Christianity Today 4/12/13
Children need nature Are your children often outside? Probably not, as a three year study had led the RSPB to conclude that as many as four out of five British children are not ‘connected’ to nature. The charity is concerned, as RSPB’s chief executive Mike Clarke says: “Nature is in trouble and children’s connection to nature is closely linked to this. The recent State of Nature report shows that nature in the UK is being lost at a dramatic rate: 60 per cent of the wildlife species studied have declined over recent decades.” Yet experts say that children need nature: good contact with it can improve their physical health, emotional well-being, and personal and social skills. So why not make 2014 the year when you and the family spent more time in the great outdoors?
Why? A young couple invited some people to dinner. At the table, the mother turned to their six-year-old daughter and said, "Would you like to say the blessing?" "I don’t know what to say," the girl replied. "Just say what you hear Mummy say," the father answered. The daughter bowed her head and said, "O Lord, why on earth did I invite all these people to dinner?" 11
A Message to Our Readers – from the Editor of this Magazine Some of you have noticed a few typos in the magazine now and then. To improve this I am now using a new set of rules for editing. 1. Verbs HAS to agree with their subjects. 2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with. 3. And don't start a sentence with a conjunction. 4. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive. 5. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They're old hat) 6. Also, always avoid annoying alliteration. 7. Be more or less specific. 8. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are (usually) unnecessary. 9. Also too, never, ever use repetitive redundancies. 10. No sentence fragments. 11. Contractions aren't necessary and shouldn't be used. 12. Foreign words and phrases are not apropos. 13. Do not be redundant; do not use more words than necessary; it's highly superfluous. 14. One should NEVER generalise. 15. Comparisons are as bad as cliches. 16. Eschew ampersands & abbreviations, etc. 17. One-word sentences? Eliminate. 18. Analogies in writing are like feathers on a snake. 19. The passive voice is to be ignored. 20. Eliminate commas, that are, not necessary. Parenthetical words however should be enclosed in commas. 21. Never use a big word when a diminutive one would suffice. 22. Use words correctly, irregardless of how others use them. 23. Understatement is always the absolute best way to put forth earth shaking ideas. 24. Eliminate quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "I hate quotations. Tell me what you know." 25. If you've heard it once, you've heard it a thousand times: Resist hyperbole; not one writer in a million can use it correctly. 26. Puns are for children, not groan readers. 27. Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms. 28. Even IF a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed. 29. Who needs rhetorical questions? 30. Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement. And the last one... 31. Proofread carefully to see if you any words out.

Liz Chambers and Margaret Clayson attended a service at Ripon to mark and thank Bishop John and Barbara for their thirteen years with MU and Ripon and Leeds Diocese. Bishop John said “Both of us have gained so much from our thirteen years working and praying with you all. Thank you for all you have given. Now we transfer our membership to the diocese of Newcastle. We look forward, too, to new relationships and opportunities as the Christmas vision of peace, reconciliation and new birth takes us all on into God’s future.” They were presented with a cheque and the promise of a Mary Sumner Rose for their new garden.
Tuesday 3rd December saw a good turnout of
Richmond, Catterick and Appleton Wiske MU friends gather at St Mary’s Church for the MU Deanery Advent Service. There were readings, hymns, and a short homily from Revd John, with prayers from Rev’d Antony, followed by tea and scones in the “Tower Café”. By the time you have read this we should have met on 17th December at 2pm for MU Eucharist and mince pies. Many thanks, Susan Scrafton

FUN-KEY CHURCH @ ST MARY’S RICHMOND
We held our “STIR UP SUNDAY” Fun-Key Church Service on Sunday 24th November at 4pm, when we looked at the origins of Stir Up Sunday (comes from the Book of Common Prayer Collect for the last Sunday before Advent which begins “Stir Up we beseech thee” and acted as a prompt to people at church to go home and make their Christmas Puddings.) We learned that a traditional pudding has 13 ingredients which represent Jesus and the 12 disciples, and you should stir East to West, in response to the Wise Men who travelled from East to West to visit baby Jesus. We sang hymns, songs, and placed our prayers on a prayer tree. We also made wooden spoon people and decorated biscuits with our Fun-Key Logo wafers and other sweets and as Jazz made a pudding, Gillian talked about how perhaps making a pudding reminds us of Jesus! Jesus has many great characteristics, just as a pudding has yummy ingredients. Jesus nature and goodness is very obvious, and ours should be much more obvious. If we put Jesus and God at the centre of our lives and pray and read the Bible, then we can be transformed in to something even more special than we are at the moment, just as an oven transforms ingredients, binds them together and makes something fantastic. To all who come and to all who help THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL OUR HELPERS. More always welcome! Our January Fun-Key Church service will be at 4pm on Sunday 26th when one of the things we will do will eat the pudding that Jazz started in November Fun-Key service. Watch this space for an update and see blogs for images. We were delighted to see more new friends join us in November. Why not come and join us? Fun-Key Church is a very relaxed and informal service, where everyone, whether young or old, on own or with a brood, used to church or never been to church, can come along and take part in the things they feel happy doing and also just sit and be calm and quiet and enjoy the atmosphere with a coffee. It really is fun, faith and fellowship for all ages. See blogs for more images and info http://funkeychurchatstmarysrichmond.wordpress.com/ , find us on Facebook or tweet @fun_keychurch. Losing a spouse or a partner at an early age is a truly devastating experience: Janine's life literally changed overnight when Richard died suddenly by her side, with their children sleeping peacefully in the next bedroom. But she now has a different perspective. 'Grief is a personal journey,' she says, 'an opportunity for growth, and a precious and loving gift from God.'
The Gods of War By Meic Pearse IVP £9.99
It is often claimed that religion is responsible for more wars, more global conflicts and more deaths than any other factor. After all, the world has seen its share of crusades, inquisitions and jihads. Enlightened, modern people assume that if we could only discard primitive religious belief, the world would be a better place. Alas, the picture is not quite so simple. In this provocative book, historian Meic Pearse debunks the common misconception that religion causes war. THE WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY GROUP AT THE LUNN’S AT 2 HURGILL ROAD @ 7.30pm started back mid September and are exploring James, 1 Peter and 2 Peter.
