From Our Curate

July/ August 2014

Having spent the past month in The Parish of Swaledale with Arkengarthdale, on placement with the Rev Caroline Hewlett, I now find myself back on home territory. In the time I was over there I visited numerous people from those communities and found it a great joy to be part of the ministry in those two dales. I have taken part and officiated at the Holy Eucharist, I have taken part in baptisms and weddings and I have also taken part in a funeral service. I was privileged to preach at the Swaledale festival and was joined by our own choir from St Mary’s Richmond, accompanied by our organist Colin Hicks, with Jacob Heringman on Lute and Susanna Pell on Viol. This was a great service and it was good to see within the congregation, members of our own church community, supporting the choir as they brought their gifts of music into the dales The children at the schools also brought joy to me as they reflected on the meaning of Easter and they talked about their thoughts of the ascension and what those events might signify for them. They had just finished a lesson looking at pilgrimage and how life’s pilgrimage might affect them. Was it good to follow, was it good to be guided, were both aspects of following and been guided necessary and where might God fit into that pilgrimage? The children’s answers were very thought provoking and it was good to hear them discuss elements of the Christian faith that were a part of their life experience and part of their journey, their pilgrimage of life. As we think of our own life pilgrimage, I begin to wonder what we might change. There are many life experiences that on reflection we may think, if only we had done this or that but in reality we are where we are and we have done what we have done, what is relevant is that we learn from life’s journey and use those experiences to grow in 4

wisdom and understanding and to further our faith as we place our trust and hope in God, who calls each one of us back to himself and offers us the opportunity to walk with him by our side. Today I thank God for my life journey, some of it has been difficult, some of it has been a joy but as I reflect on the up’s and down’s of life, I give thanks for those who have walked with me, those who have influenced and inspired me, those who have made such a great difference to my outlook on life. Each one of you have become part of my journey and as I prepare to look for where God may call me and my family next, I thank you for your part, in that we were able to walk the journey together with God holding us in his hands. I pray for you and I hope you may pray for me and my family as we search for where God may be calling us to serve him on the next part of our pilgrimage of life. Every Blessing Antony.

NEW DEAN John Dobson (49) who until recently was a vicar and Area Dean in the Diocese of Durham has become the Dean of Ripon at a service (Saturday June 14th, 2014) led by the Bishop of Knaresborough, the Rt Revd James Bell. He was welcomed to the city by a packed Cathedral including civic and community leaders, and clergy and lay people from across the new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales. The Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, civic and community leaders as well as representatives of the armed forces swelled the large congregation which also included former parishioners and colleagues of the Very Revd John Dobson from the Diocese of Durham.

NEW DIOCESE AND BISHOP NICK’S INAUGURATION The new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales was inaugurated by Archbishop Sentamu of York on Sunday 7th June 2014 in a Pentecost Eucharist service at York Minster. At the same service, the election of Nick Baines as Bishop of Leeds, the Diocesan Bishop of West Yorkshire and the Dales, was also confirmed. Sub-Dean of Ripon, Canon Keith Punshon, together with the Deans of Wakefield and Bradford, participated in the legal part of the service when they received a Mandate from the Archbishop to enthrone Bishop Nick in each of their Cathedral Churches. This triple enthronement in July will complete the legal process by which Nick Baines takes possession of the Bishopric of Leeds.

Staff Several years ago the then Bishop of London reported to the General Synod that before attending a church function he had said he would bring his pastoral staff. “And how many seats will you want?” came the reply. The nervous nun “People get nervous when they think they have to call me ‘my Lord’, said an Irish bishop. “Especially the poor nuns. One was giving me a cup of coffee. As she pushed the sugar bowl towards me she said, ‘How many lords, my lump?’” 10

Three Cathedrals join in a day of prayer for their Bishop Ripon Cathedral’s is to offer prayer stations as part of a Day of Prayer for the new Great Yorkshire Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales, and, in particular, for its Bishop, Nick Baines, as he prepares to be enthroned in all three Cathedrals of the new Diocese. On 12th July, the Saturday before Bishop Nick Baines is enthroned in each of the three Cathedrals of the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales, the Cathedrals of Ripon, Bradford and Wakefield are each holding a Day of Prayer for Bishop Nick and for the new Diocese. In Ripon this will take the form of a series of prayer stations which will be available from 10 am to 4 pm. There will be the opportunity for quiet, personal prayer in the Chapel of the Resurrection and a series of interactive stations focussing on Bishop Nick and his ministry as Chief Shepherd; on the parishes and Deaneries of the whole Diocese; on our own part in the journey to this point and onwards from here; on our dreams and hopes for the future and on our mission to the world around us. Worshippers from all over the Diocese, visitors and members of the public will be most welcome to join in, whether for 10 minutes, an hour or for the whole day. Canon John Dobson, Dean of Ripon says, “I look forward to welcoming friends old and new to Ripon Cathedral for this Day of Prayer. Together with our sister Cathedrals in Wakefield and Bradford, we want to provide an opportunity to surround the new Diocese and Bishop Nick in prayer right from the start. Everyone is very welcome to pop in throughout the day and help the new Diocese commit itself prayerfully to making the love of God a reality for the people of West Yorkshire and the Dales.” Bishop Nick Baines will be enthroned in the week following the day of prayer: at Wakefield Cathedral on Tuesday 15th July, Bradford Cathedral on Thursday 17th July and in Ripon Cathedral on Sunday 20th July. Admission to these services will be by invitation only.

Perhaps the straight and narrow path would be wider if more people used it. Kay Ingram God enters by a private door into every individual. Anon 11

Knitter of Fate After the spectacle comes the spectacular! Six large scale outdoor theatre performances of Blame it on Bartle! presented by North Country Theatre , the people of Swaledale, Wensleydale and Gudbrandsdalen [ Norway ] with live music, giant puppets, dancing and plenty of action and entertainment. As the Tour de France cyclists pedal out of Richmondshire the stages will be put up for this amazing tale of trolls, trials and tribulation plus Wensleydale’s own version of the Wicker-man. Blame it on Bartle! starts at Richmond Castle on 10th & 11th July before moving up the dale to Grinton Lodge on 13th then across into Wensleydale with performances at Castle Bolton on 17th and Kiplin Hall on 19th and 20th. After two years of research and workshops, over 40 performers will create this spectacular theatrical event, with a live band, English and Norwegian folk dancing and mad cap chases across the crags. Watch as the giant Knitter of Fate’s tries to unravel the blame game that develops in the lead mining communities of the early 19th century, join in the fun and celebrations of Reeth Bartle Fair and discover what horrors lurk deep in the mines. Written by Nobby Dimon this is the fourth Richmondshire Community play developed by North Country Theatre [you may remember The Passion Plays [2002] and Mak the Sheepstealer [2006 with the ‘flash mob choir’] that were performed in St Mary’s. The plays give amateur performers a unique opportunity to work alongside professional actors and musicians under the direction of a professional director. Taking the idea of a ‘Peer Gynt for the Dales’, the company have linked up with Richmond ’s twin town of Nord Fron Kommune in Norway [home to the Peer Gynt legend] and collaborated with Peer Gynt Teater to bring over seven young performers to be part of the production. All venues open early for people to picnic before the start of the performances which begin at 7.30 [except for Grinton which is a 7.00 start]. People need to bring their own seating and dress for an outdoor performance. More information and tickets can be found at www.northcountrytheatre.com or by telephoning 01748 825288. 12

A Child in World War One Dad, head of the house, hardly home, at work all day. Brothers and sisters, I have seven. Mum seems sad. Dad’s gone to war! Long wooden benches, desks attached. Children of all ages in one class. Dinner time what will it be? Pea soup and bread followed by fruit pudding. I don’t like that! Weed and dig it’s what we do. Carrots and potatoes, onions too. That’s what we grew. The fields are full it’s harvest time. Let’s go help! Lemonade and ginger beer bubbly in my tummy. Boiled bacon and potatoes it must be Sunday. Pear drops, toffee sticks and chocolate bars. How rare they are, what a treat! Snakes and ladders shake and throw the dice. Wooden hoops and skipping ropes. A new game, Blow Football. I wonder what it’s like. Written by Luke Knights Richmond C of E Primary School

The Tour de France… is alive and well in Richmond! St Mary’s Church, Richmond, is festooned with bunting made by more than five hundred students from Richmond School, Richmond Methodist Primary, Richmond C of E Primary and the 1st Richmond Beaver Scouts. They are in the colours of the tops that winners of different categories of the race wear. The effort was co-ordinated by Scott Lunn in time for Richmond Meet and will now stay up in the church until after the Grand Depart weekend, July 5th and 6th. There are also 31 wooden sheep painted (many by the Little Lunns) by Richmond School students as part of a round the town quiz (included in this magazine). The quiz can be returned to Scott, to the library or to the Castle after the Tour de France.

As I am sure I have mentioned before, our school year has a distinctive pattern to it, but it seems that every term and every month are busy! The summer term and the months of May and June are no exceptions. It is a very important time for our oldest children in Year 6, as they complete their national tests (SATs). They – and their teachers – had worked very hard all year and they had their chance to prove themselves in just a few hours in May! We await their results with excitement and just a few nerves, but confident that whatever these results may look like, the children worked hard and did their best. Just before the half term holiday we received the news of the latest baby in our school family – Mrs Goundry gave birth to a healthy bouncing baby girl, Emily Rose. We are looking forward to meeting her when she comes to visit. Around the same time, we welcomed the ex-Miss Glansford (now Mrs Barraclough) back to school following her maternity leave. She is currently working in lots of different classes across school but especially using her expertise to work with children in Key Stage One. We have some new staff joining us too this term – Mrs Sharon McCormack and Miss Sam Whalin join our fantastic Midday Supervisory Assistant (dinnerladies in other words!) team. Both these ladies have other connections with school so it’s even more special to welcome them to their new roles and have them even more involved. The second half term saw the whole school joining together for their learning topic; and, of course, there was only one it could be – the Tour de France! Along with the whole of Richmond we are surrounded by bikes, yellow jerseys and anything French. We have learnt so much already. The amazing stunt bicycle riders from 360 thrilled and wowed us with their brilliant bike skills and inspired many children I’m sure. This is also the time of year when we begin to think about the new children who will be joining us in September. Foundation Stage held welcome meetings for the children who will be joining us for the very first time in Foundation Stage 1 (nursery) and those who will start “proper” school in Foundation Stage 2 – reception. It’s always very exciting to see these little ones at the very start of their school life with us. Di Robinson, our head teacher, and I were delighted to be invited to be among some members of St Mary’s at the inauguration of the diocese’s new bishop at York Minster early in June. We found it a very moving and special occasion and it gave us one of those rare experiences of really feeling part of the huge family of Church of England schools to which we belong. Mr McCulloch and a number of staff are very keen sports people and they make sure that we all have lots of great experiences. As well as organising various clubs and matches – I have to confess to losing track of all the things we keep winning! – many events are put on in school too. Many of us joined in “Skip to be Fit” and had great fun warming up to music and skipping to beat our own personal targets. Watch out for various children (and adults...) around Richmond with their special skipping ropes with counters on the handles, while everyone tries to get even better. We also joined in with the Speedmark Challenge – scoring goals into an inflatable net to raise money for a sports fun day at school. 16

Friends of Richmond Church of England Primary (FORCE) have their biggest fund-raiser of the year in June with their Summer Fair. This year they raised more than £3000 which was a brilliant result. We must thank this small group of very hard working and dedicated parents who give up a lot of their time to help organise these events which raise money for many, many activities and resources in school – drama workshops, visits, new hall curtains, year books etc. What would we do without them? We hope that everyone has a lovely sunny summer, giving us warmth, rest and re-creation ready for the new school year. Alexa Barber

FUN-KEY CHURCH @ ST MARY’S RICHMOND There is NO Fun-Key Church service in July, but we will meet again on Sunday 31st August at 4pm.

Replica of Bede’s Bible returns home to Jarrow after more than 1,000 years The only full-sized replica of the illustrated 7th century Codex Amiatinus, which was made by the Venerable Bede at Monkwearmouth-Jarrow Priory, has gone on display at Bede’s World. Written in the monastic scriptorium in the 7th Century, the Codex Amiatinus was one of three single volume Bibles made at Wearmouth-Jarrow. It was made by monks under the direction of Abbot Ceolfrith, who started the project in AD692. The oldest complete Latin Bible in existence, it was rare to make a single volume Bible. It is considered one of the most important copies of the Bible in the world, and one of the most important manuscripts made in the British Isles. The Codex Amiatinus weighs more than 34kg (75lbs) and each page is made from vellum which would have come from hundreds of calf hides. Order at: www.biblesociety.org.uk/products Goodbye Pink Room – Rose’s story By Jane Grayshon, Lion, £8.99 When Rose was warned by her mother to keep away from men who hid behind bushes and did unspeakable things to children, she was very careful to check behind every bush. But when her parents encouraged her to go on frequent trips with family friend, Uncle George, that was different – wasn’t it? Rose loved to be filmed dancing – until he showed her the film, which looked rude. Suddenly Uncle George was asking what Mummy would say if she saw it. He said he’d keep it secret, as long as Rose did everything he expected… and as his demands grew, so Rose was plunged into a terrifying and painful world. Only when she reached mid-life, and with support, was she able to face what had happened in order to find hope for the future. Written almost entirely from the child’s perspective, this remarkable true story gives unique insight into how abusers gain control of children and their families – and why children often cannot speak up.
