From The Rectory

June 2014

Two pieces of writing are staring at me from my desk as I sit here pondering on Pentecost and what it means to us today. One is the analogy of the Holy Spirit used in the Nelson Word Youth Bible as the ‘live rail’, which powers the London Underground. There are currently 274 open stations and over 253 miles (408 km) of active lines, with three million passenger journeys made each day (948 million journeys made 2003–2004); “Without the live rail’s power, the whole system fails, and London is thrown into chaos. Every day the successful operation of the underground system depends on the power of the live rail. Just as the live rail is the underground’s source of power, so the Holy Spirit is the source of power for Christians. As we connect with the Spirit, we have the power we need to live the Christian life.” The other piece of writing is the book by Richard Holloway & Brice Avery – ‘Churches and How to Survive Them’. Richard Holloway is a former Bishop of Edinburgh and Brice Avery is an adult psychoanalytical psychotherapist. One of the chapters is headed “The Unbearable Feeling of Stuckness” and in it Brice maintains that this stuckness is a feeling of going nowhere. He goes on to say that “our going nowhere might involve plenty of activity and general thrashing about, but frustration at our lack of progress may be the only tangible result. Some sort of conflict is sure to lurk at the bottom of it.” At Pentecost the disciples were powered up by the Holy Spirit. They became unstuck from their feelings of frustration and hopelessness at the death of their Lord. Continuing the analogy of the London tube system, their power line became live and they were energised and empowered to move forward. May we be energised by the birth of the new diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales. On 20th April, 2014, the Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales was created. On Pentecost Sunday, 8th June, 2014, the Inauguration and Confirmation of Election of the Diocesan Bishop for the new diocese will take place at 4pm in York Minster.

4

We are now part of a family which has 656 churches, 248 church schools, 496 clergy, 5 bishops, 3 cathedrals, 45,000 regular worshippers. Whilst there will be times when we think about the challenges of such a large family, let us not forget that we are part of the launch of the first new diocese created in 85 years. Let us look forward to working and worshipping together within the new archdeaconry of Richmond & Craven under our Archdeacon Paul Slater. Change of this nature can be regarded in many ways and I have already been treated to the more negative responses e.g. “what an expensive waste of time and resource”, “totally irrelevant to us up here in the Dales” etc. I would encourage you to think of the disciples who were powered by the Holy Spirit, re-energised to go out in his name and move forward. This Pentecost, may our prayer be that our own individual power line and the power line of the churches in the new diocese be empowered and energised by the power of the Holy Spirit to move forward and remain free from any feeling of ‘stuckness’. Yours in Christ Revd John

CONFIRMATION On Sunday, 23rd November we welcome Bishop James to our 10:00am service which will be Confirmation and Eucharist. If you are considering confirmation and would like to know more, please contact the Rector. Preparation classes for both adults and young people will commence in June. 5

This next one… A local DJ was introducing a record at our annual church fete/parish party. "This next one," he said, "is for Charlotte Burke, a choir member, who is a hundred and eleven! Hey, Charlotte, congratulations on a ripe old age!" There was a short pause and then the DJ said in a somewhat more subdued voice, "I'm sorry, I got it wrong. This next one is for Charlotte Burke, who is ill."

‘Venture’ leaders needed CPAS is wondering if you could help them this summer. “We have the unusual challenge this year of Ventures with plenty of members, but not enough leaders to be able to run them!” Could you give up a few days during the period of 26 July to 10 August to be part of a team running a life-changing holiday for children or young people? CPAS badly wants to hear from you if you can peel a potato, lead a game or just don’t mind mucking in for a few days. South Tees Port Chaplaincy Apostleship of the Sea

Mission to Seafarers

‘Stella Maris’

‘The Flying Angel’

Come and Join us Teesport is currently the third largest port in the United Kingdom, and amongst the ten biggest in Western Europe, handling over 4500 ships and 36 million tonnes of domestic and international cargo per year. It is important to the Steel, Potash, Container, Oil, Chemical, Mineral, Wood and Aggregate Industries. Tesco and Asda have large warehouse facilities here. All the vessels which visit the Tees are crewed by seafarers, over 3,000 each year. They are ordinary people like you and me, with family and friends, needs, worries and concerns, but unlike us, they are in a foreign land where they are strangers and do not always feel safe. Their jobs are hard and dangerous, they work long hours, and they are away from home for many weeks or months. It can be a lonely and isolated life, particularly when there is no one with whom to share a worry or a concern, nobody who can help. This is where the Mission to Seafarers and the Apostleship of the Sea come in with a dedicated club for seafarers just on the edge of Tees Dock. Our club is open every single night of the year from 7 pm to 10 30 pm where we have a minibus and driver and volunteers on hand to serve the seafarers who need us. We transport seafarers in our minibus to and from the Club and to local supermarkets and facilities. We ensure they have access to computers, can use their own lap tops, can Skype home, can make telephone calls, exchange currency. The main thing is we communicate with them and they communicate with us and with their families at home. We have a range of confectionery and snacks to sell, toiletries, free books, Bibles and clothing, pool, darts, a television, a bar. Very importantly we can offer them the peace and quiet of our beautiful Chapel and access to our Chaplains and visitors whom they will also have seen on their ships. We take them away from the stress of the ship and their working lives. The Mission to Seafarers and Apostleship of the Sea are looking for volunteers who are prepared to make an ongoing contribution to their work with seafarers who visit Teesport. Working on a rota basis, volunteers are needed to help run the Seafarers’ Club. In addition volunteer drivers are needed to drive the Mission minibus on a pre-scheduled run around the dock to collect and drop off seafarers, plus any additional journeys that may be required. We do not expect volunteers to over commit, even one evening a month would make a huge difference to our volunteer base and would be most welcome. We take volunteering seriously. We train our drivers to the MIDAS standard, we train those who work in the Club. We offer expenses to travel to and fro the Club and we operate a health and safety policy and treat our volunteers as part of an integrated team with different skills to offer. We do not have any paid staff, everyone who operates the Club is a volunteer, whether we are working in the Club, or performing all back room functions of a small business open in a daily basis. Volunteering is enjoyable and puts a smile on your face too when you see seafarers happy and relaxed. It is good fun to meet and work with other volunteers, as well as meeting many interesting seafarers from all parts of the globe and hearing about lifestyles very different to our own. It is a unique area of work and constantly changing, no two days are alike. If you would like to come and see what we do, please use the contact below and we will arrange to meet and chat. Alèxe Finlay (Roberts)

Church plans for 1,000 poppies to bloom for the Great War Centenary Poppies were grown in the grounds of parish churches and Church of England schools across the country as an act of remembrance for the centenary of World War 1 by the Church of England. The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have both urged church schools and churches to plant poppy seeds with them this Spring, to commemorate the centenary of World War l and help make the country awash with poppies. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby , in an Instagram message, urges people to plant the seeds ‘to remember the terrible events of the First World War and as a sign of our hope in Jesus Christ for peace in the future.’ The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu welcomed the poppy planting initiative and said: "I encourage parishes and church schools across the country to join together to make many thousand flowers bloom as a tribute to the sacrifice of past generations Here in the grounds of Bishopthorpe, we too, are getting behind this community initiative. I have been inspired by the parishes of the new Diocese of Leeds (West Yorkshire and the Dales) and their shared efforts to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great War." Some dioceses – like Oxford, Exeter, Manchester and the new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales - sent packets of poppy seeds to all their churches and/or church schools to create their own memorial gardens or flower pots. The Rt Revd Nick Baines, the new bishop designate for the new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales said: “Only 100 years ago the world fell apart in the most violent way. This simple act of growing poppies reminds us of our past and is a very visual way of pledging ourselves to serve together in the future.” Packs of Flanders poppies are on sale and can be bought at B&Q for £2 with a pound being donated to the Royal British Legion. Ed: please see Richmond C of E Primary page To bee or not to bee This summer, spare a thought for the bees who visit your garden. What will they find there to eat? Albert Einstein once said that mankind cannot live without bees, such is their importance in the survival of the global ecosystem. For bees do far more than make honey – they pollinate more than 90 crops that we rely on for food, including apples, pears, blueberries, tomatoes and strawberries. In recent years, the bee population has plummeted. Attacks by varroa mite, the overuse of pesticide and herbicides, combined with intensive farming, is thought to have killed millions. What can we do to help, in even a small way? Plant some traditional cottage garden favourites such as rosemary, lavender, bluebells, foxglove, comfrey and viper’s bugloss in your garden – all of which bees love. Bee welcoming in your garden!

The month of April was one of mainly holiday for the pupils and staff at Richmond Church of England Primary School, so we all returned to school feeling refreshed and ready for new challenges. Amongst the staff we have one new face – Miss West – who is covering for Mrs Goundry’s maternity leave, and a familiar face returned with Miss Andrews, who is now teaching the Y1/2 class on her return from maternity leave. It’s lovely to have them both with us. Our new half term has a new collective worship theme which is “Courage and Bravery”. With many events commemorating the start of the First World War, we felt that this would be a good way to talk to children about subject. We joined together with all the Church schools in the new Diocese with a poppy planting on the last day of April. Mr Gatman and his gardening club took charge and hopefully in a few weeks there will be a carpet of red poppies outside the front of the school building to mark our recognition of the special date. The children were also interviewed for local radio – fame at last!

As a way of making the events of since a distant war a little more meaningful for the children, Mrs Kettlewell had organised for people from the Green Howards Museum to bring a range of artefacts into school. All but the youngest children had the opportunity to explore and handle these and enjoyed finding out more about what life might have been like for soldiers at that time. Mr McCulloch continued to make further strides forward with the school’s sporting reputation at the end of the month. He put together two teams for the local schools’ swimming gala and we achieved second place – just a couple of points behind the leaders. As the team had not had the opportunity to do any training or preparation beforehand, they were all delighted with the result. One valiant member even took part in the butterfly race – never having tried the stroke before! True bravery and courage! Everyone at school joins with me in wishing everyone in the parish a happy and healthy spring and summer. Alexa Barber

REALLY ? Tracey Prentice has helped as a volunteer at the Keswick Convention for the past 15 years and Angela Dickinson asked her about it. Tracey: I am amazed that more people from Richmond don’t go to the Keswick Convention. Angela: Why would they want to do that? Tracey: To connect to the family. We have a great God and we all belong to a huge family. Angela: So how many people attend? Tracey: Probably about ten thousand in all. The main tent allows for three and a half thousand (more before the intervention of health and safety). There is often an overflow watching on a screen. Angela: Is the Convention just for Anglicans? Tracey: No. It’s for all denominations. Angela: Are most people British? Tracey: No there are people from all nationalities and even the speakers are of different nationalities. Provision is made for those with disabilities, for the deaf (sign language) the blind, those in wheelchairs and those with learning difficulties. The quality of teaching is excellent and there is an opportunity to speak personally with the speakers afterwards. Then there are different programmes for children of all ages. Angela: As a volunteer what do you do? Tracey: Our day begins at 7am. I work as a steward. We have special coloured jackets. There are 5 teams with 4-7 members in each. During the meetings, we show people to their seats and to the toilet. We keep a watchful eye to make sure that no one is in distress. Angela: A bit like a lifeguard at a swimming pool. Tracey: Exactly. Then we tidy up after the meetings. We live on the site so we have to do the house-keeping for the site. We set up the table for the speakers and volunteer helpers who all eat together. The cooks feed us well --- probably too well! Angela: What time do you finish? Tracey: When I was deputy chief steward I had to lock up finally and that was about 11.30pm. I’m not going to do that this year though so it will be 9.30-10pm. You have two hours off during the day and one day off per week. Angela: That sounds like seriously hard work. What have been special moments for you? Tracey: John Stott in his final ministry when he who had been so tall and imposing was so frail and needed so much support. It was humbling. And Ann Graham Lotz, daughter of Billy Graham and according to her father, the better preacher. She spoke powerfully about God using her in the very normal ordinary things of life. And there have been truly amazing times of worship. We do indeed have a mighty God. Angela: Tracey, thank you so much for sharing. Keswick Convention runs from July 12th- August 1st 2014 and the theme this year is “Really”? Christians together in Richmond are considering going for a day by coach on Wednesday 16th July. FUN-KEY CHURCH @ ST MARY’S RICHMOND Our May Fun-Key Church service was on Sunday 25th when we looked at Ascension. Fun-Key Church is a very relaxed and informal service, where everyone, whether young or old, on own or with a brood, used to church or never been to church, can come along and take part in the things they feel happy doing and also just sit and be calm and quiet and enjoy the atmosphere with a coffee. It really is fun, faith and fellowship for all ages. See blogs for more images and info http://funkeychurchatstmarysrichmond.wordpress.com/ , find us on Facebook or tweet @fun_keychurch. Gillian 07592016476 Helpers are always welcome, and as Fun-Key Church is for all ages and not just for children, if you are perhaps concerned that you might “not be good with children” then fear not, there are many more adults than children! NEXT SERVICE IS SUNDAY 29TH JUNE 2014 @ 4PM when it will be our annual Pet Service. This is a special service when people bring their own or borrow a pet and thank God for their loyalty, friendship and love. Fun, Faith and Fellowship for All Ages

DIY Our churchwarden has the courage, but not always the skills, to tackle any DIY job that needs doing around the church. For example, in the church shed are still pieces of the church lawn mower she once tried to fix. So our vicar wasn’t surprised the day he found her in the vestry, attacking the vacuum cleaner with a screwdriver. "This thing won’t cooperate," she complained. The vicar thought for a moment: "Why don’t you drag it out to the shed and show it what you did to the lawn mower?"

STOREHOUSE Thank you to all who support the Storehouse Foodbank with donations left in the large box at the back of church. Your contributions of in date food are much appreciated.

Love So Amazing 40 reflections on my favourite hymns By Pam Rhodes, LionHudson, £9.99 Pam Rhodes is the presenter of the world’s number one religious television programme, ‘Songs of Praise’. Here she brings together her meditations on 40 of her favourite hymns, reflecting on the story behind them and their meaning. Each meditation concludes with a brief prayer. Pam writes, “Hymns are prayers in our pockets, a spiritual first aid kit that has its home amongst our memories. Hymns speak to us and for us, heart to heart, soul to soul, connecting us in fellow feeling to the writer, whoever they were and whenever they wrote.” The words of the great hymns aren’t always cosy and comfortable. They remind us of the true demands of the Christian life. They spur us on to react and respond. Most of all, they remind us of the Almighty God who created the heavens and earth in all their vastness and complexity, but who also created us to be unique and precious through His divine and amazing love.

Dear Heavenly Father, We all come from different places, a bit like that crowd on the first day of Pentecost. We are from different backgrounds, with different experiences that form us. I can’t be just like somebody else and no one else can be just like me. Thank you for the gift of your Holy Spirit to speak and reveal your will to us in a way that is personal and unique. Help us to be open to receive him every day. Please go on filling us with your Spirit Lord, that we might be effective witnesses to Jesus our Lord and Saviour. In his name, Amen. A prayer by Daphne Kitching
