From Our Curate

March 2014

As we enter into the period of Lent we enter into a period of joy and of sadness. By nature we often relate more closely to the trials of life than to life’s joys, recognising them much quicker and pondering them for longer periods of time. As the people of God, the body of Christ, the church, it may be a good idea to reverse the trend and ponder on the joy instead of the sadness of life. Having said that some things in life come only through pain and trial, for example the birth of a child. In reality some of the good things in life come through pain. Some of the Jewish scriptures point to the birth-pangs of the new age, an age which came through the death of Christ on the cross. The crucifixion of Jesus is not looked upon by the church and the New Testament writers as failure, but rather it is recognised as the victory through which the resurrection was born. On the cross Jesus carries the sin of the world, not only does he carry the sin of the world but he conquers it for all times. To those of no faith the cross may appear as defeat but to those of faith the cross becomes the victory, because on it, evil is defeated, it is absorbed, it is quenched. Jesus on the cross brings God close to us. We recall the Centurion standing at the foot of the cross, looking into the eyes of Jesus as he breathed his last breath. The Centurion said, “Truly this man was God’s Son.” Here we have a response which comes through the bearing of evil on the cross. It is difficult to make sense of all this, but it was through Jesus bearing the pain and the sin of the world, that the Centurion recognises who Jesus was and what had been made possible through his pain, the salvation of mankind. 4

As we go through life we begin to recognise that joy can be found in the most unlikely places. The centurion found God at the foot of the cross; if like the centurion we can learn to rejoice at the cross then we may be able to rejoice at other places too, giving thanks for the blessings of life and the gifts that we receive through the grace of God. Throughout Lent we are called to ponder the death of Christ, to look at the significance and meaning of the pain that Jesus took upon himself for each one of us, so that on Easter Sunday we can celebrate the Eucharist with greater understanding, knowing that it is set in the reality of daily life. Our planned Lent groups are an opportunity to look deeper at our understanding and to pray that we may find God, not only in the joys of life but also in its struggles and its pains. You may decide to join one of the groups as your Lent discipline. (please see Page 9 for further information) God’s kingdom is not something of the future but is already here and present because we live in the salvation of the cross and the resurrection of Christ. In Christ all things are new and in the sacraments of the church we are reminded of this. As Christians we are required to see things differently to find God in the most unexpected places of life. If we fail to look we will not see, so let’s look at the cross afresh, recognising that it is empowering and has the potential to transform life as it did for that centurion who through it recognised the son of God. Every Blessing. Antony.

FUN-KEY CHURCH @ ST MARY’S RICHMOND

Our February Fun-Key Church service was on Sunday 23rd when we looked at worry—all ages looked at how when we are worried sharing with God helped a lot. We acknowledged sometimes there are no apparent answers but knowing God is journeying with us is very reassuring. Fun-Key Church is a very relaxed and informal service, where everyone, whether young or old, on own or with a brood, used to church or never been to church, can come along and take part in the things they feel happy doing and also just sit and be calm and quiet and enjoy the atmosphere with a coffee. It really is fun, faith and fellowship for all ages. See blogs for more images and info http://funkeychurchatstmarysrichmond.wordpress.com/ , find us on Facebook or tweet 9 @fun_keychurch. Women's World Day of Prayer Friday 7th March 2014 2PM Richmond Methodist Church WWDP is an interdenominational service and this year the title is “Streams in the Desert” prepared by Christian women of Egypt.

The literacy rate in 2010 was 72%: 80% for males but only 63% for females. Women may work outside the home, go to school and university and vote and run in all elections, but in education and the labour market they still lag behind. Millions of children are born into poverty. Many rural adolescent girls are discouraged from completing school, facing lives of early marriage, illiteracy and domestic abuse. The Church in Egypt is doing all it can to counteract this. DAYOUT! is a day that everyone linked to a church can enjoy. It will be in Harrogate - a place people really do come to for a good day out! Every church can bring people to be together, have a picnic or lunch out in a café and try out at least one new experience each to reflect on back home. This is a day to share with your family! You can all enjoy Harrogate’s beautiful park (adventure playground/skate park/ crazy golf/small boating lake/Pine Woods/flowers/views), the Stray or go shopping. Some or all of your day can be spent experiencing Messy Church, Sweaty Church, Café Church, Mission Action Planning, Rural Festival Planning, Forest Church, Flashmob Choir, Interactive Street Art or see the programme online!) Most sessions will be run by over one hundred volunteers just as they are at home in churches from our Diocese. You choose your own busy or lazy programme! St Peter’s (pictured) will be a central prayer zone and other church buildings will host other sessions and experiences. As mission comes from the heart of God, the prayer zone is the one place everyone should experience during the day, even if it is just for twenty minutes. Reservations for individual experiences can be made on Eventbrite from the link on the website www.visionformission.info, so if there is something particular you want to make sure you have a space for, please use that facility. Use Eventbrite to get a general ticket even if you don’t know exactly what you will pop into yet. Act now to book the date in your diary, free up your church leaders and think about how you are going to enjoy yourself on June 14th. See you there! Karin Shaw 11

Teacher Debbie’s first graders were discussing a picture of a family. One little boy in the picture had a different hair color than the other members. One of her students suggested that he was adopted. A little girl said, 'I know all about Adoption, I was adopted..' 'What does it mean to be adopted?', asked another child. 'It means', said the girl, 'that you grew in your mommy's heart instead of her tummy!'

January brings the snow, makes our feet and fingers glow...... Well it didn’t and they didn’t - thankfully! A milder month than we usually experience meant that the weather didn’t affect our plans for the start of this term. All children and staff were back to school after a good Christmas break and ready for all the challenges 2014 will bring. With a new year we have a new theme for Collective Worship which is “Going for Goals” and we are thinking about motivation – what keeps us going towards those goals. As we approach the half point of the year it is a good time to review where we are headed, ensuring we are still on course and reminding ourselves of our reasons for keeping on. As usual a range of different people lead Collective Worship in school – members of staff, members of the Parish clergy as well as visitors from the Influence Church. School clubs are popular all year round and this term children are choosing from football, ICT, gardening club, singing club and jigging as well at gymnastics club, being run by a member of staff from Richmond school. Children can even come along to homework club to get a head start on that extra work! Last term’s football club produced a great sporting team of Y5/6 boys who went on to win the trophy in the Swaledale League. They were subsequently invited to take part in the County Finals along with 10 other teams and I am delighted to tell you that they were runners up, only losing in the final 2-1 to a school from York. Mr McCulloch and volunteer coach, Mr Newcombe did a great job with these boys and we are really proud of them all!

Mr McCulloch, Mr Newcombe and the boys from Y5-6 Squad New Year means new topics for each year group’s learning. Year Five and Six are finding out about World War two and spent a great day at Eden Camp learning about the Blitz, the blackout, and rationing. Children in Year Three and Four are learning about the Tudors – they especially enjoy the gory bits! And Year One and Two are finding out about castles. Foundation Stage are choosing different themes, according to the children’s interests and they had a wonderful time at the end of the month, celebrating Chinese New Year – complete with dancing dragon and a Chinese take-away in the role-play area! Lee Anne Taylor, who has been with us as a teaching assistant since 2008, has recently taken maternity leave, awaiting the birth of her baby boy (number 12 for the school in the past 6 years!). We welcome Sue Friend who will be filling Miss Taylor’s shoes for the next few months. A new venture for our school this term has been the events we have put on for parents and children together to find out more about maths and English in school. We held two events in January and it was great to see so many parents learning from their children through the games we use to do maths and English. I think they all enjoyed the food supplied by our brilliant school kitchen team – Steph and Jayne – too. They were definitely successful evenings and something we hope to repeat. Good wishes to all the Parish from governors, staff and children at Richmond Church of England Primary School. Alexa Barber 13

Mothers Union Christmas Party We welcomed thirty members and friends to our afternoon party and what a wonderful afternoon we had, following our opening service we were entertained with music songs poems and Steves jokes! We all enjoyed singing along and it was lovely to be joined by residents of Greyfriars. We had to keep bringing in more chairs as people joined us. After such wonderful entertainment we all enjoyed a scrumptious tea and we are all most grateful to Freda, Tony, Steve and Mark for giving of their time and talents Our meeting in March will be held at Greyfriars on Tuesday 25 th March at 2pm when Gillian Lunn will be speaking on A Reader in Training. Gillian is currently on a Reader training course and this will be a chance to have an insight into what is involved in becoming a Reader in the Church of England (and a brief update on Fun-Key Church). Make a Mothers Day. The Mothers Union are asking for anyone who would like to make a donation in memory of their Mother to take note of the leaflets at the back of Church. If you wish your Mother’s name can be put in the Book of Remembrance in the Mothers Union Chapel at Mary Sumner House in London. To give a donation or for any more information please speak to Margaret Clayson at 8 o`clock or Liz Chambers or Susan Scrafton at 10 o`clock. A date for your diary our annual family BBQ will take place on Friday 4 th July 6-30pm onwards every one most welcome. Susan Scrafton

Richmond is holding a sponsored sleep out on the night of 4th April 2014, in aid of the local youth homelessness charity SASH (Safe and Sound Homes). SASH prevents vulnerable young people from becoming homeless by offering them a room in a volunteer’s home, giving them a safe place to stay for a few nights while they access the help they need. It operates across North Yorkshire, York and the East Riding. You can find out more

at www.sash-uk.org.uk. The Richmond SASH Sleepout follows similar successful and safely-run sleepouts in previous years at Northallerton, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and York.

The aims of this community event are to: • Raise awareness of youth homelessness in Richmondshire and across North Yorkshire • Raise funds so SASH can continue to meet the growing demand for this ‘Nightstop’ service. Participants will sleep in the grounds of St Marys Church. The church will be open all night for toilets, hot drinks and emergencies, and breakfast will be provided the next morning. Anyone can take part, so long as you are fit and healthy and willing to sacrifice your warm beds for one night. Under-17s must be accompanied by a responsible adult. All participants must register with the organisers, for the safe and sensible running of the event. We welcome groups taking part – group leaders may wish to make their own arrangements and register the group as a whole. Please let us know in good time so we can support you with all the information you need. We are starting to compile lists of those willing and wishing to play an active part in this event. We are looking for those wishing to do the sleepout, and or those wishing to do a stint as watchmen, and or those willing to help with publicity, and or those able to help with fundraising. Please contact Scott or Scott via Gillian asap if you are interested, and please please spread the word. Cleaning Roster 2014 First my thanks go to all those 27 who turned up to give the church a really good spit(!) and polish in December ready for Christmas. It only took 3 hours to do the whole thing because of all the support. Because this worked so well and assuming that people prefer this more sociable way of doing the cleaning it has been decided that for the rest of the year the cleaning roster will be suspended and will be replaced by occasional “Blitz” sessions three or four times in the course of the year. Pre Easter, pre Patronal and pre Christmas are the likely times and actual dates will be announced in due course. Watch the Parish magazine and the pew leaflets for details. Ann McDonald

FLOWERS FOR OUR EASTER CELEBRATIONS We are closely watching the daffodils, which feature with lilies in our Eastertide decoration of the church. We have had mild spells and sudden blasts of frost, making the growing season difficult. Will there be any left? Since these flowers are generously given to us by Randall Orchard and Cliff Bilbrough we are keeping our fingers crossed. It is also at this time when supporters of the Flower Guild make donations, towards the flowers for the year and lilies for Easter in particular. Whilst those of us on the rota supply flowers each fortnight, there are special celebrations throughout the year when extra flowers are needed. Could anyone wishing to make a donation for lilies or towards flowers in general, give these to Kathleen Wilson or Judith Clarke. If the donation is in remembrance, please give a name when making the donation (preferably in writing) so that it can appear on the list, if that is what you would like. To ensure that a name is on the list of those to be specifically remembered, which is placed at the back of church on Easter Day, please make the donation by Sunday 1 April. We are all delighted to welcome anyone who would like to help with decoration of the church for Easter, whether you have experience or not. We shall be in church from 10am on Saturday 7 April 2010.

Church Electoral Roll Update

Each year the Church Electoral Roll is published at the Parish Annual Meeting in April. Rather than change lots of detail following that meeting, it is better to update your details in advance. Please let me know of any change of name – address – telephone – email before the 10th April, so this can be done. If you did not complete a form last year and wish to be included, forms are in in the black box on the long table near the kitchen. Telephone numbers and email addresses are not published – these are for the benefit of our clergy and officials. You may email your changes direct to me on susan.wallis@talktalk.net, ring me on 01748 518575, or leave a note in the black box. Thank you. 16 Susan Wallis

The Right Reverend Nick Baines‌‌. ... has been nominated as Bishop of Leeds, overseeing the new Diocese of West Yorkshire and the Dales. The diocese replaces the dioceses of Bradford, Ripon and Leeds, and Wakefield on Easter Sunday. The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, said he was "delighted" with the nomination of the 56-year-old. Bishop Baines has been the Bishop of Bradford for three years and was previously the Bishop of Croydon. He attended the University of Bradford and before ordination in 1987, he worked for four years as a linguist specialist at GCHQ. Bishop Baines said he was "fully aware of the challenges this brings, but am confident that this new diocese will thrive". 'Well-grounded understanding' Bishop Baines is known for his media work and has appeared on the Chris Evans Show on BBC Radio 2 and on BBC Radio 4's Thought for the Day. He also writes a blog called Musings of a Restless Bishop and has thousands of followers on Twitter. Dr Sentamu said Bishop Baines "brings a well-grounded understanding of the area he will serve, together with the vision, energy, and experience in strategic change, which will equip him for his ministry". The new diocese, which comes into being on 20 April, covers five church areas Bradford, Huddersfield, Leeds, Ripon and Wakefield - and each will have its own Area Bishop. It will be home to three cathedrals - in Bradford, Ripon and Wakefield - and have almost 500 clergy, 656 churches and 256 Church of England schools. It will run from Barnsley in South Yorkshire through West and North Yorkshire to parts of County Durham, covering 2,425 square miles (6280 sq km) and serving a population of 2,614,00, according to the Church of England. STOREHOUSE Thank you to all who support the Storehouse Foodbank with donations left in the large box at the back of church. Over the past month approximately 15 bags of non-perishable foods have been left, the contents of which are greatly appreciated by those who receive food parcels. THANK YOU! Thank you also to Leonard and Susan and Stuart who take the contributions from church every week - a bulky job done most willingly. 17

Looking Through the Cross 2014 – the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Lent Book by Graham Tomlin, Bloomsbury Publishing, £9.99 Everything looks different in this world through the lens of the Cross. This book deals with reconciliation, humility, identity, power, suffering, life and atonement. These are familar themes for a Lent book but in Dr Tomlin's hands they are given exciting new meaning which will touch the hearts and minds of men and women in a turbulent modern world. Sackcloth and Ashes 2014 - The Bloomsbury Lent Book by Ann Widdecombe, Bloomsbury Publishing, £9.99 What is our modern concept of penance? Is it giving up chocolates for Lent or is it a lasting state of the awareness of sin? Is it punishment or greater closeness to God? Is it always a response to personal sin or can an individual do penance for others' sins, or for the world? Ann Widdecombe looks at voluntary penance and its relation to repentance, at prescribed but not enforced penance as part of the sacrament of Absolution and, as an ex-Prisons Minister, at the role of penance as enforced by the State. Penance in art, literature, history, and in the Bible are all examined. THE WEDNESDAY BIBLE STUDY GROUP MEET AT THE LUNN’S AT 2 HURGILL ROAD @ 7.30pm. From week commencing 10th March, this group will be following the Lent course—Build on the Rock - please call Scott on 826895 for further details. Everybody welcome.

THE THURSDAY BIBLE STUDY GROUP AT JENNIFER PATRICK’S AT 1 ROPER COURT @ 7.30om - This is another very friendly and relaxed group who again will be following the Lent course—Build on the Rock. Please call Jennifer on 850693 for more information.

CHRISTIAN ACTIVITIES IN RICHMOND I keep a mailing list for Christians Together in Richmond. This not only lets people know about CTIR meetings and activities, but also courses, Bible Society, men's Grub Club and others. Unfortunately, it is only really practical for those with email access. If you have email and would like to receive this kind of information, please email me at jgdickinson@doctors.org.uk Messages are sent as 'blind copies' to protect your email address from theft. There is no obligation to attend meetings; it's purely for your information. John Dickinson, Secretary, CTIR

HOLY COMMUNION

Lord God, we pray for all who are suffering the effects of the floods: for those whose have been injured, for those whose homes have been lost or damaged, and for those who live in fear. Be with them, we pray, that they would know the calm of your presence, through him who stilled the raging of the storm, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
